  • Harry James and his Orchestra, 1942 Columbia records, on my 1939 Silvertone Radio Recorder. The audio you hear is through the amplifier taken off at the speaker (leaving the speaker connected keeps the balance correct or else the audio starts to sound grotesque). The original setscrew cartridge was changed for a stereo ElectroVoice model that has been wired mono. The needle is a 3 mil diamond needle designed for Crosley phonographs that I fitted to the shank of the ElectroVoice cartridge. I could just buy the cartridge for a Crosley, but the conversion was an afterthought. Prior-to I was using other needles until they became unavailable. The tonearm is counter-sprung for proper weight, so the entire set-up makes the records last much longer. I never use sapphire anymore. One chip and records are destroyed. Diamond doesn't chip. The sound and the video were recorded simultaneously, but the sound was dubbed into the video afterward, since my camera does not have a sound input. No equalization was done, although I added my own custom negative feedback to the amp a long time ago, and also added another 6V6G so that it is now push-pull. The second 6V6 takes its signal off of the screen grid of the first 6V6, saving an inverter tube. The phonograph is otherwise all original.

The speed consistency also adds to the amazing amount of music that you've managed to extract from this 1942 shellac 78 R.P.M record .. Also the tonal balance is excellent .. Also this band and Harry killed ! Harry had a lot of teeth replaced in 1948 .. This is 1942 !

The sound you've achieved is amazing.
I've the 78rpm also and in good shape, I'll try you're system as soon as I get a new turntable....just don't know which one to trust, they all look like they're overpriced or just plain junk.

Buy a diamond 78 needle for Crosley players on eBay. You can also buy the cartridge if you wish. I think that the cartridge attenuates treble a bit more than the ElectroVoice cartridge I use. Might give a well rounded sound. My 1939 Silvertone original ED speaker rounds off the treble nicely and gently, so in reality I don't hear all of the hiss that you hear here. If you choose to use a cartridge other than the stereo Crosley cartridge, just buy the needle. You can either remove the shank from the holder at the rubber bushing, and then fit this to another holder of a different design, or, if that's not practical, pick the needle out carefully with a razor blade. Pick out a needle in a shank design that you want to use. Carefully glue in the 3 mil diamond 78 needle with super glue. Should give you about 6 months playing time with regular use. This needle, for some reason, tears apart my GM 'When You Wish Upon A Star' record, but is amazingly gentle to all of my other records. Must be a particular groove shape.

td1238 Diamond will not chip or shatter like sapphire. Sapphire should not be used on 78s, with their abrasive slate/limestone powder (in shellac) surfaces, and with bits of steel needle imbedded in the grooves from steel needle use.

td1238 Also, I've noticed that the surface noise of this video is a lot more evident on my laptop speakers than on my headphones, so they might have higher frequency response. If you have an equalizer program, you can trim off the very high noise gently without otherwise destroying the recording.

td1238 I have found, though, that this Columbia pressing is very difficult to find in good condition. Whatever they used in the mixture for that particular pressing tears apart very quickly.
