I bought my 23qt Presto in 2017 for $70 on Amazon. That is the year we moved out of the city to a very large country place, 44 acres. The canner sat in my daughter's closet for a couple of years while we lived in a camper and built a house. I don't know why but I had a serious compulsion to get it. Premonition maybe. I am so glad I did!
I love that thing. It is amazing and a true workhorse! I had not canned for years and I had given my canner and jars to my sister-in-law.

For ladles, I've used a 1 cup liquid measuring cup for years and years and years. It's easier to maneuver and pour exactly into the funnel and i can rest it on the side of the cook pot with the measuring cup's handle as i wipe the jars, do the lids and place them in the canner.

I’m sharing this to all my pantry-jealous friends and family! I so appreciate your consistent, expert, safe, conscientious advice and tutorials 💜 and while I will still feel safe using an electric canner sometimes for small batches, based on my research and experience with it, your advice is spot on as always. Starting canning knowing nothing with a glass top stove that didn’t always get hot enough, looking into an electric Nesco worked for me and I watched it pass repeated third party testing. BUT As I trust myself and gained confidence and better tools, I feel much better about relying on tried and true, sustainable tools that work with or without power. I love love my thrifted presto. And I neeed the funnel with the filter. That’s going in my next order!

I remember my first 2 pressure canners. The first one was a 16qt Presto, brand new. It sat in the box for more than a year. I was afraid to use it. It wasn't because I was afraid it would blow up, or because I'd poison someone. I was afraid I'd damage my (expensive for me) investment. One day at a garage sale, I found another one, an 18qt Presto. It was missing the rack, pressure dial and regulator. Someone had disassembled it. BUT, I had watched enough PC videos to know what I was looking for. I found the dial and regulator in a bowl with assorted gadgets and the rack was on another table. I put it all together and it was complete...for a whopping $2.00!!! If I screwed up that one, I wasn't going to cry. My first canning project was (what I now know is called) UGLY CHICKEN, LOL! It's still the first one I go for, just because it has sentimental value.

Hi Leisa, I love canning and always have. My mother taught me how when I still lived at home. We worked like a well oiled machine when we were canning tomatoes. There was never a lapse in time and we just kept going in batches. I miss her the most when I can tomatoes. I've only ever used a Presto. I have three. I am 66 years old and I think I want to be buried with them. That way I won't have to go shopping when I get to the afterlife.

That's where I bought mine in 2021. I had ordered some bulk regular and wide mouth lids from them in 2020, and they were put on backorder. Due to the US not being able to get the materials needed from China, no US company was able to make lids. The same thing was happening with cans. Anyway, it took almost a year (I was able to find some Ball lids at Walmart every once in a while to suit my needs), with them keeping me posted and asking if I wanted to keep the order or cancel. I kept it. When they finally sent them , they included 60 extra of each size to thank me for my patience. So, when I had to replace my old canner, I decided on AA and bought it from them ... same price. I can't believe how expensive they have gotten. Sad, too, because when I bought mine, I didn't know they came in colors!

When you were talking about the Ball water bath canner with the spigot it reminded me of my husbands stainless steel deep fryer pan with a spigot. I use it for making broth. After Christmas I have at least two turkey carcasses and usually 4 so I throw all that in the deep fryer pot because it’s big enough for it all to fit and then I use the spigot to fill my jars ( after I have strained all the bits out). Works great!

      And speaking of deep
Fryers - you mentioned that the aluminum steam canner got a pin hole - this is why we now have a stainless steel deep fryer pan - our aluminum one got a pin hole in it on Thanksgiving a few years back! That was scary since we didn’t know until we had the oil in the pan and on the burner! No one was hurt and we were able to acquire a new pan on Thanksgiving!

I have the other style of steam canner, it's basically a really large stock pot that came with a jar rack and a fancy lid with the dial gauge in it that tells you when you are up to the right temperature (same gauge as on yours). I like that it's very multi purpose. It's a steam canner, it can also be used as a water bath canner (same lid & gauge) or just as normal stock pot for making soups or jams or whatever. It's also induction capable which makes it more "future proof" if we ever have to get rid of our gas stove.

I had a Ball electric water bath canner and multicooker, it was an awesome bit of kit. I lived in a rented apartment with a glass top stove, so using a heavy pot full of water and jars was not an option (stoves are expensive if/when they shatter). I used the heck out of that electric water bath canner, and when I finally got rid of it (because we were moving overseas) I sold it to a lady that was going to use it to steam tamales for her home business.
Important thing to note though.....this was all several years before steam canners were approved as a replacement for water bath canning.
If steam canning had been approved back then, I'd never have bought the electric water bath canner because a steam canner is much lighter and wouldn't have broken the stove.
The one thing I'm curious about is the jar wrench (that funny looking gadget that kind of looks like a cross between the number 8 and a set of plastic coated tongs). I got one in the "canning kit" that I bought when I started. I've never ever used it. I don't know of anyone that's ever used it. My mother had one that lived her kitchen (she didn't do any canning) and she never used it. My grandmother (who did a lot of canning) had one and never used it. What even is it supposed to be for? It's awkward as heck to try to use it to hold a jar when you're putting the lid & ring on. Mine just lives at the bottom of the bucket where I store my unused lids.

      Big plastic bobby pin, [[ papa O, mama O, baby O ]]

@@angelal6700 Maybe, but I've tried it for opening jars and it doesn't work well for that. My go-to for jar opening (after I try with my hands) is a "church key" the thing you use for opening home canned jars, all you usually need to do for commercially processed jars is break the vacuum, then the lid is easy to remove.

Leisa, you instructing on how to use the jar lifter tongs made me laugh... show me you are a canner by showing me how much you don't know about canning, right?? I watched a lady one day that not only used those upside down, but she was taking a fermented recipe and converting it to a water bath canning recipe, because she had been doing it for years. People leaving comments asking her why she didn't wait for the 10 days, like the recipe she showed said, and she said it was just how she had always done it and it was great. I pointed out that it was a fermenting recipe and she replied, "Thank you." I'm not sure she understood...lol.

I live alone and find that I rarely get all the way through 1/2 pint jar of jam. I plan to use quarter pints that I found for sale in Walmart. I think those quarter pint jar sizes would be perfect when making mushroom sauce or bruschetta topping as well as practical sized jam and preserve jars. One quick question, actually two. Do I can, using water bath only or steam, the same As for pints? And 2nd can I triple stack them? By the way, I love watching your videos they always make me smile. thank you.

The amount of water the Presto requires is negligible. Put pot on the stove, fill with a pitcher put filled jars of product in the canner. There is no reason to move the canner until the jars have been removed and by then the water level is lower than when you start. I'm disabled and have had to learn ways to work around heavy lifting.

Leisa I have an 18 quart presto pressure canner. Do they not make them anymore, & will the parts for the other canners fit it? I bought it used last year & watched your videos to learn to can. I have canned so much meat & potatoes but now I’m wondering if I got a good deal!! If the other parts won’t fit this one then I am in trouble. It has been working like a charm.
