How I do it: A whiteboard, top to bottom my strategy on why to do what, then concentrate on what is important from them, and build your focus around that part. Be very selective on what you want to change or achieve, and then direct your influence as Shreyas mention.

I think we need some example scenarios and example influence scripts to solidify this thinking and to get the outcome we need.
I highly recommend the book "Switch" by Dan and Chip Heath as an influence resource.
