Just traded my Tacoma TRD Sport for a 2024 TRD Pro.Same color. I've just retired and am setting it up to go to as many National Parks as possible. I wanted the 4Runner because - quite frankly - I was tired of sleeping in the bed of the truck. This review Just crushed it. Crazily comprehensive. No agenda...just honest facts and perspective on what I want to but. Thank you.
I loved this video. I am a big 4runner fan but this video just reinforced all of my beliefs about it. You even pointed out things that I did not have the words to describe. You know your stuff and loved every second of it.
Somethings to know, the lever for 4WD instead of a dial on other 4Runner models helps in that the dial frequently won't engage 4WD if already on a slope, and probably has issues with corrosion in the engagement after years of non-use. One other thing, there is a KDSS feature that comes on a few 4Runners that comes from Landcruiser tech. It helps with reducing nosedive and tilting when braking or taking corners, and functions as an automatic sway-bar release when off-roading. The radar sensor in front is nice, unless you want to install a winch in front which will have to somehow not obstruct the radar beam.
Great vehicle. I have the 2022. TRD ORP and could not be happier. Just got first oil change at 5,000 miles. Learned a couple things I didn’t know about on the vehicle watching the video so thank you for that.
One of the BEST overviews I have seen ! I will be looking into one of these. Tough time right now to think about getting a T4R. Great video and THANK YOU for doing one on the ORP and going through t so well ! Wish I were closer to your dealership. Great level of info and nice video skills. Nothing jerky or shaky.. love it !
I just purchased the TRD Offroad Premium. It has the raised hood scoop that catches the sun just wrong towards evening and and blinds the driver. I pulled up to a traffic signal and could not see the signal. I have already ordered the flat black sticker with TRD Off Road written on it to stop that reflection. It's dangerous without it. Pulling the shade down does not help. Etsy has the stickers.
Everything you mentioned in this vid is what has driven me to the 4runner. Been coveting these for over a year and I’ve also decided on the ORP. Hopefully I’ll be ordering a 22 in lunar or army green at the end of the year. One of the biggest selling points for me is the fact that they are still manufactured in one of two plants in Japan, by the best craftsmen in the world. Toyota quality is second to none.
I cant wait!! I’m looking to get this exact trim. I love it!! I have a Rottie, he loves road trips. I like knowing I can take this for long road trips, camping or to the beach. I can have a “premium” lux feel, whilst still knowing I can rough it up a bit through rouged terrain, snow, sand, mountainous roads, etc. Thank you for this review!!
Great review! The most thorough description of the instruments/buttons I've seen in any review. Expecting delivery of my 2022 TRD Off Road Premium next month. Thank you!
This is the exact vehicle Im looking at right now. TRD Premium in magnetic grey. 2023 maybe the last year for the 4Runner before the re-design. Great review by the way!
Very informative. Thank you! Im a SUV truck style girl had a couple mitsubishi Endeavors . They stopped making them and now in the market for that suv/truck style with 4wheel drive... Very few to choose from now. Been research the few there is out there. I love the look of the 4Runner but didnt want it to be all about the look. But After you shared the most helpful review overview ... etc.. helped me make my decision and the Toyota 4Runner is definately the one for me
Thank you so much for this terrific video! We should be getting our 2023 TRD Off-Road the middle of May, same color. My wife has very little patience for anything technical. Your content was perfect and the photography was impressive. I couldn’t have asked for a better walk around tour and button explanation. Our rig will be arriving with Premium Audio which is a huge mystery to me. I have yet to find a concise explanation of what it is and why it’s a $1k upgrade. I think all it adds is maps.
Thanks for watching and congrats! I’m so glad to help. Premium audio adds integrated navigation, I believe gracenote (makes audio more clear) but does not add on JBL speakers.
Very nice video, the first of yours I have seen, Brian. Well organized, good camera work, not a lot of editing jumps and flipping back and forth - nice easy to follow flow. However, I'm currently driving a Highlander, so that comment about a dress really hurt! 🙂 I am old school and like the A/C controls on the 4R much more than the Highlander. I think I'll be changing from the Highlander to the 4Runner as soon as I can find a reasonable deal.
Hey welcome to the channel! Thanks for watching and for your support. No harm meant! Highlander is a very attractive SUV! When you get your 4runner please write to me and let me know how you like it!
Great review! Just picked up my 2021 Off road premium last week, enjoying it so far! You had mentioned leather interior, but I think its actually called softex. It's supposedly more durable with less cracking/scratching over time and easy to clean. I also noticed mine came with dual climate control, running boards, block heater, but no pull out tray in the cargo area. I am in Canada so it could be how they are packaged here.
When I traded in my 2015 SR5 with about 160,000kms and 7 years later, the seats and interior looked like the day it rolled off the line. It's unbelievable how good it holds up, my family were stunned too.
About to purchase a new Off Road Premium with the XP in Lunar Rock. Loved all the detail of the 4 Runner that you included. Excited to see your other videos.
We just traded our 2014 Jeep Wrangler, that I have been building up for off-road adventures for 4 years, for a 2022 4Runner TRD Off-Road that looks exactly like this one in the video and I absolutely LOVE it! I am amazed at how it drives on road and how capable it is Off-Road. And of course there is the unmatched reliability. WINNING!
Whenever I want to remind myself of the great decision to buy my magnetic gray 2023 Off Road I watch this superb review (you really did an excellent job) along with the series The Car Care Nut produced. Not that I need much reminding, lol. And while a lot of folks change out the wheels for that blacked out look I also think the stock Off Road wheels look great, especially with MGM paint.
I am lucky enough to have both. 19 4runner ORP and a 20 Tacoma off road. Wife drives the 4runner. I like to have a truck. However, if I had to choose? 4runner all day. Wouldn't even hesitate. Way more comfortable and I love the simplicity of it.
Just found your channel, one of the best reviews of the 4Runner I've seen, and Ivte watched a lot of them! You definitely know what your talking about... totally agree with you on the smoothness of the tried and true 5-speed gearbox! I owned an 88 4Runner, the one where u can remove the top...great vehicle, had 85k when I sold it back in 93', have been waiting when they come out with the next gen, but the more I think about it, it might be better to get this last gen, I don't like turbos. Thanks again for an excellent review, I subscribed to your channel!
@@brianruperti 👍 I had a 2011 V6 Camry with the 5 speed auto, it was a great transmission, smooth, unfortunately totaled it in 2018, got a Highlander with 8 speed, not the best transmission, haven't had problems with it, but it hunts at times, not smooth at all...so I can relate to your comment about the 5 sp in the 4Runner.
Great job with this video Brian it’s very helpful for me! In fact your video helped make up my mind…I’m going to buy one! Wish interest rates weren’t to the moon.
Bought a 2024 Toyota 4Runner Off Road Premium in late December and I've been loving it thus far. Wanted gray, but took white to avoid waiting for a gray.
@@brianruperti I’m considering purchasing a ‘22 4Runner Off Road (base model) with 41k on it. $36,000. Your video has sold me on the purchase provided there are no surprises in terms of damage or general condition. Thanks again!
Just bought a 2024 4 runner TRD off road premium package. It was a toss up between a new 2024 Tacoma TRD off road premium package. After much research on both vehicles. I decided on the 4 runner. I’m confident that I made the right decision. It’s a great vehicle.
Excellent! I really appreciate that you went through all the buttons and screens. I currently have a 2001 Jeep Cherokee, but it's due for retirement soon and the 4 Runner is my top choice for a replacement -- not to mention that my mechanic told me Toyota makes the best 4WD system out there. I think I'll take his advice. Thanks for such a thorough video.
You may already know this but I just found out just lately that if you want to have some fun in the snow you just can't just push the traction control button as it will kick back in at a certain wheel spin speed.. You gotta have it in park and hold the trac button and that will shut off the traction control and stability control. I didn't know this until I mentioned it to someone who knows Toyota 4Runner more than I do. If you push the Trac button it displays a trac off light. But if you hold it it says trac off and shows the truck losing traction light. Also I found out there's a notch next to the center console latch. That allow you to run a charging cable out the console closed.
The 4Runner is the best SUV you can buy, without question. I had a 2015 SR5, best vehicle I've ever owned and it was a joy to work on, so much room under the hood. Unfortunately, I had to trade it in to get a van for my family. I have an opportunity to trade in my Highlander for a '22 TRD Off-Road and I'm seriously considering it. I owe nothing on the Highlander so the responsible thing would be to keep it, but I love the 4Runner and it is SO dependable. Being responsible is boring anyways.. lol
Thank you! I have a 2023 4Runner off-road and I didn’t feel I had a great tutorial of the off road capabilities at the dealership, they referred me to the Toyota website to get a thorough understanding but that didn’t help much for all the off road features. Would you do a video specifically testing TRD off-road capabilities? There isn’t much on UA-cam about “4Runner off road tutorials” 😅 hope you can do this 🙏🏼
Got here because i just bought this exact truck, ive had it for 2 months its a 21 trd premium same color. I absolutely love it for Montana where i live. Wish it came with the trd rims though and a front cattle guard.
I currently drive a ‘21 4Runner. I’m a previous owner of a ‘17 Tacoma. I can relate to much of what you described. I am a fan of both, but do enjoy the 4Runner engine much more. Not saying it’s more powerful just much smoother power.
Luv this truck and I'm waiting for mine to arrive in a few weeks. One thing I can't figure out though, why is Toyota taking so long to upgrade the infotainment system on this vehicle? It's horribly dated and would really be enormously appreciated if they would incorporate a larger screen. They have great screens on other models, what are you waiting for, Toyota? Aside from that, I've loved this vehicle since it was introduced into the market.
I drove a 2003 4Runner sport from new and now I drive a 2022 4Runner TRD off road. Drives awesome as always but do miss the V8 engine, that is the only down fall.
That’s a tough one. If you appreciate, or even enjoy antiquated items that last forever, the 2023 is the way to go. If you enjoy new, fresh and exciting tech with updated style and safety, hold for the remodel.
Love the b roll at the end. Nobody does that to cap a video. And knowing to stay out of the way and let the rides show off. These goof balls that step into the frame drive me nuts. You've got a knack for injecting good humor and a voice like warm butter. You need to do a motivational and relaxation channel. Breath in breath out. You are the master of your destiny 😄 Didn't realize you could get a 4Runner without that little 3rd row. If only that hatch was automatic. Dig that window but man that's tough to accept for me and I gotta have the best stereo offered so I'm torn on the trim. I've got so much on the list this go round and it's like the worst time to buy right now.
Thank you so much for the kind words!!! You made my night. I might consider that! Yes the prices are tough right now but things will change! More videos to come!
Thanks for sharing the video, I am thinking to get the 4Runner TRD off Road Premium as well…. I was debating to either to get Tacoma or 4 Runner because I think 4 runner is more comfortable doer daily use. Thanks for sharing again and I think I will go for 4 runner.
Great review. I have a 2014 whit 110,000 miles y it is perfect. The only thing I would change is the gearbox, changing the A750 for the A760 used in the Lexus 460. I don't know why Yoyota never did this. Thank you
Our lunar rock TRD off road premium is arriving to our dealer in 9 days! So excited! If this design is so successful, why mess it up by changing it? No guarantee the 6th gen and beyond will be as iconic or reliable.
Just traded TRD off-road Taco for a 4Runner limited and I can see what you exactly meant by the beefier power and better transmission than taco I 💯 agree
One thing that bugs me which doesn't get mentioned in a lot of reviews, is the positioning of the rear wiper. It's off center, and even worse it's positioned for right-hand drive vehicles, not for N American vehicles.
I noticed that too but quickly forget about it because I rarely use a rear wiper anyway. I wonder if there is a market for a conversion piece for those who are more bothered by it 🤔

Hi can you use H4 on tarmac/asphalt steep twisting road / like in the highest point in georgia, i am asking this because i went there and i just use 2H, i hesitated in using H4 because its tarmac/ asphalt not offroad/dirt and i am afraid i will ruin 4wd system/ trnsmission/ transfer case, thank you, hope you give insight it will be helpful in future adventures, thank you again.
Thank you. I love KDSS because I’m not huge into lifting my vehicles. The KDSS basically lowers the body roll on road and stabilizes it. For off-roading the articulation is a bit better. But if you’re the type to lift the 4runner, stay away from KDSS because lifting a KDSS 4runner can cause a LOT of issues like increased body roll and leaning to the driver side. I also don’t recommend unplugging the KDSS like I’ve heard some people do. It can send engine codes and void warranty and trust me technicians can find out what you’re hiding if they want to. KDSS for the win if you’re daily driving it and do some rugged trailing at stock height!
Thanks what I have but didn’t want the sunroof but put more aggressive tires . I like the old school don’t what no hybrid or turbo more issues to go wrong. I wished it still had a key don’t like push button
22 4R TRD OR FTW. Which touring summer tire would you consider the best for in cabin road noise control ? Also, which dedicated winter tire would you recommend on OEM wheels? TIA
Yes! Agreed. And I’m flattered you asked! Honestly for those two options I would get on tirerack.com and just read reviews. I love anything Dunlop since you asked. I trust them. Michelin is a close second. I run the stock kevlars on my tacoma so I don’t know if a winter tire to recommend. Give me time and experience with my truck and I’ll begin favoring certain rubber! The 4R forums will have great info for you. Hope that helps!
I have a 22 TRD off-road Tacoma and I’m trading back to the dealer for a 4Runner (pending the numbers work out) I love the taco but I rented a 4Runner recently and yes.. more comfortable and the extra space inside is really nice.
the toyota dealer you go to, or work at, do they have any 2022s coming in?? and are they charging msrp ? or over msrp?? I want to purchase 1, and a family member wants one.
That would depend on the roof rack system you install. I am told 120lbs by service department but they said that would change based on what equipment and how well it was installed. It’s a grey area.
My 1993 Corolla wagon also had those rear seats that folded up and flat. I crossed the US 3 times with that wagon packed with stuff. I would love for my next vehicle to have that same feature. Is the 4Runner now the only Toyota vehicle that does? Quick question: does the TRD off road have KDSS suspension? Quick opinion: prefer physical keys. Not interested in any subscription services. I should probably go for the Rav4 (or even a Cross?), but I really like the 4Runner!

Yes thank for sharing! In my Tacoma, pressing and holding will even turn off the TSS as well. And interesting about the charger!

Thank you for the great review! My goal is to get the trd off road premium 4runner this year. I’ll be upgrading from a 2000 Ford Ranger
You’re welcome! And that’s a big upgrade! Please let me know when you get it
Nice choice that’s what I have on order in lunar rock.
I'm in the same boat. Plan on picking up a new ORP this winter/early '22 before the redesign.
@@bigd7481 I was given a 5 to 6 month wait when I ordered at the end of August here in Canada. Hope you get yours on time.
@@scrapmetal4163 Thanks for the heads up! I was thinking of waiting until December but with your experience I may go ahead and put my order in now.
Great vid's as usual. Just picked up my 2023 LR ORP Predator.... awesome so far
Congrats!!!
Just bought a 2022 4Runner! Great video! Thank you! 😁
Congrats!
Getting my off road tomorrow so excited 😁. I got it black on black with trd wheels
Nice setup congrats
You mentioned push button start/smart key fob vulnerability. I don't see the link to that video...

Great video! You did that old dinosaur justice. "If it ain't broke..... Thanks. hey future reference, video her out on the road....(or trail)
Thank you! I love them. I’ll try to! I work with limited time and can’t take inventory out trailing 😅
I drove a 2003 4Runner sport from new and now I drive a 2022 4Runner TRD off road.
Drives awesome as always but do miss the V8 engine, that is the only down fall.
I have the black over lay emblems and black tube step bars.
Sweet. That must bounce off the grey nicely.
Hi ther do the backup camera sensor have beep sound when you backup to let you know that too close?
When equipped they’ll beep faster as you get closer
Just placed the deposit on my 2022 4Runner TRD OR can't wait until it gets here. Got the Lunar Rock.
What a nice ride! Big congrats
@@brianruperti thank you!
Thinking about getting a 2022 4 runner trd off road model.
Very nice choice
I saw the new lime green or what ever it is. It sold for 10k over sticker.
@@Marine2111usmc the prices people are paying is crazy!
proud owner 2021 4runner venture trdoff in white love the beast ...
Nice!
I’m confused and stuck between getting this 2023 or wait for the completely revamped 2024. Any recommendations?
That’s a tough one.
If you appreciate, or even enjoy antiquated items that last forever, the 2023 is the way to go.
If you enjoy new, fresh and exciting tech with updated style and safety, hold for the remodel.
The 2023 is a manual hand crank porcelain grinder for your coffee beans.
The revamp will be a nutribullet.
I have a 2014 and it is a beast I love it
Love the b roll at the end.
I LOVE that the back hatch window Auto up and down. Our '99 is not :-(.
It’s amazing! Think you’ll ever consider upgrading?
Such a great review. Thank you!
Thanks! 🙏🏼
Thanks for sharing the video, I am thinking to get the 4Runner TRD off Road Premium as well…. I was debating to either to get Tacoma or 4 Runner because I think 4 runner is more comfortable doer daily use. Thanks for sharing again and I think I will go for 4 runner.
Thanks for watching! 4Runner is more comfortable you’ll be very happy
@@brianruperti I got my new 4Runner / TRD Off Road Premium / Black. I love it! ❤
Nice find!!! Big congrats man thanks for sharing!
Great review. I have a 2014 whit 110,000 miles y it is perfect. The only thing I would change is the gearbox, changing the A750 for the A760 used in the Lexus 460. I don't know why Yoyota never did this. Thank you
Thanks! I agree!
I just bought a 2024 4 Runner
TRD Off Road Premium 👍
Congrats!
Our lunar rock TRD off road premium is arriving to our dealer in 9 days! So excited! If this design is so successful, why mess it up by changing it? No guarantee the 6th gen and beyond will be as iconic or reliable.
Congrats!
Just traded TRD off-road Taco for a 4Runner limited and I can see what you exactly meant by the beefier power and better transmission than taco I 💯 agree
Congrats on the upgrade!
I wish I could afford two vehicles. I love my '23 Tacoma but man I wish I also had a 4Runner.
I’d love my Tacoma next to a GR Corolla.
fantastic video man. learned a lot!
Thank you!!! Glad I could offer value for you 🙏🏼
One thing that bugs me which doesn't get mentioned in a lot of reviews, is the positioning of the rear wiper. It's off center, and even worse it's positioned for right-hand drive vehicles, not for N American vehicles.
I noticed that too but quickly forget about it because I rarely use a rear wiper anyway. I wonder if there is a market for a conversion piece for those who are more bothered by it 🤔
Thank you for this review. It was very helpful
You’re welcome! Glad I could help!
Very thorough review! Thanks!
Thanks for watching!
Does 2023 4 runner have heated steering wheel or what model does?

Hi can you use H4 on tarmac/asphalt steep twisting road / like in the highest point in georgia, i am asking this because i went there and i just use 2H, i hesitated in using H4 because its tarmac/ asphalt not offroad/dirt and i am afraid i will ruin 4wd system/ trnsmission/ transfer case, thank you, hope you give insight it will be helpful in future adventures, thank you again.
I would not use H4 on dry pavement only H2
Hi Brian, I am from Toronto, Thanks for your videos. Can we get this model with third row seats? I could not find it in website.
Greetings, pleasure to make them. It is an option for the 4runner. I am not fluent in the Canadian market sorry
Amazing review! Thanks
Thanks for watching!
Great video! I'm waiting for my 2024 SR5 Premium to come in.

Thanks for sharing man. I'm currently trying to buy a new 2022 4runner SR5 4X4 or a TRD off road. Pretty hard to find at MSRP.
You’re welcome! Where you from?
@@brianruperti Nashville, TN
@@dcoidua Sending luck from NY! All y’all LOVE 4Runners down there. I saw them everywhere when I went down there
I just noticed that next to that button in the cluster there is a small Crack. My new one has the same thing must be common...
Didn’t even notice it!
Great review, what your opinion on KDSS????
I have a 04. 4 runner no technology but runs really good
Nice truck
Fantastic review. Think I’m going to trade in my F-150 for one. I want that engine before they come out with the new hybrid.
Amen to that
Any suggestions on a locking gas cap?
Tried researching this but so many people had evap issues after getting aftermarket caps /:
Iam currently trying to decide between 2018 Trd off road premium or 2021 sr5
How many miles and what prices
Thanks what I have but didn’t want the sunroof but put more aggressive tires . I like the old school don’t what no hybrid or turbo more issues to go wrong. I wished it still had a key don’t like push button
4runner for life
Awesome review
Thank you 🙏🏼
22 4R TRD OR FTW.
BFG KO2 all year
How can I update to the extra 2 usb in the front??
Buy the kit and install it or just buy a converter
@@brianruperti I found it on Toyotas website. Is it difficult to install? I’m not a smart car guy.
Do you have the brand usb outlet they used. I like that.
Sorry the truck is long gone. Best you could do is pause and zoom in.
Great video, man.
Appreciate it! Thanks for stopping by and checking it out :-)
I have a 22 TRD off-road Tacoma and I’m trading back to the dealer for a 4Runner (pending the numbers work out) I love the taco but I rented a 4Runner recently and yes.. more comfortable and the extra space inside is really nice.
Let us know how you like it when you get one!
@@brianruperti love your videos by the way! Keep ‘em coming!
Thank you!!
Hi Brian, can you please post one video specifically for 2022 4Runner TRD off-road, NOT THE PREMIUM
Yes as soon as I get one!
the toyota dealer you go to, or work at, do they have any 2022s coming in?? and are they charging msrp ? or over msrp?? I want to purchase 1, and a family member wants one.
Please email for inquiries
I just got a silver one same model and year 😮
Congrats!
It's very muscular not wearing a dress like the highlander 😂✌️ love it!
😎
Good choice on the truck and the Seiko
Thanks!
What is the load capacity of the roof with a sunroof?
That would depend on the roof rack system you install. I am told 120lbs by service department but they said that would change based on what equipment and how well it was installed. It’s a grey area.
@@brianruperti ok. we have a Kayak rack that is supported on the cross bars. Kayaks weigh 105# total.
@@danielbarrett6026 I am sure you’re be just fine!
I like the way you video the car :)
Thanks!
4runner is the only one. And yes it has KDSS
