I personally am never buying a game that isn't at a minimum 60 fps. I played kirby and the forgotten land and it was so choppy, it was uncomfortable to look at at times. 60 fps should be the goal for any console since 30 fps is just headache inducing
This is surprisingly well-optimized for a semi-open world game on the Switch. Yes, textures are lower (the downgrade in res helps cover that, though) and there's less foliage. Also, an understandable cap of 30 fps vs 60 on PS5 performance mode. That sounds like a lot, but the core experience looks to be retained without hard-hitting sacrifices. I'm impressed, Sonic Team.

When you take in the consideration of how different the systems are.... You can see they still did a very good job on the Switch version The switch: 4 core ARM CPU @ 1.02GHz (3 cores usable apparently) 4GB LPDDR4 ram 64bit, nvidia Maxwell 2.0 with 256 shading cores the PS5: 8 core x86-64 CPU @3.5 GHz SMT, 16GB GDDR6 SDRAM; 256-bit (unified), AMD RDNA 2.0 with 2304 (out of 2560 SMs) enabled. of course the system storage plays in, but the PS5s is faster. The switch is old, but is also a hybrid system focusing on making the docked and handheld parts of the system equal (plus consoles like these are hard to develop, so of course there wasn't gonna be a new one yet) So its great to see Sega pitch in the effort to make a game like this work on Switch. wow, really impressive. not too much differences between the two versions. the only problem I've heard people talk about is the pop in. definitely gonna get this on my switch!
Thank you for that. Ps5 showed incredible texture in grass and rocks, and frame rates excellent. While switch has low res graphic, and slow frame rate. However, for those really into to go playing time, it wouldn't matter
A complaint I remember is they made what the switch could handle and used that for every system and I see why they look a lil to similar which is a tad bit annoying because the game could work better for consoles but das fine I suppose game still looks fun
It's a pretty substantial downgrade, but it honestly doesn't look too bad. The resolution is the worst part. But if the framerate is good, it's worth it
It really isn't that substantial, considering this is ps5 vs the switch, which is significantly weaker than a base xbox1. I was expecting this to be borderline unplayable on switch.
Yeah what he said. This is *PS5* Vs switch not *PS4* So it's impressive. Wouldn't say substantial downgrade at all. They did a great job. Apparently they didn't just port it either they made a version with the switch in mind or something. APPARENTLY 😙
Reminds me of the borderlands 2 port for psvita. Doesn’t matter how they did it, but they made it work and it’s looks phenomenal. People have to remember too that this is a portable handheld running this. Absolute bunkers that you have this big world in such a small form factor.
Very little grass on the Switch version, and different colors even. Sonic's model also looks worse, but the game surprisingly runs well. They did their best. I wish they can patch it in all its versions to reduce that annoying pop-in.
There are few differences from a generation to another. I really miss the times when a new console has absurdly more advanced graphic capacity than the past generation. So It won't make any difference if I buy the PS4 or the PS5 version of the game.
This game wasn't designed with next gen hardware in mind. It's clear this game was made with old hardware in mind as any fucking hardware made after 2010 could run this game.
I was worried this would be God awful because Switch ports are so hit or miss but this pulls it off fairly well. Still might get it on PC instead for that slick 60fps.
Apparently the Hedgehog engine that they’ve been using since 2008, has grown to be incredibly sophisticated to perform well across all three platforms.
have you had a look at the game? it looks like dog barf on the switch. i mean, it already looks bad enough on the ps5 but... come on, the switch version looks worse than games from two generations ago.
I bought the Switch version of this game for my son for Christmas. I should've done my research first, because we put it in and both thought it looked and ran awful. I thought something in the graphic settings or my tv was messed up, so I started researching why it looked so bad and pixelated. That's how I stumbled across this video. Went to the playstation store and ordered the PS5 digital version for him instead. The difference is night and day. 1000 times better on PS5.
Pleasantly surprised by the comparison shots here. If a game like this can run on Switch, on what is effectively five year old portable hardware, then it shows developers can compress and code efficiently when they want to.
Switch fix, if you change the camera distance lower in the game settings menu it will make sonic's model look better and not so rough on the edges. The closer the better he looks. Made it a little better for me
People are complaining about Pokemon SV's framerate, but that game doesn't have speed as one of its key features, nor does it have something to directly compare it to.
Well it certainly doesn't reflect the big hardware differences between both machines so good job on the switch version by Sega. I'm glad to have the fastest thing in gaming back with a good 3d game after so long.

I have played both versions Xbox series x and switch I have to say I’m surprised how wel it actually runs on switch don’t get me wrong it isn’t the best looking on the switch but for what it is it is pretty solid
I got the switch version. It was absolutely terrible. It doesn't look as bad on this video as when you actually play it in real life. I couldn't believe it. I was assuming it would at least be similar to breath of the wild but even that looked way better. I returned it and got it for series x. It's significantly better which makes sense considering the power of the series x but was still disappointed with the switch.
That's weird, I just played through both simultaneously and did not feel as through the Xbox Series X version was much better. I mean yes it obviously looked better, but not enough for me to say the "next gen" versions are by far the best ways to play this game compared to Switch. I'm surprised actually even the PS4/Xbox One versions are also capped at 30 fps too. Both versions had the same serious problem - really really bad popup. There were several points where platforms weren't showing up in the Xbox version until I was right next to them! I've never seen anything like this in a Series X game before. Not to mention the colors were really drab regardless of platform, like was this really the best they could do with the color palette from these new consoles? Very muted greens compared to older titles, etc. This whole game is a mess regardless of platform, man. This makes that Sonic Colors Remaster look good.
Yep even better than the PS5 version too. PS5 ver. reports a lot of pop in. That’s absolutely crazy but true. Next Gen has a problem with how fast Sonic can move. 😂

*GameXplain
This fool really thought it ran at 4K 60 😂🤣😂🤣
I'm really impressed with how well the Switch version of the game is!
I could buy it on PC, but I barely have time to play at home... The Switch version is looking good enhough and the performance is within the console capacity, then it will be on Switch.
I’m getting it on PS4, apparently it only runs at 30 fps on it but whatever as long as there aren’t too many drops.
wow, really impressive. not too much differences between the two versions. the only problem I've heard people talk about is the pop in. definitely gonna get this on my switch!
Thank you for that. Ps5 showed incredible texture in grass and rocks, and frame rates excellent. While switch has low res graphic, and slow frame rate. However, for those really into to go playing time, it wouldn't matter
I'm actually enjoying on the switch so far. Going to get it for the ps5 next month
The open-zone got a massive hit, but the stages and cutscenes on Switch are surprisingly close to the PS5 version.
i played the switch version and.........
it is great and it does not have too much problems running on switch. even the giganto boss runns great
UA-cam's crappy video compression makes both versions look murky, so not good example to compare IMO
A complaint I remember is they made what the switch could handle and used that for every system and I see why they look a lil to similar which is a tad bit annoying because the game could work better for consoles but das fine I suppose game still looks fun
Switch Version is definitely a bit crusty, but it holds itself very well.
Tip: for the ps5 version put it in 60 fps mode it looks so good but there is still pop in
This footage is set to the 60 fps mode
Got it on steam as I can play on my Deck as well. Has some slight issues but still very impressive
This game is a masterpiece
9/10
Not really, but considering you've been saying that for every Sonic game in the past 10 years I dont blame you.
@@Oh-Ben
The game is pretty damn sick tho
@@jesuspernia8031 Its sick if youve forced yourself to play Sonic games for 20 years. I know the Sonic scale.
@@Oh-Ben
What fucking gibberish are you even going on about? I’m saying that I think Frontiers is really good.
There are few differences from a generation to another. I really miss the times when a new console has absurdly more advanced graphic capacity than the past generation. So It won't make any difference if I buy the PS4 or the PS5 version of the game.
There is a big difference between ps4 and ps5 still, it's just that Sonic Frontiers was made to be playable on weaker hardware
This game wasn't designed with next gen hardware in mind. It's clear this game was made with old hardware in mind as any fucking hardware made after 2010 could run this game.
Exactly
@@JustMLC not really
I was worried this would be God awful because Switch ports are so hit or miss but this pulls it off fairly well. Still might get it on PC instead for that slick 60fps.
Get it on pc for mods
@@retrogamer64007 "mighty" lol, or just PC so the fan base can fix it
@@Oh-Ben yup, same thought. I love it so far, but there's little quality fixes I'm hoping the fans will take into their own hands down the line!
I managed to find a ps5 at target for the normal price. Can't wait to play this on there!
It’s pretty amazing how it runs on switch
Can’t imagine playing a sonic game at 30fps
Well done to the Dev team on the switch version of Sonic, it's impressive considering the HW is eight years old.
I'm quite impressed, looks great considering the specs of the switch.
Apparently the Hedgehog engine that they’ve been using since 2008, has grown to be incredibly sophisticated to perform well across all three platforms.
@@whaleping I guess that would make sense for a engine that was originally made for the X360/PS3 to scale well to similarly powered hardware.
@@whaleping well this isn’t the same engine actually this is the hedgehog engine 2 which has stuff like better lighting and materials
Another solid port it seems. Good! This might be the first Sonic game I buy in.. more than a decade or so.
It understandably looks worse but whatever is keeping the game from choking the console to death has me very impressed
have you had a look at the game? it looks like dog barf on the switch. i mean, it already looks bad enough on the ps5 but... come on, the switch version looks worse than games from two generations ago.
@@GraveUypo what the fuck you saying Bro?
I bought the Switch version of this game for my son for Christmas. I should've done my research first, because we put it in and both thought it looked and ran awful. I thought something in the graphic settings or my tv was messed up, so I started researching why it looked so bad and pixelated. That's how I stumbled across this video. Went to the playstation store and ordered the PS5 digital version for him instead. The difference is night and day. 1000 times better on PS5.
And then the whole class stood up and clapped. And God himself even came down and gave your son a medal.
@@gligarguy4010 How'd you know?😮
@@majorbalrah Because God and I were having lunch together just the other day, and were discussing things that totally happened.
ive been playing on switch and the pop in is hillarious
1:11 Wow, that stunned me.
It's like watching a sonic unleashed wii vs ps3 comparison
The switch version is the most pre ordered version on Amazon best sellers list.
If only Pokémon ran this well on the switch.
Well it certainly doesn't reflect the big hardware differences between both machines so good job on the switch version by Sega. I'm glad to have the fastest thing in gaming back with a good 3d game after so long.
Switch version not looking as bad as people were expecting. It looks much better than a lot of Switch ports!
All they had to do was get someone to mow the lawn and boom, Sonic Frontiers on Switch.
If I was to get it , it will be on PS5 or x box series x, I looks fuzzy on switch to me idk, even though I've been playing my OLED little more lately I still want it to look better
This feels like playing the handheld version of a console game.
Examples are the video games based on film and tv shows or like the tomb raider legend trilogy, or like Pac Man World 3
For the switch's standards, this actually doesn't look so bad
The game was created to fit the switch capabilities and no the other way around. It was like pouring porting the game from the switch to ps5.
I think it's not a fair comparison. Everything is completely different in these two platforms
So who keeps the grasses trim and clean?🤔
Can we get a more advanced version of the Hedgehog Engine?
The next Sonic game must have a more complex engine to create something that feels Next-Gen
Grass and lighting are the usual suspects for downgrades and that seems to be true here.
I really wish someone could tell me if the PS5 version uses haptic feedback. I haven't been able to get an answer you could be the first!
I quoted SA2 doing the first little level lol
“NO FOOD OR MOVIES!? I’M OUTTA HERE!”
Other than looking a little crusty, the Switch version looks great! Content with my purchase
Wow the switch version is actually running smoother than the steam deck version
For now ...
Yep even better than the PS5 version too. PS5 ver. reports a lot of pop in. That’s absolutely crazy but true. Next Gen has a problem with how fast Sonic can move. 😂
@@JMrealgamer the switch has pop in as well
delusional nintendo fan detected
There's a steam deck version?
Damn I thought they'd cut a lot of corners but it's rly just less fps and resolution. I'm thoroughly impressed!
