  • Neil Young performs "Cowgirl in the Sand" at the Farm Aid concert in Bristow, Virginia on September 17, 2000.
Farm Aid was started by Willie Nelson, Neil Young and John Mellencamp in 1985 to keep family farmers on the land and has worked since then to make sure everyone has access to good food from family farmers. Dave Matthews joined Farm Aid's board of directors in 2001.
For more information about Farm Aid, visit: farmaid.org/youtube
Farm Aid's performances are donated by the artists in order to raise funds and raise awareness for family farmers. They've raised their voices to help - what can you do?

i remember when this first came out , maybe 1968 or so ? it's been a long time and i was ripped on mescaline and mushrooms that night . took enough for five people accidentally .had to sit down in a corner of the room at a party in SanFran . my spine began to heat up and i sat bolt upright as this came on the stereo. must have been about fifteen people in the room and no one said a word or moved as the entire album played without a break . it's impossible to explain in words the feeling in that room . it's as if the entire group were transported to another dimension all at the same time with neil at the helm of that mind ship . truly psychedelic .

Out of all the great rockers of his generation, I don't know if anyone aged with so much energy left for live performances. You can still feel all of that energy he has in his soul for this music. I think that you can feel that the artist is tired of singing and playing the same song over and over but Neil plays it like its his first time and last time whenever he plays.

The lead guitar pours out of his soul, he feels the music like no other. You can see he is in a groove by the way his body moves. Bless him.

First saw him in my home town, Long Beach, CA. Cinco de Mayo (though unless you were an immigrant, it wasn't celebrated yet), 1968; but it happened to be the place and date of the last concert the Buffalo Springfield ever performed--the first of many rock shows I would be attending for the rest of my life. Not at all a bad start. I'll soon be 69, and it's wonderful that Neil is still out there, with Stephen, and a few other old timers like Mick and Keith, just cranking away at it still. This was, of course, his first album with Crazy Horse in 1969, release a bit before I graduated from the working-class grist mill--thinking I knew what was what! Hahahahaha.

Neil does what he wants, never trying to be anyone but himself, he's not a very fast guitar player but nobody can do the same thing as neil young, how he moves, bending the string, making music, those are all extraordinary...

Neil is intense when he gets in his zone. I've seen him working behind the scenes and he rehearses as if he were playing in front of an audience taking breaks to correct things so when you see him on stage, what you're getting is an extended, amped up version of where he's been at working it out in a rehearsal studio and following his active muse. He loves to play and find new musical ideas and is as genuine as they come.
