The Shameful Case of the Deathbed Grifters
Вставка
- Опубліковано 4 вер 2024
- This time I'm talking about an Arizona couple arrested for perpetrating a $900 million fraud scheme by applying unnecessary skin grafts to elderly and dying people in nursing homes and hospice care, then charging Medicare for the grafts while receiving hundreds of millions in illegal kickbacks from the manufacturer. This is the story of Alexandra Gehrke and Jeffrey King: Deathbed Grifters.

Who on earth would name their medical company Cull? It makes it sound like a eugenics euthanasia clinic.
I was genuinely shocked he didn't make a joke about that
Exactly.. It's comedically awful; it's the language we use for livestock!
I was just going to say this!
They wanted to name it after founder Adolf Pedophilia Cull and went with the least of all evils.
Cull [the weak] LLC, Viking [raid and pillage] LLC, Apex [predator] LLC. The grift is in the open
In Austria, we have a figure of speech: "The last shirt has no pockets", meaning you can't take any of your wealth with you into the afterlife.
We say "there's nae pockets in a shroud" in Scotland too.
Auf Deutsch, bitte!
@MechMK1
We say something similar here too. "You come into the world naked and you leave the world naked". Meaning that you are born carrying nothing into the world and you leave the same way.
You come into this world naked and leave this world naked.
Dude.
A child of a lawyer and an artist who never had to work a real job for a reason moved to LA and ended up being a terrible person obsessed with ascetics and money?
A story as old as time
Hate to be that guy but its *aesthetics.
Edit: I wish she was obsessed with being an ascetic instead.
I have seen rich people haggling, stalling or just straight up lying over for them relatively tiny money with employees or even contractors as if for them, it wasn't about money but about proving the skill.
Rich parents ruin their own children like this quite often while thinking they're giving them a good life.
I am almost positive that the cat-bite lawsuit was an insurance fraud scheme in which she made a claim to her homeowners insurance of a lawsuit, the insurance company pays to settle it, and they wind up with a could grand for nothing.
That's what I planned to comment. So, these two were swindling together from the get go.
Strange that they would go for such a small amount when they had a billion dollars.
@@TheLongRanger The time line was, from my understanding, that the cat law suit was before the big medical scam.
So, perhaps it was their first taste of fraud. Just had to go for the big one, I guess.
Obviously hope they get the punishment they deserve.
@@kassemir If I had to guess, there were many mini grifts going on - like this cat lawsuit -- that they just kept getting away with so they thought, "why not?". The two art galleries seems odd as well. Her art is extremely amateur and I don't know what or why she'd have an art gallery for, let alone two. I bet if they kept looking for books in one of their 20 homes they'd find a book on how to grift or something so obvious. Too bad they never picked up the book, "Accounting for Organized Crime"
Yeah when George (I'm paraphrasing) said "and then she started to fraud" I was thinking "you mean _after_ the cat bite fraud?"
I was going to leave a long insightful comment but I have dimished life expectancy due to a cat scratch.
Same. I also lost all enjoyment in life because of it.
Can always count on Georg to help me lose faith in humanity one video at a time. Great and important work regardless
I was so young and carefree when I started listening 7 years ago, but his constant negativity has aged me by at least 7 years.
Every view sloughs away a little more of my soul, yet I return to our Lovecraftian overlord.
It's especially important on Fridays before I laugh and act like a fool.
Relying on faith is a fool's errand.
It is hard to endure, that UA-camrs, making videos about stuff like this, do have to employ lawyers, because the compamy will immediately sue them. Happens in Germany too when UA-camrs f.ex. make a video about a pyramid scheme.

I'm a medical fraud auditor and compliance officer and it is sickening how prevalent this is. Even with the anti-kickback laws and the false claims act, greed is the driving factor of medical practices in my experience. The United States has been attempting to move towards a patient-driven payment model and it is currently in effect with nursing homes but it really does need to go further and protect our most vulnerable populations from greedy people. Unfortunately there are lobbyists in our government preventing patient-driven payment model structures. Also a big shout out to all of the receptionist s and nursing aide that answer the phone and know right away they are talking to a fraudulent company attempting to force medical equipment on patients that don't need it. it is an everyday affair
Universal healthcare will save the American taxpayer 450 billion dollars per year according to all conservative and liberal studies. But you people love capitalism
I live in the UK, and this mercenary attitude from doctors does not exist to the same extent. I think the very high wages for doctors in USA may occasionally attract people who are intrested in money rather than people
@@seymourclearly What about the going private thing?
@@seymourclearly Well, this story is mainly about nurses on the front end, so I don’t see doctor’s pay playing much of a role in this case.
More generally, I think the far bigger problem is an interlinked, for-profit system, in which all institutional actors are trying to boost profits and margins, while patient care is at most a(n incidental) byproduct.

Why the hell would you name a medical device distribution company... Cull Medical Solutions?
Satire is becoming unnecessary.
Anyone who would spend $6,000 on a throw pillow, shouldn’t be allowed unfettered access to money.
It’s their money though ?
I know people who order basic rocks through the mail , but which are marketed as “Healing Crystals” ?
Many people are suckers … that’s never gonna change 🤷♂️
Was the throw pillow actually a pillow? I swear I heard something about people listing things like pillows with female names on Wayfair for lots of money. Someone suggested it was a way people to launder money for encounters with females.
But that's all just a rabbit hole...
Throw pillows normally cost $6000. Totally. 😆
It always amazes me that people who actually need Medicare coverage for something, sometimes have to fight tooth and nail to get assistance for it, if they are even able to get it at all. Meanwhile, these scam companies and governors (FL for example), manage to squeeze millions out of the government with little to no resistance. Just like the PPP loans. Companies that actually needed that money had a ludicrously difficult time applying for the loan and were often rejected. Meanwhile, billion dollar corporations and national brands got hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars to help them save their business operations and pay employees, which they promptly stuck in their pockets, distributed to shareholders, and then fired all the employees anyway.
its almost like the entirety of eurocentric "healthcare" has always been and will always be a scam. ffs, the moment a healthcare "professional" charges people for their care, or refuses to care for someone because they cant pay the gouged prices, they break their hippocratic oath. actually, even before they do that, if they dont loudly demand the minimum wage be enough to cover basic necessities, they are breaking that oath. because if you cant advocate for the basic requirements of good health to be obtainable for everyone, you cant claim to have not done harm to them first.
Rick Scott is a boil on the butt of humanity. And people are stupid enough to keep supporting him.

@@retrocatalog like anything it can be done well or it can be done poorly. But the people who always use gentrification as a derogative seem to have an unqualified problem with the idea of coming into a place and building new buildings or renovating old ones, increasing the quality of the living and commercial spaces, with the inevitable result that rent and ownership costs are going to increase and people with more wealth are going to be spending more money there, obviously making it difficult for people who can't afford it.

I think the reason for the lawsuit might be for insurance claims. If the judge declares someone at fault and they have insurance covering what their cat does then there's a payout.

Dude, there is a man who is an ex governor of Florida (2011-2019). Prior to this, he co-founded the US's largest for-profit healthcare company. This company committed one of the largest cases of healthcare fraud in our nation's history against Medicare, Medicaid and Tricare (military insurance), all government funded insurance providers. The company was found guilty on 14 felony counts and fined $1.7 billion dollars. This man is Rick Scott. Know what happened to him? He got $10 million in severance pay, $300 million in stocks and options and is a CURRENT US junior Senator. He is everything that is wrong with the healthcare system, the justice system and politics and there's a certain group who just loves him and has supported him and continues to do so.
