    While this comment does not apply specifically to this ukulele, I do hope Flight is reading the comments. I had encouraged my local guitar shop to become a Hal Leonard dealer and begin stocking Flight ukuleles. I ordered a Spirit and waited for it for over a year. When it arrived it had intonation issues all over, so the shop owner sent it back for an exchange. The next one arrived with a terrible, hazy finish in the headstock, and a third one had the same problem! Keep both they offered?!? How about sending the ukulele I had ordered???I’m so extremely disappointed, having watched many UA-camrs receive their Spirit and be “in love” (so much that Peter Moss had his signature ukulele modeled after the Spirit). This experience has tainted my view of Flight, and I have chosen to put my money elsewhere. I used to recommend the brand based on UA-cam reviews, but now, with personal experience, I keep my mouth shut and keep my fingers from typing…until today, that is. Baz, thank you for your honest review.

    Thanks for the review. I was really looking forward to this one. I don't own an electric ukulele and was thinking about getting one. There are a lot on the market right now to choose from. Flight does make nice looking instruments. Being from Maryland, USA and living 38 miles (about 61 km) from the PRS factory, I was leaning towards this one. More research is needed before I get one.

      Thing about QC on my reviews - i'm aware that there will be good examples and a bad example is not necessarily representative. It does say something about brand QC though. I spoke to the stores that deal these in the UK and they both say they more often than not need work

    Thanks for the review. Haven't watched for a while as I haven't been in the market for a new uke lately. But having a RISA, I like to see what else is out there in the electric magnetic pick up world. Yes they are a different creature. Ones amps and various settings play so much of a role. I did buy from a reputable dealer. Went with the RISA because they were in stock--really liked the Tele body---and wanted both the double and single coil pickups.
    The Vanguard should make a lot of people happy.

    I’m an old folkie, and I’ve never used an amp. This means I’m not really the target customer for this uke. However, I always enjoy seeing the many choices available, so thanks for this review. I agree with you about the need to buy from a “real” ukulele dealer, and I caution that not all music stores understand the ukulele, even if they are experts on guitars. I’ve also discovered that even if you buy from a reputable dealer/luthier via mail order, you might have to find someone local to lay hands on it. I won’t share any names, but that has been my experience several times. As always, thanks, Baz! You are always the first place I look for ukulele advice.

      @@GotAUkulele I will have to wait awhile to get it. I am still having a lot of fun with the Flight Centurian Gold Top Les Paul-style tenor. No rough edges on the neck. Smooth as a baby's arse. The pickups are a noticable improvement from the Vorson. My only complaints is minor. I'm not a fan of the pickup switcher but that is minor and the strings are not the best. but, those are minor things. The strings i can change and the switcher i can live with. The Centurian is simular to your review of the PRS-style. My Centurian did'nt need muck in setup out of the box. .As far.the Vanguard it is indeed on my wish list. perhaps next year some time.

The strings look a little close to the edge on the nut. Hard to tell without holding it I guess. The fretboard mark on the 8th kind of look burnt like it stopped moving through a dull sander or router. That model made me hesitate on getting my centurion. But the LP style in vintage burst sucked me in.
    My first centurion had horribly sharp frets poking through the binding in spots and a couple minor issues. I hesitantly sent it back to the mass retailer. I was hesitating because I enjoyed playing it so much. I ended up going through a uke store for the replacement. The frets are wonderful but the setup is on the high side....and one pickup was way hotter out of the box. Like you said, choose your dealer wisely.

I'll probably wind up getting a traditional or an electro acoustic now instead. As nice as it would be to rock out with distortion, it's not actually why I picked up the ukulele. So I guess this electric ukulele gets the guitarist in me feeling like wow, when I might as well just play my guitar with the capo on the 5th fret If I want an electric ukulele sound. Doing QC in China has taught me many things, I think they probably did use a 3rd party QC, unfortunately, there's no repercussions when things go wrong, factory paying local inspectors off, factory putting their own checked units infront of the order list, so the QC guy will choose them first, there's a absolute myriad of tricks factories and 3rd party QC's can play on the customer.

    I think the issue isn’t that people value price over quality, but rather that people who aren’t experienced musicians don’t know everything that goes into an instrument being good or not and all of the ways it can go wrong. Why pay extra at a specialty store when you can get the same product for less on eBay or Amazon? I wish more people realized the need to educate themselves before they get into it, for their sake. It’s a frustrating thing seeing beginners spend their money on ukes that don’t serve them well.

    I know many people can't stand Amazon because it's such a behemoth and for other reasons, but can I say one thing in their defense? I have never had a problem getting a refund or returning merchandise to Amazon if something was wrong with what was purchased, and I assume they stand by the ukuleles they sell, as disappointing and frustrating as it may be to get a shoddy product

      Not a great defence in my opinion - more waste, more transport, more energy.

    Excellent video, but I don't like this kind of ukulele. For me it's not a ukulele. It's just a small electric guitar.

      Plays and feels very different to a guitar but I take your point

      Yes,I love these electric ukes but they do not seem to have the same air about them as a 'proper' uke.I just put a capo on an electric at the 5th fret and you have a uke fretboard,a bit wider yes I agree

    Thanks for the review. I dont agree on the intonation though. If you are considering to buy a Vanguard you will need to set it up properly. The action is high, the intonation isn't set and it is particularly bad at the nut, where the break angles aren't right. So everything sounds wrong unless you buy it from somewhere who sets it up or you know how to do it.
    I will try to fix it myself and see if I get around it.

    You literally said you bought it through a channel to get it without checking, then complained about the state of it 😂
    You should have got it from Flight directly and then complained about it. Alternatively, you could have brought it to the custom shop to make it user ready.
    Do you think cars go from factory to consumer without a technical and cosmetic check up? 😂
    Blame your vendor, not the producer.

      Good lord... The point being demonstrated here is that the core QC from Flight is not up to scratch. I've spoken to Flight dealers who tell me they need to put a lot of work into them to get them fit for sale - that's great if you are buying from those places, but Flight also choose to sell through other channels who are not - their choice, done knowingly. If they cannot get their ukes into those stores without them needing more work they need to do one of two things
      1. Stop listing them in stores who are not doing the extra work, or
      2. Get them shipped out in a better state in the first place.
      The producer / vendor relationship is one and the same thing. The producer does not absolve themselves from scrutiny just because they passed them over to a dealer. It's all part of the same supply chain.
      I've talked about this for, literally, years..
      By the way - what would be the point of me only reviewing ukuleles that had been through a thorough setup - what does that tell viewers about the instruments that didn't go through that?

    • @GotAUkulele
      @GotAUkulele  Рік тому +1

      And I bought it this way as up to this point, all Flight ukes reviewed on here were sent by Flight themselves. I do that with all brands from time to time to check what their QC is like when they don't know it's going to a reviewer.. Illuminating

    These are literally just 4 string guitars every video I see on them no one even plays them like a ukulele

    • @GotAUkulele
      @GotAUkulele  Рік тому

      What does 'like a ukulele' mean? It's just a musical instrument - surely people can play them however they like?

    Don’t take this the wrong way but by you being upset about the fretboard only shows how passionate you are about your ukulele’s which I think is a good thing. I like the passion!
