  • In this video, Still Life Is Not So Still As You Think, I am revealing the secrets of still life and how it reflects our outlook on life. There are elements of still life painting which many of us do not appreciate until we look more closely - for example, renaissance art symbolism, which bring to life much of the art called "still".

I love your explanations of paintings and artwork that I have seen but never quite understood. I am a 68 year old woman who has dreamed of being an artist all her life but has only recently begun venturing into producing work that I may one day share. I have no particular style and therefore your description of art of various genres and from so many parts of the world show me that one does not need to be boxed into a particular style…..as art is an expression of the self….and I am learning about the many facets of my personality through my work. Thank you.

You made still life rather dynamic; evolving with the times: with relevance and appeal to the contemporary viewer. Thanks for the perspectives!

I think you’re brilliant! Love this historic look at still life works and as ever, your storytelling is insightful and inspiring. Thank you for this and the wisdom of looking beyond the immediate visceral reaction to help in keeping the mind fresh!

love how the initial inspiration took you (& us) on a journey into other artists' works...also the analogy about the mouldy mind 👌

Thank you! If you have a chance to see work by Studio Drift in Amsterdam, go for it. What I show here only scratches the surface. When we were there they had a solo exhibition and it blew my mind.

Thanks a lot, dear! I love so much to look still life art work, for me it was always the best meditation. And now I see that I was really ignorant about the meaning and ideas in still life! Thanks 👏❤️

Thank you! You must be a closet Morandi girl then. His work is exactly that - no bells and whistles and unexplicable magnetism. Look out for him, most big museums have his work. XXX

...and still another fascinating, informative and creatively presented video Boryana!
I’d never seen the de Messina before! The “Hundred Antiques” and the “MMMM....Munbangdo” were also unknown to me. A refreshing and inspiring look at Cezanne, and I agree with you about Studio Drift. My partner Lili and I so enjoyed their exhibition in the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam a few years ago. I went back a second time and have a piece of theirs in my home. Favorite quote? “The mold is in my mind.” Brava!!

Thanks Michael! Each of these videos is a journey of discovery for me too. I saw the same exhibition of Studio Drift and fell in love with their work! And de Messina's St. Jerome is a real gem, look it up. It is as complex and rich in symbolism as the Arnolfini portrait. Here I am only scratching the surface.

Very interesting video with lots of examples from different eras, showcasing the array of possibilities for still lifes.
The moldy fruit sculptures are quite good. What most struck me was the technical virtuosity of the older still-life paintings. They must have been used as exercises to help artists depict forms and textures in three dimensions. They are so detailed that they surpass photography, which couldn't keep all the details in focus at the same time. While contemporary still lifes have overlap in terms of using symbols, and making statements about the personal value of the objects, they often don't share at all the painterly expertise is rendering those objects. One could argue that Tracey Emin's unmade bed, with various filth, is a contemporary still life, for example. However, since there's precisely zero attempt or skill at recreating those objects in another medium, in that sense it isn't at all. Of course, as you mentioned, Cezanne's still lifes were much more abstracted, etc. However, after seeing those early examples, I'm inclined to look for the very skilled observation and recreation of the objects in question, and the hard-learned technical virtuosity it requires to do so. That's must my personal take. Others, as we know, are only interested in the ideas.

Thank you! Yes, the Dutch Golden Age painters were incredibly meticulous and real virtuosos. There was a thriving art market in Holland at the time and still lives were very much in demand, so their proliferation was more due to market demand than exercises in painterly. And yes, they are incredible, I have been lucky to see a few in original. As for Tracey Emin's bed - well, all her artistic revelation was to proclaim it a work of art and milk its scandalous voyeuristic appeal. Other than that, it is at best a predictable, monodimensional metaphor of a discfunctional life. Really low stuff.

Still life is one of my favourite genres and your video is among my favourite ones too 💕 I love the way you grow the topic up to contemporary. I put down some new interesting artists and I'll have a look at their work. Thank you!

Hi, I really enjoy watching your videos! Just a small suggestion: the audio experience would be vastly better with mics in the set-up, right now the audio comes out quite harsh. I really don't know much about this stuff, just an observation, good luck and look forward to seeing more!
