Skunks are such beautiful creatures! My family has sort of a history with skunks... my great-grandmother had an exotic pet store, and she sold de-scented skunks as pets. We have a newspaper clipping from the early 1900s describing a multi-car accident she caused downtown by walking her pet skunk on a leash. 😁
Laynie Fingers my step-grandma had a pet skunk too. she said that a door2door salesman tried to sell her a cat flea collar cause he saw a litterbox. she finally quit saying "I don't have a cat, and called her skunk, it comes stomping to the door and she never saw a man run so fast.
One time I was walking to work early in the morning (about 6:45AM), when I heard a rustling in a bush beside me. I looked over, and a skunk walked out. I then started to walk even faster down the street, where it continued to follow me for a few blocks, until I had to cross a street. I thought it was strange that it wanted to be near me, rather than run away. My guess is that humans had been feeding it, and it was after my bagel.
Aw, listen to her snuffling! How cute
Awwwe soo sweet! It must be the biggest buzz when an animal finally gets it down pat and presents it to an audience perfectly and consistently 😍
Skunks are so cute!!!
Lollipop! She is my favorite of all the Animal Wonder's crowd.
I think it would be awesome if you could do a daily or even weekly training video with one animal so people can see the progression/ time it takes to really train an animal
I second this
+Mark from acounting Yes that'd be awesome!
yes, i'm considering buying one
Skunks are so cute! Skunks are really common where I live but if I see one outside, I go in the opposite direction!
She's so cute! Also who would've thought Lollipop would be such a good name for a skunk!
Lollipop is one of my favorites, she's so fluffy! And clearly pretty bright :)
I found myself smiling throughout this. Thank you for sharing with us. Yo go, Lollipop! :)
Omg skunks are so beautiful!😍😍😍😍
her snuffling is literally the cutest!
Haha, my cat heard the clicker in your video and is now wandering around performing her tricks expecting treats!! >.
Wow I didn't realize skunks were so smart!
Just love that fluffy tail!
Successfully communicating with an animal friend always feels so good. My cat and I have a "come here for pettins" signal and a "stop doing that or I'll move you!" signal. Of course, being a cat, she always weighs her options first.
those little snuffly noises!
Training animals is one of my favorite things to do. I love to see how you train your animals so I can learn better techniques for working with my dog, and when I am training/desensitizing horses. Loved the video, keep up the great work! :D
I agree with mark from accounting's post!
I really like how you end the session. That's a great idea on to reinforce learned behaviors.
This is probably the most adorable video I’ve ever watched!
hardly. Jessi has done many videos, with many adorable animals. Her birds are amazing, but the squeaks of pleasure from the porcupines are also adorable. One of them had infected teeth, so some had to be removed. Check out Kemosabe and Kizmit.
So cute!
Aww, Lollipop is such a cutie!! Great video!
Lollipop is so cute!
Love Lollipop !
Both thumbs up. I love skunks.
can we PLEASE get a crash course zoology with Jessi???????? John, Hank Green, anyone?
can you please do a video on how to care for baby birds. how and when to start training them and their diet requierements.
I 💖😘 skunks!
You are amazing I love watching your videos and learning from it I would love to work at a zoo I love all a d everyanimal living on this earth
You are WONDERFUL, Jessi!
Sweet. Thx
Really cool to see one of the training sessions :-)
I think she did very well with digging. "All" that remains now is getting her to do so consistently on cue, which I realise is the challenging part.
I'm hoping you'll do the crocodile skink video soon!
I loved this! Could we see more videos like this one?
Maybe a stupid question, but, is Lollypop de-scented? I only know of one person in my life that had a skunk and I think they still had their glands in tact.
very cool
love it! I have a question for my African grey, Ava. Are nuts okay, like peanuts cashews and almonds?
+Amal Abunada in the right amounts yes almonds are the healthiest though
Its intresting that skunks have lived in forests since the beginning of time, but have adapted to live, in suburbs and semi forest living.
ahh I would love to do this stuff with my cat! She's so friendly and curious and active, I wish I could find some way to keep her mind entertained...unfortunately she seems pretty indifferent to any sort of treat I've offered her and I haven't found a good reward for her :(
Very nice! Do skunks eat cat treats?
About a week ago, we were shocked to find a skunk INSIDE our garage ( the door was open a foot or so) eating out of our cat’s food dish!! Just last night (she?) brought a younger skunk in for breakfast. We live in high desert and skunks are a rare sight.
Do skunks make good pets? I have gerbils for years and I give them a ton of attchion. But I am getting to the point for animal that lives longer then a gerbil.
Saffirea have u seen pet skunk 101. here on utube it might help plus look at other skunk pet owners ask them question u need even google on skunk pet too
awesome! thats also how I train my cats. and my dog. and my alligator. and my snake.
and my girlfriend
LOL, you have a pet alligator?
PimpDaddy Deadpool
Nah, my cats resemble a snake and an alligator tho. Does that count?
Shangori thou deceiveth.
PimpDaddy Deadpool
>:)
i was wondering, since u have a variety of daytime and night time animals, how does it impact the nocturnal ones when u do presentations? does it mess up their "schedules for a short time or do they have to turn into day time animals to be used in presentations? how does this affect their attitude?
Do you think that you could videotape a demistrashon of yours so some of us who can't go see it in person can still see it?
I wish my cats learned trucks this fast. they still only know tree tricks so far. I definitely want to ty ro get them to walk on my lap for a treat. maybe will help convince them to jump on my lap nor often too
can you train a skunk with a clicker and Lazer pointer to attack?
man animals are so cute :3
Love those claws!
Sweet!
Wow!
Make a video and show us how far her digging has come!
Yay Lollipop!
what does a skunk eat ?
I just had my first interaction today with the skunk at the zoo where I'm interning! He was very flighty because he was left alone all winter to sleep. Clicker training sounds like a great idea- I'll see if I can try it! What treats do you suggest? Also do you ever clip Lollipop's nails? The zoo skunk's nails were crazy long since he hadn't used them all winter.
Is lollipop fixed or something you two have close connection
Hehe cute.
you ever think about going Hollywood and creating your own show on Disney channel
I have always wanted a pet skunk but my state doesn't allow it.
Lollipop is such a cute girl!
Can you train ANY animal or can you mostly just train domestic(ish) ones?
You can train any animal who's behavior can be modified by an external stimulus. So, as long as you're able to find and give a good stimulus after the behavior you want them to do, you can increase the chances that behavior will occur again. Which is what training is. Basically, yes!
How is her digging now?
Do you need to cut her claw? And do you do a training for doing that? 😊
You are dreamy, lady
Does she ever get in bad mood or refuse and start spraying? Or is smelly behavior only when they're afraid?
+Nagarath16 Jessie said in some earlier video (not sure which one - may have even been on a SciShow Talk-show episode) that Lollipop has had her scent glands removed, so she cannot spray... she also explained skunk defense mechanisms - they give several signals (like stomping) before they spray, and only use their spray as a last resort if they feel threatened.
why is lollipop not spraying you ?
So, why is she going back to sleep? Did you wake her up to do this?
yes skunks are nocturnal.
Do they smell even un-threatened?
What have been your easiest and hardest animals to train? And where does Lollipop (or skunks in general) rank?
how does this teach her to dig on demand? woudn't it just teach her to reach into your hand when you put it up?
+Max Fux there are basically two ways to teach an animal a complicated trick. way one is chaining, where the animal does a bunch of known behaviors one after the other, and way two (which is whats going on here) is refining, where you start with a super broad version of the target behavior and slowly refine it into the more complicated version. like, when I taught my dog to balance a treat on her nose, the first version of balance was her letting me hold her nose still gently, and then we got more complicated. you can see jessi refining the behavior already in this video. first lollipop put her paw on jessis hand for the treat, then she has to do both paws, then she has to dig at her hand. eventually jessi will probably require more digging for the treat and then slowly remove her hand until dig just means the digging motion, not hand required.
+maggieedna good to know, and thanks for the answer
Skunks are our best friends ❤
That tail is so floofy!
skunky me like skunky me want to pet it
I want a pet skunk now :(
Can you lay on the couch and cuddle with lollipop or is that something you try not to do with some of the animals?
💝💞
is she descented?
I was wondering if you also have a raccoon with you :) hoping to see one
Why don't you just bury some food in some dirt in a box? And let her dig it up
Big fan of skunks. My mom had one as a pet that was abandoned. I like having them around the yard. They might dig it up, but only if you have grubs and things that you don't want anyhow.
first one
