awesome. glad I checked the comments first! thanks.
No 17 instead of cocoa or other just use chocolate mix.
No 23 u can go to Southern States n get OATS for pennies .get a ton for very little. Get the white oats The blue additive is OK for horses and
The blue additive will kill humans. Run the oats thru a grinder then run it thru at a finer grind and that gives u the same as Quaker Oats or Mothers Oats.
I am very lucky because I have a full finished basement. After 2020 when I couldn't get meat, I invested quite a bit for shelves, buckets, mylar bags, storage containers and 2 more freezers. We have made this a lifestyle. I also have sensors that are easily accessible so I can monitor the temps in my freezer and the basement. I am so glad I did this when I did. I have saved so much money by rethinking the "new normal". We have had a situation where we needed to use the preps when my son who lives with me had accute Liver failure. That was January 3 this year. He just went back to work last week. I pray people try to get prepped because there really are no safety nets. God Bless 😊
Buckets Only vs Mylar Bags in buckets:
I have had two buckets split open at the bottom, both of them were unused. I guess it was just age. If I had stored grain in them without mylar bags, I would have lost everything and created a huge mess. It’s now bags in buckets only for me and my house.
Mylar bags protect the grain while the bucket protects the Mylar bag. YMMV.
An old trick from the Middle East…..soaking your beans in baking soda on the pre soak will shorten your cooking time.
A tablespoon per pound does wonders for my W2K beans….
Rinse after soaking and cook as normal.
Great tip!
I can tell you this works but I read 1/4 tsp per pound in the soaking water. Working on dry pintos stores in original bags since 2014.
While soaking your beans, how much baking soda do you add per pound of beans?
Thank you!
@@kimeverhart6253 1/4 teaspoon per pound is what I read. Any more than that and the outside skins tend to come off while soaking
a friend stored 50 pounds of popcorn in his basement in the original bag for Y2K, OPENED THE CLOSET DOOR IN LATE 2006, CALLED ME TO COMPLAIN ABOUT THE MAGGOTS. that is what he gets for being a chicago school P.E. teacher of polish heritage with a PHD in p.e. then RETIRING and moving to Arkansas and complaining about "HILLBILLIES"!
now that i have offended just about EVERY ONE OUT THERE! im a 65 year old HILL BILLY married to STEFFY. i was RAISED ON PINTO BEANS AND CORNBREAD, MY GRAND MOTHER ALWAYS PUT BAKING SODA IN THE BEANS WHILE THEY WERE COOKING, IT STOPS THEM FROM CAUSING GAS!!!!
Another trick, if want to grow a garden. The 15/16 bean soup mix can be used to grow more beans. So not only are they good to store but can be used to make more. ❤
I was recently gifted 3 old tins of spices nearly 100 years old, cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger, half full, I was shocked to find that you could still smell the spices. My neighbor recently passed and they came from her mother when the Rawleigh Man used to make home deliveries. Can't say as I would use them but the smell is really strong, especially the cinnamon.
Okay, I have to share this, I purchased brown rice, vacuum sealed several bags of 2-cups a a bag and even two years later, I opened the vacuum sealed bags, cooked them and they were great… granted, the vacuum sealed bags were also stored in a 5 gallon bucket with oxygen absorbers, even so, they were fine, tasted great…
I had a friend who would toss EVERYTHING out when "expired". I tried to tell her she was wasting her money by doing this. Also, all those spices we buy have been in huge piles in warehouses/boats in foreign countries before they ever get to a USA store. Great video. I am giving list to some family who needs to get educated in for a future food crisis. If I buy spices in plastic containers, I put in glass spice jars.
So true and a lot of herbs can be grown in most to all climates. Many people only need to grow certain herbs once every couple of years because it produce so much when grown even in containers.
Yup! I was driving the other day and saw 2 banana boxes by the side of the road FULL of food. It was in a low income area with a lot of homeless walking so I didn't stop to take a peek because they may need it way more then me. I wondered if someone put it out to help someone or if they tossed it because it was "expired"
When we got an extra free room I turned it into a walk in pantry. I love it, I can close it off, keep it pitch black, dry, and cool without too much effort.. I can go in there and just look at it, it gives me peace to know we can handle things coming our way. It feels so good and to me it is fun to go do a little straighting, or reorganizing, or pulling old forward and putting new back. I keep a couple cloth tote bags that I keep one in the kitchen and one in the pantry. Then when I need to shop the pantry more than I can comfortably carry I have a sturdy bag to get the goodies. It feels wonderful to shop sales in the stores to keep us stocked but meal shop in the pantry.
It's my happy place too
I LOVE "going shopping" in the pantry room! Mine also is a 3rd bedroom that has no bed :)
Love it❤️❤️❤️
I’ve got a room in my house with no light, an air vent, a plug in a/c unit set to 70 and three fans trying to circulate the air. We’re hitting 107 heat indexes and I’m lucky to keep that room at 75 degrees through the summer. It’s a definite struggle.
Thanks for sharing
I’m doing almost the same exact thing. Great minds think alike. 😊
I know someone in TX that covered the walls in her room with the foil coated insulation boards. She says it helps a lot.
If you have the $, maybe consider insulating that room and installing a coolbot so you could keep that room around 55 easy - electricity usage would probably be better than what you’re doing, but it of course costs to get it set up.
Leisa, definitely NO fruit in my jello - it must be smooth haha. On salt storage, any ideas on how to keep it from turning into a chunk of rock? And yes please a video on baking soda.
BTW I have noticed while searching house plans that so many pantry rooms on an outside wall have windows. No, no, no. Same with master closets, who wants sun shining in fading their clothes and degrading food supplies
A tip if you have rice that gets bugs and you can’t afford to throw it away. We are lucky we get fairly clean food in this country, but I have lived overseas where the rice always had some bugs. Put in a pot of water and swirl and skim them off. It takes a bit of work but if you have no choice, it works.
Honey - find a beekeeper close to you for best benefits and buy by the gallon if you can afford it - it costs $75 here in Dallas area. I split it into pint and quart jars for storage. For any who might not know, don’t worry if it crystallizes, it is still good.
I had to laugh, like you I turned a spare bedroom into a food pantry & have been known to just sit in there. It is calming & gives me piece of mind. Rotating & organization gives me ideas on items I need more of & ideas for better storage. That is a great list, Thanks 👍
We've even made, ahem, furniture out of buckets. You can be creative.
@@russlo5324😂😂😂 Great idea!
Maple syrup?!?! We “make” our own, we tap our Maples, and can it. I had no idea. I knew about our honey - I’ve got a stick pile. I was shocked by some but knew most. Thank you Leisa.
I have a lot of Mylar bags and OA’s, because I have a freeze dryer.
You have given me an abundance of knowledge!
Enjoy your evening.
We have also turned a bedroom into a pantry. We have a ceiling fan going 24/7 in that room. The windows are covered with black out curtains.
Have been stockpiling for years, but I feel like it would be amazing. If you did a video on how to take those items from your list and make dinners or breakfast or lunch is out of it and show new people how versatile that list really is and maybe some new meals that they’ve never thought of I love having fun trivia videos are you’re always my go to channel to watch
Many of these channels have recipes for dried meals in a jar. You would take some of those recipes and adapt them to how you cook. For example, I do not have the pressure canner or 20,000 glass jars that they say y'all need to fill to have food for a year. So I put mine in vacuum sealed pouches. Many of the dried meals in a jar are for the instant pot. I do not have an instant pot. I do have a 6-1 rice cooker that operates on my pocket solar USB power bank or the truck and other alternatives. So I put together meals so that I can put 2 cups of water and the contents of a pouch in my cooker and press a button for a quick meal. I chose 2 cups because water is sold in bottles that contain 2 cups in my area.
Recipe example
Fried Rice
Parboiled Rice
Dehydrated carrots
Dehydrated peas
Dehydrated onions
Soy sauce powder.
I can add meat if I chose later. I can add other vegetables if I want.
@@Holly-ys1me sorry if that was confusing wasn’t talking about dried meals in a jar. I just thought if Leisa had a video where she took those 20 some items that she listed off and showed newbies how to make meals out of them it would be informative for them. Some people can stockpile all they want but if they don’t know how to put it together or use it then how, same is if they don’t know how to store it how good is it? Her videos are always so entertaining and informative. I just thought this might make a great video. Sorry for any confusion it caused . Thank you
If you are not using your storage, how do you rotate it? What is scratch and how come you can make everything from it? LoL.
I would like to see some different lentil recipes. I have never eaten these but I am willing to give them a try. Thanks Leisa
I’m single in a house w several rooms empty. Got one completely packed out. Been canning like crazy all week. Stocking those shelves, loading up
In the freeze dried! Happy happy happy👊
That is awesome!
Jello is also a natural anti fungal. You can even use it to soak your feet, I would recommend the non colored for that😇
😮 never knew!
1 Quart of Honey now is $22.00 , in my area but its good stuff 🐝 We love Jello shots❤😊
Your local homey in your area is the best because its great for allergies. I buy some all the time from our local honey man. Great stuff.
Speaking of jello, saw a post that it will stop a nose bleed! Just rub the powder on your upper gums. Many of the comments agreed that it had worked for them. I now have jello in my pantry. Thanks for another great video Leisa.
Leisa, I found your channel several years ago, and I’ve learned so much. I’m a busy homeschool mom, and I’m so grateful my kids are growing up knowing how to keep a household pantry.
Thank you for consistently putting out great home economics and pantry preparation content. It has blessed my family for many years.
You are so welcome!
I'm a homeschool mom too! Thanks for reminding me that's a way to teach budgeting and economics.
Daughter and grandson visiting from out of state. Due to the very warm weather (and even with some room air conditioners) I keep the pantry door open for air flow but no windows close that are open. Grandson looked in the pantry and very quietly (I heard him) said wow 🤣. Wait till he sees the toilet paper/paper towel/kleenex stashes on the upper shelves in the office. Anyway I am refraining from ordering some items to restock for the year until the heat wave ends. Hopefully soon! Thanks for the reminders.
When we were sick as kids, my mom would have us drink warm Jello to coat our sick stomachs it works! I still do it now when sick with flu or a cold.
I like jello both ways and eat some almost every day. When I was a kid I had horrible nose bleeds and was severely anemic. The doctor told my mom to give me lots of red beans, liver & jello. I love all three :).
Whoa thunk! Very good to know
I am very fortunate. Our little town has a farmer that comes every Friday, weather permitting, and brings up his organic honey and his in season fruits and veggies. He just raised his prices this year to $22 for a quart. Well worth it. A forever food that also makes great medicines!! Cover peeled garlic cloves with the honey in an airtight jar and set away like a diy extract. for colds and other illnesses take like a cough syrup. Amazing!
TIP for those canning corn: don't throw out those cobs!!! Turn them into homemade corn syrup... soooo yummy and better for you than the store❤
Can't wait to make more this season myself, eventhough got several jars left from last 😉
I'll have to Google it! I didn't know
How do u turn your cob into syrup?
Also, the dried cobs are fantastic "fuel" for grilling, cooking
How to?
@@dag118yes, there are a couple videos on YT on making it. Easier than I thought... except waiting for it to cook down
Jams and marmalades should last a very long time (until you open them of course)
I buy my raw honey from a local Middle Eastern store. It's cheaper and will last you a long time. I bought a liter last summer that was completely crystallized. I put it in my oven with the light on overnight and now it's nice and clear. I put a wooden spoon to hold the door open so that it doesn't get too hot.
Hi Leisa, I'm happy to hear about all of these foods. Thank you very much. I only buy pure vanilla extract. Salt is a mineral. I'm going to town tomorrow for corn starch and soy sauce. I like bananas in my cherry jello and I like whipped cream on top. My grandmother made it and stored it in those cute little refrigerator dishes. With the glass top.
The Jello surprised me. I did not know that. I have spices that are several years old that I still use.
Jello was a new one to me, also.
A tip: maple syrup only lasts forever if it is never opened. Once opened it can get mold in it and often does. My solution is to store it in small bottles instead of large ones and only open a small bottle at a time. If mold gets in it , the strands can grow through the whole bottle so I throw it out.
Good to know, I just bought Mylar bags and mason jars…so starting to learn to store for emergencies
Very helpful, thank you! I love canned goods since u don’t need tons of water
I saw another similar video that also mentioned dry pasta, along with many of the things you mentioned.
I'd like to add dry kool-aid mixes in the little pouches. Just add water and sweetener.
But... add some citric acid, unsweetened kool-aid lemon flavor, baking soda, and salt, and you've got yourself a nice dishwasher powder for cleaning your dishes. Add white vinegar as the rinse agent!!!
Thanks Leisa!
My thought is that I may not eat it today but if you’re hungry you will!
I buy a few things that I like but may not eat all the time because they aren’t the healthiest but in an emergency all bets are off 😂
So true!
I’ve been building my pantry in my tiny apartment using my main walk in closet. I keep reorganizing and expanding - good shelves are very imp in a small place. Don’t forget your pets!
Great info again Leisa! I double and tripled up on the rice with my dogs in mind. If dog food runs low or if it's crazy expensive since it hasn't stopped climbing, I can make them food with rice and veggies and the juice from the Ugly Chicken!
You can season rice for the dogs with low salt bullion, beef or chicken. If there's any meat you can set for future use, dehydrate, smoke, or freeze dry, powder it if possible, add to homemade dog food. It is necessary to Rehydrate meats first, as it will swell in their stomachs, It could dehydrate the animal in the process, or possibly form a blockage. You can fit this in when you cook the rice or beans. The juice from canned meat, think beef. Chicken, spam, tuna. Sardines or kippers are a good flavoring, the oils help their digestive system, just watch the sodium level. Cats will eat flavored rice, add a few veges, like frozen mixed bags. And a couple diced sardines or kippers. Watch the salt. Human milk gives cats diarrhea. It's crazy to me to have written all this lol. God bless you.
@@melodyclark4347 this is great info. Thanks. I literally never thought of anything like this for my animals.
Could you make a video showing us how many oxygen absorbers are needed per size of Mylar bags.
Mashed potato's is Irish Guacamole. :D
🤣
Thank you for this really important video!! All (well, we probably don’t NEED sugar, but it sure helps make the ‘medicine’ go down😂) these ingredients are real foods, from the earth, that are necessary and vital for a healthy body and knowing that we can stock them for a very long time is invaluable!!
You have such a wide and popular platform and I’m so thankful that you are using it to influence people to live in such a positive and proactive way, Leisa!
You are a hero to many, including me. Again, thank you. ♥️
Leisa I always learn something new from you. I'm glad I didn't throw out my expired corn syrup😉
Good!
Jello and vodka did you say shooters
I also store salt in mason jars, but I use the reusable canning lids. The salt will not eat through that. Also use 2 liter bottles from club soda the. Wrap around the lid with lots of electric tape.
Good sensible list of products...I live in south Africa and I am not quite sure what you call corn actually is...here we have a staple product called meilies...which is maize....it can be stored basically forever as is ...dried...but the common practice is maize meal....it's a course sort of flour...excellent long term food....used to make breakfast porridge...used to bake...used as a starch sort of like mash potatoes with a sause...very versatile product...pap en sous....porridge and sauce
Meilies is what we call sweet corn here in the Western Hemisphere (I lived in Zimbabwe in the late 80's and LOVED the stuff!!). Hope that helps.
My formal living room is what I converted into a pantry. It’s not perfect but working well two years in
I put paper towels in the bags before putting in the freezer. After taking out and put towel on bottom to defrost. Then take towel out of package. Worked for years.
Love this! I'm also a confessed pantry nerd. I am not a big beans and rice girl, but with a tighter than usual grocery budget, I've broken into my buckets and am experimenting with new recipes and ways of incorporating them into my meals to extend them. My newest way to eat them with is Curtido, a spicy latin style coleslaw. Delicious!
When my kids were young undiscovered I could sneak extra protein into their marinara sauce bby blending in some cooked beans.
Thank you, Leisa! Great list and helpful tips to go along, too! I have heard that “buttery instant potato flakes” don’t have a long shelf; of course, because of the fat.
Exactly
They have plain mashed potatoes. You can purchase dehydrated potatoes in slices, cubes, shreds or flakes.
Great list, thank you for the reminder! I only use corn syrup to make caramels and pecan pie, but will definitely add a few bottles to my preps.
Just found you on my feed. So Glad I did!!!! I’m going to see All your videos….Hopefully you have videos of canning and preserving foods “for dummies” like me. I have no idea how to can. What the heck are Mylar bags and how do you use them, etc. I’m totally uneducated in this but know I need to learn to keep my family prepared. Any advise on resources to learn would be greatly appreciated!!!!!! Thank you for what you do to keep us safe.
Go through my pmaylists . You can do it
Great list! Just a reminder on the potato flakes ... make sure that the ONLY ingredient is potato. No added oils, butter, etc. They will cause the potatoes to go rancid. Thanks for sharing the list!
Thank you for all the great info!! I worked at a seafood restaurant way back in 1978 and we made clam chowder and to thicken it we used instant potatoes , way better then flour!!
That is awesome!
I’ve always thickened my soups with potato flakes. It’s great!
@@mamabird2434 It's the best and way better taste
I thought that's what corn starch is used for.
What is corn starch for?
What do I use it for?
@@melmelbry5754mix it with warm water first to thicken, then add to soups.
It's nice to know that my saved quart of maple syrup from Grandpa Olson's sugar bush is still good from the 70s. I would have to be starving to open it though!
Love Jello, fruit on the side and sometimes whip-cream on top - but real whip cream - nothing from a can or a plastic tub. If we are having whip cream the bowl is chilled along with the whippers, there are just somethings I won't budge on and a little splash of homemade Bourdon Vanilla. Great information, I love the list because every item is the beginning of something great 🥂
How do you make Bourbon vanilla?
@@jessicaquiroz7178
Just put a vanilla bean that you’ve cut open and scraped the seeds from and put both the seeds and bean in a glass jar and cover with bourbon. Let sit for weeks and voila 😊 Each time you use a vanilla bean, you can add it to the liquid.
Fruit in the jello! Mandarin oranges, fruit cocktail, pineapple tidbits....yay!!
Don't get instant potatoes mixed up with potato flakes. Aaddd some of rhhe flakes in fried chicken coating to get a crisper chicken.
Love this! Super helpful!
Ok I need to go find the "lentils into tortilla bread" video. I'm intrigued.
It's so good!
Apple cider vinegar also takes the sting out of bee stings. Almost immediately for me anyway. 😀
Oh yes! My Mom ALWAYS put ACV to the bee stings for us when we were growing up and I continued with this for my children. It indeed helps with the pain. It also helps with the discomfort of sunburns. It also is a good hair rinse for those of us with auburn hair!! It makes the red shine!!
Whole spices like allspice, cloves, cinnamon sticks, cumin seeds, coriander etc… will last forever and will retain their great flavor when ground fresh (I use an old coffee grinder or mortar and pestle).
Grow your own!! They are very prolific and dry easily to incorporate into your own mixes. Also many herbs can be blended into tea mixes and have medicinal properties.
Many herbs can be grown in rather divergent areas successfully. But spices are very different, such as, cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg etc. .
Thank you!
Thanks for the information! ❤️
Great report, thanks
