After hearing all the buzz about these two, I caved in and bought two colors each of the ripping rap and slab rap. I fished the rippin rap pink UV at dusk in 15 ft this past weekend and they reacted EXACTLY as James has shown here. Also I found that when the walleye swiped and got the hooks with no hookup on my end, they still were locked on and could be coaxed in to biting again with a *little* work of the lure as demonstrated. I was certainly impressed with the rippin rap lure potential. Get a UV color if you are fishing stained water or at dawn/dusk.
Me and my two brother in law's were debating the correct technique for these baits. Holst nailed it. James and IDO staff, truly do more of these kinds of things with most popular techniques for both ice and open water fishing. Well done.
You guys give the best resource, no matter if it's how to fish with different lures, what type of structure to look for or how to catch fish in different fishing conditions. You guys give out the best details educate people.. keep up the good work guys!!
Thank you very much for this video; I've always been intimidated to fish minnow-style baits because I know that they're somewhat different, but have never known how. IDO is truly one of the best educational resources for angling I've come across.
The last time I was walleye fishing, I was doing exactly what you said not to do. Putting the lure right in it's face, and watching it swim away. Thank you for this video! I can't wait to get out again and practice these techniques.
No-Fish Nick's Adventures hows it going N.F.N.A? i watch ur channel , it gives me the ice fishing itch every time. When are u going to go for whitefish? Anyways have a good day sir
Thank you very much ! I use a technique similar to this from a boat in open water too. I love the show, maybe someday I will get far enough north to try some hard water fishing.
I just bought some of these and experienced exactly what you were talking about. I was ripping it like a Jigging Rap and it seemed to spook the fish. The rattle of these baits is insane. I almost wish they offered them with or without rattles. Anyway thanks for the tips of how to fish these baits and hopefully I'll have better success using a more subtle approach.
Perfect, James. That's exactly what I asked for when you asked for suggestions. Next question....what size slab raps/rippin' raps to you start with or use a go to size? Thanks!
really enjoyed this episode of insights . Could you slip in a little more flasher coverage. I just ordered my first flasher and could use all the help I can get . keep up the good work stay safe
What you said is just like what happened to me last weekend crappie fishing. The fish will come up fast and hit it but miss and quickly swim back down but right when it started to swim down I jerk my lure up quick and the fish just swims right back up and hammers it.
I love the Rippin' Rap. I've caught fish on that when anglers all around me were skunked using typical spoons and live bait. The one thing I'm always back and forth on is whether or not it's best to drop the lure more slowly and under control or let it drop rapidly and more aggressively to maximize it's action. Thoughts/advice?
James, do you ever tip the front treble hook with a minnow head for scent? Or do you feel this takes away from the action of the bait? Thanks and great informative video.
Liked your video James!! Just bought some Slab Raps in 1/4oz. size. Hooks look awfully small. Do you go one size up or larger on the trebles. Don't want to take away with the action of the bait but those hooks look to small to me to get a good hook set in. Thanks!
One thing that would appreciate with your videos is if you added in the description of the video what rods/line/baits you used in the video with links where we can find them.
Brad Smithburg The slab rap isn't a rattle bait like the rippin rap is. Looks like the slap rap would have a looser wobble too. Slightly smaller profile. So any situation you find yourself needing those qualities over the other.
You'd have to ask the Fish this question. How do you do that? Tie one on and see if they bite it. Sorry James, you're not that good to be able to know exactly what fish are going to eat at any given time.
Della Bay buckshots, rippin rap , the 2 james was talking about are supposed to be amazing, rattle spoons are also good.. I use these lures for all species of fishing really..
That is the kind of content that you are not getting anywhere else right now. Hats off IDO
By far my favorite out door channel on UA-cam. You guys really are able to explain everything perfectly for the viewers to understand. I love it
These are the types of tips most shows leave out. By far hands down the BEST fishing show out there. Great job!!

This is an awesome show...the how and WHY is something most shows don't touch on. Information is better than pure entertainment. Keep it up!
This was exactly what I needed to know. I have been struggling with walleyes through the ice. Seeing how you explained it makes a lot more sense now.
The last time I was walleye fishing, I was doing exactly what you said not to do. Putting the lure right in it's face, and watching it swim away. Thank you for this video! I can't wait to get out again and practice these techniques.
I've have learned more in your last two videos. than on my own the last 30 years.
Love the video... especially showing how to use your flasher to ice more fish. Great tips all around. Keep em coming!
Thank you, you are exactly what I believe to be an anglers info site to be. Again THANK You James and your crew.
Thanks for the tip James! I'm gonna go catch all the fish in my lake now
Wow, love that you started doing these type of videos. Sooo helpful and exactly what I want to see. Thanks!
Great video James, everything you pointed out makes sense, will give it a shot.
Took the advice and BAM! Finally got my first slab on the slab rap. Had it for two seasons hahaha
Good tip James, I've been experimenting with these two baits the last two weeks and experienced both the good and bad of what you explained. Thumbs up
No-Fish Nick's Adventures hows it going N.F.N.A? i watch ur channel , it gives me the ice fishing itch every time. When are u going to go for whitefish? Anyways have a good day sir
Thanks 420sebastien. This weekend if all goes as planned. NFN out...
Thanks for this segment James been wondering why I could get them to look but not commit and now I understand what I'm doing wrong!!
Thank you very much ! I use a technique similar to this from a boat in open water too.
I love the show, maybe someday I will get far enough north to try some hard water fishing.
Ido is the best! never stop!
These videos are super helpful, you should do more videos with different types of lures.
Excellent Video. I feel like I should heed advice from this video for rattle spoons as well.
Just what I needed to know. I've been way too agressive with these types of lures. From now on I'll try to slow things down a bit.

Jesus, you're a legend! I needed to hear this.
Awesome segment James, thanks!
thank you, thank you, thank you! I actually needed to hear that, I need to slow it down a lot!
Great stuff
Perfect, James. That's exactly what I asked for when you asked for suggestions. Next question....what size slab raps/rippin' raps to you start with or use a go to size? Thanks!
Was just looking for a video on these seem to be missing a lot of fish good info!!
finally someone explains these baits!!
Excellent info, thanks! I'll have to slow her down a bit more when it isn't working next time.
really enjoyed this episode of insights . Could you slip in a little more flasher coverage. I just ordered my first flasher and could use all the help I can get . keep up the good work stay safe

You're welcome.

Totally awesome James! Thank you very much sir.
Once again amazing job! Thank you!
James, do you ever tip the front treble hook with a minnow head for scent? Or do you feel this takes away from the action of the bait? Thanks and great informative video.
that was very helpful and made alote of sence
can you use next time water tank? hoping to see how it goes under water
James do you use the same jigging cadence with the jigging rap or jigging shad rap?
What patterns produce best for you? Your go to’s

I don't replace them for walleye. No issues with good hooksets.
Awesome video James. I have a question: Would this technique and lure work for crappies too?
Abel Yang yes, the #4 Ripping Rap is a very good crappie bait. my two favourite colours are UV Pink and Glow Yellow Perch.
What do you guys take into consideration when choosing a color for your bait. Also what are your most productive colors.
This is a great topic for a future IDO Insight vid. I'll put it on the list.
One thing that would appreciate with your videos is if you added in the description of the video what rods/line/baits you used in the video with links where we can find them.
Great tips
Great video, thank you!
Ill add my own personal tip form experience.
Loud hard obnoxious rattling in a new area can be lethal for triggering large panfish.
? For you I never use these before very interested in these lures do you use a swivel and how far up from the lure would you tie a swivel.
Yes, about 18" up from the lure.
@@InDepthOutdoorsTV thanks for quick response love this channel God bless
Happy to help.
Great imformation
Do you tie it right on or use a swivel or leader?
We typically is a small swivel about 18" above the lure. We connect to the lure with a #1 snap.
Thanks for the tip
What situations do you use the rippin rap vs slab rap and slab rap vs rippin rap.
Ditto.
This is a great topic for a future IDO Insight vid. I'll put it on the list.
Brad Smithburg

Is there a different rippin rap because I got one but it doesn't say "ul" in front of it
The size #4 is the UL Rippin Rap. UL stands for Ultra Light. The other sizes, 5 - 7, aren't "UL."
James Holst thank you I am a huge fan yours!!!
What are some good baits for walleye fishing?
The rippin' raps and clackin' raps are great. Jigging spoons like the Swedish Pimple's are another favorite and a classic.
Della Bay buckshots, rippin rap , the 2 james was talking about are supposed to be amazing, rattle spoons are also good.. I use these lures for all species of fishing really..
What do you guys tip them with?
No livebait needed.
Is this the same cadence for crappie?
When fishing crappie my jig strokes are slower, shorter and I use more of a subtle rocking motion versus the twitch for walleye.
Thank you.
Well, if you fish the opposite way of what James says it catches pike really well. The harder you rip the more pike you get.
what are some good ice fishing channels to watch?
144:1 you can check out my channel if you'd like it's called the Frozen Fishermen I do ice fishing videos. I'd appreciate it if you subscribe. thanks
Della Bay!

Great tips and insights. Too much music while your explaining your technique.
