I love rooster tail lures, they’ll catch just about anything. In my neck of the woods, I’ve caught largemouth and smallmouth bass, yellow perch, redbreast and pumpkinseed sunfish, and brook trout.
One spring evening in May many moons ago, I caught an 8 lb. 10 oz. largemouth in a north eastern Kansas county lake using a black Rooster Tail. A friend netted it for me despite the influence of many malt beverages. It's a killer on all species in this neck of the woods; the lure, not the beer.
Yep, for some reason the black-bladed rooster tail is a killer! I catch everything on it, sunfish, bass, pickerel, perch, trout, fallfish. Almost anything!!
My 9 yr old son & I wade fished the upper Bourbeuse river here in MO last Saturday and caught so many I lost count. He stopped at 40 just for him. Caught endless sunfish, smallmouth, spots and I lost about a 15-16" after fighting him about 10 seconds . Most fun day of fishing I can remember in a long while! My brother & I grew up using roosters for creek/stream fishing and I swear they catch more than anything else. Maybe not always the biggest, but if you want non stop action, they are hard to beat.
Rooster tails are my #1 lure. Theyll catch anything. 1/16 oz black glitter is my favorite color for panfish/bass while I'm on my kayak in the Ocmulgee river
Caught my first bass today and I was stoked! Funny thing is that I bought all these bass lures and couldn’t catch anything but then I catch one on an old rooster tail that I use for rivers😂
Hello ! I have the 6’6” st.croix triumph spinning rod and the 2500D- XH Dawia tatula Lt spinning reel. Which size and the name of fishing line and the size rooster tail you recommend me to buy to use to catch them fish like you did in this UA-cam video please. Thank you so much 🙏🙏
Cant go wrong with a Rooster Tail, I have a spot where I catch White Bass from late Spring right through the fall, and 95 percent of my casts are made with an 1/8th ounce Rooster Tail, Gets them every time!!
On days where the bass bite is slow,I often tie on a rooster tail with the intent of catching some crappies or bluegills.Seems to never disappoint me.I occasionally will get surprised by a bass or two.Best lure ever to teach youngsters how to catch fish on artificials.
Tbh mepps is way better quality but is way more expensive but I did also catch a 8 lb bass on a white rooster tail soo... there both great lures but I have caught more fish on mepps but bigger on rooster tail.

All my catches this summer was on a ned rig strike king rage craws and yums but I’ll try the rooster tails tomorrow they seem to want smaller lures now
Do you use split shots to get the lures out farther because when I was first learning how to fish I used to put 3 medium sized split shots on depending on how heavy the rooster tail or crank bait was. Now I usually put 1 or 2 especially if I’m fishing the river but I’ve never really asked anyone
@@jupi230 yea the smallest ones and a the bigger ones. I don't have them around to look at the weight at the moment but sounds right. Really they both worked pretty good. Rooster tails are awesome! I have caught soooo many fish them. I do have one of those crazy fishing stories too. My grandpa lived in Tennessee before he passed. So I obviously went there to fish A LOT as a kid growing up. He lived by a golf course that was by Douglas Lake and there was this pond kinda sorta off of the course and was by the lake. So, we fished there too. Other than the fact I caught lots of bass in it.... my mother decided she wanted to go fishing. She grabbed this little poll and put a rooster tail on it. A fish hit it.... a BIG one. She fought that sucker for hours until the fish got tired. She reeled it in and I'm telling ya.... that was THE biggest catfish I have ever seen. If you look at a standard fridge, I would say, in length, it would cover about 70-75% of that fridge. And it was in a pond. Nuts lol
Awesome video and glad to see you fishing with rooster tails. I never fish with them till I try one and was catching fish like you one right after another. I also never fish with beetle spins and my dad gave me one and told me that they catch big fish to well I didnt believe him but tried it and caught my p.b. bass on a green and black one it was a 4 pounder so now I fish with them lol. But I live on a lake and I started my three kids out on them two lures and they got hooked they love to fish and glad I found them baits cause they are great for kids to start out on. But want to say seen you on hook set are free and glad you joined the channel they are a great group of people's in there and so awesome to we all like the same thing and thats fishing just like your channel. Good stuff! Felt like I was there too. I’ve only ever had luck with a rooster tail on a small pond stocked with trout. I’m gonna have to give it a go again. How fast do you reel to keep it from getting hung up?
I’m new to fishing and new to rooster tails - can you explain why you switches from the 1/16th to 1/4th oz rooster tail? Seemed to be equally effective. Great video!
It has a lot to do with the hook size. You can always get deeper with a split weight about 6 inches up on the line. When all else fails use a roostertail.....it works sometimes and they always hit hard.
Hey man, I’m just getting into trout fishing and I picked up a few stuff today. What line are you using ? Also do you use leader line ? I picked up a Trilene XL smooth casting. I’m working with a Stradic 1000 and TFO ultra light rod 6’6 “. Any advise would help!! Thanks in advance. I got a few rooster tails and spoons.
I typically just use 4 pound monofilament without leader line. That setup you got sounds really nice! It should be great for trout fishing. Thanks for watching!
You probably have too stiff of a rod and/or too heavy line. For smaller rooster tails, I would recommend a light or ultra light rod and 4-6 pound line.
How do you cast rooster tails so far. I cannot figure it out. I’m new to fishing and they’re so light they don’t go anywhere. It’s like I’m casting an empty line. Any pointers?
The main thing is that you’ve got to use lighter action rods with a very flimsy tip. This will allow you to fling the lighter rooster tails very far. When casting the rooster tails on a lighter rod you should reel them in a few inches from the rod tip and fling them. You should be able to see this if you look back in the video. It can definitely be tricky at first, but it should be much easier with a lighter rod.
I had 4lb mono on the smaller rod and 6lb fluoro on the bigger rod. I think a braid to fluoro leader would be really good, but braid to mono works also
I like to use a trout colored one and a gold brown one it seems if the water is murky if the spinner on it is brown they bite more if the water is clear the silver spinner is better to use, either way the color of the bait itself hasn't really mattered just the color of the spinner

Going to try rooster tail for the first time tomorrow! As a noob, my luck only with pan fishes using worms. Do I need to cast and reel or just cast and wait with the rooster tail? And is it a good idea to use bobbers with rooster tail?
Growing up for me, when it came to family, was a very good time. I had people who made a concerted effort to make sure my sister and I had fun. I reside in Florida now moving from PA. after graduation, 17 years old. Places to fish in PA were scarce where I was from. The Gulf Coast of Central FL. was a paradise first viewed by a person who had medeocur possibilities back home. Anyway...... 5th & 6th grade our apartment building was across the street from a dairy farm. A small stream ran through the field which the farmer damned up to create 1-2 acre pond. My step Dad went over and asked permission to fish the pond and was given it. Blue gills, large mouth bass, bullfrogs, and an occasional turtle. Had to keep an eye open for the bovines and bovine piles. That's when I was introduced to hollow fiber glass fishing rod, a Mitchell Garcia open-faced spinning reel. Worms, a red and white clip on plastic bobber, snap swivels and lead split shots. The blue gills where okay to catch, but the bass weren't too fond of the worms and bobber set-up. So I got to nosing around in his tackle box and came across a white with black polka-dot rooster tail with a yellow treble feather, silver blade. I think it was less than 5 casts and I had my first large mouth. The cool thing about the rooster tail was the surprisingly slow speed retrieval you could have and still spin that blade. That was fifty years ago. Some of the other lures back then was the hula popper with rubber band skirt with a single treble hook. Other wooden poppers with a single downward turned medium shank hook (all 1 piece) and rubber band whiskers. The Mepps Minow spinner with brass beaded body, a tear drop spinner blade, single treble trailing with black and red feather. The Rapala round bill floating minnow color black over silver clear bill with twin treble hooks. It could be jerked or slow retrieve shallow diving swing bait. Besides plastic worms, last but not least were the red and white stripped Dare Devil spoons, mostly lake baits for Wallies, Pike, small mouth. The last year we went to the Pocono Mountains for vacation I used for fishing the lake a lure they called a sonic lure. It was shaped as a small pan fish with a mid back eyelet to connect your line. No bill, just body shape would cause it to dive sharply and swim/vibrate creating the sound of a fish in distress. Caught yellow perch on that lure. All baits from my youth. Sorry for rambling on, but it's hard to stop talking about fishing. Very nice videos.
What part of the states are you in? ive never had any luck with lures but ive been trying a few different types, just got an 8 pack of these in the mail , gonna give em a try at the spillway tomorrow
I live in Georgia, and I catch fish on lures all the time because I hardly ever use live bait. These rooster tails are a great option that can catch a lot of fish.
Yeahh, I think it kinda just depends where you’re fishing. Both of those ponds have a ton of small bass, so I think they were just hitting it more. Thanks for watching!

I’ve caught my personal best on one it was 8 pounds 9 ounces...
did u catch that 1 fish by the eyeball at 7:00?
Yeah I think so
lol nice xD i hooked a fish from the tail with a rooster tail was a good fight thought i had a monster
I got the same one as u but ive never caught a bass only sunfish
Yeahh, I think it kinda just depends where you’re fishing. Both of those ponds have a ton of small bass, so I think they were just hitting it more. Thanks for watching!
@@AaronsOutdoor1 That gives me confidence
Quick question, what size of rooster tail are you using??
The small one at the beginning was 1/8 oz in the fire tiger color and the larger one at the end was 1/4 oz in the white color
@@AaronsOutdoor1 what size would you recommend if fishing on a lake??do i have to put weights, if so preferrably what size..thanks
Bass are over populated here. Small and skinny. But rooster tails are fish getters.
Is that the Pflueger president?
I used the Shimano Nasci and Sahara in this video (Links in description). Thanks for watching!

Bass membership
There is big roster tails then that.
They bigger bass go other the bigger raster tail.
do them rooster tails cause any line twist? would you use a swivel using these?
I typically don’t get line twists, so I don’t see a need for a swivel
You will caught big bass on raster tails.
