Harry James and his Orchestra, Marion Morgan vocal, 1947, flip-side to 'Forgiving You' The 'nasally' sound is particular to the record. Either it was their equalization curve choice for the take or the physical properties of the recording head/cutting needle used for the take. Sounds kind of like they tried to push the treble too hard with a cutting head or amplifier that wasn't capable of prop...

Harry James and his Orchestra, 1942 Columbia records, on my 1939 Silvertone Radio Recorder. The audio you hear is through the amplifier taken off at the speaker (leaving the speaker connected keeps the balance correct or else the audio starts to sound grotesque). The original setscrew cartridge was changed for a stereo ElectroVoice model that has been wired mono. The needle is a 3 mil diamond n...

    I absolutely adore how I can search ‘Clair de lune gramophone’ and actually come up with something so I can hear the sound quality and get a vibe for it. Bravo internet. Bravo.

    The speed consistency also adds to the amazing amount of music that you've managed to extract from this 1942 shellac 78 R.P.M record .. Also the tonal balance is excellent .. Also this band and Harry killed ! Harry had a lot of teeth replaced in 1948 .. This is 1942 !

    So this was released 32 years after Debussy publication, how come it took so long if gramophones already existed in the 1910's and 1920's?

      Mr_x 1992 Using a gramophone at that time was very difficult: Firstly because it was very expensive; Secondly because a single error and we had to start all over again from the beginning (the vibrations of the sound on the speaker engraved the song on a cylinder, well, it's more complex, obviously.). Basically, an error and a new cylinder was needed. I guess this version was recorded with an electric microphone which was much simpler and which made the sound better ...

      @youwerethere Рік тому

      Records from early times were recorded acoustically, which took a hit on quality of the sound. This is an electric record which has better quality and as such can capture the song better

    BABY, WHAT YOU DO TO ME (LYRICS) Newman / James / George as recorded by Helen Forrest with The Les Paul Trio December 28th, 1945 When the ghost of a grin Starts to dimple your chin, What a dither I'm in, Oh baby, what ya do to me! When you wrinkle your nose, There's a shiver that grows Till it tickles my toes, Oh baby, what ya do to me! With each sweet glance Your eyes are kissin' mine, And bluebirds dance In clover all over my spine! When ya lend me your lips And my heart's doin' flips, Comes a total eclipse, Oh baby, what ya do to me! With each sweet glance Your eyes are kissin' mine, And bluebirds dance In clover all over my spine! When ya lend me your lips And my heart's doin' flips, Comes a total eclipse, Oh baby, what ya do to me! Baby, baby, what ya do to me! (Transcribed by Peter Akers - January 2013)

    Thanks for putting Harry James' version on UA-cam; must say that I prefer Jo Stafford's recording. The song and its lyrics, I feel, have a lot more emotional impact at a slower tempo.

      I find that James'/Morgan's version has more of an unemotional "Screw this crap" feel to it, which is how I feel lately.

    The sound you've achieved is amazing. I've the 78rpm also and in good shape, I'll try you're system as soon as I get a new turntable....just don't know which one to trust, they all look like they're overpriced or just plain junk.

      Buy a diamond 78 needle for Crosley players on eBay. You can also buy the cartridge if you wish. I think that the cartridge attenuates treble a bit more than the ElectroVoice cartridge I use. Might give a well rounded sound. My 1939 Silvertone original ED speaker rounds off the treble nicely and gently, so in reality I don't hear all of the hiss that you hear here. If you choose to use a cartridge other than the stereo Crosley cartridge, just buy the needle. You can either remove the shank from the holder at the rubber bushing, and then fit this to another holder of a different design, or, if that's not practical, pick the needle out carefully with a razor blade. Pick out a needle in a shank design that you want to use. Carefully glue in the 3 mil diamond 78 needle with super glue. Should give you about 6 months playing time with regular use. This needle, for some reason, tears apart my GM 'When You Wish Upon A Star' record, but is amazingly gentle to all of my other records. Must be a particular groove shape.

      td1238 Diamond will not chip or shatter like sapphire. Sapphire should not be used on 78s, with their abrasive slate/limestone powder (in shellac) surfaces, and with bits of steel needle imbedded in the grooves from steel needle use.

      td1238 Also, I've noticed that the surface noise of this video is a lot more evident on my laptop speakers than on my headphones, so they might have higher frequency response. If you have an equalizer program, you can trim off the very high noise gently without otherwise destroying the recording.

      td1238 I have found, though, that this Columbia pressing is very difficult to find in good condition. Whatever they used in the mixture for that particular pressing tears apart very quickly.

  • @td1238
    @td1238 10 років тому

    Although it's amazing to hear the full range these records have to offer, I must say that the original speaker on my phonograph very effectively curves off the surface noise in a pleasing way that doesn't otherwise ruin the music. I have yet to produce an equalization curve that I like that does a similar job, so I just leave it wide open for the video.
