Worth keeping in mind if you have a DSi you don't need an R4 card, you can homebrew it really easily and it'll run better and have more features than on R4.
I still remember being in high school and someone just randomly gave me an R4 card. I don't remember the guy's face at all, but I'm fairly confident we had never interacted before. My best guess is that he had gotten a replacement recently and saw that I had my 3DS with me and just decided "Yeah, I'll give my old one to this guy." I was completely unfamiliar with this stuff at the time, so I did some research to be sure it wouldn't break my system, confirmed it wouldn't, and ended up using it a good bit. I eventually replaced it with a different flashcard, but I still have that old R4 card. Thank you random guy who I don't think I ever saw again. Lol.
Just a fair warning for the people planning to buy an R4 card There are some out there that have what people call a "timebomb" if you use their "official" kernel This timebomb is meant so the card stops working if the device's date is past a certain date you can bypass this by changing the date on your DS or using a different kernel like YSMenu or TwilightMenu its a moderate inconvenience, but its worth mentioning
I remember these. The cheap R4 card let you use the card for a year before you had to update the firmware. The card would just stop working every September lol.
These R4 cards have existed for many years. I have an old DS stored away with an R4 card that I have not played in many years. I may recheck and see if any new updates work.
Yeah, for me DS games are way better on an actual DS. DS emulators that have you use the mouse or stick for the touch screen just don't feel right. These cards are highly recommended for the DS.
You can use an SD card for most of this stuff I believe, since most of the R4 cards used to have some sort of "timebomb" thing to it that killed the cart past a certain date.
It's great that you mentioned playing Game Boy Advance games through the R4 card, because although the original DS and DS Lite have the Game Boy Advance slot for playing Game Boy Advance games, having the option to play Game Boy Advance games through a Game Boy Advance emulator on the R4 card is an excellent way to experience lots of great Game Boy Advance games... Did I mention I like Game Boy Advance?
I bought those multicart games on ebay for my 3ds xl. Well worth the money but its like 30 good games and 200 crap games. I’m surprised no one hasn’t just sold a cart with everything on it that is pretty simple to use. I keep wanting to mod mine but just keep putting it off, eventually
That card reader is the only thing bad about the r4's. Mine lasted five or so unplugs/uses trying to build the library in my preference. Just use a reader that comes with a digital camera. They do just fine.
I ordered a 200 in 1 cart a year ago and after playing for several months, it seems that it became partially corrupted (cannot see the game titles, just the game logos). I wonder if I can download one of those kernels and revamp my cart.
It can do much more I've pushed my library to the limit and managed to get Chex quest working with a built in file browser to return to regular doom and other games like hexen and scummvm emulator. The hardest part is finding all these long lost files and getting them to somehow work
For a long time I could only do DS homebrew on my 3DS cuz I had a flash cart but the system didn't have CFW, so I could only run emulators and homebrew in DS mode... I gotta say, it felt a fair bit limiting cuz SNES ran so slow, and GBArunner2 wasn't considered safe to use at the time IIRC, so I only really played the 8 bit stuff along with DS and 3DS games at the time, and then I also ran into issues with having both the Master System/Game Gear and PC engine emulators on the flash cart at once had a bad habit of corrupting the SD card, and I lost my frickin' Dragon Quest V save file to that... Gosh, DS homebrew has really come a long way... But I also don't remember having issues with NES emulation on DS, I just largely didn't do it because the sprites were just so frickin' small and flickered so much I had a hard time keeping track of them... I gotta say btw, the best stuff I played when doing emulation on DS was PC Engine, it runs everything at full speed with only minor inaccuracies, has so many great games like Magical Chase, Jackie Chan's Action Kung Fu, Soldier Blade, Street Fighter II and New Adventure Island, plus I think even CD games would run at full speed? I don't know, my SD card was too small to fit in CD games, but that'd get you Castlevania Rondo of Blood (best in the series), and other greats like Gate of Thunder and Asuka 120% Maxima Burning Fest... But I got those on my 3DS now, with more accurate emulators in 3DS mode, so not much reason to go back to DS mode for emulation lol
My current favorite handheld has been a home built Mameboy Advance SP. Always loved ninyendos folding handgelds, could just toss them in a pocket with your keys and noy ve afraid of damaging the screen of wearing the buttons... Of course no company really males folding handhelds, and admittedly the hinge itself adds a huge point of failure. In any case having an RPi Zero hased handheld that fits in my shirt pocket and charges via USB-C has been a dream that i was finally able to acheive with a bit of soldering and case modding. Want to make another one as I know I can do better the second time around, I mean I really hacked up the case to fit in the 2000 mAh battery and no amount of bondo or model paint has been able to make the underside particularly pretty.

Keep up the DS videos!

yup, i had one in high school like 10 years ago

i bought an r4 card at the start of covid and that was the best $14 i ever spent
Great video @GravelWare To the point. Recently picked up a DS Lite and its really good to have these videos in 2023

I didn't even realize how many times I said it until I was editing the video 😂
I have controlled my computer using my Nintendo DS Lite once.
I want an old console and hack the hell out of it, and these videos keep popping lol
Been using one since back in the day (2008). Still works 👍
Oh yes I remeber I emulat some of my PC Engine and Turbografx CD Roms on my DS..... Nostalgic Vibes
Like frfr no cap 😂😂😂

From the uk here i really liked your video i have liked and subd i hope your channel grows keep doing videos like this.

Wow ! That is kind of interesting and serene
우와 ! 흥미롭고 평화롭네요
What was the golf game you were playing at 9:00? Thanks
You left out NetHack DS which was still getting updates up to 2020.

If I’ve already got a jailbroken new 3ds xl, should I worry about doing it for my dsi?
I always laugh at the year being used in the marketing for these cards. I’m still using a twelve year old Acekard 2i in my 3DS
Rip my 3DS R4i Gold clone and Ace3ds X cart
Try setting your system clock back to when you got your card..
5:11 u need the thumb stylus, i think the lanyard has one built in
Hi, how can I get the R4 interface like the one in your video?
What-If Super Smash Flash 2 and AM2R in NDS R4

Is it possible to port the original super smash bros to the ds
M3izero still going strong 💪
Went to the website and saw the name of the person behind it and found there ebay may buy one from there
There should be a homebrew of Metroid: Dread that was SUPPOSED to be on the DS, not the freakin' Switch.
What GBA emulator do you use?
Gbarunner2
Can you use normal adapter
you do not need RCI card in 2023, I have DSi flashed using only SD card 😊
DSP and DSL don't have SD Slots. Wish they did though...
You play FPS perfectly with your thumb! Not with the stylus!
