so interesting that at around 3:40 he mentions that Beach Boy music is not selling. Less than one year later, Endless Summer was released, number one album and on the charts for over 150 weeks.
Brian sounds like he"s going about a million miles an hour in this. Probably the Coke, which he was heavily into during this period. You can also hear the obvious wear and tear on his voice as well, it's one of musics tragedies that Brian lost that wonderful falsetto.
Jerome, I read that Dennis didn't attend his father's funeral either. Carl was the only son who did. Thanks to Steel for sharing this audio gem. It's *wonderful* to hear Brian laughing his head off at the end. He was such a great champion of his wife's singing career, even after they divorced he was still saying he thought she was a great singer. To me, both sisters sound off-key but Brian is the genius so let's trust his ear (the good one).
I think this is running slightly fast. This was actually recorded just days after Murray Wilson died. Apparently, Brian went to New York to avoid going to the funeral which upset other members of his family. I think Brian has always had a tendency to swing wildly back and forth between being very animated and very subdued, possibly related to bipolar. I wouldn't attribute anything and everything to drugs. Too simplistic.
He went to NYC to hide his affair with Diane which was very disgusting sure ok lets blame the drugs for having sex with his sister in law and it was the 70s. My diane sucked anyhow....he was truly messed up in the head
He was totally lucid in periods in the late 90s, early 2000s, and even briefly a few years ago for the fender interview. He swings wildly back and forth.
Definitely his heavy cocaine period. I think he was already spending a lot of time in bed or maybe it was soon after this. Too bad Landy was brought in to help instead of someone else. Brian's brain went downhill and never quite returned.
not really, he slept during the day and was up at night with friends. His brain didn't go downhill, he's always been very smart and aware of what he's doing, as you can witness from his solo albums. Andy Paley, one of his collaborators from the late 1980's and '90's can attest to that.

Well, listen to his version of Awake from 1972, it's in a high register and incredible. He began to chain smoke in 1974 and that plus the cocaine gave us the voice we heard on 15 Big Ones. Now that voice was partly a put on , kind of his "manly approach" to singing. I think it was influenced by Randy Newman.

Their studio albums still weren't selling. Their old hits sold because of American Graffiti and Happy Days making old malt shop music cool.

Have heard about this interview for decades. Now, after hearing it I realize I have missed nothing.

I agree.

Gemini
Nah. Sorry. He’s definitely on coke here
Dennis didn't go to the funeral also
Spring's album really was that good though.
"WE" "WE"
"my Diane"
Wife didn't get a title song, but her Sister did.
Yes, I feel sorry for Marilyn. Diane was a terrible sister.
Very strange for a sister to do this to another sister
There is a song, recorded but not released, called "Marilyn Rovell". It's on UA-cam..
Brian sounded enthusiastic and lucid in this interview. This might have been his last project before going into seclusion.

he never went into seclusion, he was always out and about but less involved with the Beach Boys. He did produce Child of Winter in late '74
Love The Beach Boys The Honeys and American Spring
Thanks, fascinating to listen to Brian's voice right before he really lost it and all..
Vincecouk it definitely had changed a bit here
It changed alot in 1974 and even more in 1976.

Cocaine is a helluva drug
he was addicted to speed at this time
Is Diane Rovell still alive?
Yes, all members of the Honeys are still alive.
I’ve spent hours trying to find an answer to that question and this comment is all I’ve found
Brian kinda looks like paul dano in this picture.
It was around this time that he was starting to lose his falsetto voice
Started losing it during the Surf's Up sessions, sadly. Stephen Desper said that his vocals on "Til' I Die" had to be pitched up a bit.
@@rapabsinthe786 where did you read that? That's interesting

@@gerrydooley951Also he had a bit of laryngitis during that time.
@@madcap_9539 well if you here Brian tell it he had laryngitis from 1976-1979. It was his go to excuse
It makes sense about the scitzophrenia with the speed and all wtf the Odyssey is the shit tho I mean really tripping much??
