A chance for me to show off my Flight Vanguard electric ukulele and Barefaced Reality 112 FR cab.
If you are new to the electric ukulele, this is for you! A very basic guide to plectrums and picks. On how to pick / pluck the strings of a steel string ukulele and a quick look at strumming your solid body, electric ukulele.
You need to be much light with both your right hand and left hand techniques and I show you how.

Brilliant Rachel, please keep these Electric Solid Body Uke tutorials coming as there are so few on the Internet. It is so different to playing nylon string Ukes and you explain it so well, thank you.

I would love to see more of these also!!!! I just got a flight centurion and i am struggling to figure out how to learn the more electric-specific techniques 🥲 i almost feel like i should just buy an electric guitar also to learn the foundation but that seems….extravagant hahahah
Afternoon Rachel, and thank you. You are an answer to my prayers, as I have been scouring youtube, chat rooms and music shops (all to no avail - apart from your intro to riffs vids) trying to find out how to play my lovely Flight Vanguard that my beautiful wife bought for me. This is exactly the information and tutorial that I was(and I'm sure many other new solid Electric uke owners) been looking for. Diocletian yn fawr Scott. Yes, will definitely be doing more as there seems to be a lack of info playing these as they are relatively newcomers to the Uke scene.
Just got my first solid body and this video has given me so much confidence and good tools to start to transition my skills :D Thank you so much! The single note, alternate pick got me. I'll be working on that! Such a good exercise.

Thanks Michael. I’ve only really used a pick on bass when I’ve had to but yes, do have some experience. It’s the much lighter picking that has taken me a little getting used to. 👍
Once again, a great video Rachel. Interesting about the plectrums, I like to use flexible ones, but if I'm just playing to myself or practicing I use a soft felt plectrum. It sounds quite nice, but most of all, I don't annoy the neighbours lol.

You just saved my life!!!! Recently I bought myself a Clearwater electric ukulele (I want the Risa LP Black but omg they're pricey!!!) and I felt the experience super different than playing on an acoustic ukulele. The electric guitar was too big for me, so the electric ukulele is the perfect swapping!!! I just love the curious looks when I take it to the music shop to buy new pedals.

Have thought about doing a video on steel strings on the ukulele? I want to change them but I cannot find how! It seems that steel strings for the ukulele simply aren't being sold individually!
@@karuveenbahn4765 yes, I will do a vid on string changes very soon. Basically you use the first 4 strings of a guitar set. I don’t think I’ve seen special uke steel strings sold individually. What colour Clearwater have you got? I always liked the green. 😎

I got the sunburst one, because my ideal ukulele is probably a black one, so I thought that if I bought a different Clearwater now I have an excuse to buy the stunning Risa... 😎😎 (And also because I only could find the sunburst one in a second hand shop here in Spain... The Clearwater brand is out of stock everywhere!!)

Most people starting will get on better with a more flexible pick especially for just strumming. Where you get into picking single notes then a little stiffer pick is often better. Still goes to the person's preference but that a general guide for picks. Of course there a lot more to it as a person advances.

You described me exactly during the intro for this vid in the first 45 seconds. Been playing a traditional ukulele for about 5 years and loved the look/idea of a solid steel string so I ordered one from Fanner and it has been sitting untouched because I have no idea how to play it properly. Thank you for this video - you are the only one I have found on the internet who is teaching this

Another great lesson! Thanks Rachel! On the ukulele, I usually strum with my thumb or finger pick using Travis picking, so the plectrum feels very strange to me. I suppose that means I need some focused practice. I look forward to your future lessons.

Very good tutorial. A few months ago I bought a flight pathfinder and this video helps me learn to play it. I hope one day you publish a video tutorial with a song to learn how to play a riff or strum with solid electric ukulele. A song the rock or another. Thanks.

Perfect timing Rachel! I just finished building my DIY steel stringer a couple of days ago. And yes, it is very different compared to the nylon stringers I've got. I haven't used a pick with nylons but with the steel it really seems like the way to go. Especially with single notes as it is hard to get a consistent touch with fingertips on the very thin and tight E and A strings. So, I'm looking forward to seeing more videos on the subject. Meanwhile, practice, practice, practice... :)

Hi Rachel, thanks for the video very informative, have played acoustic uke for about three and half years, still not very good but love playing at home and with our ukulele band. I often use a leather plectrum and love the sound they make too.

Wow! Your new Barefaced cab with the Hughes & Kettner Spirit of Vintage amp sounds fantastic! I'm having a lot of fun with my Yamaha THR30ii, which sounds great, too, given its inherent limitations. As desktop modeling amps go, it's awesome and perfect for my needs. Still ... I will admit it ... I covet your rig! 😍
Hi Jules, so glad to hear you are having fun with the Yamaha, I did look at them and they sound hreat, fair play. Yes I'm loving the Barefaced cab although there is a noticable hiss from the Hughes and Kettner, defo the amp as I tried the Genzler bass amp and it's silent, only noticable though no uke is being played. Not going to rush but I'm sure I'll try getting a different head in the future, maybe a Tube head???
@@UkuleleWales You may recall I returned that same amp head along with a cheap H&K cab. My opinion is that your Barefaced deserves a nice tube amp, for sure! 👍🏻😊
I recently got the Flight pathfinder, since i came from a cavaquinho, i found that i don't enjoy picks on either and since i let the nails on my index and thumb grow, i have been having more success using the cavaquinho tecnics and the change wasn't very noticeble, but i started with steel strings to begin with. the only thing that i found strange was the neck thickness😁😘
That is great to hear you pluck the strings with your fingers, I suppose it is a little easier if you are used to the steel strings. I don't play the guitar so steel string ukuleles were new to me and I am still very much learning with them.

Maybe I missed, but you didn't speak of muting of unwanted strings. I guess your saving that till later. Good lesson for those just starting. Myself I came from guitar to the Ukulele. So I am discovering what different about the ukulele compared to guitar.

The steel strings do make for a very different style but now I’m getting used to them, I am loving it. I love the sound of the baritone so complete get you obsession. Good luck with the action adjustment, please ask if you get stuck. 👍

Hi what kind of of electric ukulele for a small person like me. I have tiny hands I don't know what to get ?
Have a look for a Risa LP soprano as that would be great for smaller hands being a soprano size. They are difficult to find but you do sometimes see them on EBay, Facebook and Reverb second hand.
What are the gain and volume on the ukulele set at?
Hi Paul, the volume is at max and the other control is tone and is set more towards the bass end rather than treble.

Yes, there a=have been electric ukes around for a while but they do seem to have become much more popular recently.
What's the tuning and is it impossible to tune it to standard GCBA
Generally these are tuned to Low G, C, E, A. I've just mentioned the high G ' low G in another comment. Hope it helps.
how do pickups work with nylon strings
Hi Chris, the nylon strings work with a piezo pickup which normally sits underneath the saddle of the ukulele. The solid body electric ukuleles tend to have steel strings so work with normal magnetic pickups but of course the nylon strings won't work with these.
