The Wilson's cared for each other very much. When The Beach Boys did Knebworth in 1980. You could see the love they had for each other when it came to Surfer Girl.
I think one of the things that made them so close was that they all had to endure and survive their father. Murry was an abusive and overbearing man, even if he did get them their start and was responsible for their rise to superstardom. I think Murry was especially hard on Dennis. Probably because Dennis was the most outwardly rebellious of the boys and wouldn’t hesitate to stand up to his dad whenever the abuse happened. Anyway, the three of them had to rely on each other in order to cope with Murry’s heavy-handed approach to fatherhood. It’s a bit like veterans who survived wartime. However that’s only because that’s how I’m put together. It’s different for every addict. What worked for me isn’t necessarily going to be as effective as it would be for someone else. There is no one blanket solution that applies to everyone. It’s all down to the individual and how they’re wired. And then there’s certain addicts who are sadly just never going to make it, no matter what. Statistically, those kind of addicts are the majority. Whether or not Dennis was one of them is anyone’s guess. All it takes is one bad decision once your luck has run out, and that’s the end. Diving into frigid waters after you’ve been drinking all day most likely falls into that category. There’s always new methods of treatment, new medications, and new therapies popping up all the time, but again when we look at the statistics nothing really ever changes. Those figures have always hovered in the same range. One thing that probably should change in my opinion is the availability, affordability, and accessibility of treatment, and the funding for expansion of the treatment industry. Instead of spending all this money on things like drug testing in the workplace, employers should offer a completely confidential treatment plan for their employees who suffer from addiction. Removing the stigma would be a great place to start.
The thing that boggles my mind is how anyone can idolize a band on the same level as the Beach Boys, because there never was another band on that level with them. The brilliance of Brian Wilson and Dennis as well has never been matched and never will be. Those 5 years (63-68) where Brian was in control were the greatest, most creative years in rock history; it's interesting how the whole "scene" if you will crumbled after that, not just the band but the whole mainstream rock culture.

Let's not forget Carl - such an angelic voice. Carl's singing helped bring so much of Brian's greatest music alive (songs like 'God Only Knows" and "Surfs Up").
@@UFO_computersOn the SMiLE version it’s all Brian, but on the ‘71 version from the album of the same name, which was the first (and only for a very long time) version that the public got to hear, Carl sings lead on most of it, and Brian sings a re-recorded verse. I’ve also been told that Al sings a verse as well, but I just don’t hear it. Anyway, the original recorded lead vocal from SMiLE remained unreleased until 2011. As I said earlier, that one’s all Brian.
I love how the Wilson brothers loved each other so much. They always expressed love, admiration and respect for each other. Such a wonderful thing to see...and such a sad ending. Man ...I LOVE the Beach Boys. AL Jardine and Bruce Johnston fit right in with them in beautiful spirit. To: @Michelle Baker, Thnkx for your comment about Dennis, as a fan of THE BEACH BOYS it would be great to just talk to him by yourself and talk about anything you know! I too made a comment about him, it would be a pleasure meeting him in person and talk about anything and I laid some beautiful flowers where he drowned and said a prayer & hope he's doing okay up there with his mom! He has a beautiful voice and I'll miss him, loved the way he played the drums and saw him with the rest of THE BEACH BOYS at the Washington Monument every 4th of July and was there when Ringo Starr was playing with THE BEACH BOYS and I got a great tan over there and went there by myself!
In the mid 70s (74-77) when the Beach Boys were back on top commercially, that new re-emergence all came from the nostalgia of their heyday and its a shame cuz they had made so many great albums from Pet Sounds to Holland and only in the UK did those albums get the credit they deserved. Wild Honey was a phenomenal album, as was Sunflower and Holland. Friends had its moments as well as Surfs Up; the Beach Boys never made a "weak" album til after Love You; after that they never had a strong one.
@@steveparker5406Absolutely, yes. I’m certainly not a Mike Love fan, but personal opinions aside I know that even Mike recognized Brian’s gifts. He may not have always respected those gifts, but he definitely knew that his cousin had something very special.
I'm rather surprized to here Dennis speak of 20/20 as an embarrassment. His 4 songs on the album are strong, and I think the entire album is great, maybe better than other albums of that era such as friends, & wild honey. Anyways, we miss you Dennis. He was perhaps the best performer of the band and most entertaining on stage. Thanks
'20/20' was the album where Brian chose to step down from his leadership of The Beach Boys, and the album on which the band had to find songs from the previous three years that Brian had half completed for them to complete to make it look as if he was them leading. it was the album on which Brian's lack of SMiLE and therefore loss of confidence was made clear to the public.
What I took from that wasn’t so much that he was embarrassed of the album itself, but more like embarrassed about what it represented… which was that it was really the first time they ever had to desperately gather up all these old leftover outtakes and what have you from earlier recording sessions, since they were short on new songs after Brian checked out for a while and Carl still had yet to step up as the de facto leader and start contributing his own songs. Plus there was the whole Manson thing that took place at that time. That was a major sore spot for Dennis.
Interesting hearing Dennis mention the “20/20” album as being the real turning point in the Beach Boys’ long downhill slide. It does make sense. They had to stitch together all these various outtakes and other miscellaneous scraps, along with what few new recordings they had since it was during that period when Brian wasn’t writing any new music and Carl had yet to step up as band leader. Obviously Dennis really loved his big brother, and tried his best to do whatever he could to get Brian back into doing what he did best. As the oldest of 4 siblings, it makes me think of times in my past when I was fucking up and my little brothers stepped in to help me get my life back together. It’s very heartwarming. The Wilson brothers all went through their own struggles, but they always had each other’s backs. Unfortunately nothing could be done for Dennis at the end.
i guess you have to bear the interviewer's questions/tone in order to hear denny's speak. so as much as some hear an interrogation, i'll take it in order to hear denny's voice and perspectives on Brian and the band. incidentally, i think there are a lot of good songs on "20/20".
Fornatel had a style that overwhelmed the people being interviewed. He was not a very effective interviewer. Dennis Wilson probably wanted to punch this guy , lol . Mike Love had more negative impact on the Beach Boys rather than Brian's health, my opinion. A contributor yes, but an arrogant and poor performer. Dennis really loved his brother, God Bless him. Brian Wilson is one tough guy, he's a survivor. And just came out with a great new solo album, thanks Brian.
At 2:37, Fornatale threw a softball Q, probably hoping DW would at least partially blame Mikey for the less-commercial direction Brian wanted to go; "a fight for control to get back to a hit-making formula." DW didn't take the bait, despite the well-known rift between DW & ML.

@@tommytwomommy ….. That wasn’t Manson, but he was there, and so were Dennis Wilson, Gregg Jacobson and Bobby Beausoleil. It was done by members of the Satan Slaves motorcycle gang, and just after one of the bikers bit the black guys ear off, and he was member of the Black Panthers. This incident occurred in June 1969 at The Indian Masa, which is located across Santa Susana Pass from Spahn Ranch and just above Devil’s Canyon, about a mile and a half from Spahn Ranch. The next night member of the Satan Slaves took his body from The Indian Masa and dumped it deep inside Griffith Park. Both the LAPD and LASO knew about what happen, and although they found the body his death was never reported in the media. No one was ever arrested, and Manson did not find out that LAPD had found the black guys body until a few days after he was questioned at Inyo County PD by LAPD, which occurred immediately after Manson was arrested at Barker Ranch on October 12, 1969.

Fair call..his death was an accident certeinly not intentional 🤔🤔although he wasn't in a good head space at the time of his death😣😣 so i kinda see your point 🤔🤔
Should have interviewed Brian,Didn't learn much about Dennis.......Seen this in many Beach Boys interviews, that must have been annoying at times........"Welcome Dennis, tell me about Brian"!!
Typical interviewer. Maybe a good deejay, but what about questions for Dennis about his growing role in the band as songwriter/producer, starting in '68? He's promoting his solo album, so how about a backstory to that? Will Dennis perform live to promote the album? What's next with solo/band work? Such a lost opportunity.
Brian was a musical Genius. It's been said that geniuses often suffer with extreme mental problems, or a self-destructive fatal flaw. Music geniuses such as Michael Jackson, Marvin Gaye, Prince, Freddie Mercury, R. Kelly etc.
To all the dummies out there who consider Mike Love to be the root of evil, they should listen to this interview very carefully. Dennis clearly says that not one member of the group was concerned with the musical direction around the Pet Sounds/Smile era (proof: he was there, you were not). Mike's admitted he'd had an issue with a couple of Van Dyke's lyrics, but it would make sense for the group's primary lyricist to push back and offer criticism. I'm sure said dummies will hear this and have the cognitive dissonance to ignore what they've heard, but facts are facts.
I agree, this Pete guy is a jerk, and his voice is annoying too! Why would you call Dennis to come all the way from California to NYC, just to talk about Brian's past?! I'm glad Dennis eventually brought the conversation to the present. If you wanted to talk about Brian, then you should've had Brian there, and the joke is, he interviewed Brian 3 years prior to this. And then River Song plays after the interview was over. Dennis had an album coming out but all this guy wanted to do was talk about Brian...I know Denny loved and admired his brother, but if I was him I would've been pissed.
Brian Grant Yea probably lol. It's still annoying to me that the guy spent 12 minutes talking about Brian and nothing else. It's bad enough that the band didn't take Dennis' music seriously, but then when POB became moderately successful, they got mad (Mike and Al Jardine in particular).

"How do you fire your dad?"
"You say: Dad... I'll see ya later."
Y'know?
The thing that boggles my mind is how anyone can idolize a band on the same level as the Beach Boys, because there never was another band on that level with them. The brilliance of Brian Wilson and Dennis as well has never been matched and never will be. Those 5 years (63-68) where Brian was in control were the greatest, most creative years in rock history; it's interesting how the whole "scene" if you will crumbled after that, not just the band but the whole mainstream rock culture.
LISTEN TO THE FOUR FRESHMEN VOCAL GROUP, AND YOU WILL HEAR WHERE THE BRIANS B.B. VOCAL ARRANGEMENTS CAME FROM. A HUGE INFLUENCE ON THE BEACH BOYS SOUND.ua-cam.com/video/OOVOllNHSis/v-deo.html
Let's not forget Carl - such an angelic voice. Carl's singing helped bring so much of Brian's greatest music alive (songs like 'God Only Knows" and "Surfs Up").
@@glennhavinoviski8128- Isn’t that Brian singing Surf’s Up?
@@UFO_computersOn the SMiLE version it’s all Brian, but on the ‘71 version from the album of the same name, which was the first (and only for a very long time) version that the public got to hear, Carl sings lead on most of it, and Brian sings a re-recorded verse. I’ve also been told that Al sings a verse as well, but I just don’t hear it.
Anyway, the original recorded lead vocal from SMiLE remained unreleased until 2011. As I said earlier, that one’s all Brian.
How AWESOME IT WOULD BE... IF THIS HAD VIDEO WITH IT!!!
Not to mention miraculous, considering it was a radio interview.
What a wonderful interview
I wish this interview was longer
I love how the Wilson brothers loved each other so much. They always expressed love, admiration and respect for each other. Such a wonderful thing to see...and such a sad ending. Man ...I LOVE the Beach Boys. AL Jardine and Bruce Johnston fit right in with them in beautiful spirit. Mike Love...well...he served a purpose...he was a good frontman and nice baritone vpicr added to the sound and harminy ...outgoing personality but I hear he thought he was bigger than the group ... LOL.
Mike thinks he's bigger than most things.
He has a beautiful voice and I'll miss him, loved the way he played the drums and saw him with the rest of THE BEACH BOYS at the Washington Monument every 4th of July and was there when Ringo Starr was playing with THE BEACH BOYS and I got a great tan over there and went there by myself!
one of the best interviews of all time
In the mid 70s (74-77) when the Beach Boys were back on top commercially, that new re-emergence all came from the nostalgia of their heyday and its a shame cuz they had made so many great albums from Pet Sounds to Holland and only in the UK did those albums get the credit they deserved. Wild Honey was a phenomenal album, as was Sunflower and Holland. Friends had its moments as well as Surfs Up; the Beach Boys never made a "weak" album til after Love You; after that they never had a strong one.
Dennis was the only one in the group, who really understood Brian´s unbelievable talents (without envy). (So did the Wrecking group).
I think Al, Mike, Bruce, David and Carl understood his talent. Everyone did. Mike, with all his legal issues, always recognized Brian’s talent.
@@steveparker5406Absolutely, yes. I’m certainly not a Mike Love fan, but personal opinions aside I know that even Mike recognized Brian’s gifts. He may not have always respected those gifts, but he definitely knew that his cousin had something very special.
He even grew a beard like his bruhs. Cute!!
And a gorgeous beard at that!
It was the 70’s. The beards were everywhere back then.
What a great interview
Amazing how Brian, with all his demons, drug use and issues outlived Dennis and Carl.
Wish Dennis and Carl were here to see Brian now that he has overcame his demons.
I'm so glad I've seen all the BBs but sadly Dennis died a year & a 1/2 before I was born. He was the greatest -
I'm rather surprized to here Dennis speak of 20/20 as an embarrassment. His 4 songs on the album are strong, and I think the entire album is great, maybe better than other albums of that era such as friends, & wild honey. Anyways, we miss you Dennis. He was perhaps the best performer of the band and most entertaining on stage. Thanks
I don't think it was the album, but I think it was 'Never Learn Not to Love' that embarrassed Dennis.
Doesn't surprise me at all, it is just like he says it is.
Fantastic interview questions
Pete Fornatale, one of New York's best diskjockeys
Thanks so much for posting this!!
Love you Denny
i guess you have to bear the interviewer's questions/tone in order to hear denny's speak. so as much as some hear an interrogation, i'll take it in order to hear denny's voice and perspectives on Brian and the band. incidentally, i think there are a lot of good songs on "20/20".
Whoa! Denny's voice here isn't as "hoarse" as in the "later yrs." Better here, but STILL AS GREAT!!! 🎸🎤🎶
Love Pete on 'New! My favorite DJ.
good interview !
"it seems at times though, that he (brian wilson) is programmed by others" ..."i think hes programming others" haha
Dennis was ALSO "clever!"
This is like an interrogation. Uncomfortable.
the BEACHBOYS our claim to fame here in the U.S. when i got to california it was exactly like what the BEACHBOYS portrayed in there music. i bought myself a 1961 chevy convertible. white with a black rag top, threw my guitar in the back seat & split for the beach & i were in heaven with the BEACHBOYS on my 8 - track. BITCHEN.

Brian Wilson is the Genius for Good Vibrations
Dennis Wilson's mind really took a nosedive after his relationship with the Manson family..
ccjjpp1966 yeah I bet. He saw charlie throw a dead black guy down a well.
By 1976 Brian almost sounded like Dennis. Brian got saved by why didn't Dennis? where was everybody when Dennis needed them the most?
Dennis hit his head, got knocked out and drowned. This is like asking why no one was there to save some one killed in an auto accident. It was a mistake to dive without anyone present, I don't see how others can be blamed for not being present at that particular moment
Fair call..his death was an accident certeinly not intentional 🤔🤔although he wasn't in a good head space at the time of his death😣😣 so i kinda see your point 🤔🤔
I think he's talking about his alcohol and drug use. Dennis had some demons of his own in his later years. He was fired from the band for a while.
You can't "fix" people. He was, apparently, impossible to live with and completely resistant to attempts to help him.
Should have interviewed Brian,Didn't learn much about Dennis.......Seen this in many Beach Boys interviews, that must have been annoying at times........"Welcome Dennis, tell me about Brian"!!
Wow!
Yes he was.
Little known fact is that Dennis was living with Christy McVee ( of Fleetwood Mac fame) for awhile near the end
This interview is a bit confrontational.
I thought I heard in a interview with Brian that he had only done acid twice. ..not sure if I believe that though.
🇺🇸Our best President in history of USA🇺🇸
Huh. I don't remember Pete Fornatale sounding like Mr. Rogers during NEW's heyday.
interviewer is a bit nosy
Typical interviewer. Maybe a good deejay, but what about questions for Dennis about his growing role in the band as songwriter/producer, starting in '68? He's promoting his solo album, so how about a backstory to that? Will Dennis perform live to promote the album? What's next with solo/band work? Such a lost opportunity.
To be fair, I don't think Dennis was letting Fornatale ask many questions.
It wasn't drugs that got Dennis.. It was Brother Alcohol all day..
Brian Grant but hardly any alcoholic is just an alcoholic. Gotta have coke to stay awake. Pills to sleep.
It was hitting his head on the dock while surfacing for air after diving 12+ feet that got Dennis Wilson ffs
@@tommytwomommy there are PLENTY of alcoholics who have no interest in drugs.
Brian was a musical Genius. It's been said that geniuses often suffer with extreme mental problems, or a self-destructive fatal flaw. Music geniuses such as
Michael Jackson, Marvin Gaye, Prince, Freddie Mercury, R. Kelly etc.
Mike Love has a better claim to musical genius than R. Kelly.
I thought this was an excellent interview.
20/20 sure was a disjointed album considering the Fab Four conseptual albums preceding it (Pet Sounds, SMiLE/Smiley Smile, Wild Honey and Friends).
I heard he was never the same after finding out Manson and his followers were killers.
It was Mike love,he didn't think they should mess with the way they had done it.there father was a tyrant.
Dennis had an album coming out but all this guy wanted to do was talk about Brian...I know Denny loved and admired his brother, but if I was him I would've been pissed.
time machine It looks like he was promoting his record as well...Dennis probably had some pussy waiting too!
Brian Grant Yea probably lol. It's still annoying to me that the guy spent 12 minutes talking about Brian and nothing else. It's bad enough that the band didn't take Dennis' music seriously, but then when POB became moderately successful, they got mad (Mike and Al Jardine in particular).
time machine l
Hal Blaine said he did 99.9% drumming on Beach Boys LP's. So I guess Dennis was the tour drummer.
Get a hold of this: Satan had a hold of Dennis. And he desires to destroy us ALL. Choose LIFE. Choose Jesus. NOW. Time is running out.
I'm extremely glad that my religion believes the Satan to be G-d's agent of free will and doesn't recognize a "devil."
I’m sorry but I would get so annoyed with the interviewers voice
he was drinking and diving... it didn’t end well
Didn't Dennis push to have Charlie Manson signed to Brother records?
He championed his music for a bit. Obviously, this was before anyone knew Manson was a maniac. And in fairness, Manson had potential as a songwriter.
Don't buy the carrots. Buy the taters. Taters is gonna fill ye up more and ye body can use more of the tater. Carrots may be good fer ye eyes, but they won't fill ye. Both of 'em cost about the same so get the taters. I thank the taters are actually a little less cost. Taste-wise, they's no contest. Taters win. No matter how ye fix 'em, boiled, baked, fried. Boy, they's good. Carrots are so-so. So buy the taters.
I am ashamed on the part of Dennis blaming Brian’s masterpiece Pet Sounds on drugs. Whose drugs, Dennis? You were the most stoned Beach Boy of all. You got yourself drowned while drunk on alcohol. What is your musical legacy?
I'm rather surprized to here Dennis speak of 20/20 as an embarrassment. His 4 songs on the album are strong, and I think the entire album is great, maybe better than other albums of that era such as friends, & wild honey. Anyways, we miss you Dennis.
