That was a somewhat short Farewell to one of the most famous sailboats in UA-camLand. All the best to the new Owner of Obelix.
Don't know how you do it. The amount of work you are able to accomplish, including producing a video for your UA-cam channel (filming, editing, documenting) AND working a full time job and living your personal life.
Wow 👏
Holy-Moly... Watching you set that battery cell down with the terminal ends facing a table full of stainless just made my heart skip a beat!
Drinking game in Australia every time we hear the words "pretty dang spiffy". Cheers!
Enough emotions and wallowing let’s get back to the tracks -> that was hilarious!
Can't tell you how much I enjoy my weekly Sail Life installment.
Mads, by the time I hear you say, "sea youuuuu" at the end of each video, my head is spinning with detail overload. I mean this in a good way...thanks for all the great content.
Letting go to move forward is such a strange phenomena in our lives. Good things Mads.
Hi from Australia.
You are my favourite refit/sailing channel of all time (you are also in my top 5 all time channels).
Thanks for you great videos. I love the way you explain things and the quality of your editing makes the videos a joy to watch.
Selling anything you used to live in for a time is hard, but to your future with Eva is well worth it! Good job! Aloha!
These videos make my Sundays!
Same. Its time to wind down and watch Sail life lol. Its one of the few things I actually specifically sit down to watch.
Enough wallowing in emotions for now.........I about died laughing, thanks Mads you made my day.
Mads, please do a full before and after video of your Athena build. I have watched every video you made and I honestly cant (without going back and looking) remember what she used to look like inside and out.
YES! I cant wait to see Athena finished!
⬆️ Mads is still wiring in the new flux capacitor. Soon, very soon!
Hi Mads. With regard to your genoa tracks. You may want to think about the sheeting point on the track (cars) when the foresale is furled or reefed. The optimum angle of the sheet to the sail is generally a bisection of the leach and the foot of the headsail. When the Genoa is full IE at 100% deployed this will be further back on the track. As you reduce the sail size this point will move forward. (Less if you are Yankee cut). Also, as the wind strength changes you will want to move the cars forward or back to curve or flatten foot of the sail and will be different from a beat to a reach. Being able to do this with a single line from the cockpit is an easy single line installation. As you only need to pull the cars forward not back; as the sheet will do this for you under tension. Not all of your sailing will be under full sail and it is important to maintain the right sail shape (or as much as possible) even when reefed. So if your setting this up now put in adjustable cars with a line to the cockpit and think about a padded luff to the headsail too. Being able to maintain good speed or penetration in strong winds is just as important in stronger winds as it is in light winds. As always it's your boat.... Just giving you some food for thought. Sail Safe Guys, Ant, Cid & the pooch crew.
Mads mentions a second car on the track to change the direction of the line, but wouldn't a foot block behind the winch be better?
@@jorgenr Facing the same issue on my boat, a second set of jib cars was (1) less expensive and (2) created no issues in mounting.
I had the same issue on my boat and I skipped the foot block and used a second car on the genoa track. That way the side deck remains clear.
@@jorgenr I agree. I am worried about the angle of the sheet on that second car. It would get a sideways load, which it may not be designed for. In addition, Antal makes very nice foot block that are cheaper than a similar-quality car.
Sure you can reef a Genoa in a emergency. But, they are not made for reefing i.e. stress points. And, usually made from a thinner sail cloth material (lite wind sail).
Best have a 'thicker material' sollent jib, or even a slutter jib.
Curved tracks are a thing of the past. Use a flat track for the jib. With a curve (downwards) track the sheet tension will change while moving the car sideways...
Instead of bending the track use some kind of support.
Anyone else having anxiety thinking about this project coming to an end? I can't believe its been 5 years.
right??? what else will we watch to distract us from our own projects!
I for one am looking forward to them switching to sailing videos once the build is complete. It will be a validation if the mods to Athena are successful
That's cute, the only way that boat projects come to an end is if you sell all your boats. There are ALWAYS things to fix and upgrade!
Nothing like using watching someone else's boat projects to put off doing your own!
DIY means "do it yourself"
Nice touch with the flowers Mats, my wife likes it!
Oh boy She's looking good. Seems like with your to-do list each vertical list can be done in 2 week increments with plenty of time to relax, and make her super spiffy..👍👍💚⛵⛵⛵
Congrats on the sale. Someone got a good boat. She looked,,, happy heading out. Now a new "chapter" begins. Your committed, but, dont panic. You got this Skipper.
I always look forward to Sundays and a dose of DIY boat encouragement from Mads.
I can't believe that your refit is coming to an end. It's sad but there comes a time in every boats life that the work needs to be finished up so she can experience the open seas like she was designed to do. It's so awesome you will have Ava to enjoy your journey with. Exploring is bun by your self but it is so much better with companion. I really liked watching your refit from beginning to end and learned a lot along the way.
I know it's crazy but if you still have that old Windlass when you come threw Florida, USA I would gladly drive or sail to where your are and buy it from you. Mine was damaged in a hurricane. I had the motor rebuilt but the gearbox has something wrong with it and sometimes locks up so I have to tap the shaft coming out of the gypsy with a hammer to get her moving again. Once she is moving that old windlass is strong. It's so old that I can't get parts for it anymore. I need to replace the Windlass...I would never get my 65lb Mantis Anchor with 200 foot of chain up if she goes out. It would also be awesome to have a piece of Athena on my boat. Like I said I know it would be crazy to do it intentionally but if by chance it would be cool...LOL
I know the feeling of seeing you home of so many year departing was hard. A boat becomes part of you even though you know you had to let her continue her adventure without you. Keep living the dream!
?!?! 821 DAYS ?!?! I had to rewatch that part... 121 days... phew... Though I was secretly excited for another 2 years of DIY aboard good ol Athena...
I also heard 821 days!!!!!
OMG 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Me too. Glad I wasn’t the only one.
I would have a sheet running back to the cockpit for the genoa track car - the changing angle on the luff and foot of the sail can have a dramatic affect on performance in light airs, it also gives you something to play with when you're on a long slow boring run! Building up from scratch I wouldn't compromise on anything - you'll kick yourself!
I fully agree
Awesome Mads, with the batteries heating arrangement.
1) Loop from hydronic.
2) Same or different loop, from fresh water side of engine (it's there, a shame to waste the opportunity).
3) Heating pad.
On putting the toe rail brackets on. I would have had one swim at least during that time.😁
Best wishes from Northern Canada.
Mads, I believe mounting the wood bulwarks on the inside of the mounting bracket would be a better solution, as far as safety goes. while healing over hard, a lot of pressure is put on the bulwark, while walking fore/aft, better to be relying on the bracket than the bolts...no? Just a thought. Well that was sad, seeing Obelix sailing away :-/
I think the new owner will enjoy Obelix, perhaps as much as you did. Things are progressing quickly now, hopefully the rest of the refit will go smoothly.
I have been watching your vids religiously since Obelix! I think 121 days is a pipe dream lol! Would love to see Ava and Jokul say hi again, can’t wait for you adventures :)
Mads, perhaps you should consider installing plates for sea anchor/drogue. Since you already are in the lasercutting businesses and now when you have access, on the inside of the boat.
Sorry and glad to see Obelix go, I'm sure the new owner is lucky that he bought it from you, however now you can concentrate on Athena 100%. Take care
Glad the Obelix sale went OK for you!
Consider putting a baffle (or 3) in the water tank to keep the water from sloshing around too much.
Best of luck getting as much as you can ready over the next 90 days, try not to stress too much.
New Found Metals makes port lights that will work for you.
Mads, thank you for all your educational videos you’ve done so far. I really appreciate having the Sunday evening with you. I like your positive attitude and the coolness you send out. You’re definitely a good source for information and a role model.
I would locate battery high up so last to get wet if flooding and hence bulge pump will keep working.
once the water is covering those cells then you are beyond worrying about a bilge pump. The best bilge pumps can't keep up with a failed through-hull - crew with a bucket can shift more than a pump
Loved the flowers in the cabin, although they were hidden behind some of the “interesting stuff” 👍
This is the best channel in UA-cam.
its definitely one of our favorites
How many years have I been watching you refit this boat? 5/6 years? I'm thinking Yukell was young dog.
Athena is coming along nicely. I lived on a Catalina 30’ for 17 years. That was enough. 😂
⬆️ a friend grew-up on an Angelman ketch. He sold it when he was 41. Very quiet man, yet like to be around people.
Mads attention to detail is well worth noting to anyone who's thinking about restoring a boat . There's lots of consideration involved Athena's going to be a great cruising boat !
As someone who lives in the UK, the temperature in the UK in the winter is very similar to the weather in Denmark in the winter
It's been a long time since the sea froze here though. Personally I think the heat pads are the best solution
It very much depend on where You live in the UK. Northern England/Southern Scotland is about the same, but Southern England is way warmer.
The tulips are very nice.
Don't forget to vent that shiny new tank, Mads! Keep up the good work!
Another great video, Don't give up on the idea of cockpit adjusted cars for he sheets. I have used both and would never go back to non cockpit style. Safer and dramatically easier to adjust under any point of sale. Clambering along the deck with a flogging sheet is a nightmare in any kind of blow. You will never ever regret adjustment lines.
instead of genoa tracks, consider floating jib cars. For cruising you might appreciate the ability to move the lead in and out more than fore and aft. Also, less holes in your deck.
nice to see you have some tulips to brighten up the place. Happy Eastern!
Anyone that thinks those stanchion bases look expensive should see the stunning price of new aluminium ones. Specifically constructed for galvanic fun with their stainless fitting bolts and stanchions.
Hej Mads, I would definitely consider 3D-sheeting for the genoa, eliminating the need for a genoa-track whilst being able to fully control your sail trim, better than with a traditional track.
Position each 3D-point a few dm ahead of where the sheet would touch deck. You will easily be able to add/reduce sail twist to enhance light wind and hard wind performance, as being able to sheet very close hauled or maintaining an efficient sail shape even when opening up the angles to a beam or broad reach. This is vital for comfortable and safe sailing and not just a performance thing.
As for the self tacking jib, the ideal track shape would be a radius with the center about halfway up the forestay. A track following the deck shape would not have an ideal shape.
Smashing episode!!!
Love the tulips
Great work ,MADS ,OBELIX has moved on so one less distraction , the 90 day dead line is flying by and I do not think the Tulips will last that long . ATHENA is going to be a feat of your ideas and perfection . Thanks for the video and stay safe .
ready to see the adventure begin.....
Obelix new owners are very fortunate to have bought her and have you to ask any questions about her.
I would love to have the previous owner of our Fuji around to ask a few questions
Now my sunday can start, I have finished watch and the day can start. Love the channel
Sunday is my favourite day!
something to look forward to on a Sunday. Fantastic how he keeps motivated.
Love the progress and the fact you take the time to share it with us! My 2 favorite boat projects, Sail Life and Samson Boat Co, both making great progress.
Did you just glass that seam where the top deck meets the hull? I must have missed that somewhere.
Really enjoy Sampson a true craftsman, an extraordinary knowledgeable young man.
Glad Påsk Mads
Well done on selling Obelix - I'm both happy and sad along with you ⛵⛵⛵
Poor Jökull, he'll be confused for awhile.
Amazing amount of planning design and work you have done and continue to do. Thank you for sharing.
Did you mention a vent on the new water tank? And you should seriously consider a RUBRAIL on the hull exterior. Seriously. Rubrail. You want to preserve your paint job and fenders can only go so far. Rubrail!!! It will also provide a linear break on the hull, and will make the hull (in profile) appear sleeker.
Sunday fun day!
What a week!! Huh? Wow can not wait till next week. I'm very excited✌🏻💗😊❣️
O my, this will be a really great boat!!
Mads, warning re s.s. water tanks. If the welds are not gas shielded on both sides then one side (the inside of the tank) is no longer stainless and will rust. To do this the whole tank has to be filled with gas witch is expensive and is not always properly done. I know this from bitter experience not just on my own boat but on many others. Make shure that your stainless guy does a professional job. I paid a fortune for mine but still had this problem.
I'm getting excited for the day you two set sail. I like your Easter flowers.
Look forward to you coming back to the UK.
Superb progress as usual.👍😀⛵️
One thing about the UK, you get the weather you don’t want ;-)
Two thumbs up Mads!
Coming home after working on my boat engine for 12hrs, it's really nice to watch you working Mads!
congrates on the quick sale
Great video, Thanks
Nice video Mads! We are learning so much from your videos! We are refitting an old sailboat our selfs, can't wait to go sail with her ❤️
Well done, it’s coming along nicely 👏🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Congratulations on your demotion!
Happy to purchase your windless.
Hi, I've been following you since the first days of your refit. I admit I get a little nervous now when I hear that you only have 90 days until your sweetheart comes on board. :) By the way, beautiful tulips in the background, happy Easter :)
Greetings Klaus
Goodbye Obelix, you were a wonderful ship! NGL, kinda sad to see that one go.
⬆️ but then again, we did she her motor by leaving her slip behind & has a new captain to take care of her.
Concerning leading the genoa sheets to the winch it is important that the sheet meets the angled base of the winch at roughly the same angle. One other thing is that you don't want to step on the sheet when leaving the cockpit because this is insecure footing . A good solution therefore is to have a block behind the winch. That way the genoa rail needs only be long enough to accommodate its lead block, from there the sheet runs to that aft block and up to the winch. You only need to install an eye bolt and a single block connected to it by a soft shackle.
Very many thanks. You motivated me to my first refit too.
heck yah!
Things seem to be progressing well.
Mads, I can't believe you're so close to actual sailing, well done fella it's been a great educational journey. Can't wait for the 'real' journey to begin, I really hope you have a meet up in the UK that I can attend. Best regards Paul UK.
A good BMS has a cold temperature charging cut off but also can turn on the silicon heating pads as needed to warm up the battery. Pads under the battery cells.
Never seen a BMS with a relay output for the battery heaters, but that sounds like a good idea !
The toerail looks awesome. I'd envisioned it myself from a hint in a previous video of yours. It's been many years but I think the (famous) Hiscocks sailing couple did this, and recommended it. I think it's perfect.
I'm in the market for a windlass mads but I'm in Ireland. That one looks perfect for my project. Great work as usual.
great update. congrats on becoming a single boat owner. Cheers from PEI Canada, Bryan
Great progress and some well thought out solutions. Good job getting Obelix sold quickly too as that will be one less thing on your mind.
Nice new TV hiding in the aft cabin 😀
Sunday is now complete spiffy
I guess the new owner is going to have a awesome summer in the danish south sea.
If spending winter in my country Scotland, your almost definitely going to need heat in your battery compartment, my e bikes batteries are lithium and I always have them in the house up to around 60 degrees for at least a couple of hours before I charge them, they will absorb charge gooderer that way and ,I am using one of them from 2015 and its still working well, I also find occasionally if I totally discharge them ie what ever one I am using, and have it nice and warm it will take a better charge.
I really want to see this boat when you get to the states.
Another great video.
Legend, keep up the good work!
Many boats use turning blocks placed aft of the winches to get the correct routing for the jib sheets...Athena is looking really good. Hats off for staying so focused on your vision and goals!
This.
I would like to add a good way to de-power the foresail is to run the car back as far as you can to flatten the sail in heavier winds. Conversely when sailing off the wind in light air it is nice to push the car up to round out the sail for more power. Having the ability to adjust the cars is helpful with sail shape. IMHO.
Looking forward to your videos underway soon.
Nice little Hy-Pro linear drive waiting to go in! I fitted the same one! 👍🏻
continued great work. Love the videos
Happy Easter ! Nice Tulips
Top effort Mads!!! starting to look pretty damn spiffy
