  • When Licence to Kill came out in the summer of 1989, it, unfortunately, marked the end of Timothy Dalton's tenure as James Bond. A significant delay involving behind-the-scenes wheeling and dealing meant a proposed third Dalton film, The Property of a Lady never got off the ground, and when they were finally ready to return to the franchise, he'd moved on. This opened the door for Pierce Brosnan to step in and reclaim the part that was very nearly his in 1987, in what would be his first, iconic turn as James Bond 007 in Goldeneye! On this episode of James Bond Revisited we explore the Goldeneye phenomenon, including the hype that went into its launch and its enduring legacy, including the iconic in its own way N64 game, Goldeneye 007!

James Bond has never looked cooler than in Goldeneye. Brosnan had everything down to a T. The tuxedo, the hair, the swag and not to mention his charisma and humor. Being well built and convincing in fight scenes also helps. When I think of Bond, Goldeneye Brosnan is the first version I think about.

I agree. Especially the opening sequence. Goldeneye is a very cool and slick movie to begin with so i think it worked great for the most part. A traditional orchestral score throughout would have made it less unique. Serra also employed sweeping string sections though, like Natalyas theme.

      @Damien_N 3 роки тому

When I think of the score of this film I think of the really quite dated music used to score the car chase on the road into Monaco.
I think I get what he was going for, with a sleek and smooth, almost Nile Rodgers guitar type sound used for the lead synthesiser sound. Unfortunately the development of the sound just wasn’t there in my opinion.

THIS was the Bond that got me hooked. I was 11 when this came out and it was EVERYWHERE. Its the first film I've seen more than once in the cinema. I loved it. I loved the novelisation, I loved the soundtrack, I loved the VHS, I loved the amazing game and by god I loved Famke Jannsen! 😂 This film ignited my curiosity about so many things. Especially history. I actually had the Internet, in Ireland, in early 1996 and through that 56k.modem I looked up stuff I didn't know about. What was EMP? What was the KGB? what is the Tiger Eurocopter? A relic of the cold War? Well let me see about the closing days of the Cold War. If I couldn't find it on Web 1.0, then I could find a book in library to tell me about it.
I just LOVED this film. It was fresh, exciting, sexy, interesting, memorable and just shot beautifully.
I loved that Pierce was Irish too!
I got this on VHS and then it Was an early dvd purchase for me. Definitely Famke was the best Bond Girl until Eva Green took the crown for ever.
I was excited for TND and while let down a bit it was still a classic Bond film if a bit understated.
It was just the right balance of gritty and crazy I think. The amazing prologue against the mental tank chase?? But it WORKS!
Pierce is a wonderful Bond in this. Rough, ruthless but also charismatic and witty. He has the right balance.
Basing M on Stella Maxwell who became head of MI5 was genius and it really broke up the dusty old wood panelled office and weathered civil servant with an upcoming knighthood giving orders...great casting.
While TND was gearing up the INCREDIBLE Goldeneye was just an experience in 1997 and something very special.
As I have said many times on comments to me the video game Everything Or Nothing, to me, is Pierces final outing as Bond. NOT DAD... If it was a movie it would be up there with Goldeneye.
Having a former agent be the nemesis was done brilliantly,, but... if i had one gripe it is that it dooesnnt have enough scenes of Alec outsmarting James or playing him at his own game etc. It lacks some beats where we see how difficult a foe he will be because he is trained the same as James.
Maybe Skyfall and Silva did it better, that's a debate in its own but still... I loved this in 95 annd it has aged remarkably well. Top film.

Where TWINE wins points for me is the villain Elektra. I wanted more from the other one, especially since his set up was more akin to a classic Bond villain but Elektra singlehandedly picked up the pieces and became something unique. One thing I hated about TND was the villain; seriously Darth Sidious is more likeable than him.

It actually has a lot in common with Skyfall (M in danger because of her past mistakes, a deeply personal conflict for Bond) and Brosnan pulls off those elements beautifully. But the makers weren't confident enough at that point to let a Bond movie rest on that, so we got Christmas Jones for the sake of having an "Oh, James" type ending. (You'll notice that Daniel Craig's first three movies did NOT have "Oh, James" endings.) I grew up with this film and it was the first bond film I ever watched. GoldenEye is a top 10 bond film and a personal favourite of mine. What a great action film for the 90s. Easily a very memorable action film for the 90s. It's up there with T2 and The Fugitive. Brosnan was so perfect for this role and glad he did because he's one of most memorable action stars in the last 30 years. GoldenEye is a 10/10 film.

Yeah, I've always thought that Tomorrow Never Dies tends to be underrated. I'm not sure I'd say it's better than Goldeneye, but it's a fully worthy successor. Plus, it brought David Arnold into the series - easily the best Bond composer after John Barry.

Been waiting on this review.... Goldeneye will always be THE Bond film for me. Yeah, I'd seen all the previous films via the old TBS Bond-a-Thons, but this was the very first one I saw in theater. Brosnon was on point in this film, and yeah the villains were probably the best since the SPECTRE days during Connery's time in the tux. Sean Bean (he who dies in 95% of his films) was great, and let's face it. Famke Jansen stole the show. Personally the best aspect of Goldeneye is not only was it the first Bond film I saw in theater, but I've seen ever Bond flick in theater with my father since this one. Its a marvelous tradition that I'm very grateful to have.

I always felt Brosnan was a more youthful bond even more so after the darker and more grizzled portrayal by daulton. I see Sean Bean playing something in between Moore and Daulton, a seasoned veteran but not to the point of being burnt out.

I always thought the same thing, bring back old bonds as villains. They really don't seem interested at all though. I remember at one point Roger Moore was pitching a movie with ALL of them, even saying he and Sean would need stunt doubles for anything other than walking through a doorway.

It's difficult to articulate just how dead the Bond franchise was in 1995. It was everything or nothing with _Goldeneye._ No one knew if or how it _could_ come back, connect & be relevant. But _GE_ is damn near perfection. Broz is on point (his unbothered gunfire flinch is an inspired Bond characterization), Dench was a masterstroke, the Cold War thriller vibe plays, & the film introduces a few brutal, proto-Jason Bourne fights.
After a decade of it, Brosnan proved that fancasting - sometimes - *works.*

Goldeneye was the first Bond film I saw at the cinema, my Dad took me along as a 12 year old boy and I was instantly hooked. Brosnan is kinda 'my Bond' for that reason but I also thought he was a great 007 let down by some (later) mediocre films - such a shame

I remember the impact of this film so well. At the time I was a music student and I went to see it at the big odeon in Glasgow city centre with a gang of my friends. Everyone in the cinema went mental after that opening sequence and cheered at the end of the film. The theme song is awesome, but you're right about the score. Eric Serra has composed some great soundtracks but his style just didn't suit bond. I didn't realise the tank chase has been re-scored, but it makes sense as it is the only bond sounding part of the entire score! That one element is the only slight letdown for me. I rewatched the film recently and I still love it so much. I'm looking forward to your next review 😁

I really enjoy these videos! Review is dead-on- Brosnan is easily at his best in this film, and the Bond films wouldn’t make the effort to get everything right again until Casino Royale. Good as Brosnan is, though, I think Martin Campbell is the MVP- he gets pitch-perfect performances out of everyone, and I think I’d see Dalton differently if he got to say this movie’s dialogue with this movie’s director. I remember Brosnan describing Campbell as constantly riding him to be “cooler.” That explains, for instance, why he’s so entertainingly aloof in this film’s action scenes while he’s constantly grinding his teeth and ad-libbing grunts in the subsequent films- Brosnan didn’t always have the best “Bond” instincts and he deserved more direction to get everything right. I also blame the producers for wanting Brosnan to gain weight for subsequent Bond films. He may have looked unimposing to older fans but he had a brains-over-braun, Jason Bourne thing working for him in “Goldeneye.”
