  • Feels like I've been away for ages, but good to be back on the ranch and good timing as well.
Rhys has turned up in the digger to do a few little jobs that I've been wanting to get done for a while.
I'm also thinking about doing some more planting and it just makes sense where I want to do it.

Yes it's been raining more or less non stop since last autumn in the UK Arable farmers have lost a lot of their winter wheat and still struggling to get on the ground to re-sow with spring barley dairy farmers can't get on the ground to spread slurry or manure and can't get any fertiliser on the grazing cows will be going out late this year.
We've not had any dry spell longer than a couple of days for months

WET!!! Lad you have no idea, bought a hundred lucky bags today because even ( not gonna happen) it doesn’t rain here for the next two weeks we are only on a fifty fifty chance of getting the cows out so it’s looking like 15th of April at this point which is a long time from the 15 th of October. On the bright side our 6 weeks ( calving) is just on 90 percent and we got our semen delivered today, only sexed dairy from now on as we have been very successful with it across the board in the last few years, getting over 60 percent conception rates in cows and 85 in the heifers so we have decided to go 100 percent sexed from now on.

I definitely feel for you, sounds awful!
That’s really high for sexed semen, sounds amazing to me and with results like that you might as well, great calving pattern to!! 👍

That planting will look great. I'd be careful what you plant. You'd still want to get the digger in there in future? Looks pretty low lying. Flaxes are good at shorting out fences and pushing them over. I've seen sedges work well, and planted on edge both sides will shade drain. Broadleaf and shrubs the cows will keep off the fences if they can get head between wires, but they'll get too big to get a digger bucket in. It will become a protected area you can't touch even though you planted it! Might have to say it's a farm garden.

      @TheOnceADayFarmer  6 місяців тому +1

Great advice, and I can’t really remember now but I don’t think they wanted to put to much or any flax in because of that reason.
Also one reason I’d rather just pay for it as the rules may not be quite so bad 🤷 if you get what i mean.
But I think planting it out will help with a cleaner drain in the future and improve water quality 👍

Always awesome to see what plans Andrew has for the farm and be apart of it. Plan was to put groups of Carex geminata (native Grass) on the banks of the drain which will spread and help stabilise the bank, also create shade and suppress grass and weeds. These are naturally growing in drains on the farm which Andrew showed. Then 2 rows of trees like Manuka, mahoe, and karamu which will create a dense hedge on either side and more eventually cover the stream and it will end up like a stream in bush that doesn't need cleaning out.

Not sure what species you have in your hedges over there .but does anyone do any hedgelaying to restore hedges over there ?. I do it in the UK and just wondered

Do your chickens ever get attacked by hawks or other predators? I live in the mountains in Japan and we can’t let our chickens roam free because of hawks, foxes etc.

Yes occasionally the Hawkes get them when they are young, they tend not to go for them once they’re big enough though 👍

Glad you’ve had a good season but we’re having another terrible year in my part of South Otago.. only had 200mm since 1st October and we’ve had so much wind it’s beyond a joke now…
    It’s our 4th drought in a row.
Keep up the great work Andrew, you’re right all the wee jobs do add up to eventually having a great farm!

Originally was thinking it would be a cool project to get the local school on board, but this time round I’d probably rather just get them to it, right plant right place sort of thing, there’s quite a few spots where they want to put certain types of plant and I have no idea about it yet.
If I’m going to spend the money on the plants I’d rather do a really good job and get a great result.
Would love to do more in the future myself though.
Just my thinking, all your planting looks awesomn
