THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH (1999) Pierce Brosnan - James Bond Revisited
Вставка
- Опубліковано 28 вер 2024
- Despite opening on the same day as TITANIC, Pierce Brosnan's second outing as James Bond 007, TOMORROW NEVER DIES, was a big box office hit. A third Brosnan Bond, THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH, was put immediately into production, resulting in yet another controversial instalment that has its defenders and critics. A more serious Bond outing, this one has a female villain (Sophie Marceau's Electra King), Denise Richards as the Bond girl, and Robert Carlyle, and while fans generally consider it a cut above what was to come (DIE ANOTHER DAY), its reputation has been sullied in recent years. Check out this latest instalment of James Bond Revisited and unpack THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH!

#JamesBondRevisited #TheWorldIsNotEnough #NoTimeToDie
I was sad when the Q actor died days after this movie came out. He was do charming.
When I heard Desmond Llewelyn had died I remember thinking, well he was old. Then it turned out he died in a car crash. I remember the newspapers suggesting that he liked gadgets and fast cars, which was why he crashed, but it was complete garbage. It was just unfortunate.
Edit: He died a few months after the film came out, driving to a book signing.
The best of the best!
VERONA (VERONA) It was before the press thing
Yeah, and tragically ironic that the guy who’s fame was based upon being the guy who supplied Bond with his awesome cars that he would proceed to smash up, always to Q’s vocal chagrine, he then died in a car crash . . . No one would have seen that coming, and it was like he was robbed of his retirement. All of the fascinating interviews we would have gotten from him, lost to us, is one thing. But his opportunity to bask in the glory of his success was stolen from him, his family and his many, many fans. A terrible tragedy. ✌️👍
@@garrick3727 : Great comment 👍
Sophie Marceau might be the most beautiful Bond girl of the entire Brosnan era
Nothing against Denise Richards, but I would go with Marceau any day
Monica Bellucci ftw
Halle Berry was gorgeous too
The accent doesn't hurt, either.
@@leeweesquee Bro the Topic is About Brosnan Era😂...NOT the Craig Era
In the theater, during the double entendre, everyone went "Ahhhhhhh' at the corny-ness of that line. It was fun at the time
Sophie Marceau made a whole generation fall in love...
She still looks pretty good.

One of my favourite Bonds. 9/10.
Your videos on James Bond have been one of the highlights of the last few months. 10/10
Thank you so much - that means a lot
I always liked The World Is Not Enough and I still do. I think it is a good movie and Brosnan's second best after GoldenEye. Everyone is entitled to have their own opinion of course but I don't think the movie is even nearly as bad as this review claims...
I was about to turn 14 when I saw this one in the cinema and I really liked it. Denise Richards while maybe not anything major in her acting was something a young guy like me really enjoyed to see in large cinema :D Also while a bit silly it was still entertaining to see Robbie Coltrane returning as Valentin Zukovsky!
The same exact thing happened to me that I watched it over and over too many times and the more I watched it the more apparent the flaws were. I honestly don't know why I kept watching it just to critique it the more I did but I loved James Bond that much
Many points and issues with the film aside, specifically in regards to Renard the biggest issue for me is that they gave him a great setup, perfectly fitting of a memorable Bond villain, but did nothing with it. His 'superhuman' resistance plays absolutely no role at all in the final fight or any confrontation whatsoever, making him no different than any regular villain or thug before.
This movie had 2 villains who both died 15 minutes apart from each other.
At least, octopussy, living daylights, FRWL villains died some time apart
Yeah i mean, he holds a hot rock for a few seconds and that's about it
“First never let them see you bleed and Always have an escape route” Q
I live by these words to this day
1. Most underrated and underappreciated film in the series. 2. Octopussy was Q/Desmond's finest hour. 3. There should be a coffee table photobook of Bond actors goofing off behind the scenes.
I think this movie is criminally underrated. Yes Denise Richards was miscast but at least she was great to look at. The villains, the story, the score, the music was all top notch Bond stuff
10:00 definitely the best Bond music video ever
Something most people folks may not know, at Pinewood Studios in the garden near the moat, there is a nice modest memorial for Q. When i discovered that one day on my lunch break. I thought it really classy the Pinewood had that there for such a veteran of film.
Thank you for mentioning Brosnan’s ticks. He was my favorite Bond, but instincts are not always the best and from TND on he is allowed to use them. Seems like no one bothered to direct him during physical scenes.
Today at work i was thinking about this videothe whole day and when it would be on UA-cam..and lo and behold, here it is💕
Ohhhh yeaaaa buddy. Mondays are the best day of the week now cause of these!
My second favorite Bond film. Highly underrated.
That line when Q leaves always sticks with me. I failed the first part, but I'll always aspire to the 2nd. Thank you all involved with TWINE for that.
I still think The World Is Not Enough is better than Quantum of Solace, Spectre and No Time To Die. And I prefer Brosnan to Craig, although Craig benefitted from Casino Royale and Skyfall being very good Bond films.
I got to write a review of this movie for the newspaper I was working for at the time. The headline: New Bond Leaves Reviewer Shaken, Not Stirred.
I really like these reviews, already waiting for the next one. Dalton is my absolute favourite as Bond. He has it all. Wish he could have had his third one but I'm happy to have at least two great outings. Brosnan had only one, the first one. Greetings from Finland!
This was my first Bond film ever so I hold it in a high regard. I always thought it was underrated. I found Brosnan's performance in this to be one of the best. Sophie as Electra was good too. Its intresting seeing the main villan as a woman. When I first saw it I thought Renard was the villan but on subsequent viewings it seems undeniable to me that Electra is. Kinda like how Carver is the main villain in TND despite not bring apart of the last fight.
Robert Carlyle says on an interview that him and Electra were both villains.
She couldn'thave pulled of her Plan without him so that at least makes him a villain not a disposable henchman.
There can be 2 villains like in living daylights and octopussy . . . Also, Rosa klebb and Irma bunt are sorta bond villains (If blofeld wasn't in the movie)
It’s a pity that they didn’t have more scenes with the BMW cause boy is that car cool
There are some things to keep in mind about Bond movies (and all movies in general):
First, the stated production budget ($135 million for TWINE) is what the studio will admit to. The actual production budget might be higher, particularly if there re-shoots.
Second, the marketing and distribution budgets are not included within the production budget. The more money that is used to make a movie, the more money that needs to be used to market and distribute the movie so that the studio has a better chance of making money at the box office.
Third, the studio does not get to keep the entire box office ($361 million for TWINE). The theaters take a cut of that money as does the various territories in which they reside (via taxes).
Typically, a movie has to make 2 to 3 times its production budget in order to be financially successful, depending on how much money is spent to market and distribute the movie.
The box office for TWINE just barely misses the 300% of production budget mark, so it might have been financially successful depending on what was spent to market and distribute the movie.
this movie is waaaaaay better than tomorrow never dies. I would say, almost as good as goldeneye. If you had to watch it so many times, there is no way you could like it at this point. It's a shame. BTW, bad guys didn't cut off elektra. She did.
Ironically for me, The Thomas Crown Affair was a better Bond film than his actual Bond films.
Hell...i think The Thomas Crown Affair remake was better than the original...especially the ending.
@@falconuruguay4588 As much as I admire and love the original, am inclined to agree with you.
James Bond films remind me of the comics industry. In the beginning, comics were an offspin of pulp novels with characters like Domino Lady and Doc Savage, even being printed on the same cheap, pulp paper (which gave pulp its name). The paper was so inferior that they were well aware it would crumble to dust within a few years, so comics were originally pure escapism, made without regard for things like continuity or realism. This gave the creators free reign to create sheer craziness, and produced the distinctive weirdness of the Golden and Silver Ages of comics. It's when comics became successful and started worrying about their long-term viability in the 90s, that's when all the fun went out of them and the industry nearly died.
James Bond started the same way. The films were a cash grab, made to be fast and profitable with little regard for longevity or cinematic legacy. They were joyfully and breathlessly squalid, and that was a large part of their appeal. The reason this film marks the turning point for Bond in terms of overall quality is the same 90s curse which afflicted comics. "Realism" was taken to mean overly-serious grimdark self-consciousness, and in Bond that was the kiss of death. The modern interpretation with Daniel Craig might be watchable, but it's _not_ Bond -- as becomes very apparent when the last couple of films tried to shoehorn Bond material into them with disastrous results.
i for one cannot wait for die another day
This might be the last VHS tape I bought, I had bought all the other Bonds in the set that had come out around that time. The tape started with a Tomorrow Never Dies video game trailer and then critically a tribute to Desmond Llewelyn as 'Q' set to 'Nobody does it Better'. ... The next Bond I would buy was Casino Royale on dvd which speaks to the dumpster fire coming up next.
The boat chase was better then the rest of the movie but I also liked the Helicopter attack.
I enjoyed this one overall. The female villain was a big part of it but I also like Brosnan as Bond in general. I agree that the male villain doesn't get to do much and is kinda forgettable. As to Denise Richards' character, I think by that point I had learned to tolerate the cheesiness of the Bond movies (I watched them all in chronological order) so I didn't mind her. Some of the one-liners were kinda cringey but I'd lie if I say I didn't at least chuckle 😅 This is my second favorite Brosnan Bond film after GoldenEye.
I, as usual, agree with every word of this retrospective. However, World is not Enough is my guilty Bond Pleasure. I love this film, for all its faults, love it.
One of the best Bond movies.
meh, as much as i love Brosnan and bond in general. this is a line that noone has ever really applied to this film. Goldeneye was his best. in the long list of rated Bond...this is nowhere near the top. middle pack to be sure
@@sterlingarcher857 I just did. This got me into Bond so I consider it one of the best.
@@Young_BZ hahaha. yep. ok cool.
@@sterlingarcher857 Yup
See the difference though...? " one of the best" and "i consider it one of the best" thats like me saying my beat up old ford escort i first had is always the best and better than my mercedes because its what got me in to owning cars. Hey im glad you love it. Im sure we are here because we ALL love Bond.
I've always thought that TWINE might have worked better had Sophie Marceau been the Nuclear Physicist and the Boat Chase woman been Elektra King. One of the truly odd moments of the film occurs in the boat chase, when some traffic wardens are surprised by 007's boat grinding along the road at one point. What's odd, is that the traffic warden who gets to do the close-up, was an actual traffic warden, having featured in the BBC's documentary series 'The Clampers' around the same time, and I just can't figure out how that happened. The traffic warden guy was a former holiday camp entertainer, which has long been a stepping stone for many British showbiz figures - so presumably he had an Equity card. But how was he cast? Was someone at EON a fan of obscure cheap reality television? Did the casting director know of him? It's a bizarre moment.
I loved this one. Absolutely brilliant pre credit sequence. Great ski stuff. Yes, I know she is a weak Bond girl but this one is top notch
8:25 the "guerning"
It's strange but I didn't like this movies or Tomorrow Never Dies when I saw them in the theatre. But after several years, I've come to appreciate them both. The World is Not Enough has a lot of really good elements: the opening boat chase, a solid plot, Sophie Marceau playing Bond as both victim and villain, M becoming integral to the plot (a first for the franchise and foreshadowing the subplot of Skyfall...), and it boasts one of my all time favorite Bond songs. Hell, I'll even forgive the presence of Denise Richards because she didn't take herself too seriously and I liked her Starship Troopers.
Except for "Tomorrow Never Does," I loved all of the Brosnan films. The World Is Not Enough is so good, even with Denise Richards in it.
Michael Apted.
Has only disappointed me once: Enough. Which was years after this.
When I heard he was the director I knew this was going to be something special and I was right. Aside from the '60s throwback of the "barely clad and barely acting Bond Girl", this movie was a cut above most of what went before.
The choices of Campbell and Apted showed Wilson and Broccoli were chasing serious quality as well as box office.
Also: Take me round the world one more time, James.
9:57 really the better theme song of all James Bond movies?! Really....
I DON’T THINK SO!
I think this is a bit harsh lol this was a good movie I watched it right before watching the review here and it was still enjoyable, really like the song too at the intro
Desmond's character added continuation through 3 different Bonds
Denise Richards in that sinking sub, nice!🧐
I thought Christmas only came once a year
I actually very much like this one. My only real problem with it is the horrendous acting on Dr. Jones, but that's not enough to doom it for me. I still love this movie. To me, it's the second best Brosnan film, after Goldeneye.
People always say they don't buy Richards as a nuclear physicist, but never explain why. Is it cause she's good looking?
Because she wasnt convincing as one. She kinda acts like a porn actress pretending to be a nuclear physicist. nothing to do with be beautiful...
@@cassandramcbride7007 Ah. It's been years since I saw the film
Ugh you wounded me with this video. One of my favorite Bonds(best bond theme imo). Good action, and a plot that felt just elevated enough to give it extra punch. The N64 game was pretty good too, you could tell Rare used what they learned from Perfect Dark
the only thing I remember from that movie is "dr christmas jones" lol
It's Awesome👏🏻!
I remember going to see a View To a Kill as a child.. Great film.
@@verona8144 So, the producer of this video is talking about rewatching old Bond films and which were good and bad (Moonraker). I state I liked A View to a Kill, and you say that's out of context, and it's beyond you? Lol, wot.
Way better than Tomorrow Never Dies.
I honestly think this is a solid Bond flick. Not as good as GoldenEye, but each time I've watched The World is Not Enough. I've enjoyed it, I don't think Denise Richard's did a terrible job of playing Dr Christmas Jones, I think her screen time was just enough for me not to hate her
4 for richards? That's higher than I expected. 4 is not "really bad".
Yeah, fuck it, this is my favorite Bond. Period.
Are you sure about Desmond, I'm pretty sure this was supposed to be his last film. Why would he retire in this and then still be planed to turn up in the next film.
I remember that he said at the time he would be willing to do it again, but at his age there was a decent chance he wouldn't be able to.
I still enjoy it. It’s not the best but I don’t think it’s close to being a least favorite. I feel it’s looked on worse today because Die Another Day came after and that ended the Brosnan films. It’s like how Batman Forever was just meh when it came out but now pretty much hated because of Batman and Robin came after and everyone just hated the Schumacher films after that. Or more recently GoT season 7 which yeah wasn’t that great but wasn’t considered the dumpster fire that it is till after season 8.
I disagree with everything you said but I will still give this video a thumbs up
I always enjoye The World is Not Enough. Sure Denise Richards didn't play a plausible nuclear scientist, but you could argue that Barbara Bach didn't make a convincing spy
funny you mention that. I'm going to get a lot of hate for this but I think TWINE is terribly underrated and TSWLM is grossly.....terribly.....criminally overrated.
@@crodo123 I wouldn’t say overrated, but it definitely isn’t the masterpiece some people think. The same for TWINE. An enjoyable yet unremarkable watch
Barbara Bach's acting is somewhat wooden in TSWLM, but she was definitely more convincing as a spy than Denise Richards's portrail of a nuclear scientist in TWINE imho.
@@mrlaidback83 Acting isn't a priority for a Bond girl. There is a reason that very few of them had any subsequent acting carrers
@@filippos13 Understood, but I still think Barbara Bach portrail of her character was better than Denise's
There are actually some great fun action scenes in this movie.
Daniel Craig's NOT James Bond! The Daniel Craig movies got it absolutely WRONG!
Am I crazy? I could have swore I'd already seen this video.
Look all things considered, Pierce Brosnan honestly gave three back to back to back great performances as James Bond. I’ll die on that hill for sure.
in fairness is not about the bond actor. I don't think anyone can point at a bond actor and say a movie sucks because of him. It's about the whole package. I liked this one a lot actually. Much much more than tomorrow never dies which I think is pretty awful.
I’m surprised so many people do not like Tomorrow Never Dies, I think the story holds up more than people really think. I also think Martin Campbell should of directed it.
@@crodo123 I don't put Lazenby under that quote. He's really bad.
@@nitehunter91 well lazenby sucks but the movie is amazing. the statement still stands.

With ‘Nobody does it better’ played in the background
I get chills every time even as a kid
Yes it was I had the laserdisc.
I remember that so well. It’s really awesome. ❤️
Don't care what anyone says, this is my favorite Pierce Brosnan Bond movie. I saw this as a teen and I fell in love with Sophie Marceau.
Same here : its the only one of the Brosnan era of 007 movies that has "merit" : where Die Another Day had CGI, shootouts and an invisible Aston Martin Vanquish et cetera and it's predecessors with unnecessary humour, along with backstories that add little to the plot, this one made a huge difference.
I'll bypass Denise Richards/Christmas Jones (she's only part of a narrative) the most powerful performances come from Brosnan, Judi Dench, Robbie Coltrane, Sophie Marceau, Desmond Llewelyn and Robert Carlyle et cetera - this is good as it gets!.

She is a beautiful sensual women.
She's absolute perfection
Love when valentin helps james just before he dies. They were far from friends, but the honor and respect was still there
Yes. Had Zukovsky never been shot by Bond in the knee (as we learn in GoldenEye), he would have not been in position to save his life with the cane gun. 👍
Defended this movie on a podcast a few weeks back. For me the merit of this movie all comes (don’t say it!) back to how brilliantly portrayed Elektra is. She’s truly a unique presence, especially for a Bond movie.
Electra : 'You cannot kill me, James. You will miss me.'
Bond shoots Electra.
Bond : 'I never miss.'
One of the greatest lines in a 007-movie ever...
That's what they meant with "I guess they never miss, huh?"
Fantastic moment!
Yes, it's also a great scene in that he just offs her. I wish they'd been a bit braver with Bond over the years and given him some more callous scenes. Apart from this, there's the one in For Your Eyes Only where he kicks the guys car off the cliff. There's the "You've had your six" scene in Dr No, and Craig had a similar one at the beginning of Casino Royale. Not too many others, unfortunately.

Still a better movie than Die Another Day, a movie with a cool premise of Bond being a prisoner for an extended period of time.... that resolves that in the length of the intro song and devolves into nonsensical plot holes, campy acting, forced cameos, bad CG, and the editing of a mediocre film school student.
It started very good with the chase thru a minefield on hovercrafts and Bond finally captured , tortured released and a hazard to MI6 . The sword fight was staged good and liked the henchman with diamonds in his face but thats it . Hey I'm a faithful Bond fan still better than a Moore 007 film .
Denise Richards + Sophie Marceau.....this perfection will never be matched again. Them 2 alone make this a classic, timeless bond.
I like TWINE and I think it's Pierce Brosnan's second best after Goldeneye. The movie has its flaws but I think it's underappreciated. I agree that Christmas Jones is one of the weaker Bond girls but I think there is worse than her, I'm not annoyed by her.

Yes. The film gets too much heat. It would have a very different legacy even if they only made changes to the final 10 mins.
I thought Bond slipping back into his persona was perfect. It was a persona, he showed he was a real spy, and how spies compartmentalize their world. It also showed the “danger” of emotion.
Spot on!

Brosnan like a schoolboy with his first crush. He was a wimp in this movie.
I agree entirely, he's let her in, he's been hurt, but that's the real him, and the world doesn't need real, it needs the larger than life character, so he puts aside what he really feels and becomes bond again, down to the one liner
The world is not enough by garbage is my favourite soundtrack of all james bond themes
Please people explain why this song one of the best Bond themes in ratings. I don't know lyrics (not speaking english) as any other song. But music and singing I didn't get where is so good, i'm not expert in genres. Also is this villains song?

The day Desmond Llewelyn died, 12/19/99, I raced back to my movie theater to see TWINE for a fourth time because i had to say goodbye.
That goodbye scene must have been fairly devastating after that.

The Bond film with Denise Richards as a scientist also lays the groundwork for all the best aspects of Craig's era (same writers). Ironic.

I will unashamedly admit that this is my favorite Bond movie and the reason I got all of the DVDs before Casino Royale made Bond cool again.
I actually really, really like this Bond film. And Brosnan is my favourite Bond actor too
I think your review was fair. Would've liked to see you discuss the darker turn that Brosnan takes, and M getting a story arc, teasing what's to come in the Craig era. The entire castle climax is also thrilling and memorable. The submarine fight is not so good tho...
In all honesty, this is probably the second best Brosnan Bond film after GoldenEye. A lot of things worked, but maybe with one more re-write, it could’ve been great.
It holds up better than Tomorrow Never Dies and Die Another Day.
Anyone remember the beginning of "Never Say Never Again"?
Bond got "killed" during a training session. M told him, "Fanatical Revolutionary kidnapped a millionaire's daughter and hold her captive for eight weeks, of course she would have been brainwash, could have turned."
Nice call out.
Wow that's quite the foreshadowing
Now I'm worried, I also really liked this movie as a kid and I have fond memories of it, but I haven't seen it in years. But yeah, Denise Richards was unintentionally hilarious in her role, which is perfected in Undercover Brother where she was intentionally hilarious.
This is my favorite Pierce Brosnan Bond film.
Ditto.
The biggest thing that could have improved this movie is completely removing the Christmas Jones character. Also you have some of the film wrong. Elektra cut her own ear off. She had already convinced Renard to turn to her side. He was in fact a henchman with Electra being the main villian.
My second favourite Bond film, after Casino Royale.
One of the traffic wardens who was drenched during the boat chase was an traffic warden who was in a dcou-soap and was a legit arsehole.
I have to get it back or someone's going to have my ass. First things first
The plot of this movie is a very clever and very underrated !
Yes. It's easily one of the most dark & grim storylines in the series.
Renard is definitely the henchman. People say he’s the villain coz he’s the big threat at the end, but there’s been a lot of final boss fights with henchmen instead of the main villain. Live and Let Die, Spy Who Loved Me, debatably Living Daylights and Tomorrow Never Dies all end with an attack from the henchmen that feels way bigger than the fights with the main villain, and Diamonds are Forever and Man With The Golden Gun also have henchmen as the last enemies standing.
We're almost into the Daniel Craig era, and I feel like I'm alone when it comes to him as James Bond because I hate him in the role. The man basically has one facial expression and it's all you ever see
He's got the same gritty approach to the role Timothy Dalton had but he's just not as charming and likeable. I still enjoy his movies but he's definitely not my favourite Bond.
Yeah I agree, I do like him sometimes, but its hard to like someone who complains about being Bond to the press all the time talking about how much he hates making these movies.
Plus he is ugly as shit
