Boryana, I have a delightful treat with your absolutely exquisite lecture of one of the greatest artists of all time: Vermeer.
Vermeer’s realism, depth (tridimensional illusion of depth), and accuracy is legendary. He probably used the camera oscura for accuracy, as some objects (e.g. maps, chandeliers, and other intricate accessories) are depicted with such unerring, detailed precision that is only possible with the aid of an optical device.
His paintings are said to be photographic, but the magic of the illusion of depth, and as you say, the “treatment of light,” are all trademarks and genuine signature of a genius of the highest order!
The “Optical Gray Illusion for Depth:”
Close studies of Vermeer’s painting technique have shed some insights into the secrets lying beneath the upper layers.
Like most artists of the time, he would start with an imprimatura, a warm monochrome painting with his legendary precision (with the aid of the camera oscura), and keen understanding of the shimmering effects of light, spectrum and cast shadows.
Upon a monochrome imprimatura, it is very likely that Vermeer would start to build-up his painting in shades of grey “Grisaille.”
Upon this “Grisaille” Vermeer would then start to block-in with colors, and how he understood the nature of coloration, tints, hues, spectrum, et al., in all their subtleties and nuances is still a marvel.
His “sparkling highlights” almost brushless, suggest that he might have used a fast-drying oil medium, possibly linseed oil refined with the addition of (+?), and the beauty of the finished work is flawless, ethereal, atmospheric, timeless, calm, beautiful and blissfully preserved, for all eternity, like living people and souls in the master works of genius!
