LOL!! Skunks are so beautiful and so cute! I love how he chases and stomps the crickets! I've never seen it, but skunks will also roll caterpillars between their paws to remove the stings and then eat them! XD
Thank YOU for posting! I have just learned that I have a wild skunk hitting my porch and eating cat food I put out for a feral cat, this helps a bunch ❤
@@AdventurousHeartRachelNagle Thank you! I have a collie/shepherd mix and a beagle, they are like my children. my girl won't eat live bugs but she loves exotic nutritions canned crickets and grasshoppers! i appreciate you and marvin teaching me something!! my stella loves all veggies, including corn, but i never knew i could give it to her right off the cob! we'll be giving this a go today at dinner time!! ❤
Do the fruits and veggies from the grocery stores need to be washed? Is the corn served uncooked? Love this video!!! Marby is adorable! ❤️❤️💖. I have slunks, raccoons, foxes, neighbors cats and ferals stopping by to dine! Lol!
Fun and thanks! Yes, most of the items I feed them in regards to fruits and veggies are raw including corn. I’d say it’s always a good idea to wash items…I typically prepare their food to the level I’d prepare food for myself or a family member…after all, mine are really part of the family 😉.
My ideal girlfriend must have a pet skunk, said almost no one, ever. I'm kidding, girl, and I envy you. I'm watching this now because we have a pair of wild skunks that seem to reside nearby. Late afternoons both are in our backyard, foraging for bugs. We never feed them, but it's so tempting sometimes.
Lol…me on the other hand…my ideal husband must let me have a pet skunk 🦨 and pet porcupines…good thing I found him!!! Very exciting that you have the opportunity to see wild skunks foraging around your house. We have a wild one that lives in the area as well…I only see him every few months, but I get so excited when I do! Good for you for not feeding wildlife!!!
Good question…like many pet skunks, in the United States, he is descented, so he can’t technically spray…that is his scent glands have been removed. With that said, sometimes he does a butt block and farts and it does smell a little skunky 🦨 😉
You are correct that it is very important to manage your skunk’s weight. It is more about how much you feed them rather than how often. My skunk gets fed 2x/day. Sometimes during the winter months they tend to slow down, so he may choose to eat just once a day. Skunks have a tendency to overeat, so it’s important to only give them a set amount…their stomachs aren’t that big after all.
Thanks...yes, a skunk can be litter box trained. Skunks naturally like to go to the bathroom in corners, so a corner litter box should be used. I talk about it during this video: ua-cam.com/video/42VK8Dn8dl0/v-deo.html Start around 1:37. Great question!
In general skunks are pretty quiet animals. They make noises to communicate. They could be communicating that they are angry, frightened, upset, surprised, want attention or content. Typically young skunks are more vocal than adults. In my case, Marv hardly makes any noises except when he is sleeping. When he is sleeping he will make bird-like chirping noises.
wondering if your skunks first name was Bob? I looked up your video because I just had one go right by my garden window. I also wanted to know what they eat and you said potatoes, so I better get busy and cover up my garden with chicken wire or it's liable to be gone tomorrow😅.
It does very well eating vegetables and fruits. I felt sad when you fed it crickets, they too want to live and they have their purposes on the earth. You are doing a good job and I myself, I am looking for food to feed skunks in the park near my home because I believe they have their purpose in life, so I found your DVD after researching on UA-cam. Anything that moves has a spirit and crickets must not be fed to other animals. It saddens me quite a bit to see that, all lifeforms are supposed to eat from the Plant Kingdom. I subscribed because I got what I wanted and it is how to feed skunks. They have this stinky liquid that is their defense and I will stay out of their way, but I want to feed them. I am also feeding birds, rabbits, and chipmunks in the park, out of the way of people.
What do you think skunks eat in the wild? They eat all kinds of bugs and even rodents. Circle of life. God knows what he's doing. Not all animals are supposed to be Herbivores. 🤔
One of those "purposes" of many creatures is to be prey to others. Sure it can be sad, but that's the natural order. Those birds you feed also eat crickets and other bugs. As for "all life forms are supposed to eat from the plant kingdom", Uhh..... What plant are lions and tigers meant to survive on? 🤔
Good question...I don’t have this problem, so I don’t have a great answer. My best advice would be to limit the amount of dog food you give your skunk and try to entice it with sweet tasting vegetables first like sweet potatoes and corn or even some fruits. Once it starts eating those foods, then add in other less sweet tasting vegetables. Mine only rarely gets dog food and only a few pieces at a time. If he eats too much dog food too fast, it actually causes him to throw up. I give mine a little cottage cheese or ricotta each morning, and only use it as a way for him to eat his Vita-skunk vitamins that have taurine in it. This seems to be an essential vitamin to supplement your pet skunk diet with based on studies from my vet who specializes in skunk care.
In a lot of cases, it is best to let the baby skunk where it is at as the mother may come back for it. If you know something happened to the mother, you can look for wildlife rehabilitators in your state. Surprisingly, yes, they are really soft. Before I had an opportunity to pet a skunk for the first time, I thought their fur would feel coarse and wiry, but that is far from the truth. All of their fur feels the same regardless of its color.
That little guy went to town on that carrot. I have a bunch of skunks around. I always thought it was the fat groundhog next door ripping up my carrot beds. I feed my wild skunks dry dog food to keep them out of my trash barrel. We have had a deal for decades. I even have an albino one living in my shed. I always thought they were carnivores.
Great question...Skunks are natural diggers. They use their long claws to dig for food such as grubs. They also use their long front claws to hold their food while they eat. You’ll notice their back claws are much shorter.

Do they eat a raw egg or do you boil /scramble it? Thanks! 👍
In the wild, they would of course eat a raw egg. I always cook the eggs for my pet skunk.
This is why I don't believe we're omnivores. Imagine a skunk with human teeth!
"omnivore" is a dubious man-made classification. You're correct our teeth show we are plant eaters ( like our close relatives the chimpanzees)
We had skunks which we loved having in our backyard. Somehow they got runover by stupid drivers. We're very sad till this day.
