The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

@@TomElvisSmith Bobby wasn’t in the group at the time and I don’t know if Nicky was in. Nicky and Tommy had performing together since 1955 but Nicky was in and out of the group due to playing with other groups and being in the Army. It was only from 1958 on that the group later known as the world famous first incarnation of the Four Seasons came into existence and ended in ‘65 with Nicky’s departure. He was replaced by Charlie Callelo first for a few months, then by Joe Long (or Joe LaBracio) who ushered in the second most successful era and should’ve been in the rock and roll hall of fame.

@@Frnk_3 completely agree with you regarding Joe Long belonging in the hall of fame. It’s a crying shame he was not included, considering he was in the band for 10 years and really contributed artistically to the band. So sad he passed away and you could hear it in his voice the hurt and disappointment on not being included with his former band mates. At least the New Jersey Hall of Fame did right by including him a couple of years back with Valli and Seasons.

WOW, Look at that sweet, sweet Cherry Red Gibson ES-355 with the varitone and with the Bigsby, instead of the sideways vibrato. Top of the Gibson ES Line. And that classic Fender Precision Bass with the anodized gold pickguard. WOW. The Ray Bloch Orchestra completely nails the arrangement; doesn't overplay the vocals. I was 12 and saw this exact performance, live on our small B&W in the living room. Listen close, at the beginning the string section is playing the riff to 'Sherry Baby'...cool~!...The Real Deal, Ladies and Gentlemen: A GIGANTIC Hit Record.

Yes, Frankie's voice, both tenor and falsetto, is instantly recognizable - and no the group at the time was using this harmony construction. The boys' backing harmonies are in the lower register which serves to highlight Frankie's higher lead vocal. I think Nick Massi arranged the harmonies - brilliant!

Notice no guitar leads attached to either the guitar or the electric bass. Also notice that the organ riff of "Sherry" in the beginning is NOT being played by Bob Gaudio at the organ (his finger motions do NOT correspond with the organ sound you hear). So apparently NONE of the instruments were plugged in in this clip.

A number of people are commenting on whether this is lip syncing because none of the instruments are plugged in. The guitars are obviously not really playing. The question is, is Valli singing? I suggest he is, mainly because the actual audio is terrible (unlike other Ed Sullivan music acts) - I think he is singing live but it is being captured on a rather distant boom mic, which is in turn picking up the now ambient sound of the band backstage. That's why it sounds like it's been recorded in a cave!
