Although the word is out, lipless crankbaits are still a relatively new phenomenon for multi-species ice fishing. We've caught scores of bass, walleyes, crappies and even bluegills on these productive baits thanks to the wide range of sizes, shapes and colors.
Perhaps nobody knows this as well as Tony Roach of Roach's Guide Service who bases his operation on Minnesota's famed Mille Lacs Lake. Roach explains how lipless baits like the Rapala Rippin' Rap and Slab Rap have become year-round tools for a variety of gamefish and especially so on famed big fish waters like the Bay of Green Bay, Lake Winnipeg and Lake of the Woods.
He details his go-to rod, reel and line combo for fishing lipless crankbaits for walleyes, with emphasis on the importance of a braided mainline to a fluorocarbon leader for maximum action, sensitivity and hook setting efficiency. He points out some key differences in body profiles and sound attributes between a couple leading baits and when to use each based on the conditions.

That lipless is really roasting those eyes! Lookin forward to bass spawn already! Great fishing and catches! Good luck guys! 👌
Appreciate it Nate. We're always ready for bass season again, especially when we're 4 months into fishing on a sheet of ice. Fortunately for us, we get to spend a good deal of time down south in the winter.
I still wish they made more clackn raps. they work for for walleye too, even trolling small ones
Got all the right gear in this vid!
Yeah, it definitely helps to have the right gear when you're out on the ice on a daily basis.
Add a snap to the split ring to give it for more action.
Would you ever use the rippin rap along side a set line? Or is that too drastically different presentations?
Snap clip or tie it direct to the lure?
I tryed the rippin rap UV pink this year and I’ve never caught so many big walleye through the ice...when minnows weren’t working I’d put it on and always catch a hog...
Great testimony. Thanks for sharing.
Hey - great tips. How long of a flouro leader and what pound test do you typically run? Thanks.
For walleye? 6lb-10lb flouro about a meter long
@@TeamColdfront Great, thanks. Have a great winter season.
Thanks Team Coldfront. To expand on this a little, Tony usually fishes a 1.5- to 2-foot fluorocarbon leader. He'll fish 6lb if walleye are fussy/line shy but 8lb is the all-around go-to. If you're on BIG fish water like Lake Winnipeg or Erie, 10lb is the go-to.
@@Wired2Fish Exactly 💯🔥
They are a great bait. Started using them for ice fishing for Lake Trout two years ago... it’s an incredible bite. Feel free to check it out the video on my page “Rippin’ Rap Lake Trout” I finally let out my go to Lake Trout bait. Cheers
Uhhh no no no. It didnt start with you. You may have brought it to mainstream but the first guy to tie a rattl'n rap onto an ice fishing rod was Roger Stern something like 30 years ago back when only a couple people fished lake winnipeg.
Tony pays due reference and respect to Roger in the vid. They’re close friends as are some of the W2F staff. He’s a respected ice innovator for sure!
Where'sTheSauce? - yeah - he mentions roger stern. Dink

LUL BEEEEEEEEEEECH!!!!!!
Besides the whole rattle bait thing didnt really take off for years. Roger has been fishing them since the 90's when there was barely a handful of people on the big lake.
And tbh the first people who brought the lipless trend to mainstream was in-fisherman. Back in the early 2000's with who else but mr roger stern. It just never really caught on until a few years ago.
Good Great. Who cares? Dink
