  • In this video, we cover the differences between Display Capture and Window Capture in OBS Studio. If you make tutorial videos, you'll most likely want to use Display Capture since Window Capture does not include things like right-click menus.

Thanks for the vid. What's the difference between Window Capture for VLC Player vs. Media Source (linking to that video directly). Which method has better video/audio quality, and in-time performance? Thanks!

Windows Ink whiteboard is working fine with display capture but not working with windows capture. In windows capture I am able to see the white screen but whenever I write or draw any thing on whiteboard, it doesn't get captured in obs recording.
Is there any setting needs to be done? Can you please help here.

So, I'm currently in need of a little bit of help. For some reason the colours on my OBS window and display capture are inverting / using negative colours
Like anything blue is orange and anything orange is blue, Could you help with that by chance?

You provided the best advice I needed: window capture does not record the right-click menus. Thank you.

Hey Nocholas! If you are recording a reaction video, I'd imagine you'd want the video you are reacting to and a camera on you. I would recommend window capture so that you don't need to worry about cropping out the start bar (if you are on Windows), etc. You will want your first source in OBS to be your Video Capture Device, then your Window Capture underneath. Hope this helps!

Is OBS good for recording video game video, not just broadcasting?

a good capture card paired with OBS is great for recording game video. On the right hand side of the main dashboard, the first two options are "start streaming" and "start recording."

@@bigbytemedia5913 Good for PC video game video too?

Hey DanceGameGuy! We definitely should have been more specific - if you are recording game footage from a game console, then you'd need a capture card. If you are recording PC game footage, there is a 'Game Capture' source that will use the game as a source once it is full screen (by default behavior). There are other options you can choose - we'll get a video out on this!

I wouldn't say one is straight up better than the other, it depends on your needs. For me, I make tutorial videos and need things like right-click menus to be captured, which is why Display Capture is better for me (most of the time). If you are gaming (an assumption from your username), I'd recommend Game Capture. Hope that adds clarity!

I'm using OBS to record my online classes and I noticed that when I tab out since we only have 1 Monitor, The presentation in record goes blank and when I return it comes back again
