I seen this in the cinema and absolutely loved it. It's an amazing James Bond film. I watched it for the first time on Blu-ray the other night and was so entertained. It rocks on that format and blew me away. Especially if you have a surround sound home cineam kit. Which I cranked up to almost max. I have to give props to Izabella Scorupco as she is drop dead gorgeous and doesn't get enough mentions when it comes to beautiful Bond girls. Personally I think she is one of the most beautiful woman I have ever seen. And I still have the same crush on her as when I first seen at 15 in 1995. This is one of those films you don't sell to CEX. It's just too good.
Rewatched it recently, it was great. I still remember seeing it at the theater, and it was for sure the best time I had seeing a Bond movie on the big screen.
Quick fun story... Wanted to watch Goldeneye when it first came out, but I was too young (not by much, a few months...) Fast forward a few years, and it's now '97. I go and eat Scampi and Chips in our local hotel down the road in the evening, while family is visiting to celebrate. I'm sitting down, can see the TV on, and low and behold, Goldeneye is being shown on TV a few moments later. Those Scampi and Chips never tasted so good. An hour later, a part of the family decide to walk back home first. It's me, my older brother and my younger sister. Out of nowhere (and bearing in mind, this was during the winter months, heading towards Christmas, so it was dark with a few stars...) what looks like a plane in the distance, is heading towards Earth in the sky, around due North. Turns out is was a weird shooting star. Now, I have seen a few shooting stars in my time, but this must have come in at a sharper than usual trajectory, because it was wriggling slightly as it made it's decent, lasted a good 10 seconds, than fizzled out. I thought at first it was a plane crashing, but it was definitely a shooting star... What a weird, but wonderful night... and it all started with Goldeneye ;-)
This is my personal favorite Bond movie and top of all time. Just so good. For 3 years this movie came on tv every halloween night. Id trick or treat, then run home just to watch it and eat my candy.
Golden Eye was the first Bond film I watched when it was new and I had the N64 game. There is never going to be a time that driving an actual tank through the streets without using CGI isn't the most epic thing a film maker can put on screen. Watching it as an adult, I've come to realise that Alec had the measure of Bond; even the fight was going against Bond right up until the last moment. Guess I know what I'll be watching later.
Our family was waiting for years to see Pierce (Remington Steele) Brosnan get what he truly deserved. To become 007. The last of the suave and top notch class act Bonds.
Goldeneye and Casino Royale are my favorite Bond films. I didn't know it was the same director until you pointed it out Drinker, and it makes so much sense, because I was also a fan of the Zorro films also directed by Campbell.
Thanks for all your hard work on this channel, CD. While I get precious little time to read these days, I've nevertheless plopped down the princely NZD$12.04 at Amazon and downloaded the Kindle version of your first book. I was pleased to read in your bio that a movie is in the works for your first book (?), perhaps even as a Jason Bourne / Jack Ryan-like series. Nice. Anyway, keep up the good work - I'm looking forward to having a read of "Redemption" as time allows. Oh, and yes, Golden Eye was an excellent flick when it came out - the jump off the dam and the free-fall chase of the plane off the cliff (ridiculous as that was, ha ha), along with the tank rampage - all great, Bond stuff. Still one of my fave Bond movies.
Ahhh, Xenia Onatopp brings back good memories and good times LOL! Definitely a fun movie to watch even for a non-Bond fan such as myself. Question for his lordship the Critical Drinker... Would you give moves like "Strange Days" and "Gattaca" the once over like you did "Dark City" (thanks for that by the way!)?
Definitely a modern classic, one of my favorites even among the Connery films 4:36 Its also bewildering to think that back in the 90's alot of people thought that Brosnan was a wimp or not an athletic enough bond. Even the Simpsons said such, yet the ending fight scene was one of the best of the series, even to this day. Definitely more brutal than any 60's or 70's Bond fight scene.
I'll chime in and say the "Drinker" is becoming one of my favorite 'tubers-after suffering through "No Time To Die" I came across the review of "The Spy Who Loved Me" and decided to give it a try after 40 some years. Surprise ! I found myself enjoying it immensely as it was perfectly suited for the times. And kudos for doing a review of "Goldeneye"-one of the best.
When GoldenEye came out I was about 9-10 years old. I have watched and liked some Bond movies before this, I even had toy Bond cars, but GoldenEye made me a Bond fan. I only saw it in 1997 on pay TV, and the video game sure helped a lot too (which I was downright addicted to). Unfortunately no other Brosnan Bond movie came close to the greatness of his first outting, though.
My Bond is the first Bond I watched, Roger Moore in For Your Eyes Only. He's my favorite and I acknowledge Connery as the best. But damn, when you think of what Bond looks like, you think of a tall, athletic, handsome, charming dude. You think of Pierce Brosnan. GoldenEye is one of the best Bond movies. The best one since The Spy Who Loved Me...and well, no Bond movie has been as good since. Casino Royale could've been great with a different actor. They would've had to make some changes to the script, but Pierce in Casino Royale would have been perfect.
I was slightly surprised to learn when I became reinvested in Bond that, in the Bond fandom, every movie was atleast _someone's_ favorite. I now (kind of) like the entire chronology in the official EON series. Though my favorite Bond is now Moore...GoldenEye is (not just favorite _Bond_ movie) my favorite movie ever. Long live Brosnan! ❤
I gotta say it. Goldeneye is the best Bond film of all time. They wasted Pierce Brosnon with the next 3 films. Goldeneye was basically impossible to follow.
I met Pierce Brosnan at the bottom of the grand canyon. He had rode the mules down and was going to float the river. Everyone was trying to snap pictures of him when he wasn't looking. He approached us and asked what we were doing and who we were with. He was pretty friendly, and complained about our teacher leaving me and my two friends (we were 17) alone to go up a different trail.
I also went back and watched Goldeneye after watching No Time to Die. So much better and Sean Connery is the definitive Bond, but Pierce Brosnan was also great. I tend to watch his Bond movies the most because I grew up with them.
Goldeneye exceptional film, and my favorite of Brosnan Bond!. Of all the pastiche Authors after Fleming ,John Gardner wrote the books for ''Living Daylights'' & License to Kill '' with ''Goldeneye''.I believe they were made into quality films ,shame Dalton didn't get that third film? Craig ? I'm with you on his craggy acting.
I didn't appreciate how good this movie was at the time because being so young and unfamiliar with the Bond movies, it set the standard for me, which is probably also why Brosnan is my favorite Bond. Now that I'm older, it's clear that it's a standout in the franchise. I was very confused as to why they casted Craig for Bond by comparison.
Not even going to mention the N64 game? Goldeneye is, for me, definitive Bond. It has EVERYTHING the franchise is known for and does it all competently. Brosnan steps right in and within seconds he's got the charm, the class, and the action.
Watched it again a few months back too. I noticed that there was a lot more to Natalia than originally met the eye. Evasion techniques. Survival skills. Computer skills. Weapons training. Knowledge of Russian radar capabilities. Probably a few more that I can't remember offhand. Whatever agency she worked for, you can bet that it wasn't the "Ministry of Transportation."
Pierce was such a suave Bond. Definitely someone you would envision in the role, plus he actually loved the role and the fans, and doesn’t dump on it now. He really wanted to continue on as Bond but was let down with scripts. I still enjoy Tomorrow Never Dies, TWINE and Die Another Day more than the boring Daniel Craig movies.
The differences between generations of Bond are so vast I can't say for sure that Goldeneye is the best film of the franchise.... but its the best film of the franchise.
Yeah the difference from Dalton to Brosnan to Craig was vast...Dalton and (early) Brosnan were excellent with outstanding Bond films and Craig was an ill-fitting try-hard with miserable, boring and even pretentious movies after Casino Royale. Even Casino Royale was spoiled a lot with bloated and unnecessary action scenes shoe-horned in and a ton of cheeseball gumpf surrounding the explanations of playing poker...oh and that You Know My Name song was atrocious.
After the starting scene of GOLDENEYE the audience applauded* ... in a German cinema! *as far as I could interpret it they/we didn't applaud out of respect, but due the mindblowing brazenness of that scene
I do love Goldeneye, it's one of my favorite Bond movies, and of course can't ignore the impact the game had on my childhood. So many long nights in front of the tiny CRT TV with split screen, barely able to see what we are doin'! I will say though, I don't hate Craig as Bond, Casino Royale in particular is one of my favorite. But, I do think that was the best of the Craig era, they slowly got worse as time went on, but I don't really think that's Craig's fault.
Goldeneye is the best Bond movie in my opinion. The Game being so good just adds to it's Status. He's my favorite Bond, he played the Character well regardless of movie quality.
I always thought Pierce was the best Bond because I always felt like he looked the most like what Bond should look like. Even to this day, when I think of James Bond I immediately think of Pierce Brosnan's face.
Alec: "I set the timer for 6 minutes. The same 6 minutes you gave me."

I totally agree. Connery is the Bond (so far)-but Brosnan is the guy. I love him as an actor and have mad respect for him with how he handled the death of his first wife and the criticism of his second wife's weight.
Brosnan was my favorite
Goldeneye was the first DVD I owned. I played it on my dad's Compaq laptop from work, and I can still hear the MGM DVD intro and picture those awesome intro menus. As an 11 or 12-year-old, I was in awe.
This was an instant classic and will always be my nostalgia Bond movie. Also, who can forget the video game? Still one of the best first person shooters ever made.
Automatic weapons in The Facility, hours of fun.
The game may have aged quite a lot, but the music is still powerful and sets the mood perfectly.
Drinker I find your reviewers so accurate that I'm not entirely sure that you are not a figment of my subconscious. You are able to express things I have always felt about films but have never been able to articulate. You are without doubt the best reviewer in any format ever.
My favorite bond film. Pity Brosnan didn't get the best scripts after this. He was quality.
I thought Tomorrow Never Dies was a great follow up. But I agree completely about The World is Not Enough and Die Another Day.
Oh yes to every single syllable uttered here! As usual, a layered, intelligent response and fun analysis with more depth than first strikes the ear. Please don't ever go away, dear Drinker.
Dude... I'd let her fart in my coffin before they close the lid. What a woman.
I prefer the evil one she's seen some shit much more my type.
@@Sophiechic she always liked a good squeeze.
Rewatched it recently, it was great. I still remember seeing it at the theater, and it was for sure the best time I had seeing a Bond movie on the big screen.
Quick fun story...
Wanted to watch Goldeneye when it first came out, but I was too young (not by much, a few months...)
Fast forward a few years, and it's now '97.
Drinker, you are a dapper no nonsense godsend among critics, and we all thank you for that.
Sincerely,
A fan among fans
I agree. I enjoyed Craig's first bond, then it was downhill from there. I'm blowing thru all the old bond movies now. Super fun.
That Mr Personality bit is a masterclass stroke of genius
Brosnan was my favourite Bond growing up as a 90s kid and still is now.
One of the best Bond movies ever!
Golden Eye and Tomorrow Never Dies are my favourite Bonds, absolute Bangers
“Set your martinis to ‘shaken AND stirred’ because the drinker is going all in on this” priceless!😆😂
Definitely a modern classic, one of my favorites even among the Connery films
4:36 Its also bewildering to think that back in the 90's alot of people thought that Brosnan was a wimp or not an athletic enough bond. Even the Simpsons said such, yet the ending fight scene was one of the best of the series, even to this day. Definitely more brutal than any 60's or 70's Bond fight scene.
I’m a 90s kid and this is undoubtedly my favourite bond movie ever.
I'll chime in and say the "Drinker" is becoming one of my favorite 'tubers-after suffering through "No Time To Die" I came across
the review of "The Spy Who Loved Me" and decided to give it a try after 40 some years. Surprise ! I found myself enjoying
it immensely as it was perfectly suited for the times. And kudos for doing a review of "Goldeneye"-one of the best.
Golden Eye is my favorite bond movie.. perfect mix of fun action and sophistication including the title song:)
This is my generations bond, and will always be the man, the myth and legend
What's so good about GoldenEye is that every villain has their own agenda in place, but rely on each other to get those needs
Ah yes, Goldeneye... Top 3 Bond Film of *ALL TIME* imo
Best Hero/Antagonist Bond dynamic
Also: *"Give me the Code Natalia"* never gets old! 😅
Love this guy’s humor when it comes to movies 🎥!
Iconic movie and one the most iconic games ever played🤘😎
Fantastic Bond film! Martin Campbell is the best Bond director!
The first movies to feature each new Bond actor are all very good.
Hands down my favorite film!
I loved GoldenEye so much, especially loved the N64 game of it even more
I was slightly surprised to learn when I became reinvested in Bond that, in the Bond fandom, every movie was atleast _someone's_ favorite.
I now (kind of) like the entire chronology in the official EON series. Though my favorite Bond is now Moore...GoldenEye is (not just favorite _Bond_ movie) my favorite movie ever. Long live Brosnan! ❤
Watching Godeneye in theaters was the first Bond film I actually saw. Was a great day for my 8 year old self
I gotta say it. Goldeneye is the best Bond film of all time. They wasted Pierce Brosnon with the next 3 films. Goldeneye was basically impossible to follow.
Golden Eye will always be my favorite 007 movie.
Your review was right on the mark ! I love the James Bond movie's but Goldeneye is a special one to me in so many ways
This was the first movie I ever saw in the cinema, it might actually be the reason I love movies so much (good ones that is).
This was my first Bond films and it was awesome.
Goldeneye was the last Bond movie that actually felt like a Bond movie.
True. His follow ups just felt more like run-of-the-mill action movies
@@venturatheace1 I disagree, Brosnan was pure Bond, if you want to watch a movie without Bond then watch Daniel Craig
Goldeneye was a once in a generation Bond film. "I gave him the limp"
My favorite Bond film. Everything about it is a giant win and is pure Bond.
Best BOND movie…EVEEEEER! And it spawned a N64 game that I must have played hundreds of hours on. Literally.
Goldeneye on N64 revolutionized gaming forever!!! Love me some Goldeneye
Not even going to mention the N64 game? Goldeneye is, for me, definitive Bond. It has EVERYTHING the franchise is known for and does it all competently. Brosnan steps right in and within seconds he's got the charm, the class, and the action.
Also an amazing cast this one has.
Nice one! Goldeneye is my top Bond movie and you did a great job reviewing it and showing why it is such a top Bond film!
Awesome analysis! Totally agree!
Gotta go back and watch them all
Excellent breakdown of what made it so great. Some little things I'd missed before too.
One of the best Bond movies ever. Brosnan's debut was awesome
A post that mirrors my feelings about Brosnan and Craig. Brosnan was the perfect cinematic Bond and Craig was just dire.
For my whisky, Brosnan is the most complete Bond. It's just a shame that he only got 1.5 good scripts to work with.
I loved the computer game. The airplane stunt though was ridiculous.
Goldeneye is the best Bond movie in my opinion. The Game being so good just adds to it's Status. He's my favorite Bond, he played the Character well regardless of movie quality.
Geez, haven't seen this one in so many years. Crazy how young Judi Dench was.
Goldeneye N64 got Me into the James Bond Film's and is My favorite Bond Film followed by License To Kill and Goldfinger.
GoldenEye will always be the best for me because it's the first one I've ever watched lol. I also must have put a thousand hours into the N64 game.
I always thought Pierce was the best Bond because I always felt like he looked the most like what Bond should look like. Even to this day, when I think of James Bond I immediately think of Pierce Brosnan's face.
Oh drinker, I guess we needed a 5th Brosnan film for him to take the top spot aye? Great review as always!
lol
