Thank you! I have a family of skunks that live on the property, I love them!! They've accepted me and never act defensively. They even come out in the morning when I feed the cats and share kibble. They've enhanced my life, I hope others learn how special they are! Thanks again!
A couple of years ago a skinny skunk appeared in my backyard in the fall. My first thought was she is never going to make it through the winter, so I helped out with mealworms soaked in honey and sunflower hearts. By the time she disappeared under the shed with the woodchuck for the winter, her belly was touching the ground. I’ve seen her out back with as many as four babies although there may be more that I don’t see. If I go out at night to feed them in the summer, they will retreat under the shed and peek out at me while I throw out some mealworms and sunflower seeds for them. I am happy to have them as neighbors and I hope they will be living with me for years to come.
Skunks are great! I love meeting other skunk enthusiasts; they are such misunderstood animals. I have 10 that I feed every night, they live under my house. The young kits love to sit on my feet and have their heads scratched, just like a cat.
I have a skunk living under the shed in the back yard, I have lived with her there for many years. I don't have a problem with the animal being there... But my roommate seems to not like it, and he has tried filling in the hole, but I go out right behind him and uncover it... I have met the skunk, even had her babies come up to be and check me out without any worries... I love my skunk... She lives in the patch of woods behind my house, with a male Ringneck pheasant... They are very happy there...
I have a family of skunks that live under my house. This summer I’ve been putting out a small amount of food for them. They’re so used to me now they come over to me, the kits love to sit on my feet and will eat out of my hand. They love to sit underneath my chair and snack while I scratch them gently behind their ears. Their coats are incredibly thick and soft. I’ve never felt in danger of being sprayed. They are lovely animals, and funny too. It’s so much fun watching them interact with each other, they are very melodramatic animals. It’s amazing that 10 skunks, one human, and one Maine Coon cat can all hang out together harmoniously, although I do make sure my cat stays up on the deck, so that she stays a few feet away from them.
This video deserves more likes. I have learned so much. Im disappointed....My brother n law trapped a baby one and he didn't know what he was doing he forgot a out it.... and I found out it was sitting in the cage for almost a week. Thank God he was still alive. We only moved him not to far from where he was trapped. He looked little. He was so cute... after seeing that and letting the little dude go I went a searched a video and this was the right one. ✅ awesome I look at Skunks way different now.
Thank you for this informative video. I'd like to offer a correction: Skunks CAN and DO climb trees. It may not be their preferred route to travel, however most nights skunks and raccoons (I spotted a mink once) climb a maple tree, to access my backyard, which has a 9' wooden fence. This is the route the skunks take: Climb up the maple tree, hop onto 9' fence, drop down 4 ' on to another fence (old cedar cow fence, that encloses my vegetable garden) climb down that fence, then they run directly to an extra large 4" deep container to take a very long drink of fresh water. After that, they root around the yard for grubs, insects, lots of mice and they gobble up any sunflower seeds and peanuts that have spilled out of my bird/squirrel/chipmunk feeders. I also throw seed down for ground feeding birds like doves, so there are a lot of reasons all these animals visit my yard around the clock. My first reaction to discovering that skunks were coming into my yard at night was to want to get rid of them ASAP. I didn't want to risk them being startled by noise coming from the house or TV and spraying while my windows are open or spraying me or my dog at night. I wanted them gone by any means necessary!!! BUT once I discovered the main reason they were entering my yard was for WATER I felt bad, I can't deny any animal water and so I decided to let them stay, thus far I haven't been sprayed. Every so often I do smell skunk but no more often than I did before they started drinking here. Now I clean and add fresh water to "two" containers daily and take the dog out front at night.
I'm here specifically because I saw a skunk with a cup on its head last night. I was working so I was worried about getting sprayed...but a cabbie stopped and just took the cup off its head. It just took a step back, looked at the cabbie, blinked, and ran off. The most salient part was that the cup was exactly the same sort in the screen cap here...a McDonald's McFlurry cup.
They are all over my old apartments and when I go on walks, they are all over my trail. Mainly we keep our distance. Me and the skunks. It’s not like they want to be all up in your business. But at the apartments, sometimes they would be near you and they just really wouldn’t care. But that’s not a reason to be alarmed. It’s not like they are aggressive. That means they are comfortable with you. So why would they spray? They would only spray if they felt like they had no other option. They would much rather leave and be out of your way. I know they like to keep their distance so I felt safe the other day approaching one with my camera on Instagram and it was so cute it did what you said. It took a little step back like it was about the charge at me, and then it spun around and took off running the opposite direction and never looked back hahaha it was so funny.
Yes my last apartment had SO many skunks and squirrels. This new place has NONE, and I’ve already got a couple spiders. One venomous! I was at my last place for a decade and only got like 2 spiders the whole time and zero roaches. I bet the animals were eating em! We also had stray cats too!
It was traditionally believed that badgers, otters, zorillas, african striped weasels, marbled polecats, patagonian weasels, grisons, wolverines, tayras, martens, fishers, skunks, and stink badgers were included within the family Mustelidae, but it is now known that Mustelidae now only includes the weasels, ferrets, and minks, whilst badgers, otters, zorillas, african striped weasels, marbled polecats, patagonian weasels, grisons, wolverines, tayras, martens, fishers, skunks, and stink badgers are now treated as four separate families, all fifteen species of badgers of the genera Meles, Arctonyx, Taxidea, Mellivora, and Melogale are classified together within the family Melidae, the otters are reranked as the family Lutridae, the zorillas, african striped weasel, marbled polecat, patagonian weasel, grisons, wolverine, tayra, martens, and fisher are classified together within the family Ictonychidae, and the skunks and stink badgers are classified together within the family Mephitidae, while Melidae, Lutridae, and Ictonychidae are grouped with Mustelidae into the superfamily Musteloidea, Mephitidae is the most independently evolved remnant of Mustelidae in its obsolete systematics as Mephitidae actually belongs to an entirely different superfamily known as Procyonoidea, which makes skunks and stink badgers most closely related to the raccoons, ringtail, cacomistle, coatis, olingos, olinguito, kinkajou, and red panda.
Wow, what an interesting comment. I’ve never heard of a zorilla, at first I thought you had made a typo! I’m off to do some research, there are a few animals you listed that I’m not familiar with. I love my skunks though, they make great companions on a summer night. They’re the most pleasant of all the nocturnal mammals that visit the woods in my backyard. 🦨🦨😻
🌹 Many thanks for such an interesting video. Skunks aren’t native to England, but if they were I’d be happy to have some as neighbours ! [ Regardless of aromas , if they feel safe they should be ok ] 🌿🌿🦨🦨🦨 🌹🌹
Skunks at the old apartment had no problem walking around the sidewalk where we walk and around our cars. Is that because of ignorance/being blind or is it like I thought and they are comfortable and familiar with us? They seem to have no problem walking around near you and it made me comfortable with them kind of like a cat being nearby. Actually they seemed to be more comfortable than cats in that regard. Couldn’t get an apartment cat to ever come near me in the slightest. Can skunks smell humans? Or do they not know
@@kadenceboyce3216 yes. Very cuddly. When they are happy, they make a lip smacking sound. Mine sleeps with me at night. They are very smart and love to play.
@@kadenceboyce3216 they really make good pets. Just make sure you find a good breeder and where you live allows skunks as pets. I have found many helpful videos on UA-cam and websites online. I found my Sasha online at Hoobly. Good luck to you. I am glad to help.
They sprayed behind our house in the night because something startled them. We had to move out of that part of the house because the smell was so strong it was painful. But go ahead, just pretend they’re so wonderful to live with.
I relocate them. It's them or my wife and I'd like to keep her around. I do so humanely and never get sprayed. No exposed garbage on our property, and no aamount of trying seems to eliminate the grubs they love to eat in our lawn. Sorry, off to the woodlot.
Skunks are actually beneficial to have around because they keep garden pests under control, they aren’t harmful to humans and will only spray as a last resort. If your wife still insists I’d say lose her and keep the skunks but that’s just me. 😂🦨
@@silvermainecoons3269 Well, I've been married for thirty years. I think I'll keep the Missus and lose the skunks. I don't harm them and, well, I love my wife. YMMV.
I have 10 living under my house (it’s a big house). I spend time with them every night watching them eat and drink. The babies will sit on my feet and eat from my hand. The spray cleans up pretty well with Dawn dish soap... it's not as bad as I was taught as a kid... just in case!
