- Whirlpool is a 1950 American film noir thriller directed by Otto Preminger and written by Ben Hecht and Andrew Solt, adapted from the 1946 novel Methinks the Lady... by Guy Endore. The film stars Gene Tierney, Richard Conte, José Ferrer and Charles Bickford, and features Constance Collier in her final film role. Its plot follows the insomniac wife of a wealthy Los Angeles psychoanalyst who, after a chance meeting with a hypnotist, is charged with a violent murder.
Owing to anti-British statements screenwriter Hecht had made in the recent past concerning the United Kingdom's involvement in Israel, prints of the film initially circulated in the country replaced his credit with the pseudonym Lester Barstow.

How I wish we still dressed up like the 50s and 60s now....... always decently dressed wherever we go.... ❤❤❤
I certainly agree 😏 miss Misty ...
You can wear whatever you want
I miss hats.
Yes
And weren't the hair styles gorgeous
Why don't you?
I used to watch these movies with my mom as a kid, usually after school, sitting in front of our b&w TV with the rabbit ears. They'd come on a program called The Early Show, these 50s-era films that featured women whose wardrobes featured a lot of evening gowns for parties & nightclubbing. I really thought (I was 10) this was how my life would be as an adult: I'd grow up to move to NYC, work as a secretary, rent an apt with roommates, & go out dancing after work where one day I'd meet my future husband...Spencer Tracy or Cary Grant. Funny how these films could suggest a lifestyle to a little Negro girl from Chicago whose dad was a bus driver and whose mom was a housewife and artist. But I loved these films. This is the first time I've seen Whirlpool. The story unfortunately collapses in the 3rd act but, on the whole, it's still entertaining. Gene Tierney's most memorable roles--The Razor's Edge, Laura--are still favorites of mine. I did grow up & move to NYC, not for a secretarial job but to attend NYU grad school. I didn't own any evening gowns--just jeans & t-shirts. By the 70s, life had changed.
Oh my gosh, that was my fantasy, exactly. Also, I was going to wear white gloves when commuting to the city on the train.
@@CLT51154 I'm delighted to learn that others were affected similarly. All these years and i've never owned an evening gown. But I did go out clubbing on weekends!
@@MajorKeys714 I’m a designer/ dressmaker. I’ve been doing it for 55 years and a big part of my motivation was having the clothes I couldn’t afford. I recently finished a Prada knock off coat that’s delicious. Fashion still thrills me, but these days you have to look a little harder for it. 💕
@@CLT51154 you're talking to a huge fan of Project Runway. I admire the creativity and skill set of those who sew & design fashion. Way back in the day, girls were required to take courses in the "domestic arts" in junior high--cooking & sewing. Gosh,I remember how tough it was just to learn how to thread & operate the sewing machine! Although it was a struggle, I did manage to make an apron, then onto using a pattern to make a fashionable top. That was the last and only time i sewed anything. But for many women in my family, making their clothes--skirts, dresses, prom dresses--was the best way to dress affordably. I'd like to see a photo of the Prada coat. I have a proton email if you'd care to brag on yourself by sharing a pic. And while I don't sew, I do knit & crochet. I love making hats. Dress gloves were part of our Sunday outfit for church. White gloves that came up to the wrist. My mom loved fashion & always bought me what was trending: I remember being the only girl to have a balloon dress. She also got me a Ben Casey dress & I was the first kid to own a skortHave you ever watched The Expanse, a sci fi series on Amazon? One of the leading characters, Chrisjen Avasarala, a diplomat, is always dressed to the nines in some remarkable outfits. I hope you keep in touch. I'm always open to talk films & fashion with enthusiasts. 55 years? Wow. 🎥 🪡🧵
♥️I love this comment. I watched these 1950s films as a little girl with my grandma, in socialist Yugoslavia that was falling apart at the time, the 1990s. And I, too, imagined I would grow up and that that's what my adult life would look like, and that I would get to wear those beautiful feminine gowns, and more importantly, do those lovely romantic things.
I, too, regret that the world had changed so much, and for the worse, from the 1970s onwards.
I did manage to score "the next best thing".
My husband. Born in late 1970s Paris, he, too, watched a lot of these old American movies with his own grandparents. And he is the kindest, most well-raised, gentleman-like, 1950s style old-fashioned person I've ever met. In 2010s Paris, of all places, where people are nothing but egotistical and rude and engage in all sorts of immoral behavior.
We're definitely going to have kids watch the 1950s movies with us, because it certainly does something to a young person's psyche that we want for the world's future generation.
When I watch black and white old movies, they make me feel safe and happy as yesterdays we're simple and a slower pace of life. No foul language or sexual scenes. When I am sad and feel lonely these movies are a must.
I can go back in time and feel comforted somehow because it was a happy time.
Sweet.. I feel the same way. My mom used to watch these and still does. I was like..🙄 not again, lol but now it’s me and my kidos😂 Someday they’ll have an appreciation for these movies as I do now.
How right you are. Movies from 1930s - 1950s were excellent and easy on the soul.
Oh how times change…1950’s movies….twin beds and dressing gowns, and polite chit chat with no punctuated “F” word heard anytime. What a nice relief!
*I'm glad people notice the " separate beds"!! Haha!!!
The twin bed I decoder had todo with the menopause.
No Asians. No Black people No gays. I love these films for what they are. But far from perfect they are.
This was in the 1950s okay I don't think I want to anything else
I couldn’t agree with you more.
I wish they still made movies with this kind of dialogue and characters. Not a single curse word among them!
They had strict censorship until early 50s: adultery, seduction, rape, abortion only suggested, always punished; no vulgar expressions and racial epithets; no prostitution, nudity, drugs, erotic dances, excessive kissing and drinking; no cruelty to animals, children, no image of surgical operations even in silhouette; and you wont see married couples sharing same bed; no details of a crime, criminals punished, suicide and murder avoided.
It doesn't take intelligence these days to repeat the same few vulgarities over and over...
So many movies/TV shows today have so much cursing it ruins the show, because that's all you hear! Really despise the swear words, but I don't live alone. These older movies are wonderful to me!
So true and it is indicative of the world's decay🙏🏼🇺🇸🔥
@@TheBlues088so they were FORCED to actually be creative😇such a shame😢
Darn good tv… They had about a quarter of the technology we have today and these shows are still far more entertaining. Again much thanks for sharing these treasures.
What a smooth, slick, brilliant performance by José Ferrer ... an actor who should never be forgotten. His subtle use of facial expressions, little pauses, body language ... just wonderful.
He's terrific isn't he?
@@kaydee4296 Thanks for pointing that out. You're right.
Vin Diesels voice.😂

Chris, thank you so much for adding this jewel! Oh and another THANKS for no commercials. Gene Tierney was an outstanding actress.
Yes, Chris!💜🕊🙏😘 You’ve made a lot of people so happy! My husband passed away, and I’m disabled now after an extremely lengthy career as an ER/TRAUMA RN......one of my greatest joys is watching these FANTASTIC “old” black and white films, starring some of the greatest film actors and actresses the world has ever known! God bless and safely keep you always, in Jesus’s Precious Name, AMEN!

As you appreciate Gene Tierney, be sure to see Laura (1944, directed by Otto Preminger).
That story has so many moving parts -- I can watch it again and again!
Outstanding.

I’ve gotten hooked on these types of movies lately, far fetched from being a fan of horror films, I love the era and style of these older movies, the beautiful homes, cars and styles of dress, just good and pure entertainment, without the overwhelming sex, gut wrenching violence and excessive profanity use. They do all of their dirty dealings in a good clean way!!
I started watching only 'classic' movies a few years ago! The new stuff is just CRAP!
@@mr.blackhawk142 amen and the disgusting vomiting scenes that they have added.

@@charleschristopherson6773 It's spelled ASSome!
What a great story and superbly acted. We get nothing of this calibre any longer and it's a pleasure to re-visit a great old film.
How can you say that when there are no car chases or gun battles or anything exciting?
HollyWEIRD just MIRRORS the sickness in our present society!
I second your thought!
Ben Hecht on screenplay, Alfred Newman (Randy’s uncle) on the musical score, Otto Preminger on direction and Gene Tierney gracing the screen. I've seen it once, but here l am again..happily.
I'm also in love with the style of dress. I'm a dressmaker and I can't get enough of the construction of fashion.❤️❤️❤️😎
Proper haircuts that shaped the face, none of the messy strings around the face and toxic haircolours and body tattoos disfiguring the body.
I thought this was not a flattering hair style for Ms. Tierney. She needed more hair to balance out her broad shoulders. Beautiful face, but kept thinking how she needed to have long hair and bit fuller.
She was so beautiful that even stringy hair wouldn’t have ruined her looks!
With a face like hers any hairstyle would look great
Indeed, to say nothing of the leather punched flesh. We are all made in God’s image.
Too bad it’s lost on the current crop of miscreants.
You must be , religious.
Gene Tierney and Kathryn Grayson were two of the most beautiful actresses in Hollywood. Richard Conte was a fantastic actor. Gene Tierney later lost a child and was unfortunately given electrical shock therapy which ruined her mentally. Terrible demise for such a,wonderful actress.
Jose Ferrer - underrated as a great actor and a scary villain ! Good movie.
Jose Ferrer did his own stunt when he fell down the staircase at the end.
@@personanongrata987I see/hear a resemblance to Vin Diesel in Mr. Ferrer…. Not related, as I can find though.
I don't think he was underrated just because no one NOW knows who he was. That term underrated is so overused about people from previous eras of all genres.
@@kaydee4296I'm so tired of seeing the word "underrated" used for just about anything these days.
I was traveling with my sister to Florida via a plane. Sitting in the waiting check in area was Jose Ferrer!,, I walked over introduced myself and asked for his autograph! What an exciting time!
I love these types of movies. I remember them growing up as a kid. I don't waste time watching the new stuff. It doesn't compare.
Never tire of seeing this movie! It has all the elements of excellence!
This movie has a all star cast! Jose Ferrer could be one smooth operator! What a pro!
Great plot!
Thank you for sharing!
Jose Ferrer! I remember him as Toulouse Lautrec, the painter of burlesque dancers, and whose deformed legs made it impossible for him to hope for romance & a family.

@@STORMY0O I see movies differently to you, Stormy.
As a child I discovered a jazz station on my radio in my room. At night the jazz music stopped and old radio shows came on, including old commercials in the place where regular commercials would go between shows. Bob and Ray, part of their show was a soap opera where Bob and ray played all the characters. The sound effects were great and the show was hysterical. Burns and Allen which was also very funny. I can’t remember what else because I was probably 14. It went on for hours and I fell asleep to it. When I woke up in the morning I was very disappointed that I woke up in normal reality and not in the reality that was portrayed in the radio shows. These were on every Sunday I believeAnd shaped my childhood forever. I began watching old movies I knew many actors my grandparents knew. I’m very disappointed my son does not know who any actors from the 30s 40s and 50s are. But I will always love Bob and Ray, And burns and Allen, and the old soap commercials From the radio. When I was older I looked into how they made the sound Effects On the radio and it was genius.
*I love Love talk radio!
I believe that Nikola Tesla’ channel has the radio show.
I hope that you can share the Jazz station.

Thank you! Wonderful! Great acting. And Gene Tierney was so very beautiful. Grace Kelly, who came later, had the same accent, and same manner. I think she learned a great deal from Gene Tierney. Both very beautiful women. Both great actresses.Thank you again.
Gene Tierney's husband, Oleg Cassini, designed her wardrobe for most of her films. He did a great job. He also designed for Grace Kelly and Jackie Kennedy. He was very talented.
Extremely!
Grace Kelly's family didn't approve of him
Oleg Casino was once engaged to Grace Kelly
I've never seen this...until tonight!! I love it!!!! Thank you so much!! ♡ The glamor, the intrigue, the hair, makeup, fashions, beautiful homes, the stars. It's perfect.♡
I’m watching it for the first time today 12/20/2022! Interesting and intriguing!!!
December 21st 2022 at 7:22pm…..great movie!
I started watching this after midnight last night. Although I could simply put on pause and watch the rest at an earlier time of day, I couldn't tear myself away.
My first watch too. 26/12/23 😁
That little Ford convertible would be an absolute dream to own these days.
Still!
Getting hooked on films from the 1940s and 1950s, including the B movies, but this one is superb and so gorgeous to look at with the elegant clothes, interiors and cars. Gene Tierney is excellent in this film, she is so beautiful too and her face reminds me of my late mother in her younger days. David is such a creepy character, brilliantly played. Richard Conte was a fine actor too who was only 65 when he died of a heart attack in 1975. I also like the actor playing the police detective. Although the plot is a bit hard to believe, it still works and the tension builds throughout. Glad I watched it and also fascinating to read about Gene Tierney online, never knew that she had severe depression, or that she had had a brief fling with JFK in 1946.
Excellent movie! Omg, how I wish I could time travel back to 1949! Everyone here talking about the lovely clothes the women wore, which is true, but what about the houses! They were huge! The rooms were huge! I love the old style furnishings of the 40’s & 50’s. And the hospital, it was more like a HOTEL! I worked in a hospital as a nurse for years but it never was THAT QUIET! LOL All the acting was superb & Ms. Tierney was absolutely beautiful. Loved this movie & so glad you shared it! ❤
@Alexis Valere I totally agree about the sets. The houses and, especially the apartment layouts/decor from the 40s, 50s movies were just as great as the wardrobes. Even in the apartments that were supposed to be of low and middle income characters. Have you noticed the layouts of the apartments/houses for the 1940s-50s films: Laura, Rear Window, How To Murder My Wife (my favorite), Indiscreet, How To Marry A Millionaire, Designing Woman...? And the offices in Sabrina - to name a few... I know I'm forgetting a lot of other ones. .
Sometimes I'll rewind and pause scenes just to get a better view of the sets and decor and see if the layouts are realistic architecturally. I used to (still do) image myself living in them especially ones that had a room/space that could be my studio.
I was born in 1945 and I remember our doctor coming to our house and giving me a shot in the rear. It never hurt. Great times back then, I miss em.
@@tiwantiwaabibiman2603 I like to study the sets and decor of these old movies, too. And yes, I like to imagine myself living in such a lovely place.

A great scene is when the character of José Ferrer tries to hypnotize himself in front of the mirror. This same year (1950), José Ferrer won the Oscar for Best actor in a leading role in the film "Cyrano de Bergerac".

I sure wish they still made movies like this.
Great that her husband took some responsibility for their problems, especially in a 50s movie. Excellent movie all the way around!
She has freedom to slide across the seat and leave by passenger door. A bygone luxury.
Brilliantly conceived and executed tale about an emotionally unstable woman manipulated by a con artist in a most unusual and clever way.
Great point.
Unstable people are easily manipulated 😅

" EL Stupido"........I can Pluck her Forehead......tighten up....
The way the glass breaks and meeting at the bar storyline plays out is diabolical. 😂
The photography in black and white seemed to heighten the drama,, and the actors seemed so more involved and believable in the story.

I have been watching quite a few black and white old movies for several days in a row and like so much your selection that I’ve decided to subscribe in your channel. Thank you for educating us in the old cinema makers.
Gene Tierney has always been a favorite of mine. Thanks for the upload! 👍🤗♥️
I love these old movies. Without all the trappings of an R rating, the actors and plot can really shine.

nice movie, superior picture as well sound quality. this golden era of hollywood would never return
I watched many oldies with my dad when I was a kid we dont as often now though. It's such a blessing having almost everything at hand. And it gives me a feeling of Nostalgia when seeing these on UA-cam 😊
Otto Preminger never disappoints! Gene Tierney's acting was top notch (especially when conveying a dazed hypnotic state), the wardrobe was chic and gorgeous (especially for the ladies' party dresses), and the suspenseful conspiracy plot was filled to the brim with clever manipulation ploys (I legitimately thought to myself "ohhh, so _that's_ what he did that for!" several times throughout the film).
I love watching these black and white movies 🍿 💖💕
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THESE OLDER MOVIES. THE LADIES WERE BEAUTIFUL, LOVE THE FASHION AND THE DECOR. TRULY TALENTED WRITTERS, DIRECTORS AND ACTORS. I CAN GET LOST IN TIME WATCHING THEM.

Very good examples of gaslighting in this movie.
Was Gene Tierney gorgeous or was she gorgeous?!!! Major drop dead gorgeous than any current Hollywood stars!!!
That opening is amazing!!!! 3 minutes in and I"m hooked.
It is good feeling to see people take good care of their home, own appearance, good manners, self respect ……
Gene Tierney- what a beauty! I love the film ' Laura' opposite Dana Andrews. So sad that her condition of manic depression was handled so badly ( as it often was, back then.)
Thank you for uploading this without ads. I am very grateful.
These B/W movies are far far better than the Colour movies, I have ever seen.
I am certainly hooked on them. I watch one, in a week. It certainly diverts my mind, from the demanding work on Computer.
One nice Colour movie is " Duel ", by Steven Spielberg, which I strongly recommend. Over simplified, but, yet gripping.
Wait you like colorized movies in the 50s
I'm incredibly grateful. Quite some time since I last saw! Excellent period. Casting is excellent. Richard Conte is one of the all-time greats, although Tierney is lovely as always and Ferrer is menacing. A top performer in his era! Preminger's direction is almost flawless, and Arthur Miller's camerawork is excellent! Wonderful to see this again!
Certainly an underrated noir, it improves with each viewing. Jose Ferrer completely steals the movie and Gene Tierney is always wonderful. Richard Conte has been better, but he makes his role work. Charles Bickford, Constance Collier and the inimitable Fortunio Bonanova are all great in their supporting roles. All in all a great film. They just don't make them like this anymore.
