Disclaimer: this only worked because the other players were unaware of the new ways of the WOLOLO. If the enemy monk is holding a relic near you: KILL HIM! How it works: it's actually the relic that converts - you need to hold one with a monk. Once you start the conversion, there's no turning back and your monk can't move. Whether the conversion is successful or not, there's a cooldown timer on the relic after you hit the button. Not only all that, but if your relic is in the battlefield instead of in a monastery/landmark you're losing a good amount of gold! Two things: having played both in the closed and open beta, I can tell you, gameplay is absolutely ON POINT, they have fixed and balanced a ton of things and made it a really enjoyable experience. Fun is absolutely granted on AoE IV. The only aspect I still have issues with is the simplistic UI, but enough members of the community have already complained and pointed out this flaw, so here's hoping that they will listen to us and deliver a solid product on day 1. Fingers crossed!
Yep! It definitely is a lot of fun already, and super stable for a beta, though I'd like to see some Quality of Life improvements that I'm sure will come. I actually like the UI, but it could use some additional color coding. You're guaranteed to have fun though, totally agree!
no, no and no, having played the game for 100+ hours now, AOE 4 is nowhere near finished, it needs bigger maps for up to atleast 12+ players so you can play with all your friends, like in the previous games, its still very simplistic wich is not necesarily a bad thing, but RELEASED with NO CUSTOM GAMES? and no map editor, big fail. its coming but the game is still in early access imo.

This and age three gives me anxiety about not knowing what units are on the map. With AOE 2 you know the basic universal units and the unique units and how to counter.
tbh, everything just looks indistinguishable, I couldn't tell a bunch of houses from a unit production building at first sight. how does anyone call that good design?
@@rakowozz You cant pickup relics till 3rd age, I'm fairly certain. Tried to get 3 relics early so they were prepared for the super-monastery as soon as it was finished and I could not pick them up. Might be miss remembering tho.
Its not the monk that converts, it's the relic that they hold that converts. (Notice that the relics have a very high cooldown time, and doing so slows down the monk's movespeed further-I also think that it's a "channeling" action, which cannot be cancelled once pressed.)
some people would think that this is op but in all honesty against people that have a lot of apm these priests are dead in a matter of seconds and then you lose an important relic

It's actually almost impossible to convert other units, since your monk is a huge target and the enemy is proactively targeting him. Notice Green tried to convert me but I just wouldn't let him

Actually in my experience the woolo is MUCH weaker compared to aoe2. In aoe2 if you got a bunch of monks and good APM,you can click fast and convert half the enemy hvy cav/elephants(range is pretty great to 9 unupgraded,12 upgraded) in aoe4 you need a relic to convert(so no constant monk spam and conversions like the AI likes to do in aoe2),your monk becomes super visible and vulnerable when he activates the wooolo(in most realistic game situations the monk will be sniped by archer/siege fire,these guys in the clip really didnt seem to have a clue about this mechanic and didnt try at all to counter),the woolo has a huge 120s cooldown and even if you dont have any ranged units to snipe a monk hiding behind his army in a choke point(which is litteraly the situation in which this strat would be most viable),you still have more than enough time to move your melee units out of conversion range. I actually like this new woolo,I deffinetly wont miss constant monks/conversion spam by AI in aoe2(maybe war elephants will be viable again?),it's a far more clutch move now and you could potentialy make some really big plays with it,but what I like about it is that woolo in aoe4 could basicly only work if your enemy makes a big mistake to ignore the woolo,so it's a thing that can be used to punish a player who gets distracted,but if you are watching your army and are carefull of it,you would probably never loose any units to it.

Hi santaras, you can’t choose your own color yet, but there is an option in the settings: under GAME, it’s "Player Colors" - it’s Team Based by default, but I chose Unique instead. This was a 2v2, but the color are still random
I gotta say, because of the visuals I was VERY skeptic of the game. But it totally grew on me, it's incredibly fun, I'm in real abstinence since the betas. Been rewatching a few matches I recorded hahah

It's very hard to understand what is happening compared to more easy to follow strategy games like aoe2 and starcraft 2. Very high detail level, tiny units, hard to follow terrain features, too large trees, too realistic building size etc are contributing to this. It's the Empire Earth fallacy where a small subsection of playerbase will prefer more realistic graphics but the game can never become the most popular game due to hard to follow visuals. Looks fantastic for casual singleplayer though!
After 60+ hours (scratch that it's been 100+ already lol) with the game, my perception did a full 180, I’m used to it now. But I recall the initial impression in the community being quite negative about the graphics! Some people clamored for even more realistic graphics (a là Manor Lords, an UE indie game), but I think I can see how that could hurt competitive
Oh, and you mentioned unit size! It's notably been changed in comparison to the first game trailers. The result is a lot of buildings feel out of scale, though it might even help legibility

They played it maybe a bit to save... mechanics are mostly a mix from the best of AoE2 and even Age of Mythology... and AoE3. But in the end we get a product what is maybe not the giant Next Gen thing... but the best out of the old with a new touch. More of a soft Reboot than a big new game... but a good one.
no it doesnt, aoe3 has way better graphics if you ask me, the no manned artillery is a big no. first off all I dont like any reflection of ao2 looks way to cartoonish
The game is a lot of fun to play but I think its a "little" less fun to watch than AOE2. The UI needs a little bit more work and so does the graphics. Dark age could be longer but they do keep it in castle for a fair amount of time. I wouldn't mind a few more troops either. its "almost" there though and shaping up to be great!
You know that one thing that annoys the crap out of me are the priests in the older AOE games, man, those guys really are annoying, thank god now it's different
The gunpowder sounds are really satisfying
Sound design in this game is superb (except for the TC ding ding, of course), the dynamic music is a great touch too
