A tad understated....perhaps " Century " ..Ive heard the Vatican have now decided to change the phrase " Patience of a saint" to that of " Patience of Mads " ...Not one of those holy saints could show as much dedication and meticulous endeavour towards any unnecessary, necessary Sanding jobs.
Mads, You need to run the camera cables again. In the middle of the strings is not correct, look at the footage and see your mast is a mirror, and you have a passage identical to the one you tried the first time on the opposite side, use it to pass other cables, including the camera.
"Fear is a strong motivator. So I'm gonna leave the guts of the failed attempt up here, painly visible. So that the line can see what'd happen to it if it doesn't comply." 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I love the your dry sense of humour, has me laughing out loud often and my family looking oddly at me. My favorite is using fear as a motivator for the lines.
Making those ends in the lines is a great investment. Never let anyone do it for you. They may choose to hide a mistake and you find out when it fails and all your sails, or even mast come crashing down.
Have been following for a few years and I am very impressed with all you have done. You are a true inspiration and when refitting our boat we now have got to a stage when we ask our selves - ”is it spiffy enough?” However, the point of this post is to warn you, before you fit the lights in your cabin, that some impact on radio broadcasting and receiving. We learnt this the hard way. Some LED lights- in our case- Foresti and Suardi reduced our radio reception from 17 miles to 1mile. Furneaux Riddle has done some research, and the US Coast guard put out a warning 2018/19. I wrote a short article about our experience, which I will try to link.
I cant wait to hear how you like the Garmin set up, I checked in to it and it seems reasonably priced!!! Im putting off the electronics upgrade on my boat until the last minute as it turns over so fast... we are learning through your efforts and I appreciate your awesome attention to detail!!!
At some point you may want to consider a rigid boom vang and chuck that topping lift. Garhaur makes affordable ones that work perfectly. I switched to rigid vangs on my last two boats and would never consider a lift again. Rigid vangs are superior for sail trim and do a superb job supporting the boom.
exciting stuff almost splash day ...well done sir ..well done .. i know she's not 100% yet but everything you have done all this time so far she's better than new everywhere you touched ..so... keep on truckinn brother !!! ...
Hi Mads. Your mast has two cable guides one each side? We wondered why you did not use the empty one on the other side of the mast rather than risk chafing from the halyards in the halyard compartment? Also, why you have opted for the fixed topping lift? A good update is to replace the the full length of the topping lift using one of the top sheaves like a second main halyard back to the mast base or even the cockpit? If you have, or intend to fit a gas strut, power kicker type arrangement. Or the boat already has the Selden kicker, The topping lift becomes almost superfluous and even in the way sometimes. However, having a second halyard aft of the mast is incredibly useful. Lifting kit aboard, tenders, engines, people up the mast etc. Even as a second main halyard should you have one fail (and they do). Obviously, its your boat, do what you like! 😀 Just thought we may add some thoughts, or useful comment. Sail Safe mate. Ant, Cid & the pooch crew.
Yes, I was thinking the same - one channel full of cables, the other empty...! Perhaps Mads didn't like the thought of the cable coming out of the other side of the mast.
Great job splicing. I have tried many times and failed. My wife is the expert, with both the patience and ability to read directions and measure accurately. BZ to you for sticking with and especially showing the rest of the line what happens to those who don’t obey.
I liked the way he threaten the line into submission. I worked with a fellow who bumped his head several times on a I beam finally he said as he shook a pipe wrench at the I beam " one more time " It worked....never bumped his head again.
Nice video Mads! Since you still have a couple of days, might suggest bolting a couple of Petzl's Coeur stainless 316L or HCR 904L (25kN) anchors to the top plate or just below on the mast itself at a spot where they are not in the way but can be easy reached . This because you want to climb the mast. Alone, hoisted etc. Depending on the harness/bosun chair/system used, your tie in point determines how high your body really can be in relation to the mast, and thus how easy it is to work equipment on top of the mast. The anchors may be used to clip in a 4 step etrier (petzl Looping) or footloop made from some rope, to give you an easy step more. hight An anchor can be used to clip in a pully to hoist or lower stuff like tools from and to the deck when alone and when hoisted up. You can clip in the tool bucket, so you don't have to carry it. as an xtra safety point or to attach a rapid descent line , if you forgot something and have to climb back up or even if fastened well, use the power of the sails and still be able to be pulled of a sandbank at the Rio Dulce with lines to the mast. Every good climbing or rope-acces shop can supply you these anchors. Good luck with the last tasks Mads!!!
Never disappointed in any of your videos. So excited for you and for the splash. Take care if that pitch nerve and pace yourself. Cheers from MEXICO (ya, I moved lol)
Wow...NEXT WEEK!??!?! I'm both happy and sad. Happy that you're getting her into the water, sad that some awesome projects and information are coming to an end. Can't wait to see the interior work progress now!! As for Audible? Can't do it. I've tried. It seems that no matter what I totally miss out on the story because I need to focus on other things. :(
You made a lot of wire fir yourself with that topping lift - replacing the clevis pin location with a block and running it down the mast and back to the cockpit allows more flexibility and is a useful extra mast head line
So excited to (hopefully) see her go in the water! Conveniently I have the week off so if you do go live for it (and please do!) I won’t have pesky work distracting me
to assist you in pulling wire through conduit pick up a tube or bottle of Wire Lubricant at the hardware store. Electrictians use it to make wire pulling easier and not damage the insulation on the wire. works great.
I'm going to start working on my own boat this month, and I was considering putting a camera on the mast too. I'm eager to know how it works. I'm interested in both seeing the sea-floor when anchoring without as much reflection and refraction, and checking the surroundings at night during a passage. For this last part, I was more inclined in high sensitivity cameras than IR cameras. Consider applying an aquafobic coating to the camera, and a hose nozzle or pump powerful enough that allows you to clean it from the deck.
We did a lot lighter sanding job on the copper coat and it was fine. The camera will be superb, you'll wonder how you managed before. Threading cables/ropes - silicone spray and lots of it, it's amazing what a difference it makes. We used on sail catcher beads running in channels in the boom, it went from impossible to manageable. Great video...
You are just A M A Z I N G ! ! ! Can't describe enough how much I admire you, your skills, your dedication, your commitment to your dreams !!! Excellent !!! Fricking excited to see next week the reborn/sexy/glorious/hi-tech Athena back on the water!
Fantastic Mads, you've done a great job! Splash date is an enormous milestone! As a fellow Warrior owner I've been following your journey every step of the way. Best of luck!
Speaking of top-of-mast. Have a look at the Echomax Active-XS (No affiliation). Some may think it redundant in the age of AIS, but AIS isn't necessarily as widespread as radar still. I like a belt+bracers (suspenders) approach when it comes to making sure I'm visible anyway.
Yes! Finally another SailLife update! 2 weeks was too long bro! But creds for letting us know you had to skip your usual weekly schedule! Looking forward to see the splash soon!
Mads it was 2 hard weeks to go through without your uplifting and inspirational week...end ending broadcast, the highpoint of the week. Good to see you weren't idle as if you have ever been that. Great video as ever.
Thank you for these wonderful inspirational videos. Dream, design and build: your videos are exemplars for everyone who strives, problem solves and triumphs in dragging their dream to existence. We are all looking forward to Splash Day and finally seeing her back in her element. We are cheering you on.
Whew! Barley made it through the last two weeks without a Mads video. This one arrived just in time. I almost had to start watching cat videos. Fantastic work Mads. Athena is quickly becoming a first class yacht for a first class couple. Take care and my best to Ava and Jurkil.
Some multi color (red and green) light bulbs/ ledspots to keep a good night vision would be cool, also along the decks it's standard in many new boats. philips and osram
Aye m8, I’m impressed you listened to the idea of mounting a forward aiming cam in the mast head. Looking forward to hear your opinion about how it works for your needs.
MiQ Bohlin I honestly don’t understand why blue water sailors doesn’t have this. My guess is that after this episode from Sail Life, all (or most sailing channels) will copy/paste this idea. But we will know who did it first😊

Step by step...soon we will pass "Splash Day" and no more Do-hickies or Oh glorious sanding ☹. But on the other hand, you will begin your life full of Love and Adventure 😊, and I wish you all the best of luck for the future. Thank you, cheers.
I believe the camera will be a part of the Garmin network and I'm not sure that Garmins interface provides a POE output, also in a wet environment its better to keep power and data on separate cables and inputs.
Not a bad eye splice. The taper is a bit abrupt, when you cut out the strands, they should all be different lengths. After about 50 more you should be a total pro. :-) Masthead camera is a great idea, can't wait to see it in your videos.
You probably knew this, but if not: Most vulcanising electric tapes do not tolarate UV. Hence they degrade in couple of years. However, if you use SILICONE vulcanising tape, it lasts much longer. It's more expensive yes but so much better! Both types sticks almost only to itself so either one is easy to remove, unlike the actual "tape" tapes that stick to everything and leave a gooey mess.
So you could just get cat 5 cable and just the garmin rj45. A waterproof rj45 connector at the bottom of the mast is handy to unplug the radar/camera cable so you don't have to cut it everytime the mast comes off
You should use some red led light'sin the cabin to illuminate the space for running at night and,, shift changes. White light's at night mess with night vision!
I know you don't live where I do... but we got our first snow today !.. You can insert the Games of Thrones quote if you want.. Regardless, it sound like you are ready to splash, looking forward to your next videos as always, and it's a big milestone on your journey so Congratulations in advance !!
I wish you could talk about your research on what you chose for parts. Like what about the synthetic rigging? What other choices would you have about your connectivity in your boat e.g. zigbee? I am late for your channel, but boy this is fascinating.
"Somewhat extensive refit" Understatement of the decade.
It is truly incredible how much you've accomplished with Athena. So excited for splash day.
Thank you so much :) Still a lot of work to do but I'm getting closer :)
@@SailLife I recall when you started on the deck replacement. The rest of this is a walk in the park :)
Mads, You need to run the camera cables again.
In the middle of the strings is not correct, look at the footage and see your mast is a mirror, and you have a passage identical to the one you tried the first time on the opposite side, use it to pass other cables, including the camera.
came here to say the same thing
The paint job really looked stunning at the beginning.
It really does - the boat looks incredible.
Please add a boot stripe & shear band before you hit the water....it just makes the boat look so much better.
Wasn’t there a conduit on the opposite side from the one you tried to use in the first place?
Mads you really are cracking through these jobs lately, I hope the weather holds for you and the transport company and crane play ball.😀👍⛵️
that huge fixed prop actually scares me, with the amount of drag that thing will generate
Splash Day an exciting milestone. Really enjoy your show!
Making those ends in the lines is a great investment. Never let anyone do it for you. They may choose to hide a mistake and you find out when it fails and all your sails, or even mast come crashing down.
Very pleased to see you back 👍 Next week fella is splashdown- if not the week after- no rush mate. 👍👍

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE go live for the splash on Wednesday I’ve been watching since the beginning and it would be brilliant to watch as it happens.
Another great video as usual, thank you Mads; and thank you for providing 20 minutes respite from the mad house of America.
I cant wait to hear how you like the Garmin set up, I checked in to it and it seems reasonably priced!!!
Im putting off the electronics upgrade on my boat until the last minute as it turns over so fast... we are learning through your efforts and I appreciate your awesome attention to detail!!!

Hi Rooting for you Mads ,getting near splash time ,we shall be watching , thanks for your ride along with Athena ,stay safe.
Dyneema is waaaaay easier to splice. Maybe consider it for any rigging needs. It would be way strong for a topping lift but figured I’d mention it.
Just make sure you use single braided. There are some good videos on it.
exciting stuff almost splash day ...well done sir ..well done .. i know she's not 100% yet but everything you have done all this time so far she's better than new everywhere you touched ..so... keep on truckinn brother !!! ...
Better to have a halyard for a topping lift. That way you get a spare halyard.
You were missed!!
Hi Mads. Your mast has two cable guides one each side? We wondered why you did not use the empty one on the other side of the mast rather than risk chafing from the halyards in the halyard compartment? Also, why you have opted for the fixed topping lift? Hello from Ontario,
Things are looking awesome!
I’m sure others are as excited for splash day as you are!
Can’t wait to watch next week!

You have the fastest twenty minutes on the internet.
I watch at 1.25 speed so even shorter for me ...
good job Mads, good luck with the splash!!
0:33 Wow, that paint job, so darn spiffy!
No more taking a Sunday off, I missed seeing your video
Is it even a Warrior38 anymore? More like a Mads38 to me!
If Mads replaces every part of a Warrior 38, one piece at a time, is it the same Warrior 38, or a completely new boat?
How about a MadsWarrior38+
Excited to hear your review on the lights. I've ben trying to decide on which ones to get for my boat.
Amazing progress Mads, you've come so far and are so close to being back in the water, I'll bet you're excited. Good luck and keep up the good work!
Wow...NEXT WEEK!??!?! I'm both happy and sad. Happy that you're getting her into the water, sad that some awesome projects and information are coming to an end. Can't wait to see the interior work progress now!!

Good call on the copper activation part. You’ll need that second part of sanding later on to kill the cravings 😁
You made a lot of wire fir yourself with that topping lift - replacing the clevis pin location with a block and running it down the mast and back to the cockpit allows more flexibility and is a useful extra mast head line
Great job on the eyesplice. I started splicing a couple of years ago and all it takes is a bit of patience. Oh, the camera looks nice as well.
Hi Mads I’ve run a lot of fibre optic cable, we used a lot of talcum powder to lubricate the run.
So excited to (hopefully) see her go in the water! Conveniently I have the week off so if you do go live for it (and please do!) I won’t have pesky work distracting me
I’m sooo exited for splashing day
Love the mast camera idea, I've alway thought what an advantage that might be, docking, navigating hidden rocks in shallows or lobster pots at night.
More glorious sanding.
Great episode. Love your channel. fingers crossed for next week.

Best of luck with the launch!
very nice hull finish
This makes me feel a bit better about my own battles splicing line. Thank you :)
You could do with a wireless bore scope. Comes in mighty handy.
Clean the hull frequently when in the water and it will last a heck of a lot longer, and you can have an enjoyable diving experience :)
Hi! The rubber tape you have used for the cables is not UV resistant. I have the same on my boat and it needs to be protected with electrical tape.
You should (only) use self-amalgamating tape for these kind of applications.
Very well thought out. Another great video. GOD speed. JC
The Idea of threatening the line with the previous failure is hysterical.
This has to be exciting and feel really good after all the hours put into this project. Looking forward to see Athena splash, fingers are crossed.
Ahhh the "somewhat extensive" pain of getting into splicing spectra! Don't worry i think a 30% failure rate on eye splices is pretty damn good!
You are just A M A Z I N G ! ! ! Can't describe enough how much I admire you, your skills, your dedication, your commitment to your dreams !!! Excellent !!!
Fricking excited to see next week the reborn/sexy/glorious/hi-tech Athena back on the water!
Way to go Mads. You’re so close! Glad you’re back and good luck this week splashing Athena. Looking forward to seeing it.
Fantastic Mads, you've done a great job! Splash date is an enormous milestone! As a fellow Warrior owner I've been following your journey every step of the way. Best of luck!
Hey Mads
Looking very much forward to the splash! Will you set up a live camera so we can have an online splash party?
Good to see you again cheers 🥃👍
The some what extensive refit is seeing a light at the end of the tunnel (mast). Well done for taking on such a mammoth task and winning.
To pull the cables use one of the new braided fishing lines ,they are small diameter and you can get them up to 150 lb. Breaking point
Looking forward to the big splash !!
You are amazing! I can’t believe it’s been four years. Looking forward to seeing you and Ava sail away! Great job!
Looking mighty spiffy, Mads
Don’t forget a bottle of champagne Mads. You have earned it big time. Splashing Athena, what an achievement, really. Amazing!
I think he plans on stepping the mast right after launching....he needs a coin for that as well.
Thank you for these wonderful inspirational videos. Dream, design and build: your videos are exemplars for everyone who strives, problem solves and triumphs in dragging their dream to existence. We are all looking forward to Splash Day and finally seeing her back in her element. We are cheering you on.
Cheers from California ... Athena's gone thru a lot of changes it's been a cool journey watching your project . Well done CAPTAIN !
Whew! Barley made it through the last two weeks without a Mads video. This one arrived just in time. I almost had to start watching cat videos. Fantastic work Mads. Athena is quickly becoming a first class yacht for a first class couple. Take care and my best to Ava and Jurkil.
You might want to consider installing a shade on the camera so rain doesn't leave water spots on the lens and will give you a clear view when raining.
I was thinking the same...maybe a half circle cap above to make a nice drip edge.
Some multi color (red and green) light bulbs/ ledspots to keep a good night vision would be cool, also along the decks it's standard in many new boats. philips and osram
How crazy would it be to have the splash day on live stream!!!
Very happy for you Mads, keep it up 👍
I find the sound of lines whacking against the mast to be soothing. Also , don't get matching cutlery.
Aye m8, I’m impressed you listened to the idea of mounting a forward aiming cam in the mast head. Looking forward to hear your opinion about how it works for your needs.
MiQ Bohlin
I honestly don’t understand why blue water sailors doesn’t have this.
My guess is that after this episode from Sail Life, all (or most sailing channels) will copy/paste this idea. But we will know who did it first😊
Yes there are a few mast cam’s out there, but I reckon they will be more popular in future. Must be excellent when single handed manoeuvre into a atoll etc.
Can't wait to see your splash video. Love your editing/transitions it's something I aspire to be able to do.
Great progress. Holding thumbs for the splash to happen as planned. 👏🤞
Step by step...soon we will pass "Splash Day" and no more Do-hickies or Oh glorious sanding ☹. But on the other hand, you will begin your life full of Love and Adventure 😊, and I wish you all the best of luck for the future. Thank you, cheers.
Couldn’t you use POE and only run one wire?
thats what i was thinking, but not sure the camera supports it...the manual is terrible.
So you could just get cat 5 cable and just the garmin rj45.
A waterproof rj45 connector at the bottom of the mast is handy to unplug the radar/camera cable so you don't have to cut it everytime the mast comes off
That boat looks fantastic, was trying to learn about glass and got myself hooked, great job
Fingers crossed for next week! Great to have my favourite Sunday fix back!
Congrats Mads! The moment we have all been cheering you on for
You are an inspiration to many, and teacher to all DIY folks.
You should use some red led light'sin the cabin to illuminate the space for running at night and,, shift changes. White light's at night mess with night vision!
I've watched every episode of Athena Mads! Amazing the great day is nearly here! She looks as pretty as a copper bottomed swan!
Great to have you back. Can't wait for the splash. Hope we get to see it. You've done an amazing job with Athena.
Incredible progress Mads, can't wait for the next installment! Don't forget to check your seacocks.
I know you don't live where I do... but we got our first snow today !.. You can insert the Games of Thrones quote if you want.. Regardless, it sound like you are ready to splash, looking forward to your next videos as always, and it's a big milestone on your journey so Congratulations in advance !!
Been waiting two long weeks for this!!!
Thanks for staying tuned :D
I have not
Don't let it happen again, Mads!! :)
Athena in the water........wow!
I wish you could talk about your research on what you chose for parts. Like what about the synthetic rigging? What other choices would you have about your connectivity in your boat e.g. zigbee? I am late for your channel, but boy this is fascinating.
