I remember watching this as a child in the beginning of the 90's, I didn't understand it but it had cats! I now love it as an adult because it's meaningful, odd & cats!
It is so surreal to hear Paul Frees as a cat with a French accent. That final "Meow" is hilarious in that it doesn't even try to sound like a meow - he's just SAYING "meow". And all I can imagine is the Ghost Host going "MEEEEOWWWW" to spite the One-Eyed Black Cat.
I saw this as a child..I am 66 Female and Black..oh I grew up in Oaktown...my Brother and I would always say the Money cat knows where the money tree grows..love the he'll out of this movie...
I first watched this movie back in 1983. I was five at the time and had it on Beta. Later in 85' my mother found it on VHS after Beta was no more. 30 years later I still own that VHS and still watch this movie from time to time, (yes I still have a VCR). :)
I always thought that this song was worthy of an Academy award nomination...to me it had a Broadway musical quality to it...in animated motion picture 😉
Very good job fellows throughout the 2nd Parisian togetherness week of said surfside June!! Bravissimo 766%. It is so surreal and splendorous to hear Paul Frees as a cat with a French accent. Not only that, but the other four cats are played by the Mellomen, a musical quartet that included Thurl Ravenscroft, who is the deep-voiced lead singer (as Uncle Theodore the Singing Bust) for Grim Grinning Ghosts at the Haunted Mansion.
That was actually a great number (as was Ray Bolger’s eliminated scarecrow dance) and even Margaret Hamilton herself regretted “The Jitterbug”not being used…supposedly the Oz creators thought it would “date” the film! And there’s still that line in the film where the witch says she sent out a little insect to take the “fight” out of Dorothy and her friends. At least the animated made for video Tom and Jerry Oz film paid it homage by deservedly including it!
I have to strongly disagree with Animat when it comes to the songs in this film. They're honestly really lovely and I can remember as a child getting hyped when they'd show this on Cartoon Network simply because I loved the music so much.
It was directed by Abe Levitow who had worked closely on many projects with Chuck Jones. Jones and his wife Dorothy wrote the script and many of the character designs were undoubtedly styled by him as well.
Correct! He was under exclusive contract with Warner Brothers. He and his wife at the time, Dorothy, wrote the screenplay. When the production company, UPA, shopped the movie around for a distributor they found themselves a buyer in Warner Brothers. When Warner Brothers, in July 1962, agreed to distribute the animated movie at some later date (eventually released in December 1962) they discovered Chuck Jones had worked on the movie in violation of his exclusive contract. Warner Brothers fired Chuck in July and laid off his animation unit. Then, several months later, Chuck took over an existing company and re-titled it Sib-Tower Twelve Productions. Les Goldman was a partner. Chuck hired almost all of the animators and layout artists from his previous animation unit at Warner Brothers to work at the new company. MGM contracted him and the animation company to produce/direct a new series of "Tom and Jerry" cartoons. Sib-Tower Twelve ended in 1970...and then Chuck launched Chuck Jones Film Productions and made a lengthy list of made for TV animated specials. Some of those specials were adaptations of Rudyard Kipling stories and a series of specials using the 'Cricket in Times Square' characters.
@@ACcountryFan And if it weren't for Chuck being fired from Warner Bros and going to MGM, we wouldn't have "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" (1966) or "The Phantom Tollbooth" (1970)

If only Warner Bros allowed their studio to work on the film, instead of UPA. Chuck Jones was involved by writing it, therefore, Warner Bros fired him. One of Chuck's former animators, Abe Levitow, who by then was already at UPA, directed it.
Yes-and ironically Warner Bros wound up distributing it! But years later Warners asked Jones to return after his many successes. I wanted to talk to him once at an animation event and I met him,but as much as I wanted to bring up this film I thought maybe he wouldn’t want to discuss it… I was interested for example in mentioning a production photo I’d seen with Robespierre being admired by a young female cat…the sequence ends the Gold Key comic book but curiously the scene was intended for the film’s final scene and never used. The young feline character even appears recently in the dvd production notes images.

"Money cat can buy up anyone who's high up". Wow... didn't get that at all as a kid. I appreciate this more now.
Same
This was a very under rated animation movie and unfairly panned by critics leading to no one seeing it or appreciating it.
Saw it for the first time yesterday, and I agree; it was great!
@@jmh27 Glad you enjoyed it!
I saw it when it came out, have it on DVD.
@alandhopewellW here did you get it from, and what region is it? I only have it on VHS and would love to have it on DVD
I remember seeing it as a kid, and I still like it. I think that this was one of Judy's greatest films.

Even though he's a sleaze, he has a certain charm that is very.......alluring. Meowrice, you are amazing.
An alluring charm is EXACTLY what makes a good conman, or cat.
Amazing singing performance by the legendary GHOST HOST fella Paul Frees!!!!

Splendafabulous performance by the legendary Paul Frees!!
This year marks the film's 60th anniversary
One of my all-time favorite animated movies from the 60s-Gay Purr-ee. Loved this song!!
I've been wanting to watch this movie since 2012 but I kept forgetting about it, finally watched it last night.
I remember rewatching this movie in middle school and this song was stuck in my head
Paul Frees probably had a blast recording in this picture
What creeps me out the most in the film as a kid is those black cats because all you can see their yellow eyes and great, grinning, white teeth.
Envious Green Yeah, they are pretty scary, but sometimes they are funny. That's the way Chuck Jones cartoons work
Those guys gave me the creeps too.
Yes....this creeped me out too!
I always thought they were rats not cats 🐈⬛
Even though the cats are creepy in the song but I still have a love for cats
The money cat knows where the money tree grows!
This movie is very underrated and drawing is real artwork
Notice how Meowrice's shadow and his throne make him look like the Devil? I never noticed that before.
I SOOOOOOO miss this movie, it used to be on TV all the time when I was little and now I can't find it anywhere!

Hasta que volví a verla!!!, que hermosa es esta película.
I've been watching this movie since I was three.
The nostalgia is literally blinding
Cats before it was on Broadway.
Ken Harris did some of the Scenes in this sequence. Thurl Ravenscroft is one of the Singers.
Now here's a movie I haven't thought about in about ten years.
Meowrice was a Pimp....and a trafficker, holy SHIT.
He was the pimp, a trafficker (cause he tried to ship Mewsette to that cat in Pennsylvania as a mail order bride for money 😅), a fixer, maybe a hitman and... Yeah if you think it he can do it basically 🤣
Yup, the villain of Felidae may be the only cat villain worse then him in these classic old animated films.
The cute black cat 🐈⬛ chorus reminds me of Luci from Disenchantment
I too have not seen this movie since I was a child and this was on cartoon network. They don't do the cn cinema anymore
Christopher Llewellyn Very sad that Cartoon Network doesn't show this movie anymore :(
Wait a minute. They showed this on Cartoon Network?
GazpachoMacho It was a long time ago, maybe 14-15 years ago if memory serves me right...
GazpachoMacho yes that's how i first saw it. They also used to have some great programs including o canada late night black and white and toon heads.
You can tell this was directed by Chuck Jones
Music-wise AND animation-wise
Chuck Co wrote the film but he didn't direct it. His long time animator Abe Levitow was the actual director.
I have recently discovered this wonderful gem of a movie. I love it. ❤
Love hearing Thurl Ravenscroft and The MelloMen when they sing as the henchmen.
Allow me to introduce myself, Meowrice Badenov at your service!
Gay Purree tackles some really crazy topics in hindsight. Such as human trafficking.
Yup, Meowrice is basically a cat version of a sex trafficker and a pimp.
And suicide. See Paris is a Lonely Town.
I had this movie memorized when I was younger. Loved it so much, and was always a big fan of Chuck Jones! Thank you for posting!
I remember seeing this movie in the 70s and not in its entirety since.
Just had a thought: I wonder if this song inspired the expression 'put the money in the kitty'? ;)
Also, Meowrice is creepy, but his assistants are amusing. I especially like the way they smile and talk.
That sums up the trope Vile Villain, Laughable Lackey from the website TV Tropes.
this movie in english is called "Gay Purr-e" . The voice of the protgonist is by Gudy Garland...
And the villain is voiced by Paul Frees
Quando criança eu assisti muito a esse filme ❤ amo

there are two e's. "Gay Purr-ee" and Judy Garland. I love this song!
Paul frees is the man or should I say the ghost host with the most.
I loved this film as a kid but it's kind of a chore to get through now. Its kind of all over the map tone- and quality-wise.
I think I just found the REAL inspiration for the character of Dr. Facilier...
This is amazing, thank you
Love this flick
Don't forget Robert Goulet- he did Jean Tom's voice.
Still better than the movie, Cats.
Capitalism in a nutshell?
Parts of where he was sitting looked more like a thron
final found where boba got her jingel from
i think the guy who voices meowrice also does the voice at dinsey's haunted mansion ride.
He was also the teacher from Boy Meets World.
I think he is alsothe burgermiester in Santa Claus is coming to town
Balto Now that you mention that he DOES sound like Burgermeister Meisterburger...that name is still so freaking funny to hear...I want to see a food joint have that as an option on the menu "Yeah I'll have one Meisterburger and a large fry."

It's Paul Frees. He died in 1986, but did tons of voices for many animated movies and holiday specials.
Not only that, but the other four cats are played by the Mellomen, a musical quartet that included Thurl Ravenscroft, who is the deep-voiced lead singer (as Uncle Theodore the Singing Bust) for Grim Grinning Ghosts at the Haunted Mansion.
This Movie Is From The Studio That Brought You The Pink Panther And Alvin And The Chipmunks.
It's interesting to compare this with "The Jitterbug" number that was cut from "The Wizard of Oz." One can hear the same sort of rhythms....
That was actually a great number (as was Ray Bolger’s eliminated scarecrow dance) and even Margaret Hamilton herself regretted “The Jitterbug”not being used…supposedly the Oz creators thought it would “date” the film! Dicks meant policemen.
Hey it's Scourge!
is it only me or anyone else can hear this sound in candyman?

Yeah, Thurl, in addition to doing the Mellomen backing vocals, has a solo at 0:57
