    More than anything, X felt like a dumping ground for all the designs they had lying around but had nowhere to put. The result is a mishmash of designs which all feel like they come from different Gundam series.

      Felt like a dumping ground for ideas too considering we have this whole post apocalypse UC universe with alternate Zeon and alternate Earth Federation and alternate Newtypes that we can't even come up with an alternate name for. Plus, also Jamil Neate being alternate Quattro/Char combined with Amuro.

  • @gaoexkaiser
    @gaoexkaiser 3 роки тому +16

    The identity of Newtypes is so integrated into Gundam X's society, it's similar to the real world, more and more labels with meaning are placed upon people resulting in an unneeded divide. We even tend to forget what those labels meant/ purpose to begin with. It's what unicorn Gundam/ mid UC missed by acknowledging Newtypes as a label to further divide people. The sad thing is it's not even out of bad intentions seen in Unicorn's Ending of Mineva's Speech.

    I really loved After War X and I think it pulled off the post apocalyptic thing a lot better than most pieces of media with that setting do. I'm extremely tired of post apocalyptic stories were for some reason decades after the apocalypse no one has done anything to rebuild or even things that would make obvious sense (looking at you Bethesda Fallout). Why in the world would people keep living in shacks of trash decades or even hundreds of years after the apocalypse? In After War X people have actually rebuilt and even in a way that makes sense, the world wasn't equally devastated by the apocalypse so there's variety in the level of rebuilding that has happened and the audience learns about this in a way that feels like we're learning about the world from the perspective of those in it. We start off the series in North America and it seems like there is no real organization at all, just towns that are completely on their own with roaming bandits and guns for hire and anyone who has a Mobile Suit terrorizes these towns. The first hint of government institutions we see is a singular lab which feels like it's a remnant of the Federation, the only thing left and as such has access to extremely advanced technology, far in excess of the Zaku like mechs used by the bandits. Then we get to that one winter town (I have forgotten it's name) and it again seems like a remnant more than anything another last vestige of the old world which has managed to protect it's wealth by having powerful mobile suit and the fact that the leader is from the Zeon of this world and seems to believe he's the only one left makes it really seem like the world has gone entirely kaput. The bit where all of the bounty hunters gang up against the good guys again makes it feel like there is nothing left of the old world since in most series you'd have an army vs the good guys but here we have a ragtag bunch of mercenaries with weird mobile suits. But then we get to the East Coast and we see cities that are far wealthier, and have trade with the rest of the world. Then we get to Hawaii which is basically an independent and fully functional state and then when we cross the Pacific into Asia we learn that not only are there complete and fuctional states with decently sized territory and standing armies but the Federation is not actually dead it was just beaten into hiding but is now making it's comeback and all of this time has been reconquering territory on Earth. And then we discover that the Zeeks are still alive and obviously are basically fine since they didn't get bombarded from orbit. All in all it's a way better take on post apocalypses than almost any other media with the same setting except for maybe the original Fallouts and New Vegas because unlike most media with this setting After War X doesn't for some reason want a perpetual apocalypse but instead depicts an actually reasonable take on it and has people actually act like they would in that setting. And the way we learn about that is perfect for our starting position because of course with how devastated North America is people born and living in it probably wouldn't even be slightly aware of what's going on even on their own continent much less the rest of the world.
    The series also kept positively surprising me in other ways. I really liked how the Char clone of this series was basically Amuro but what would happen if the federation had lost, it makes sense given how much like Char Amuro actually did become by the time of Zeta and it sorta feels like he basically became Char because he had been deprived of his own Char. I liked that the series actually made some pretty clever literary references and had a really interesting take on it. A lot of the characters also were really interesting, like the one mercenary who you think is kinda a womanizer but then in the episode where you think you're finally gonna see it at it's worst and you think we're gonna see all of his side chicks you learn that actually he's a really nice and considerate person. It's so nice to see exes in media that actually get along and it also makes sense that in a world like this he would make sure to check up on all of them and he makes sure to bring a flower for all of them. And as he says while talking with one of the exes this is a world were people die often and which is very unsafe (and that's in one of the better off North American towns) so it makes sense that he would check up on it. It's a more personal part of post apocalyptic settings but it's one that I'm glad the writers took care to consider and it's the sorta thing you wouldn't see in worse stories with the same setting.

      Also I liked seeing what was basically Wing designs but actually well executed and with good combat, and I'm glad that the main Gundam wasn't a Wing design.

    My big problem with X is it didn't do enough with the post-apocalyptic angle. Like, there should be micro-kingdoms and city-states jockeying for power and the Mobile Suit designs should be all over the place in much the same way Mad Max vehicles feel pieced together from whatever they can get their hands on. Instead the MS feel like boring off-brand UC designs and the world feels a bit too generic and eventually just restarts the Federation/Zeon conflict anyways.
    Otherwise, I loved a protagonist just being a perpetually underdog-feeling kid and some of the characters have a lot of charm. It all kind of felt like a beta-test for Eureka Seven.

    I really enjoyed the show, not as complicated or as nuanced as some gundam shows can be but the cast are all likable and Garrod and Tifa are just so cute. The philosophy part near the end is kinda overblown but it is not nearly as bad as the middle schooler’s philosophies that are so rampant in gundam wing. This show usually doesn’t try to be any more than it is and it is better for it.

    While Gundam X is my personal second favorite Gundam series (yes, I liked it that much) I do wish it did more with its post apocalyptic setting. I was hoping to see some destroyed cities, or even some nuclear hot zones but most of the series just mostly takes place in a desert. Sometimes we'll see a snowy landscape, or have a bunch of episodes take place in the ocean and, of course, space, but that's really it.

      They also reveal that not all of the earth apparently has been destroyed by the colony drops as some cities have been rebuilt. Hell in one city there's still a form of currency available to people. The vultures still talk about currency and being paid so apparently social order hasn't broken too much to the point where people are no longer caring about payments for things.

    I honestly never really had a problem with the pacing of the show. I mean compared to Gundam AGE the pacing in this is a million times more bearable, and I did t really feel like too much was rushed. Accept for when Garrod went off on his own to save Tifa. That really should’ve been longer, instead that plot is pretty much over before it even starts. My biggest problem with the show though would have to be the villains. The Frost brothers are honestly some of the most irritating villains in the series for me. My biggest issue being their arrogance. They always act cocky as if they have control over the situation all the time, but the problem is that none of their plans succeed. Seriously, they act all high and mighty but not a single one of their plans actually go off without a hitch, so why should I be threatened by them? They have their moments sure, but these guys are about as threatening as the villains in RWBY. And if you guys have seen RWBY you know that’s not a compliment.
    And I also agree that the post apocalyptic setting should’ve been expanded more, because once they go into space it just starts to look like every other Gundam show.

    Gundam X is my favor-no, wait, you're right. I actually like it a lot and have gone back to it a couple times, but... Gundam X is the answer to the question of whether the newtype subplots of the UC series could sustain a whole show. And nah, not really. There's a lot to like in this show: Garrod is likeable even in the whiny teenager phase of his character arc, the mechs are usually cool as hell, and there's a ton of action.

    After War Gundam X is one of the great "What If?" questions of anime. Both in the premise of "What if 0079 had gone horribly wrong?" and the fact we never got to see it done justice. What was the original story in full? This isn't a case of 'And then it derailed.' like Destiny, it's a situation where it never got the chance to be fully formed and they did the best with what they had. (Which is kind of ironically fitting for the setting now isn't it? Or for Turn A.)

    Gundam X's problem is that it's one (very good) concluding comment on a discussion that never happened outside of Japan. When the show comments on the nature and destiny of "Newtype", the Japanese audience don't just think it's talking about gimmicky fictional psychics, but the post war liberal aspirations of an entire generation, represented by shows like the original Mobile Suit: Gundam, CCA, Macross, Layzner, etc. The post-apoc setting of X is a timely in that sense because the show came out right around the time when Japanese consciousness, hit hard by the decade long recession(now three decades) started to shift back toward a more right leaning stance. Shows like X and NGE were the fulcrum of that cultural shift.

    • @thomasffrench3639
      @thomasffrench3639 Рік тому

      It’s kinda interesting how the Japanese recession started during the USA economic boom. It’s like how in the 70s and 80s had a boom for Japan when we weren’t doing well and how in the 40s and 50s it was the opposite.

    Correction. AW X Is my fav gundam series. I have my gripes with it but it remains my favored alt timeline Gundam series.
    Reason being It hits me like a D&D session or a adventure series. I love a anime or fictional world setting that shows me that world instead of just talking about it. I loved the idea of the world is free roam with our super weapons and could face enemy anywhere and have a land ship. Now the plot is definitely not super complex but its enough to drive whats here I feel despite the sad crunch in after loosing episode space.
    Gripes.. the ending themes are a bit too romantic for what I expect from gundam personally.. like it feels out of place.. Tiffa feels horribly flat for any human regardless of story trauma and again some spacing issues due to lack of episodes. The idea of the satellite energy cannon is a lil mcguffin plot device heavy at times.

  • @psychbabble8960
    @psychbabble8960 4 роки тому +7

    Just finished the series, so I can finally watch this without worry.
    X has issues and one of them is lack of aim. They make the theme of the show searching for meaning after the war but they never really find one. They use the newtype concept as a driving force to move from setting A to setting B but it never really feels like it affects any of the characters involved, not even the one newtype among the main characters.
    It also hurts the show to rely so much on the Frost Brothers who make the general repetition even worse. You can only see them escape while saying some vague mysterious lines and killing their own allies so many times before you just want them to end up dead.
    The first firing of the Satelite Cannon was a moment that I watched in clip form several times, impressed with the scene but also the weight of it. That such a deadly weapon was so carelessly used. But having seen the show I'm just thoroughly disappointed given that nobody really cares all that much about life. So many people are mindlessly killed in one of the many boring sequences of swarms of mobile suits trying to attack the main characters. But Garrod never cares as much as he did early on, and this is something that's never really adressed.
    The last stretch of the show finally finds a concise plot to stick with so it's many times better than the central third. But rushed as it is, it's too little too late.
    I liked the very few episodes just devoted to developing the characters, at the very least.

    Having said that I have to admit it has its flaws like the pacing and the music (and the show kinda goes downhill a bit after Garrod obtains the DX Gundam) but even then I enjoyed it a lot.
    It has some of the best moments in the franchise like the vapor explosion, episode 15, The Severns arc, Garrod's first sortie in the Double X, Garrod blowing up the colony laser and many, many more.

    now Turn A, though. that series is the bomb. the nuclear bomb.

    "...Gundam X is no one's favorite gundam..." I beg to differ. Certainly, it's not the best but this was actually my way into the UC side of Gundam (with help from the Super Robot Wars and SD Gundam G Generation games). Also, nothing tops the Satellite Cannon(s) in raw power (for a ranged beam weapon on an MS) and Tiffa is pre-millenium AU best girl (Allenby is a very close second).

    It... it was rushed as hell... but then again MSG had its episode count cut as well...
    ... but Gundam X is rather decent for what it is. It was trying to keep the tone from being too unbalanced and I applaud it.

      MSG doesn’t feel like the episodes were cut and it progressed naturally to its end point even if the last episode could have been split into 2 episodes for better pacing. Haven’t seen Gundam X tho

    Fun fact : Gundam X is UC it’s after when turn a used the Moonlight Butterfly move and years or decades after they find turn a but it’s also connected to 00 which I am so confused how
    Edit: the 00 part is fan made but wing is also connected so all the series before turn A were connected . g self takes place decades before x then centuries later you have turn A

    I have to admit I liked the characters from Wing better even if the show as more than a little confusing. The Frost brothers also might be some of the worst antagonists I have seen in a Gundam show. It's all " we want war because we aren't valued enough and we should be all that anyone thinks about!" It's like you guys sound like petty 6 year olds.

And they killed him after he said anything. Hell, they were pretty much so high in the Federation military chain of command they actually advised Bloodman on everything. I think it probably didn't help they cut episodes that might have detailed the past of these characters possibly.

      @@ericcaulfield4477 yeah, I agree. If it was intentional it could have worked if they hadn't cut episodes, and possibly Backstory, like you said, and they actually had more people talking about them. But, still, if them making them irrational and whatnot was on purpose, then I could see why it was done that way.

      @@heavykingfox9164 At best all the other military guys basically said at one point was that the Frost Brothers scared them basically. Like one of two lower rank guys talking just said in passing they gave them the creeps and that was pretty much it. I honestly don't think the writers had a clear plan on the Frost Brothers at all they just suddenly through having to wrap the show up got to be basically the main antagonists to the show.
      I would be thinking they would be more like Rau Le Crueset and just plain mad at humanity as a whole and want to see it wiped out.

      The AUs aren't really meant to be UC; they're meant to be their own thing while still having the series core pathos. Again, you're comparing a Thousand Chapter epic to a Standalone Novel. It literally makes no sense to compare them outside of them both having the name Gundam.
