  • Doug's back again and I just keep adding jobs on for him while he's here.
    Amazing changes ahead though!

    Always enjoy my daily dose of NZ farming and seeing what life is like out there. Plus the growing up on a jersey farm in WA (washington state US, not western AU,) I have a soft spot for jerseys. Thanks for all the great content. Have a question about that gate you were explaining angle adjustment with. With the hinges I noticed the hook part faces up not down, on the top one. Have you ever had problems with a rowdy cow or bull popping it off? I'm curious because my grandpa taught me to point them down and other farmers around me do the same thing.

    Good to see the adjustable hammer getting a workout. People say us livestock farmers are rough on gear but I don't know what they're talking about 🤣.

    Isn't banging in posts so therapeutic sometimes... Just like using a wood splitter... A good job done and a bit of fun... As long as we all know what we are doing 👍

    Did the concrete strainer get removed? Looks like the concrete strainer gave a long time economic term of duty though.

    Nicely done… can I ask a random question? What do you do with an animal that unfortunately dies? Call a rendering plant, dig a hole, or light a fire. I’ve been looking for a smaller scale farm, and I’m thinking a fire is the best method… mind you I’m not originally from NZ, so I know your laws may be different. Thanks

      I burry them most of the time, there is a company that picks them up but it costs quite a bit.
      I have seen people burry them and turn them into compost which works well to i think

      We only have 10 beef cows and we bury them. Never tried fire but can see many problems with it.

      The NZ Regional Councils have rules relating to many aspects of farming in their regions. E.g for the Waikato "Farmer’s guide to environmental rules in the Waikato region". There is a section on 'Dumps and Offal holes'. For small holdings, Farmers Mutual Group have a series of online guides 'Your first Lifestyle Block' etc and there appears to still be an nz 'Lifestyle Block' online discussion forum. Clean air rules in NZ do not favour the general use of 'outbreak' type funeral pyres with coal, used tyres, straw bales, wood etc.

    Milk buyer decides how to put up fence?

    • @TheOnceADayFarmer
      @TheOnceADayFarmer  3 місяці тому

      Not decides but there’s definitely rules around where and how, we all need to meet the standards other wise they may not pick it up.

      It's to do with on farm water quality and reducing animal contaminants in the water. More wires mean it is less likely for the animal to breach the fence and poop in the drain which leads to larger bodies of water, such as the lake at the bottom of Andrews farm.
