As a veteran I support the Coast Guard 100% but don’t like the idea of them enforcing regulations on non commercial pleasure craft inside of State Waters. The local LEO should enforce their own jurisdiction and the feds stick to enforcing federal commercial shipping, environmental and other congressionally mandated regulations. A federal armed military organization checking life jackets on a 23 ft pleasure craft is ludicrous.
Rick Larson they detained you but size isn’t the issue but rather the fact that the federally undocumented vessel doesn’t require the skipper to have a Masters license and the Vessel doesn’t have a toilet (head) on board should therefore be federally “unregulated” without a warrant. I don’t have a problem with Federal Safety Regulation recommendations to the States but enforcement should be up to the locals. The FBI/ATF etc doesn’t operate without local civil liaison with them due to this issue. They should be assisting the Border Patrol....

The thing with the Coast Guard is that they are a law enforcement agency. They are considered a branch of the military - but they are cops too. They are part of the Department of Homeland Security. Before the existence of DHS, they were Department of Transportation, and prior to that - Treasury. They only fall under DoD when in military service under command of the Navy. Their routine business is law and regulatory enforcement. They're cops. They get a lot of their boarding authority because they are essentially game wardens, customs agents, environmental agents, etc on the navigable waterways of the U.S. They don't have jurisdiction everywhere. There is no sense is trying to fight their boarding powers. It is constitutional. The Constitution itself gives the Supreme Court the sole power of resolving those questions and they have affirmed the Coast Guard's boarding authority as constitutional more than once. It's a legally settled argument. Local police power is not near as "plenary". But even then, officials like game wardens have certain powers that often let them go further without a warrant than regular cops, and access to local waters may be subject to environmental inspections.

No. I haven't taken out a boat on Federal waters the last two years. The hydraulic lift on the trolling motor for this boat leaks fluid and I didn't have enough money to fix it for awhile. I might get it fixed this spring though. Thanks for the reminder.
We’ve been checked multiple times. My son got checked once and the sheriff almost sank his boat by the way came along side. They were a little rough and the boat got swamped.
I showed my wife the video, who is a a a three state license attorney .she says that the law should change that you shouldn’t have to take your life jacket off on the water that it should be stamped outside visible for them to check . We have a four-year-old son who isn’t that great at swimming and on the open water we anyone would tell me to remove his lifejacket I’ll would say “write a ticket that he’s not taking off the lifejacket”. And we would fight it ticket up the court system so that they would Modify law.
I'm guessing this was on the great lakes. The background looked similar to the main gap in Milwaukee. other things than can get checked are nav lights and boat battery needs to be secured and covered.
30 years ago the Coast Guard had the same rights however the policy at least in Duluth Minnesota and Bayfield Wisconsin was not to board and less they observed some erratic behavior or suspicious activity or if you called them for assistance there was no random harassment
Very good video to be on youtube. Everyone should see this before they go out on the water. It'll make you less nervous if you sorta know what to expect.
Nope. They gave me an inspection sheet and said they wouldn't check me again in a year. The last time I was checked was at the dock. Before that, in the early 1990's, my boat broke and they rescued me.
A lot of people that don't know much about the Great Lakes don't realize that the u.s. Coast Guard patrols them not just our ocean coastlines but the Great Lakes as well
A strange thing involving the marine police happened twice to my Brother and I. Both situations were identical. We were 7 miles offshore (due south of Ft. Morgan, Alabama). Tied up to a natural gas rig fishing with seven other boats. I looked north and saw the boat cops about a mile away heading in our direction. We had our pfd's on. We reeled up our lines and started getting all of our documents out. Registration, fishing, boating, and firearm licenses, etc. By the time they got to us we had everything ready. They checked the other seven boats, handed out a few citations, never checked us, and left. The only thing we can figure is that both times they saw us through binoculars preparing for them and probably figured we were in compliance with the law and we were no danger to ourselves or anybody else. The boat nearest us was about 40 feet away and had two loudmouthed Women on board that just couldn't shut up, their husbands were trying to get them to calm down but it didn't work. They must have been given at least five tickets. The boat cops nodded to my Brother and I, we nodded back, and then they left.
Love the coaster! I’ll clown on them until the day I die, because I was in the army and not the toilet bowl navy. But still love them and what they do, good folks all around. Can’t say I agree with deleting comment because you disagree with the language used, but that’s your choice. Glad you were polite and cooperative with these nice folks, hope you had a great day of fishing!
That is because it is controlled under federal waterways... that really isn't inland waters by definition you can access ocean and freighters can get through locks from great lakes to ocean as well..
Same thing happens to me when I was 13. It was in the middle of the channel. I remember thinking that the coast guard boat looked like a floating tank and I nearly had a heart attack when they pulled me over in the middle of a tiny channel. Also, do you always need to have your license on you? I have everything else but it's hard to always have my license on me (for reasons that arnt needed to be explained)
I don't know. I suppose they would miss something once and awhile. While the presence of the Coast Guard is not natural, neither are us in these boats.
The Coast guard is really cool, been stopped by them many times and never had a problem ever. They are usually really nice, unless you have been drinking or you are being rude to them.

Well here to educate, Your requirements depend on size boat and where your location. any specific questions feels free to ask me. I'll happily help you out with needed equipment.
For a police officer to pull you over while driving a car he needs to have, at a minimum, reasonable suspicion. Is that not the case with the USCG and stopping boats? I mean, a cop can't pull you over simply to conduct a "safety inspection". Just curious is all.
Yea they can board you anytime. To me it's a good thing it's not like you can call a wrecker service out there or find a gas station no doubt these people save lives. I love it when they get rid of those fucking drunks

We’ve been checked multiple times. My son got checked once and the sheriff almost sank his boat by the way came along side. They were a little rough and the boat got swamped.
File a complaint with the operator's superior.
Good job Captain.
I think that was pretty cool.
There you go. Thanks for the comment.
So if you're alone fishing and fall overboard who throws you the life ring lol
What is that suppose to mean?
You shall always sit Down when you are fishing from a boat and you shall have your lifejacket on.
Lol.
Funny thing, the same group probably checked this same guy, in the same spot, about a month later.
Nope. They gave me an inspection sheet and said they wouldn't check me again in a year. The last time I was checked was at the dock. Before that, in the early 1990's, my boat broke and they rescued me.
this is the Milwaukee river entrance?
Manitowoc.
I thought that looked familiar. That's auxiliarist Bob. He's a volunteer that just liked getting out with us.
Cool. Now I know what to expect. Thank you. If I get inspected I will ask to see their boat too!!!
Great educational video. Thank you.
A lot of people that don't know much about the Great Lakes don't realize that the u.s. Coast Guard patrols them not just our ocean coastlines but the Great Lakes as well
Yep.
Fantastic video.
Thank you very much!
Good video Thanks for posting.
Thanks for the nice comment. :-)
Thanks for the comment!
What was the piece of paper for they gave you?
The boat passed the inspection. If you present it to another Coast Guard inspection within a year they could let you pass without an inspection.
You don't have to buy flares when those expire. Check 33 CFR or 46 CFR
Huh.
What right does a federal military force have on inland waters?
the distinction is waters that border the states are federal jurisdiction. You are right about lakes that are landlocked by one state.
Paul, the coast guard is allowed to be there, That's their job to be there
That is because it is controlled under federal waterways... that really isn't inland waters by definition you can access ocean and freighters can get through locks from great lakes to ocean as well..
Congrats!
Very nice video, I like your presentation and hope more videos come.
I have a boat, didn't know they do inspections 😁...thanks for sharing in details
Yes they do
The Coast guard is really cool, been stopped by them many times and never had a problem ever. They are usually really nice, unless you have been drinking or you are being rude to them.
Thank you for the comment.
Rick Larson, if you get a coast guard hat they will usually not bother you.
If I can video record the exercise they can stop me every trip!
No VHS radio? No AIS? No Radar reflector?
I don't even want a depth finder. Now I don't even want a boat with a motor actually.
slow day?
Well done.
Well done
You are a good boater
Thank you!
I was 20 miles offshore in the Gulf and was checked- was trolling for Kings. Who'd a thunk it? I always make sure I'm legal.
Legal is safer. Kind of nice they have this reach to help out if needed.
Very nice fellas, Very professional and polite, did their job well. We don't have that in the UK, But it'd be good for the professional and passionate chat sometime with them ! haha
I thought they were professional as well. Thanks for the comment.
@Rick Larson No problemo
Congrats!!
Thanks. :-)
I thought it was funny when he asked for a drivers license, like when did they start adding an endorsement for fishing? I guess they really are "The DOT of the deep Blue Sea"
In the state of michigan you actually have to have a valid drivers license to drive a boat. And yes you can get a dui for operating a boat drunk in the state of michigan
good video.. thanks!
Great video. Thanks for posting!
Maritime Jurisdiction, Admiralty Law.
Yea they can board you anytime. To me it's a good thing it's not like you can call a wrecker service out there or find a gas station no doubt these people save lives. I love it when they get rid of those fucking drunks
Recovering_Californian yes me too, i hate being pulled over with no apparent reason. Ruins my day
Title 14 USC 89 gives the USCG full authority to conduct safety inspections of US flagged vessels without restrictions.
@101327 Ok.
