Newfoundland is one of the most spectacular islands in the world, and I've got the footage to prove it. Just be sure to bring a warm jacket.
Amanda and I embark on a doomed road trip to 'The Rock' to photograph seascapes, icebergs, and maritime culture. To call it 'mind-blowing' is an understatement, but it comes with challenges.
The adventure begins with an overnight ferry ride across the sea, and we luxuriate in our 2-star berth. Things go downhill when Amanda finds out we're in separate beds.
Our first day broke the camper twice, and if it hadn't been for the kindness of strangers, our trip would have finished before it started.
Despite the challenges, we head to Bottle Cove to capture some seascapes, but Mother Nature has other ideas. Even though the occasional polar bear lands on the Island, I'm more scared of the moose, and plenty roam the forest I'm hiking in.
We bump into a fan at the first gas station, and he wants a selfie but not with me. How rude!
I also share the best way to find lost images among your many terabytes of landscape photography storage.
Will Amanda give me some personal space, and dare I show you my crappy test shots from my phone? What do I do when the stairs fall off the back of the camper, and what's my face like?
There's really only one way to find out.

A Canadian soldier challenged me to visit his homeland, Newfoundland. I took him up on it. Walked into his parent's house, where in the kitchen sat his old man, and his mom, and that young officer. His father was in WW2. Artillery man. Showed me all his medals. Two brown bottles sat on the table and when I sat down his father uncorked both bottles of rum. Home brewed rum mind you, and we had to cut it with water 50/50 (on advice of the son). I don't remember most of the rest of the trip but I came away with a deep respect for the land, and the people of Newfoundland. Fell in love with the place. My liver, not so much.
As a multi generational Newfoundlander, this is very accurate.
My Bro in Law used to make his own Saki....rice liquor...JMJ, that stuff would cut the legs off ya! haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
@@lucyhodge-corrigan9331 Your bro in law is my spirit animal-pun intended
"I don’t why it’s not another country."
We know why, but the heart breaks in the telling of that story.
Another great video Gavin. I’m the fan you and Amanda met at the Irving gas station in Corner Brook. My wife and I had a good laugh at the skit. We hope you had a good time in Newfoundland and come back again.
Thanks for being a good sport Keith ;)
That was a great moment in this video! Always interesting to see who else enjoys these on you tube. Looks like one hang of a place for some adventure.
I lived in Newfoundland (a Brit) for nine years, 2003-2012, and loved every minute of it. It is one of the most unspoilt and naturally beautiful places I have ever been. The people are the friendliest I have ever met, and are so caring and helpful to ‘come-from-always’ .
Glad you got to visit and photograph Newfoundland, Gavin. What a place. 👍
Agreed
So many youtubers out there let their success go to their heads and get a bit snobish. The fact that you two can run into fans and put them on camera for some fun speaks volumes of how good of people you are. Looking forward to the rest of this adventure.
I love when tourists visit our province and showcase the beauty. Sometimes it takes videos like this to reminds us what’s all around us. Thanks
Imagine being in a relationship where you both enjoy travel and photography. Must be mint
Fantastic first video! It was a blast hanging out with you, Amanda and the group! Looking forward to seeing more!
Fun times.
A+ for your pronunciation of Newfoundland!
I just came across your video, and I'm in awe of the things you were able to capture. It's not just because I've been living here most my life, it's just some days I forget for a moment, how fortunate I am to live on such a beautiful island on earth. Thank you both for your kindness, and stunning imagery. You are forever welcome here, I hope the rock is kind to you both, cheers! 🍻❤
Yes we do have bears in Newfoundland. Mostly brown bears. Even the moose is not native to the island. It was brought in years ago. Yes, we do get polar bears at the odd time. Don't plan your trip on seeing one. They are rare sightings. If you wanted to see larger mountains Gros Morne was the place to go just North of Deer Lake heading up the Northern Peninsula. Less than an hours drive North. Just a bit more than half an hour before Corner Brook heading west.
wow. This is the first time I heard an away person pronounce Newfoundland the way we do! Cheers.
Yep, we know who the star of the show is. 😋
@PhotoTrekr Looking forward to seeing her in action behind the Hasselblad!
Amanda is a gem. ❤ But you already know that. 😉
Just brilliant as always. Looking forward to the next episode. Amanda is so funny, she really is the star of the show.
Wow just a few min in ❤🎉❤😂 & loving it, wonderful comments too!
Gorgeous cinematography
📸 & humour 😉
I dated a Newfie for 2.5yrs (met in Toronto, I'm from an ISland 🏝️ too, albeit a tropical one!) 20+yrs ago, he was like a California Surfer dude with a heart of gold, from a small town 5h from St.John's
We visited his hometown in 2002 for a week (jumped into the cccold Atlantic Ocean in July, spontaneoulsy jigged cod (surprise for me!)
& I got also got surprise screeched IN, on a nearby ISland (kissed the cod) then danced the Newfie Jig with practically every fella in town!
LOL 6h of fun at the town dance that evening, what a blast ~ the nicest ppl & the landscapes of the ROCK are indeed Majestic!
"Dem nippers are sum big" 😅😊😉 (those mosquitos are big)
I've been waiting for you to visit my home province! I'm currently living in Australia and I miss 'home' so much...fog, potholes, wind and all! I am a hobbyist photographer and really enjoy your videos, and love your humor, and Amanda's as well. Keep up the fantastic work.
There is the Newfoundland black bear. 😊
Newfoundland will test you in a number of ways dude...your poor stairs! Definitely keep your eyes out for Moose while driving, it's wild over there. It's an amazing place! Looking forward to the videos to come! 😎📷
Thank you for coming to Newfoundland ❤️
Thanks Amanda
Ok. And and Gavin too!. 😆
I was in Newfoundland for the first time in April as I headed out there to try to get some shots of the total eclipse (got some...barely) as it looked like Newfoundland had the lowest angle on the eclipse before it headed off into the ocean. It didn't really strike me until I got there how much potential there is for landscape photographers. I probably picked one of the worst months to shoot as everything was brown and it was too early for icebergs, but I will definitely be back. I think it's an amazing spot for workshops and I hope you will do more there in the future. I shot a small fraction of what was there, and even someone like Gord Follet...who LIVES THERE...would tell you that there is so much more left to explore. Can't wait to go back, possibly in the Fall or in the early Summer to get some icebergs and puffins! What an amazing island!
Best time to come is early to mid July for east portion of province, and the fall for west coast of province!!
@@emford7932 Thank you! I might need to aim for July next year!
Great Trip and wonderful drone footage Gavin!
My home Province. Loved your video :)
Great video! 😮 Thank you for the weekly Sunday evening "awes" and laughs 👍
I love like you guys are always having fun!
Dang! We missed you and Amanda! Been watching past adventures to get my Fototripper fix. Always anxious for your new videos!
Outstanding drone footage at opening of video. Safe travels !!!
Awesome episode - can't wait for the next one. Nice to see you two back on the road again.
Great first episode! Looking forward to seeing the Newfoundland series! Wish we would have run into you and Amanda.
Very funny, Amanda is a star. I'm happy to see you starting a new set of video's in Newfoundland.
Awesome! Can’t wait for more 👍
Thank you Gavin and Amanda, another great video
That opening drone footage was fantastic!
Glad you had a great trip to the Rock :)). Thanks for sharing your journey 🙌
Brilliant video as always have been watching you for a long time now and your videos get better.
Of course Amanda is the star of the show 😂😂
Thanks for sharing your adventure to Newfoundland Gavin, the relationship you both share is amazing you are so close, Amanda made that very clear in the cabin, ha ha ,Exire looks really good, thanks, you really struggled with the conditions, trying to get the images that you wanted, I think it is important to show the failures also ,looking forward to the next one mate, without any disasters hopefully.
Wow what an amazing trip. Photography takes you to so many amazing places so that's why I'm so pleased I am one!
Gavin and Amanda (or is it Amanda and Gavin?). Another wonderful video. Thank both of you for your sense of humor and the wonderful photo tips. I also road trip with a camper and it’s always an adventure. Can hardly wait for the next video.
Thanks, Gavin for another entertaining video. Also, the Excire software is amazing, And so is their customer service support.
Wonderful video! Hopeful those are your only camper breakdowns this trip. 🤞 Looking forward to the rest of the series.
Terrific! Looking forward to more bergs. Had no idea the trip from Nova Scotia to Newfoundland would be so long. So unfortunate about the loose bits, luckily you're handy with tools. Nice drone work. Congratulations on the sponsor! More please.
Excellent video Gavin and Amanda.
Thank you, Gavin and Amanda, for making me laugh, properly, pretty much every video. When you're a semi-old fart there's not much that gets you chuckling anymore. You guys are the best, been following you for years and years and years. Also, the photography, locations and compositional studies is just lovely and always inspirational or gets one reflectiing on one's own stuff! Whatever you guys do, don't stop!
You are most welcome.
Absolutely wonderful video! Love a good road trip 😀 Newfoundland looks like a very interesting and beautiful place. I look forward to following along with the adventure! Cheers
Always look forward seeing you and Amanda on your photo adventures. Beautiful scenery and great photos… most of the time. (This time was the exception! Still enjoyable though!)
I love your road trip photography videos. The drone footage was excellent!!
Thanks for reviewing the Excire program. I just installed it and it is awesome.
Thank you !!
Your awesome.
I'm from Greenland, you're so welcome here 🙂
Absolutely stunning location. Your drone footage was amazing. I’m looking forward to more of these views. Bummer about the camper stairs. Cheers Gavin 👌
Looking forward to the rest of this series! Hope your van makes it back in one piece :)
Love watching your adventures
great video! love your photography style and your video content is 2nd to none. cheers!
Stunning Gavin, just stunning !!! Not your hair... the photography.
Brilliant video as always have been watching you for a long time now and your videos get better.
Of course Amanda is the star of the show 😂😂
See you next time, looking forward to receiving my book..😊
Looking forward to future videos on Newfoundland. We are going back soon after 2 years to spend time on the rock in the Gros Mourne area. It is a unique part of Canada. Kiss the cod !
Perhaps it should be renamed to NewFUNland. Looks like an amazing trip if this first epi is anything to go on 😍😍
The correct pronunciation is ''Noo-Fun-Laynd". We've been told.
My favorite photography channel. Great video. You and Amanda make an awesome comedy team. LMAO
Amanda really carries this channel , tbh
Those are some of the best video shots I've ever seen of an iceberg at 0:14 and 0:37! 😍 I'm talking better than NatGeo and BBC earth series. Great music choices too.
Another good and informative video, looking forward to the next one…
Wow.
Looking good Gavin! I've always wanted to see what the Princess Auto stores looked like in Nfld. Lol. Keep up the good work and keep the adventures coming! Cheers.
Landscapes, laughs, and magic software. You've outdone yourself.
Chance cove road is brutal. I live 10 mins away and dread it !
I struggle with composition thanks for this funny story! More composition videos!
Spent 3 weeks tent camping in Newfoundland exploring both east and west coasts. I found the most common sign along the roads read: CAUTION POTHOLES AHEAD. This sign is soooooo true! Aside from that, Newfoundland has the most beautiful Landscapes anywhere.
Really enjoyed your video
I'll be close to St Johns on the coast for a couple of weeks in July. Looking forward to seeing your entire series of your trip.
Brilliant video both of you, loved the cream on Amandas face and your look Gavin :)
Great episode. Too bad about your stairs though. Looking forward to more stuff from Newfoundland.
Been waiting like for ever it seems!!!
3 weeks
@@fototripper well it felt like forever! lol 😂 Your content is totally worth waiting for….
I don't know how moose droppings differ from deer or elk or caribou, but another sign to look for is bark stripped off a tree as though it's been sheered off, anywhere from 6-9 feet up.
Awesome looking place especially with the fog looks very cinematic and spooky just like out of a film. Almost a bit like Filey. I wish I had got a caravan there.😊
It’s hard for landscape photography to compete with drone footage. This video is all the proof you need.
drone footage is landscape photography
I must admit I stumbled on your video and couldn't stop laughing at your humor and quick whips, Really hope you enjoy your visit, Laughing to myself as I turned down a few trips I could have done to newfi land but really enjoyed your video . I will be subscribing to watch more ❤❤❤❤ wess from manitoba Canada. 😊😊😅
Great video, Gavin. I recognize the 'find the composition' process!
This one was a bit more daring ;)
@@fototripper I will have to agree with that one. :)
😁 just smile and wave 😀👋
Great video , the ladder , too funny , it couldn’t be fixed ? The stainless steel alone is worth it. Amanda’s keeps us laughing as usual, I knew when you shut the lights out , the next time you turned on I know Amanda would be beside you. 😂😂 is that bad ? Looking forward to this trip of yours enjoy guys.
They could have been salvaged but it would just keep happening. Good riddance.
Top vid bud! ❤ 🎉
Visited Newfoundland many times...great place and good people! That software didn't find any lettuce with the iceberg prompt however....
Gavin, you and Amanda should come visit South Africa. Good chance you will be blown away by the landscapes over here, and also an opportunity to meet you. Great video.
Agreed. I love the shots Alex Nail got from Drakensberg.
Newfoundland has some of the biggest Black Bears in North America.
I have been drinking that Wheat Juice stuff for a while, its quite good, after a while you tend to forget details, such as 'why' and 'where' you are going.
This is like the better remake of titanic! Photograph me like your French girls Gavin. 😆😆 Great video G man .
I love a boat with a rusty portcullis I do.
I thought that type of shit that happened to your stairs and camper tie only happens on Italian roads, however, when you found a helpful place that was able to fix it, well that sealed it that you were not in Italy!
The roads sound like the ones in the UK at the moment! I used to flit back and forth to Canada for work and sometimes the plane would land at Newfoundland to pick up and deliver mail, the landing was pretty hairy slam the plane down sharply then hang on whilst the pilot navigated the craters on the runway! Great video looking forward to seeing more!
Sounds about right.
GAVIN… I have taken that ferry ( I transport shows ) and we went to St. Johns…. The dinner I had was trezmendus! I got to see a Blue Whale breach outside the ferry about a mile away… it was massive.
Hi, we due à Newfoundland Roadtrip right now from the 1of june to 15 of july...hope to due some good Fotos like you do ....we are a big fans of you and Amanda ....well and of Thomas of corse...😂take care
Nice video 👍
Great vlog and very amusing. Love the berry and barley juice references. At 3:17 you almost look like Ernie McCracken from King Pin. Sorry just hope you know who I mean?😂
Dude. Multiple comments
I love riding the bc ferries. That one u did looks awesome. I want to do that
Moose- i live in the mountains around slc. I have moose looking in my windows all the time and hike past them all the time. They of course can be dangerous but generally not being stupid around them and ur fine.
Ur videos are great. And i love the increased craggly edge scampering. Adds to the drama.
New to your channel. Great video
Been looking forward to this series from Nefoundland. Spent 3 months there last summer and fell in love with the place. Can't wait to see you work your magic with your photography!
I'm thinking of Gary Hough's latest video on taking risks while I watch you.
That piece of software to find lost images is a must have. Where have they been the past 50 years?
I know I know
Hope that you got to see more icebergs than I did last week. I did manage to see the one in Brighton but guess that I should have gone to St. Anthony to see more. Makes me laugh that they put signs by the side of the road warning of potholes. Yes there are a lot. Having said that, it surprises me that there are so few tourists there as the scenery, especially the rugged coastline is amazing. Plenty of sea stacks for you!! When I was about to take some photos in Brighton , a village of about 200 people, somebody called out my name. I ignored it thinking that nobody would know me there. Turned out to be somebody I know from where I live in North Bay, Ontario which is 1800 kms away!
They really only need one tow signs for the potholes, once as you get off the ferry and one where you pick up the car rental.
"Room" ??? "Portcullis" ??? Good god ! Visited Botwood and Dalhousie back in the last century; nice places. Hope your van holds up till the end of the trip .Bought Excite Photo 2024. Looks good. Thanks for the code.
Hope you enjoy it.
Thanks Gavin. Its grinding through my 9 gigs of photos as I type :-)
