  • Vincent Van Gogh has become one of the most famous artists for the wrong reason. The story of his mental illness and has taken over the story of the artist. In this video I am trying to put things right, showing you where the true power of his art comes from. If you are new to my channel, I would recommend that you see my videos about Impressionism, and George Seurat, where I explain terms such as complementary colours and pointilism, as well as the one about Still Life. Here are the links:

Seurat: • Seurat - What Is Going...

Finally, as I promise at the end of the video, here is the link to Don MacLean's beautiful song Vincent (a.k.a. Starry Nights):

This is a brilliant inspiring insight into one of the most misunderstood artists, Vincent Van Gogh, thank you for your passionate narrative into a beautiful mind and life, who left us a legacy of endearment into the created world around him, and around us. Vincent’s sense of wonder has as much impact today as when he put paint onto the canvas.
Thank you also for pronouncing Vincent’s name correctly, Van Gogh and not Van Go.
Wishing you joy in your onward creative journey.
    Thank you.

Summed him up really well! And I must say I never thought of sunflowers as having "Humility", I'll look at them differently the next time I see them!

I read Maugham's "Lust for Life" many years ago and it pointed me to V.G and as I learned more about his life and painting, I thought this novel did catch the tragic characteristics of his life. I think every person who finds he does not quite "fit" in society, no matter how hard he tries can sympathize with this wonderful man. As I get older (85) most things become unimportant and fade away. A few things, however become more relevant and meaningful than ever. V.G.'s life and works is one of these. Thank you for adding to my understanding and appreciation of this great artist.

I have read "Lust for Life" many years ago too, it is a great book! Van Gogh's story is even more interesting nowadays with our broadening perspective on mental illness and its social implications (less stigma etc.) Thank you for appreciation and insightful comments!

Finally this was recommended to me. I even searched for it. I enjoyed that. Love the close ups, and there were a few pieces in there I don't remember seeing before. I agree that it was not his mental breakdowns that made him a great artist, but rather the foundation of his core sanity. One thing people don't think about. Vincent believed in his art when the world at large did not (save for those scant positive reviews that didn't lead to sales), and as it turns out, he was right. There's a little bit of something like Galileo about that. The world believes one thing and an individual has seen a greater truth and knows it to be true. Even now, I don't think most people really understand Van Gogh's work. Rather, just as they like the statue of David, but will ignore masterpieces in the same gallery, they like what they are told is magnificent by authority. IMHO.

Thank you for your insightful and thought provoking comment as always! I read your blog posts on Van Gogh in the process of research for this video and they were very eye opening for me - so big thank you to you! Good to know that my videos appear among the recommended - I have begun to despair about UA-cam and its notorious algorithm...

@@GordonLF thank you for your kind words 🙏 ❤! In the last few months I dedicated myself to teaching Bulgarian to Ukrainian refugees online - there are more than 100 000 of them in Bulgaria and they need to be able to find jobs ASAP. Pray that this terrible war is over and I will be back, I promise!

Well, to start with, I can't say that I understand ANY art 😀. The videos that you watch here are result of a lot of research in books and online. My advice is to read art history books, watch art videos online, try to see art offline whenever you have a chance to visit museums, galleries and art events. Don't be shy to ask questions to artists and curators. There are no wrong questions about art and they would like the interest that you show. If you feel intrigued or moved by the work of a certain artist, research him/her. Don't try to Understand, let yourself Feel things first. For starters I would recommend that you watch my very first video here, about how to look at art. Art is a journey without an end - go with the flow and enjoy it 😉
