I knew this when a teenager. Not easy doing something that did not exist with people who had no idea that they had no idea. Asleep in an abyss. . In time the role of the observer was appreciated and much later the ineffable Witness was inferred and then glimpsed as what I and all else was.. I think Castaneda refers to this as well as the three Attentions which are personalised aspects of Awareness. Pure Awareness remains an ever present mystery. Some say it can be seen as an aspect of Consciousness, the primal substance which humans can have a non mechanical access to. Some say the reverse. What a great discovery awaits. Purification and release of the familiar conceptual reality must first be transversed in what is quite a journey into and through the timeless all the while whilst donning a mortal form. It is a never ending journey into the more and more subtle world of Glories that lie beyond words

this kind of content is so cool! the sheer possibility of a drastic and more enjoyable phenomological shift is kind of a missing-link in mainstream spirituality and hear it described so accurately is very, very refreshing - im psyched up about this series (:

Great! Thanks! Clearly a lot of seekers view this stage as full-on liberation, but alas…

I feel that I was born in this state and closed it off, to regain it around 16. I’m excited to see what comes next, high quality content. Thanks

These two short teachings might be very relevant for some dealing with the Witness and awarness...
    1. The Direct Instructions of Shri Singha to Padmasambhava from the tale "The Treasure of the Lotus Crystal Cave" from The Crystal Cave or Treasures from Juniper Ridge books.
    2. Self Liberation through seeing with Naked Awareness - Padmasambhava

Wow, this is awesome. I can't wait for the rest of the series. This sounds a lot like descriptions I've heard of stream entry, especially the "no turning back point" and practice being on a "downwards slope."

This is the best description of this that I have found. Very spot on. Do you have any practice recommendations for moving from this stage to the next?

At this level, we don't yet know the value of this peaceful place. We trade it for emotional attachments... or intellectual excitement.

What practices can be used to move from this stage to the Big Mind stage? I feel like there’s a lot of writings on getting to the witness but not so much about the next jump.

Typically the insight to have is to realise that awareness isn't separate from everything there is to be aware of. Doing high absorptive practices like jhana can help merge your sense of the mind into the entirety of experience.
Also strong absorptive metta meditation is good because this fosters the sense of unity and oneness which can bring people into the next stage 'big mind'.
But ultimately, you want to deconstruct the witness to realise that it isn't actually a thing. (it's actually more delusion) People have an impression of the witness but lack phenomenological specificity to clearly understand what makes up that impression. By scrutinising the witness with your attention directed straight back at it, you'll see that actually it's mostly made up of very subtle somatic sensations.
As well as looking straight back into the witness, also look round the edges of the visual field. Try to see where the visual field ends and meets the witness. Hope that helps!

Where does the dark night fit in? I felt that there was a week long period where concentration collapsed, felt like I was experiencing reality with no dopamine almost, before I passed into a wider more peaceful stage, equanimity I think. But this doesn’t seem to happen for everyone , some just go directly to no-self without these stages , what do you think ?
