    Skunks are such beautiful creatures! My family has sort of a history with skunks... my great-grandmother had an exotic pet store, and she sold de-scented skunks as pets. We have a newspaper clipping from the early 1900s describing a multi-car accident she caused downtown by walking her pet skunk on a leash. 😁

      Laynie Fingers my step-grandma had a pet skunk too. she said that a door2door salesman tried to sell her a cat flea collar cause he saw a litterbox. she finally quit saying "I don't have a cat, and called her skunk, it comes stomping to the door and she never saw a man run so fast.

    One time I was walking to work early in the morning (about 6:45AM), when I heard a rustling in a bush beside me. I looked over, and a skunk walked out. I then started to walk even faster down the street, where it continued to follow me for a few blocks, until I had to cross a street. I thought it was strange that it wanted to be near me, rather than run away. My guess is that humans had been feeding it, and it was after my bagel.

    Successfully communicating with an animal friend always feels so good. My cat and I have a "come here for pettins" signal and a "stop doing that or I'll move you!" signal. Of course, being a cat, she always weighs her options first.

      hardly. Jessi has done many videos, with many adorable animals. Her birds are amazing, but the squeaks of pleasure from the porcupines are also adorable. One of them had infected teeth, so some had to be removed. Check out Kemosabe and Kizmit.

      About a week ago, we were shocked to find a skunk INSIDE our garage ( the door was open a foot or so) eating out of our cat’s food dish!! Just last night (she?) brought a younger skunk in for breakfast. We live in high desert and skunks are a rare sight.

    I just had my first interaction today with the skunk at the zoo where I'm interning! He was very flighty because he was left alone all winter to sleep. Clicker training sounds like a great idea- I'll see if I can try it! What treats do you suggest? Also do you ever clip Lollipop's nails? The zoo skunk's nails were crazy long since he hadn't used them all winter.

    Can you train ANY animal or can you mostly just train domestic(ish) ones?

    • @animalwondersmontana
      @animalwondersmontana  8 років тому +6

      You can train any animal who's behavior can be modified by an external stimulus. So, as long as you're able to find and give a good stimulus after the behavior you want them to do, you can increase the chances that behavior will occur again. Which is what training is. Basically, yes!

    Does she ever get in bad mood or refuse and start spraying? Or is smelly behavior only when they're afraid?

    • @Oracle428
      @Oracle428 8 років тому

      +Nagarath16 Jessie said in some earlier video (not sure which one - may have even been on a SciShow Talk-show episode) that Lollipop has had her scent glands removed, so she cannot spray... she also explained skunk defense mechanisms - they give several signals (like stomping) before they spray, and only use their spray as a last resort if they feel threatened.

    how does this teach her to dig on demand? woudn't it just teach her to reach into your hand when you put it up?

    • @maggieedna
      @maggieedna 8 років тому

      +Max Fux there are basically two ways to teach an animal a complicated trick. way one is chaining, where the animal does a bunch of known behaviors one after the other, and way two (which is whats going on here) is refining, where you start with a super broad version of the target behavior and slowly refine it into the more complicated version. like, when I taught my dog to balance a treat on her nose, the first version of balance was her letting me hold her nose still gently, and then we got more complicated. you can see jessi refining the behavior already in this video. first lollipop put her paw on jessis hand for the treat, then she has to do both paws, then she has to dig at her hand. eventually jessi will probably require more digging for the treat and then slowly remove her hand until dig just means the digging motion, not hand required.
