PSA: If struggling with DPS against Vanstrom, try getting a Vampyres slayer task and using your slayer helm/black mask, as the damage and accuracy bonuses will work.
Exactly! I can do phase 1 in my sleep but I spent 7 hours not getting past phase 2 due to shit weapon, lack of time to heal before next lightning or he hits. Idk if I panic and that ruins it, or if the ping on my world really does affect it. Like I fully understand how to get past phase 2 but so far easier said than done.
I have plently of food but if I try to hit him im taking the 40 damage lighting hit and ID cant heal fast enough to stay close if its comes down to ping or speed well then it wont happen for me ever.
Thanks for the guide! Just did it on my 3rd try. What helped me the most: 1. He won't use the same special attack twice in a row. 2. Wait about 10 seconds from his last special attack and start turning away from him in between your hits (if he hasn't used his 'darkness' attack yet, will help you avoid a ton of damage) 3. Right before you finish his 1st phase, heal to full and use an Anglerfish for the extra hp. Make sure your prayer is full and finish him off. 4. Stay calm during the 2nd phase, I had to focus strictly on my tile position and not pay much attention to anything else. You won't take much damage if you don't get hit with lightning. Click away from where the lightning lands, then click to eat food. Don't pay attention to his HP bar, it will go down as long as you keep attacking. Use Chivalry/Piety. GL to all, don't get discouraged, you can do it!
Here's a huge tip that helped me massively: he will never use the same spec back to back. After you get the _Stare into the darkness_ special, you're safe to smash face until after his next special. Pretty much the same thing as what everyone else said: knives set to long and flick him to avoid the darkness special. Also helps if you down an Angler at the Rott bank before going into the fight.
My personal guide to beating Vanstrom: When I beat him I had 96 Combat, 70 prayer, 75 attack, 76 strength, 75 defense (Took 4 tries, one I got him down to 12 before running out of food) For my kit I ran Verac's Helm, Karil's leatherbody and leatherskirt, barrows gloves, dragon boots, amulet of fury, berserker ring, dragon defender, and an imbued saradomin cape (I haven't done the fight caves yet). For my inventory I ran 24 manta rays, 1 super combat potion (4), and two super regens (4) for restoring prayer, these give you more prayer points back than regular prayer pots. During the first phase pray piety and mage. When fighting Angstrom I used the pattern of letting him attack, I attack him and then immediately turning around, this is to avoid the darkness special attack. I found it harder to constantly count how many moves he has done to avoid darkness, so I just avoid after each attack so darkness is no longer an issue. Vanstrom will never use darkness as his special attack twice in a row, so once he uses it you can don't have to turn around after each attack until he uses his next special attack. Luring him into the blood is worth it every time, make sure you stay at least two tiles away from the orb and lead him into it. When dealing with his summon I just bring 50 amethyst darts (you don't need that many and you can also use rune darts) to kill them. The attempt I finally beat Vanstrom I didn't waste any food on the summon, darkness, or the orb. Getting hit by any of these and wasting food led to me loosing in the long run. When you get to the second phase only pray piety, praying melee has no affect. Easiest method is to zoom in as far as you can on your character and focus on your health/prayer and if any lightning is spawning under you. Don't look at Vanstrom's health, keep your cool and focus on your health/prayer and if you need to move. The attempt I finally beat him I got extremely lucky hitting him 3 times in a row in the very beginning, this was a big confidence boost as this flail is fucking terrible. Having as much food as possible is how you win this fight, make sure you avoid his phase 1 attacks and keep your cool with his second phase, good luck.
I just did this on my iron with 80 combats. I initially went with melee strength tank gear, but soon realised magic defence is much more necessary since he shreds through your food otherwise. I'd recommend to everyone to use (blessed) d'hide + melle strength off peices + super potions + piety always. On the Darkness ability, its quicker to run through him than turn around, and the mini bloodveld use knives with long range, and the blood orbs are quite worth dragging him in as it buffs his damage and also deals around 35 to him.
For anyone struggling .. I finally beat it after my 10th or 12th try lmao Att - 80 Str - 80 Def - 77 Hp - 79 Range - 61 Magic - 70 Pray - 70 Equipment - dragon defender, neitz helm, fury, void, dragon boots, berserker ring, red d'hide braces, obsidian cape, flail Turn the hd plugin off. Have auto-retaliate off for the entire fight. Piety prayer makes this fight 10x easier and 10x faster. Pray magic for first part of fight, pray melee for the lightning round. Before I used piety I was shredding through food like crazy. Definitely did the flinching method to avoid his darkness attack. Whenever his animation starts, walk away and then attack again. Walk into the fight with pray magic and piety on. My inventory was 3 prayer potions, 1 super attack, 1 super strength, 1 super defence and rune knives (for bloodveld), the rest manta rays. For the blood orbs, lure him into them. They’ll attack you if you get close (3 squares around it) so run around them and wait for him to walk into it. For the bloodveld, quickly switch to knives (set to long range) and run away so it doesn’t explode near you. Switch back to flail then attack him again and keep flinching. Darkness attack - if you flinch it right (his animation should start and you should walk away) you wont get hit. flinching the entire fight helps to never get too close to getting hit. This was key to maintaining hp and not wasting food. He does the special attacks like every 10 hits so you can count for that too. Lightning round: pray melee and keep using piety. you really have to pay attention to the ground and where it hits but also your food and pray. I’d recommend going to a world with less people so your ping is good and you don’t lag because it happens FAST. This was the part of the fight I died the most on. Believe me you guys can do it, it just takes some practice and getting used to the fight! Good luck! :)
A good tip for the lightning/darkness. Instead of auto attacking, turn off auto retaliate, and flinch the boss and look away while not attacking. This helps for lightning phase as you're already moving anyways, and negates the damage from the darkness spec.
77 Atk, 75 Str, 71 Def, 60 pray -- Helmet of Neitiznot / D'hide torso and legs / Obsidian cape / Fury and Zerker ring 3 Prayer potions, 1 Super Combat Potion, 20 Black knives, 22 Manta rays Before the fight: Drink a divine combat potion, then eat a lobster and an angler fish to overheal before the fight. Sprint from bank to the fight. Make sure your knives are set to Longrange. Upon entering immediately turn on magic pray and your strength boost of choice. I only had Ultimate Strength unlocked. For those who can't dodge Darkness: You want to count how many times he hits you inbetween special attacks. Keep in mind he never uses Darkness twice in a row. He usually special attacks after (except at the very start) 10 regular attacks, so when you have counted to 8, turn around and let him hit you until he uses his next special attack. It's better to tank a few regular hits than 1 Darkness. If he uses Darkness then you don't need to count again, because the next attack will be something else. For those who get hit by the pig: Try to stand in the middle of the room. If you react withing 1-2 sec you should be able to throw knives at the pig from a safe distance. If you're a bit slower on the weapon-switch just sprint in the opposite direction to gain some distance. For those who struggle on the blood spawn: Just run behind the bloodspawns to lure the boss into them. He will take a lot of damage. The bloodspawns trick you, because it looks like they have a 1-tile hitbox but they have a 3-tile hitbox, so take a long route around them. Better safe than sorry. For those who struggle with lightning phase: Remember to switch to Melee-pray. Only focus on the tile directly beneath you and keep your mouse hovered on the next tile to run away. When a shadow appears beneath you have about 1 second to react and run away. Keep auto-retaliate off. After failing twice using just regular monkfish I switched to this method I managed to get him on my 1st try. I had a full prayer pot and 3 manta rays left. Good luck! :)
I died to him maybe 10 times until I read this comment. Key highlights that helped me: 75 Atk, 75 Str, 70 Def, 70pray -- Helmet of Neitiznot / D'hide torso and legs / Ardy Cape / Fury and Warriors ring BEFORE THE FIGHT: Using the divine combat potion + overheal was a great tip, I initially tried with regular combat potions INVENTORY: I used 8 sets of Manta + Karambwan combos (and the rest were just Mantas+Pray Pots). This really helped heal me back up quickly when I made a mistake (if hit by lightning or darkness I could 1-tick heal to full). DO NOT USE SARABREWS as a low/med level. You should have enough food left with just mantas/karambwans and the most important part is for you to have QUICK burst heal for mistakes. Also, Sarabrews add to the confusion of needing to restore stats and you lose your combat boost. DURING FIGHT: Used Piety, I tried a few times with just overheads because I thought prayer would be an issue but only used 2 prayer potions of the 4 I brought even with piety. Auto-retaliate off for the full fight, it made me run into the bloodspawn when you're trying to lure him. Love the tip to count his hits and turn and tank a few to avoid Darkness, it's IMPOSSIBLE to dodge once you see the text appear, don't even try. Thanks for these tips!
This comment was a great help, I didn't realize his attacks in first phase did so much damage because of my gear and he almost didn't damage me the whole time when I switched to Karil's. Coming to phase 2 with full inventory of food was unbelievable help, while before I was at 3-4 mantas and 2 brews. For me a strategy on P2 was to always be on lookout for a safe tile around Klaus, because I was unable to see the shadow under my char, so having a safe tile at all times did wonders. Melee prayer didn't seem to help, so I just kept Piety on to save a bit of hassle on restoring prayer.
WTF, how you define low? I am almost maxed and still cant do this boss in 6 tries. Hitting me on lightning phase constantly for 10 with his normal attack.

The lightning bolts were a pain. I'd move away, then step in a spot where they were coming the second time then get hit, move and it'd happen again and it'd take insane damage lol. This guide helped me beat him though
Just a tip that help me huge! When your fighting him let him attack you first the you attack that way you always miss the shade attack bc by the time you hit him you can see the darkness and actually have the time to turn around and also one thing I noticed he wont throw shade 2 times in a row meaning he will throw shade then either throw red orb or the animal but either way after he throws the shade I would just straight attack him after and I would not do the hit and run until I seen him cast one of the other spells then after that you can count on after a few more attack he will be throwing shade so make sure he hits you first then attack turn around let him hit and soon as he hits make sure your hitting him and turning right back around until after shade. Rinse repeat hope that could help someone. Edit also in the lightning phase only pay attention to the square your on. Say if you see lightning on the one your standing on step off that tile then go back on it bc alot of the times it wont be lightning again. But its not for sure! I had it kill me a couple times not paying attention to see if it was lightning again before stepping back on.
I have tried this fight around 10 times. I'm not sure if its all of the rendered polygons or what exactly it is, but I'm getting a ridiculous amount of lag when I fight him. I can get to the second phase easily at this point, but I can not for the life of me move out of his lightning attack on time. I have good internet, but an mmo based boss where you have to dodge in a split second is not a well designed boss imo. Love the new quests Jagex has come out with, but hate the boss fights.
I fn did it on my 3rd try! didn't have peity on the first two, but oh what a difference it makes, worth taking the time to get that. Did it with Nezi helm, blessed d hide and d defender, what a rush!
Okay after about 8 attempts I finally did it! 75 att, def, str hp, 61 range, 70 pray. My gear was full red dhide, fury, zerker ring, d boots. Inv was 2 super combats, 4 super restores, 1 brew (didn't need), Manta rays for food. I prayed Magic/peity the whole fight and Melee/piety for last phase. Super combat when my stats fell below 88 (personal pref, but wanted to high higher and more frequent)...THE GAME CHANGER was flinching EVERY single hit...Once you attack, just take a step back... It may have just been me, but it felt like my attacks were hitting higher and more frequent when I flinched. It also helped me avoid every single darkness attack. By the time the last phase hit, I had a full super combat, 2 full super restos and half my inv of food left. When he is entering his last phase take that downtime to re-pot your combat and restos and look only at the square you are standing on to avoid his lighting (dont forget to switch to protect from melee as well). Had about 15 sharks and some karambwans left at the start of the second stage, didn't get hit by the lightning once, and still ran out of food because it keeps hitting me for 10 every 5 seconds??? Im combat lvl 94?
Not sure about that - this is from the wiki: The mask has a passive ability to lower an attacking monsters Defence by 2 + 7% rounded down, and use one charge in the process. In order for the mask to activate the following requirement must be met. - NPC must attack the player - NPC must be within 10 tiles - NPC must have 50% health or more. - NPC must not have reduced defence already. Then it rolls your magic accuracy vs the NPC's magic defence.Once the mask has been drained of all 10 charges, there is no way to recharge it.

He uses a special attack approximately everytime he hits 10 times so when he hits you about 6-8 times start flinching him without auto retaliate and wait with your back turned in between his attacks and you can avoid it everytime if you're attentive

I just beat vanstrom on my third try. I died to the blood blowing up the first time then lightning the second time. In lightning phase I ran out of food every time. For the blood I just tanked it because when I did try to lure him over it blew up and I died. I didn’t take much damage during this phase anyways My stats are 82 ATT, 82 str, 76 def, 81 hp, 101 combat Gear: Bandos top, Karil bottom, dragon defender, dragon boots, ammy of torture, blood moon helm, rada’s blessing for prayer +1 Quick prayers protect from magic & piety, turn on as soon as I get in there. When he turns into a cloud to go to phase 2 I immediately turn on protect from melee Inventory: rune knives, 3 prayer pots, 24 manta rays. I used super combat pot in Burgh de rott then ran to boss battle. Didn’t worry about teleport out, it was only 50k to get my stuff back I ate and used prayer pot every time I could in case I messed up and got hit (I got hit a few times during lightning but my hp was up high). I got lucky when I had 14 hp left and no food I did a last hit that was high damage and it finished him off
Well there’s a bit of that to every boss you kill in this game. I’m just advising to count the attacks until they get near 10 for the phase so you don’t take a 50 to the face or plank 😊
I defeated fragment of seren in 3 attempts. just died on my 15th vanstrom attempt :( I swear I finished night at the theater easier than this! Sins of the father should be rated grandmaster imo. my heart starts beating so fast I misclick or lose track of pray/ hp when dodging the lightning lol. I'll try to bring some 1 tick food (karambwan) in future attempts as it seems the final phase divides my attention so much it's hard to keep track and perhaps the karambwan can let me quickly outpace Vanstrom's dps. My own fault I guess as I am trying to get a low level quest cape. 87cb lol. I'm a lover not a fighter, just like questing
Dude, I feel it... I'm so bad at understanding how dmg is calculated in this game. Still cant beat Jad cuz I hate prayer switching and I'm usually 1 tick off and get one shot.

What do you mean the darkness is every 10 attacks? I've tried counting every time I'm hit, every time I'm hit including 0's and every special attack. Doesn't seem to correlate to any, what am I missing?
Quest is literally impossible. 75 attack, 79 strength, 75 Def with piety and I am failing every. Single. Time. Due to lack of hits and getting stacked out by the lightning. I swear to God this is THE hardest boss fight in all of OSRS. Glough and Galvek are so easy compared to this.
render yourself invisible by :renderself or use the runelite entity hider plugin. This makes it really easy to see the lightning under you, just be sure to have the tile marker indicator on
Just killed the boss on my HC with 2 Food left (was already hovering teletab, also safe ate alot to keep me at max health (hc safety), posting my stats and gear for future reference for other (HC) ironmans that want to try the boss: 92 Str 76 Att 75 Def 80 Magic 70 Pray with Piety Helm of Neitiznot, Glory, Ardy Cloak 2, Dragon Defender, Black Dhide Body & Chaps Barrows Gloves, Ranger boots, Blessing, Ring of Life, Dragon Knifes Drank Super Potions in Burg de Rott to get more space for food, then (re)started the fight. 3 Prayer Potions, 1 tele, rest was Sharks and Karambwans.

I'm struggling with this fight, particularly with the second phase. I find myself with plenty of food and pots for the second phase but his attacks are accurate even with prayer on and I keep getting hit with lightning when trying to heal. Fk Vanstrom.
Went at him with base 70 combats, black d'hide, glory, neitz. Gotten him to 15hp 3 times out of 5 attempts. Infuriating how much I've noodled when he's under 20hp....
Finally killed Vanstrom after 10+ tries with 79 att, 80 str, 78 def, 70 prayer in full karil, dragon defender, dragon boots, dragon gloves. 1 super combat pot, 4 super restore, manta and karambwan. Had a very bad dps during the 1st phase but was lucky with the lighting phase as dps was really good
Very helpful guide really! So I just need to play the game for 5-10 years to get max combat stats, full Bandos and access to brews. Then I just ignore all the mechanics and brute force my way through. Got it. Thank you, really great early midgame boss guide. Really helpful. not really people have done it with less than 90 combat. What you really need is high magic so his magic attacks barely hit u and high HP and strength also helps but using a super combat makes the fight easy
No lie I’ve tried this boss 13 times already and still no luck. I’ve got him to less than 10hp three times, but I was one hit from dying so I teled out. All other times were all second phase and his hp would be less than 100 before I’d tele out. 65atk,65str,67def… going to try again once I upgrade my black d hides to Kharils armour perhaps

Went with blessed dhide top, pants, coif, granite gloves, unholy book, dragon boots, warrior ring (i), blessing and imbued zamorak cape. This stupid shitty nonsense harder boss was harder than going to zulrah, took me about 30-50 attempts.
The meta may have changed since this video (which was on release of the quest). Yeah, pray mage for the first phase and then melee for the second phase.
even with bandos / fury / avernic / fire cape and piety i hit so many 0s when he was low health on the second phase. i have died like 4 times so far. :(
If you can beat this fight while running head first into all the blood pools you probably don't need a guide tbh. That's like 120+ unnecessary hp damage.

You don't need to be - I was just max combat at the time when the quest came out. There's more RNG involved with lower stats but you will get there in the end if you deal with the mechanics as tidily as possible.
The ring of recoil/suffering does not work. I'm not sure about vengeance, I can't find anywhere that it doesn't work - so you could test it perhaps and try to time it when he does the darkness attack.
ok so took me weeks to kill the boss so i got 70 attk then on the lightening phase i took rune armour because im only 42 def, that helped allot with his melle attcks, i can now dodge every lightening strike because i zoomed right into my charactar and each time i saw that shadow i just moved, before i got 70 attack it took me like about 20-30 tries, my stats are 70 attack 74 strength 42 defence 77 hp, combat level 82, full d hide and rune armour i took, (DO NOT use brews on lightening phase because youll have to restore then sip a super combat pot and youll obv have to look away while doing this, my invent was 6 brews 4 restores darts rune helm and body the rest was angler fish and kawarmbans, this will help!! DONT USE BREWS ON LIGHTENING PHASE :) all this for black graceful loool madness
Wow took me 6 goes when it came to the lightning I stood there like Zeus and absorbed every shock 😂 seriously though I was about to throw my dayum phone at the wall, hence why I went superman mode. I was chowing down mantra rays like I was in a eating competition. Thankfully it's over woo hoo
I just tried to do it on mobile right now and I got him to less than 100 on the first phase but I died. it seems so easy in the vids because theyre max levelled and i tried with medium level combat stats (72 atk, 76 magic, 70 def and strenght, and 60 prayer)
True, of course I've got maxed melee so that makes a difference. I still felt overall the fight was quite RNG based with how inaccurate the flail is. I think at lower levels, as long as you avoid the special attacks that deplete hp rapidly, it can be done.
@@SWH980 I found the 1st phase super easy, even though I suck at dodging the attacks and get hit like 3 times by the special attacks. the second phase is the one i struggle with because they hit too much and i dont heal fast enough.
@@jkml68 I got 70 att, def, prayer, range. Using piety and pfm, I must just be getting old, my reflexes aren't as quick. Plus on mobile you have to double click on everything to degree because you have to set auto retaliate off.
This boss is actually the worst in the game. Either rework it so: 1. The flail hits like a truck 2. Give him less hp 3. Let us use anything but the flail

The most infuriating part about this fight is that every attempt I need to use up more food, more super combat potions, more prayer potions, and if I die, I have to spend 50k just to get my shit back. Having to sink my entire fucking bank into just ATTEMPTS is not fucking fun. I wouldn't even care if it didn't cost anything, but it fucking does.

Sounds like you're almost there! Try to make sure you're not getting whacked 50s by the darkness, that certainly helps. The flail is very inaccurate so hopefully you'll get some better luck soon.

I've just finished making my first sentinel alt, 70 strength, 70 attack, 60 defence, killed Vanstrom in blue d'hides, fury, regen, zerker ring, manacles, d defender. Focus on the mechanics, it's really not that hard.
Good job doing this boss at 99 in all melee, great way to show unexperienced players how to beat this boss. "Go spend a couple hundred hours grinding and do this quest after"
I uploaded this on release so there wasn’t really a way to do that. Besides, the mechanics are exactly the same regardless of what stats you have, the fight will just take longer.

Contrary to the video, I find the lightning the hardest part. It hits so fast you barely have enough time to click off your spot on the correct tick.

Idk if I panic and that ruins it, or if the ping on my world really does affect it. Like I fully understand how to get past phase 2 but so far easier said than done.
I have plently of food but if I try to hit him im taking the 40 damage lighting hit and ID cant heal fast enough to stay close if its comes down to ping or speed well then it wont happen for me ever.
Thanks for the guide! Just did it on my 3rd try. What helped me the most:
1. He won't use the same special attack twice in a row.
2. Wait about 10 seconds from his last special attack and start turning away from him in between your hits (if he hasn't used his 'darkness' attack yet, will help you avoid a ton of damage)
3. Right before you finish his 1st phase, heal to full and use an Anglerfish for the extra hp. Make sure your prayer is full and finish him off.
4. Stay calm during the 2nd phase, I had to focus strictly on my tile position and not pay much attention to anything else. You won't take much damage if you don't get hit with lightning. Click away from where the lightning lands, then click to eat food. Don't pay attention to his HP bar, it will go down as long as you keep attacking. Use Chivalry/Piety.
GL to all, don't get discouraged, you can do it!
Here's a huge tip that helped me massively: he will never use the same spec back to back. After you get the _Stare into the darkness_ special, you're safe to smash face until after his next special. Pretty much the same thing as what everyone else said: knives set to long and flick him to avoid the darkness special. Also helps if you down an Angler at the Rott bank before going into the fight.

My personal guide to beating Vanstrom: When I beat him I had 96 Combat, 70 prayer, 75 attack, 76 strength, 75 defense (Took 4 tries, one I got him down to 12 before running out of food)
For my kit I ran Verac's Helm, Karil's leatherbody and leatherskirt, barrows gloves, dragon boots, amulet of fury, berserker ring, dragon defender, and an imbued saradomin cape (I haven't done the fight caves yet). For my inventory I ran 24 manta rays, 1 super combat potion (4), and two super regens (4) for restoring prayer, these give you more prayer points back than regular prayer pots.
During the first phase pray piety and mage. When fighting Angstrom I used the pattern of letting him attack, I attack him and then immediately turning around, this is to avoid the darkness special attack. I found it harder to constantly count how many moves he has done to avoid darkness, so I just avoid after each attack so darkness is no longer an issue. Vanstrom will never use darkness as his special attack twice in a row, so once he uses it you can don't have to turn around after each attack until he uses his next special attack. Luring him into the blood is worth it every time, make sure you stay at least two tiles away from the orb and lead him into it. When dealing with his summon I just bring 50 amethyst darts (you don't need that many and you can also use rune darts) to kill them. The attempt I finally beat Vanstrom I didn't waste any food on the summon, darkness, or the orb. Getting hit by any of these and wasting food led to me loosing in the long run.
When you get to the second phase only pray piety, praying melee has no affect. Easiest method is to zoom in as far as you can on your character and focus on your health/prayer and if any lightning is spawning under you. Don't look at Vanstrom's health, keep your cool and focus on your health/prayer and if you need to move. The attempt I finally beat him I got extremely lucky hitting him 3 times in a row in the very beginning, this was a big confidence boost as this flail is fucking terrible. Having as much food as possible is how you win this fight, make sure you avoid his phase 1 attacks and keep your cool with his second phase, good luck.
And praying mage

I just did this on my iron with 80 combats. I initially went with melee strength tank gear, but soon realised magic defence is much more necessary since he shreds through your food otherwise. I'd recommend to everyone to use (blessed) d'hide + melle strength off peices + super potions + piety always. On the Darkness ability, its quicker to run through him than turn around, and the mini bloodveld use knives with long range, and the blood orbs are quite worth dragging him in as it buffs his damage and also deals around 35 to him.

Turn the hd plugin off. Have auto-retaliate off for the entire fight. Piety prayer makes this fight 10x easier and 10x faster. Pray magic for first part of fight, pray melee for the lightning round.
Before I used piety I was shredding through food like crazy. Definitely did the flinching method to avoid his darkness attack. Whenever his animation starts, walk away and then attack again.
Walk into the fight with pray magic and piety on. My inventory was 3 prayer potions, 1 super attack, 1 super strength, 1 super defence and rune knives (for bloodveld), the rest manta rays.
For the blood orbs, lure him into them. They’ll attack you if you get close (3 squares around it) so run around them and wait for him to walk into it.
For the bloodveld, quickly switch to knives (set to long range) and run away so it doesn’t explode near you. Switch back to flail then attack him again and keep flinching.
Darkness attack - if you flinch it right (his animation should start and you should walk away) you wont get hit. flinching the entire fight helps to never get too close to getting hit. This was key to maintaining hp and not wasting food.
He does the special attacks like every 10 hits so you can count for that too.
Lightning round: pray melee and keep using piety. you really have to pay attention to the ground and where it hits but also your food and pray. I’d recommend going to a world with less people so your ping is good and you don’t lag because it happens FAST. This was the part of the fight I died the most on.
Believe me you guys can do it, it just takes some practice and getting used to the fight! Good luck! :)
A good tip for the lightning/darkness. Instead of auto attacking, turn off auto retaliate, and flinch the boss and look away while not attacking. This helps for lightning phase as you're already moving anyways, and negates the damage from the darkness spec.

3 Prayer potions, 1 Super Combat Potion, 20 Black knives, 22 Manta rays
Before the fight: Drink a divine combat potion, then eat a lobster and an angler fish to overheal before the fight. Sprint from bank to the fight. Make sure your knives are set to Longrange. Upon entering immediately turn on magic pray and your strength boost of choice. I only had Ultimate Strength unlocked.
For those who can't dodge Darkness: You want to count how many times he hits you inbetween special attacks. Keep in mind he never uses Darkness twice in a row. He usually special attacks after (except at the very start) 10 regular attacks, so when you have counted to 8, turn around and let him hit you until he uses his next special attack. It's better to tank a few regular hits than 1 Darkness. If he uses Darkness then you don't need to count again, because the next attack will be something else.
For those who get hit by the pig: Try to stand in the middle of the room. If you react withing 1-2 sec you should be able to throw knives at the pig from a safe distance. If you're a bit slower on the weapon-switch just sprint in the opposite direction to gain some distance.
For those who struggle on the blood spawn: Just run behind the bloodspawns to lure the boss into them. He will take a lot of damage. The bloodspawns trick you, because it looks like they have a 1-tile hitbox but they have a 3-tile hitbox, so take a long route around them. Better safe than sorry.
For those who struggle with lightning phase: Remember to switch to Melee-pray. Only focus on the tile directly beneath you and keep your mouse hovered on the next tile to run away. When a shadow appears beneath you have about 1 second to react and run away. Keep auto-retaliate off.
After failing twice using just regular monkfish I switched to this method I managed to get him on my 1st try. I had a full prayer pot and 3 manta rays left. Good luck! :)
I died to him maybe 10 times until I read this comment. Key highlights that helped me:

BEFORE THE FIGHT:
Using the divine combat potion + overheal was a great tip, I initially tried with regular combat potions
INVENTORY:
I used 8 sets of Manta + Karambwan combos (and the rest were just Mantas+Pray Pots). This really helped heal me back up quickly when I made a mistake (if hit by lightning or darkness I could 1-tick heal to full). DO NOT USE SARABREWS as a low/med level. You should have enough food left with just mantas/karambwans and the most important part is for you to have QUICK burst heal for mistakes. Also, Sarabrews add to the confusion of needing to restore stats and you lose your combat boost.
DURING FIGHT:
Used Piety, I tried a few times with just overheads because I thought prayer would be an issue but only used 2 prayer potions of the 4 I brought even with piety.
Auto-retaliate off for the full fight, it made me run into the bloodspawn when you're trying to lure him.
Love the tip to count his hits and turn and tank a few to avoid Darkness, it's IMPOSSIBLE to dodge once you see the text appear, don't even try.

This comment was a great help, I didn't realize his attacks in first phase did so much damage because of my gear and he almost didn't damage me the whole time when I switched to Karil's. Coming to phase 2 with full inventory of food was unbelievable help, while before I was at 3-4 mantas and 2 brews. For me a strategy on P2 was to always be on lookout for a safe tile around Klaus, because I was unable to see the shadow under my char, so having a safe tile at all times did wonders. Melee prayer didn't seem to help, so I just kept Piety on to save a bit of hassle on restoring prayer.

Just a tip that help me huge! When your fighting him let him attack you first the you attack that way you always miss the shade attack bc by the time you hit him you can see the darkness and actually have the time to turn around and also one thing I noticed he wont throw shade 2 times in a row meaning he will throw shade then either throw red orb or the animal but either way after he throws the shade I would just straight attack him after and I would not do the hit and run until I seen him cast one of the other spells then after that you can count on after a few more attack he will be throwing shade so make sure he hits you first then attack turn around let him hit and soon as he hits make sure your hitting him and turning right back around until after shade. Rinse repeat hope that could help someone. Edit also in the lightning phase only pay attention to the square your on. Say if you see lightning on the one your standing on step off that tile then go back on it bc alot of the times it wont be lightning again. But its not for sure! I had it kill me a couple times not paying attention to see if it was lightning again before stepping back on.

I have tried this fight around 10 times. I'm not sure if its all of the rendered polygons or what exactly it is, but I'm getting a ridiculous amount of lag when I fight him. I can get to the second phase easily at this point, but I can not for the life of me move out of his lightning attack on time. I have good internet, but an mmo based boss where you have to dodge in a split second is not a well designed boss imo. Love the new quests Jagex has come out with, but hate the boss fights.

Okay after about 8 attempts I finally did it! 75 att, def, str hp, 61 range, 70 pray. My gear was full red dhide, fury, zerker ring, d boots. Inv was 2 super combats, 4 super restores, 1 brew (didn't need), Manta rays for food. I prayed Magic/peity the whole fight and Melee/piety for last phase. Super combat when my stats fell below 88 (personal pref, but wanted to high higher and more frequent)...THE GAME CHANGER was flinching EVERY single hit...Once you attack, just take a step back... It may have just been me, but it felt like my attacks were hitting higher and more frequent when I flinched. It also helped me avoid every single darkness attack. By the time the last phase hit, I had a full super combat, 2 full super restos and half my inv of food left. When he is entering his last phase take that downtime to re-pot your combat and restos and look only at the square you are standing on to avoid his lighting (dont forget to switch to protect from melee as well). Hope it helps, good luck!

Does the black mask (10) effect work on the boss? Not the damage/accuracy boost but the effect
Not sure about that - this is from the wiki:
The mask has a passive ability to lower an attacking monsters Defence by 2 + 7% rounded down, and use one charge in the process. In order for the mask to activate the following requirement must be met.
- NPC must attack the player
- NPC must be within 10 tiles
- NPC must have 50% health or more.
- NPC must not have reduced defence already.
Then it rolls your magic accuracy vs the NPC's magic defence.Once the mask has been drained of all 10 charges, there is no way to recharge it.
For me I could not believe he can be damaged by his own blood spells... That tip turned it for me. barely made it, thanks!

The darkness is also impossible to avoid. You either avoid it or you somehow can't avoid it even though your timing was the same. Like wtf.
Yeah it's annoyingly inconstent and you have to basically have be tick-perfect.
He uses a special attack approximately everytime he hits 10 times so when he hits you about 6-8 times start flinching him without auto retaliate and wait with your back turned in between his attacks and you can avoid it everytime if you're attentive
I found it helps to step away at attack 8 of 10. It's better to lose a bit of dpr in order to avoid the darkness hit.

I just beat vanstrom on my third try. I died to the blood blowing up the first time then lightning the second time. In lightning phase I ran out of food every time. For the blood I just tanked it because when I did try to lure him over it blew up and I died. I didn’t take much damage during this phase anyways

Gear: Bandos top, Karil bottom, dragon defender, dragon boots, ammy of torture, blood moon helm, rada’s blessing for prayer +1
Quick prayers protect from magic & piety, turn on as soon as I get in there. When he turns into a cloud to go to phase 2 I immediately turn on protect from melee
Inventory: rune knives, 3 prayer pots, 24 manta rays. I used super combat pot in Burgh de rott then ran to boss battle. Didn’t worry about teleport out, it was only 50k to get my stuff back
I ate and used prayer pot every time I could in case I messed up and got hit (I got hit a few times during lightning but my hp was up high). I got lucky when I had 14 hp left and no food I did a last hit that was high damage and it finished him off

Well there’s a bit of that to every boss you kill in this game. I’m just advising to count the attacks until they get near 10 for the phase so you don’t take a 50 to the face or plank 😊

I defeated fragment of seren in 3 attempts. just died on my 15th vanstrom attempt :( I swear I finished night at the theater easier than this! Sins of the father should be rated grandmaster imo. my heart starts beating so fast I misclick or lose track of pray/ hp when dodging the lightning lol. I'll try to bring some 1 tick food (karambwan) in future attempts as it seems the final phase divides my attention so much it's hard to keep track and perhaps the karambwan can let me quickly outpace Vanstrom's dps.
My own fault I guess as I am trying to get a low level quest cape. 87cb lol. I'm a lover not a fighter, just like questing

At the beginning of the fight, it varies. After the first special attack he uses, it's then every 10 attacks. Perhaps count to 7-8 and then move away?
in my defence with the darkness happening, just hit him and run through him, even if you hit a zero, so that youre always facing away from him

Quest is literally impossible. 75 attack, 79 strength, 75 Def with piety and I am failing every. Single. Time. Due to lack of hits and getting stacked out by the lightning. I swear to God this is THE hardest boss fight in all of OSRS. Glough and Galvek are so easy compared to this.

render yourself invisible by :renderself or use the runelite entity hider plugin. This makes it really easy to see the lightning under you, just be sure to have the tile marker indicator on

Well I did it. After about 10 attempts I finally got his ass bout 20 minutes ago.
I'm struggling with this fight, particularly with the second phase. I find myself with plenty of food and pots for the second phase but his attacks are accurate even with prayer on and I keep getting hit with lightning when trying to heal. Fk Vanstrom.
Try to constantly move in the second phase and not stay on the same tile for more than a few seconds. Watch the shadows carefully. Good luck :)

Finally killed Vanstrom after 10+ tries with 79 att, 80 str, 78 def, 70 prayer in full karil, dragon defender, dragon boots, dragon gloves. 1 super combat pot, 4 super restore, manta and karambwan.
Had a very bad dps during the 1st phase but was lucky with the lighting phase as dps was really good

not really people have done it with less than 90 combat. What you really need is high magic so his magic attacks barely hit u and high HP and strength also helps but using a super combat makes the fight easy

No lie I’ve tried this boss 13 times already and still no luck. I’ve got him to less than 10hp three times, but I was one hit from dying so I teled out. I'm lvl 91 combat and I just beat it with red d'hide body and chaps, amulet of fury, helm of neitiznot, brimstone ring, god book, blessing, dragon boots, barrows gloves, fire cape, 2 prayer portions, divine super combat potion, and the rest manta rays

Went with blessed dhide top, pants, coif, granite gloves, unholy book, dragon boots, warrior ring (i), blessing and imbued zamorak cape. This stupid shitty nonsense harder boss was harder than going to zulrah, took me about 30-50 attempts.

The meta may have changed since this video (which was on release of the quest). Yeah, pray mage for the first phase and then melee for the second phase.
even with bandos / fury / avernic / fire cape and piety i hit so many 0s when he was low health on the second phase. i have died like 4 times so far. :(
i just died cause of my shadows being too high in the hd plugin, i could barely see the lightning area's

If you can beat this fight while running head first into all the blood pools you probably don't need a guide tbh. That's like 120+ unnecessary hp damage.
Do I have to be max level for this boss? 78 attk 75str 75def. Got karil head and bottom, ancient d"hide boots and chest, fury neck, barrowsgloves, imbued magic cape, brimstone ring, war blessing .
You don't need to be - I was just max combat at the time when the quest came out. There's more RNG involved with lower stats but you will get there in the end if you deal with the mechanics as tidily as possible.
God, I’m so infuriated, first the fight caves and now, this. Absolutely fuckin impossible boss fights. Guess I’ll be a noob forever.
Does suffering/venge work?
The ring of recoil/suffering does not work. I'm not sure about vengeance, I can't find anywhere that it doesn't work - so you could test it perhaps and try to time it when he does the darkness attack.
ok so took me weeks to kill the boss so i got 70 attk then on the lightening phase i took rune armour because im only 42 def, that helped allot with his melle attcks, i can now dodge every lightening strike because i zoomed right into my charactar and each time i saw that shadow i just moved, before i got 70 attack it took me like about 20-30 tries, my stats are 70 attack 74 strength 42 defence 77 hp, combat level 82, full d hide and rune armour i took, (DO NOT use brews on lightening phase because youll have to restore then sip a super combat pot and youll obv have to look away while doing this, my invent was 6 brews 4 restores darts rune helm and body the rest was angler fish and kawarmbans, this will help!! DONT USE BREWS ON LIGHTENING PHASE :) all this for black graceful loool madness

This quest line started out sucking but it fun at the end.
Wow took me 6 goes when it came to the lightning I stood there like Zeus and absorbed every shock 😂 seriously though I was about to throw my dayum phone at the wall, hence why I went superman mode. I was chowing down mantra rays like I was in a eating competition. Thankfully it's over woo hoo

He doesnt do anything in the vid he said to do. Tanks blood pools, eats damage. Got lucky to kill him. Very lucky.
On each special attack (apart from the bloodveld which I did correctly) I show right way and the wrong way to do it. Maybe watch those parts again :)

Infuriating doing on mobile.
I just tried to do it on mobile right now and I got him to less than 100 on the first phase but I died. it seems so easy in the vids because theyre max levelled and i tried with medium level combat stats (72 atk, 76 magic, 70 def and strenght, and 60 prayer)
True, of course I've got maxed melee so that makes a difference. I still felt overall the fight was quite RNG based with how inaccurate the flail is. I think at lower levels, as long as you avoid the special attacks that deplete hp rapidly, it can be done.
@@SWH980 I found the 1st phase super easy, even though I suck at dodging the attacks and get hit like 3 times by the special attacks. the second phase is the one i struggle with because they hit too much and i dont heal fast enough.
@@jkml68 I got 70 att, def, prayer, range. Using piety and pfm, I must just be getting old, my reflexes aren't as quick. Plus on mobile you have to double click on everything to degree because you have to set auto retaliate off.

This boss is actually the worst in the game. Either rework it so:
1. The flail hits like a truck
2. Give him less hp
3. Let us use anything but the flail

This fight is fucking cancer. my combat stats are all 70+, and I'm running out of food every fucking time and that's with supercombat potions.

GOD FUCKING DAMMIT. I GET TO THE SECOND STAGE AFTER DOING THE FIRST STAGE PERFECTLY, AND I DIE BECAUSE IT'S IMPOSSIBLE TO HIT HIM WHEN HE'S CONSTANTLY HITTING THROUGH PROTECT FROM MELEE AND I CAN'T FOCUS ON THE LIGHTNING BOLTS. THIS IS IMPOSSIBLE UNLESS MAXED
The most infuriating part about this fight is that every attempt I need to use up more food, more super combat potions, more prayer potions, and if I die, I have to spend 50k just to get my shit back.
Having to sink my entire fucking bank into just ATTEMPTS is not fucking fun. I wouldn't even care if it didn't cost anything, but it fucking does.

Sounds like you're almost there! Try to make sure you're not getting whacked 50s by the darkness, that certainly helps. The flail is very inaccurate so hopefully you'll get some better luck soon.

I've just finished making my first sentinel alt, 70 strength, 70 attack, 60 defence, killed Vanstrom in blue d'hides, fury, regen, zerker ring, manacles, d defender.
Focus on the mechanics, it's really not that hard.
Good job doing this boss at 99 in all melee, great way to show unexperienced players how to beat this boss. "Go spend a couple hundred hours grinding and do this quest after"
I uploaded this on release so there wasn’t really a way to do that. Besides, the mechanics are exactly the same regardless of what stats you have, the fight will just take longer.

If you have full health and prayer when the lightning starts, you won’t have to eat or drink during the last part. Just click and it dies
