I can't resist here: in the early 70's, the Mona Lisa was a attacked by a man with a scissors, but lol and behold, Louvre officials said it wasn't the real Mona Lisa, but an approved copy, substituted while the original was being restored. This substitution had definitely not been announced in advanced, leading to the obvious question: was/is the original ever on display at the Louvre?? (I'm guessing no, but they may have put the original back.)
