- Prominent novelist Richard Harland (Cornel Wilde) is released from prison after serving a two-year sentence. He goes to Maine, and is met by his attorney, Glen Robie (Ray Collins), who sends Richard off in a canoe to Richard's lodge, then relates his story to a companion:
A few years ago, while writing a novel, Richard accepted an invitation from Glen to vacation at his ranch in New Mexico. During the train ride, Richard is left breathless by the striking beauty of a socialite, Ellen Berent Harland (Gene Tierney) who comments on his close resemblance to her late father. Richard is greeted at the station by Glen, who reveals that Ellen is also visiting the Robie family with her mother, Mrs. Margaret Berent (Mary Philips), and adopted sister, Ruth Berent (Jeanne Crain). They have come to scatter her father's ashes at his favorite spot in the mountains.
Richard confesses to Ellen that he questioned Glen about her fiancé, attorney Russell Quinton (Vincent Price). She coolly declares she has taken off her engagement ring.
Russell comes to the ranch, having received a telegram from Ellen breaking their engagement, and despite his misgivings, Richard cannot resist Ellen and the couple are married. After a brief honeymoon, the newlyweds travel to Georgia, where Richard's beloved, teenaged brother, Danny Harland (Darryl Hickman), is recovering from polio. Richard is touched by Ellen's attentions to Danny.
At the lodge, Ellen is frustrated by the presence of Danny and Leicke Thorne (Chill Wills), an old family friend, and resents the time Richard spends writing, which spurs a violent, obsessive, and dangerous jealousy in her.
Margaret and Ruth show up, and Richard is appalled by his wife's hostility toward her mother and sister. Ellen even accuses Richard of being in love with Ruth, then tearfully begs for his forgiveness by telling him that she cannot bear to share him with anyone else. Margaret and Ruth leave soon after, and one afternoon, Ellen accompanies Danny on his daily swim in the lake. Ellen follows in a rowboat behind Danny and urges him on, but when a cramp hits the exhausted boy and he cries for help, she watches impassively as he drowns. Richard seems to accept Ellen's explanation that Danny's death was an accident, but as time passes, he becomes mired in a deep depression.
Hoping to rejuvenate Richard's love, Ellen becomes pregnant, and Richard eagerly anticipates the birth of their child. The couple have moved to the Berent home in Bar Harbor, and as her pregnancy progresses, Ellen comes to loathe the baby and fears that it will come between her and Richard. After telling Ruth that she longs for "the little beast" to die, Ellen throws herself down a flight of stairs and causes the death of her unborn baby. Upon Ellen's return from the hospital, Ruth is unable to bear her sister's malevolence any longer and prepares to leave for Mexico, which is the setting of Richard's just-published novel. Furious that the book is dedicated to Ruth and not to her, Ellen confronts Richard and confesses that she murdered Danny and their baby.
When Richard leaves her, Ellen concocts an elaborate scheme to frame Ruth for her "murder," then kills herself with arsenic. Ruth is brought to trial by Russell, who is now the State District Attorney, and Ellen's careful plans, including asking Richard to scatter her ashes with her father's, stack the evidence against Ruth. While she is being questioned, Ruth admits to being in love with Richard but maintains her innocence. Unable to let Ruth suffer, Richard takes the stand and reveals the depths of Ellen's jealous depravity.
The story almost completed, Glen tells his friend at the lake that while Ruth was acquitted, Richard was sentenced to two years in prison for being an after-the-fact accessory to Ellen's unreported crimes.
As Glen finishes the tale, Richard paddles up to the cabin, where Ruth welcomes him with a loving embrace.
A 1945 American psychological thriller film-noir melodrama film directed by John M. Stahl, produced by Darryl F. Zanuck, adapted for the screen by Jo Swerling, based on the 1944 novel of the same name by Ben Ames Williams, starring Gene Tierney, Cornel Wilde, Jeanne Crain, Vincent Price, Mary Philips, Ray Collins, Gene Lockhart, Reed Hadley, Gertrude Astor, Darryl Hickman, and Chill Wills.
Shot in Technicolor. It was Twentieth Century-Fox's highest-grossing film of the entire decade. The film uniquely blurs genres, featuring elements of film-noir, psychological thrillers, and melodramas, and makes numerous visual and narrative references to figures in Greek mythology.
The title is from William Shakespeare's "Hamlet", in which the Ghost urges Hamlet not to seek vengeance against Queen Gertrude, but to "leave her to heaven, and to those thorns that in her bosom lodge to prick and sting her."
The film was selected for the U.S. National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." - Фільми й анімація
She’s hypnotically beautiful! And she played this role perfectly!
Well put. Thanks for the visit!
I believe Gene Tierney got an Oscar nomination in her performance as a monster of a human being.
Gene Tierney played a narcissist so well - I wanted to hate her for how she represented one of those monsters.
This was one of my late mother’s favorite movies. They just don’t make movies like this anymore, I’m so grateful to find a lot of good classics here on UA-cam.
Welcome. And remember, your mother lives on through you.
I watched this many years ago as an adolescent on TV. I was so shocked by it that I never forgot it. I'm now waiting anxiously to watch it unfold once again. Thanks for the upload.

@@lolee1234 an adolescent on TV??? How did you get on the TV??? :P
I was always late too, then I bought a Timex! "Takes a LICKING, keeps on....ticking!"
This is one of my favorite movies. Gene was absolutely gorgeous but it was also nice to see how handsome Vincent Price was in his younger years. It was a blessing they made this in color ❤
Glad you enjoyed it! Welcome.
Yes VP looks so young and half-way normal (not EVIL) without his mustache! L0L
They were in Laura together
This is a rarity to have what many consider a “Film Noir” to be made in technicolor.
But I think this film being filmed in colour softens the “Hateful” Ellen…..
I loved them both in Laura ❤
From the beginning there are red flags - the endless staring on the train, the creepy father fixation, the way she announces their engagement before her future husband knows anything about it... she is one carnivorous butterfly.
I agree, beautiful women who know that they are beautiful are just that!
Thanx! I found that announcement odd and surprising too, but I din know she was gonna turn into THE bitch from HELL either! I'm over half way into the movie now.
Welcome.
@@mr.blackhawk142 Your comment would have been really funny, but the misogyny killed it. Oh well.
@@emilerose1424 Bad men... bad women... I've known both. And lots of nasty words to call both.
Brilliant film Noir, Tierney and Crane, great beauties!! Of a bygone age.
Roger that. Thanks for the visit!
Yup! Crane was also great in Hogan's Heroes! :P
Ha ha ha
This movie, is one of the most memorable, and captivating films. All great actors from that era. Gene Tierney and Jeanne Crain, were two very beautiful women. Some woman are so lovely on the outside, but are so dark on the inside, and can fool people, with their beauty.
Welcome, and thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Some womEn are lovely on the outside also!
Hey Gene! Bronco Nagurski called and wants his SHOULDERS back!!! :P
Gene Tierney and Cornel Wilde were so beautiful to look at. I love watching these classic movies when actors were actors and you can hear each word clearly. Jeanne Crain the sister is also so beautiful. great casting in this Movie.
Me, too. Welcome.
Gene Tierney was one of my favorite actresses.
I love her in Laura.
She gave me chills in this role.
🩷💙💙🩷🩵
Thank you so much for this.
Welcome.
Agreed, talk about the chills, especially when she says, look at me( when she's pregnant) I hate the little beast, I wish it would die...she was horribly evil, but so good in this role, she definitely should have won the academy over Joan Crawford, but Joan was good in her role too, I guess it was time for her to win that year...🙄
How did she get inside Laura???
Vincent Price was in Laura as well
Itd be nice to see Kim Novak, as she was also devilish.
Ms. Tierney had it in her contract to never alter her teeth or hair. Unusual for her time. To me, she remains the most beautiful woman of film history.
Yes she refused to have her teeth altered. It would have been a shame. It gave her a sweet charm on top of her gorgeous features.
“I want to keep your house, wash your clothes and cook your food.” Whew! Those were the days.
Be careful what you ask for 😳
If only train travel were like this today!
a color noir and a beaut. The amazing acting job Darryl Hickman did in the lake almost killed him due to the director's endless takes. Gorgeous color, John Stahl's excellent direction and all around fine acting make this a must watch.
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for the visit!

Yeah....Darryl Hickman...loved him with Vincent in the " Tingler".
Wow. What a movie. A horrible tale of the deeds of a twisted mind but superbly cast and brilliantly acted, with beautiful locations and backdrops. Bravo, bravo to all involved.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Gene Tierney was strikingly beautiful yet never considered on a high level as Elizabeth Tylor or Vivian Leigh I wonder why ? She should have been .
I think she was more famous in her time than now
Elizabeth was made even more famous in her private life and working life with Richard Burton
Plus she had her day more recently more a star of 50s and 60s
Which makes a difference
And is known to people still living through other things like friendship with Michael Jackson and that dude who left Debbie Reynolds for Elizabeth
Vivien Leigh was in high profile things like Gone with the wind
And being married to Laurence olivier
All people known to people not that aged today Tuerney is older than both
She may not have been as ambitious as Leigh who seriously was mad to be known as a great actress
And GWTW was guaranteed to make her into a star,
Most popular novel of its time
Every actress was scrambling to be in it
And Leigh must have out-scrambled them all😂❤
Plus she really looked like the heroine from that novels description and was lucky to be quite young
At that time
And looked more like the 18 year old Scarlett
Dude is Eddie Fisher, a very famous situation at that time, Fisher and Reynolds were celebs and parents to Carrie Fisher
Studio heads back then promoted who they deemed “worthy.” Maybe Gene didn’t play the game.
Welcome.
Gene Tierney and Jeanne Crain were so beautiful. Cornel Wilde was no slouch either!
Thanks for watching!
he reminds me of Victor Mature in this movie.
I love watching this movie especially that it's in color! Great characters wonderful acting... Cornell Wilde eyes stare Gene Tierney DOWN...if looks could kill... WOW! He scared me just watching him!!
Glad you enjoyed it! Welcome.
His REAL name is Kornel Weisz, and I thought the same about his eyes.
@@DonaldPBorchersOG oh I have watched it several times... It's a very unusual movie.
the only other movie I can recall seeing with Cornell Wilde was an early 1970's movie called "Sharks Treasure".
My mother worked as a private nurse in La Jolla next to Mr. Wilde. He liked my mother and wanted to date her.....she thanked him and explained she had a gentleman friend.

Quelles beautés... Ces deux acteurs sont presque irreels tellement sublimés par des plans parfaits ..Gene Tyernay surnommée "the face" et Jeanne crain tout aussi remarquable. Ce cinéma suranné nous fait encore rêver.,
This is one of my most favorite movies of all time. Her obsession with him is insane
Glad you like it. Welcome.
Mr. Price made more than one flick with Ms. Tierney. He said when they did a scene he would have trouble concentrating on the job at hand, being so mesmerized by the lady’s beauty, said to be even more stunning in person.
There is no talent like there was when these movies were made….
Roger that. Thanks for the visit!
No, I disagree. The acting in Lord Of The Rings was exemplary.
Plus, there are a good many other actors in more modern times that far exceed the standard of these times, and it's unfair to round them up with the shabby offerings made by the woke crowd.
We all know they're really very bad indeed.
But there are plenty of really good actors about still: Emma Thompson, JJ Fields, Kieran Hinds, Simon Callow, Ewan McGregor, Dame Judi Dench, the late Alan Rickman, Maggie Smith, Ian McKellan, the late Christopher Lee, and David Suchet - to name but a very few.
One of my favorite films. Thanks for posting! This film is visually stunning. Color Noir is an interesting description.

Glad you like it. Welcome.
One of my very favourite movies - visually stunning and gripping throughout - oh and Gene Tierney WOW😍😍😍
The actresses in the period of time this movie was made always looked so good, elegant and classy without having everything on show. I don't know if it was like that outside of the film studios for ordinary people though but a lesson you can look great but dress decently!

I just loved her so much in the. "Ghost and Mrs. Muir"
Gene Tierney was ALSO beautiful!
The opening train scene takes on new meaning if you watch it again at the end of the movie. After you know her true character, you have to wonder if Ellen knew all along that Harlan would be on the train, given that they were headed to the same host's house. You have to wonder if she orchestrated that meeting, all the way through letting the book drop just to get him to engage. Run Sheep, Run! Great film. Thanks for posting.
Welcome. Thanks for sharing your insights.
I thought the same thing. I really do believe their meeting was definitely orchestrated. She played the "innocent" so well it's seriously creepy. Ellen is psychotic. Something is deeply wrong with her and it's a shame we don't ever find out exactly why. It's a great film for therapists to review and study. I highly recommend reading the novel by Ben Ames Williams. Gives you much more insight into Ellen's obsessive nature.
@@TronandFlynn82 Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
@@TronandFlynn82Maybe some childhood trauma, neglect or indifference by her biological father since she was adopted and not truly part of this family. A very interesting movie indeed. ❤

1:07:25 is one of my favorite scenes in the movie. Ellen comes in and the mother silently gets up and walks out.
Ellen has no idea they despise her, the most chilling part to me besides drowning the brother is when she looks in the mirror and says look at me, I hate the little beast(her child) I wish it would die, that was chilling, she should have won an academy award..👌🌟💗🌹

Vincent Price was also very good in "Laura".
@@jimmylieb5225 yes, Vincent Price was a fine actor I think, I don't know what the general perception of him is, because he was generally associated with B horror movies (which are mostly upheld by his performance).
Ms. Tierney’s opening scene in “Thunderbirds” is a not to be missed few moments of her body of work on film. A true flower in the desert setting.
I haven’t seen this movie in a long time. The casting is phenomenal. Many years ago I read an article in the Chicago Tribune about a woman who devised an intricate plot to frame her ex husband for her death, making it appear as if he had murdered her. He and his defense, by sheer luck, were able to provide a complete timeline of his whereabouts. Even down to his picking up his dry cleaning. She was diabolical.

Great idea.
It was already remade. Loni Anderson starred and though not comparable toTierney, she was actually pretty good.
She's literally the most heartless woman I've ever seen - great film with the beautiful Gene Tierney as the ice cold and heartless obsessive wife - who destroys all who are in her way -
Seriously, another heartless femme Fatale is Linda Fiorentino in "The last seduction, she's the most ruthless of them all...😳... excellent movie!!

You mean that she LITERALLY has no heart!?! I don't think you know what 'literally' means.
@@mr.blackhawk142 My oh my, Mr Blackhawk, I'm sure you understand my meaning, she is a woman who behaves in a manner of someone who is 'heartless' as in devoid of human kindness, compassion, affection for others - or other normal human emotions, not, of course she is without a human heart, obviously.
