    Dont sweat it Remy. I’m in the same boat, a few weeks ago I bought a “melanarus” wrasse from LA and they ended up sending me a cosmetus wrasse instead by accident. Anyway, that was the first fish I have qt’d. I just bought a 20 gallon brute bin off amazon and used prazi. I also was dosing substate sauce to help with bacteria. He is healthy and happy now. I would recommend getting a clear container like Jason said, I could only see my wrasse from above the whole qt process 😅

    Another strong anecdote from a very experienced reefer that alk swings are not the problem people think they are. Alk swings are the whipping boy for every imaginable coral problem, and I don't think it is to blame most of the time ( or maybe ever if you are in the 7-12dkh range).

    • @UnorthodoxReef
      @UnorthodoxReef 6 місяців тому +1

      I think the cause of the swing is what makes a lot of difference also. Like the swing is the byproduct of a few other reactions. Or is it that over stability makes sissy corals :).

    Great show guys. I'm thinking a calcium reactor is my next step. I dose kalk now but my reasoning is this: one redundancy but more so because of iodine. Not putting it in but getting it out. Oxidized iodine builds up from nori feeding and only breaks down to iodine gas in low pH. Constant high pH everywhere in my tank has lead to literally 100x iodine levels. Oxidized iodine isn't very bioactive but 100x (more) can't be good.

      I’m a huge fan of calcium reactors and an even bigger fan of running one while also dosing kalk

    Personally, I say more captive breeding. It's hard to make the argument for spawning say Acro's, due to the ease of fragmentation. However, that argument becomes much easier for those that don't frag easy, such as Scoly's or Acantho's for example.
    But when it comes to fish, captive spawn, captive spawn, captive spawn... Once you have those breeding pairs and the set up, once they have been quarantined and cleared of infection, it really is the best place we can get our fish from. Are their drawbacks? Sure. They're often juveniles, so you have to be ok with a small fish. And there is a mark up for the care and months of effort, ensuring the operation is profitable. But, tank breed are so much more hardy. They have to be shipped a fraction of the distance. They're already accustomed to aquarium foods. And if done correctly, there should be minimal risk of fish disease and parasites. Also getting a juvenile means I can keep a pet for it's full lifetime.
    As an example: I see no reason to purchase a Hawaiian Tang. The one in my tank from Biota is vibrant yellow, once grown, and has all the same genetics and behavior as a wild tang. At this point, it's a near flawless specimen of it's species. Why the hell would I rip one out of the ocean and confine it to an aquarium, after it's known true freedom? Why would I risk that extra level of disease from the importation and transshipment process? Then have to perform home prophylactic treatments with coppers and harsh Antihelminthic or Antiprotozoals? Why would I do that, when a viable alternative exists?
    The blatant failure of the hobby to realize the potential of captive spawned fish is a detriment. And freshwater has us put to shame.
    I personally wish there were far more captive spawned species. And I'll buy captive over wild any chance I can get.

    Hmmm travertine tile in an aquarium- I’ve never thought of that 😂

    • @UnorthodoxReef
      @UnorthodoxReef 5 місяців тому +1

      Hahah yeah, I started using the 3x6 travertine tiles “calcite” (basically calcium carbonate) for my frag system. I cut them in half with a tile saw and they make the perfect grow out tile. Heavier than the discs and glue holds better. One day I needed to seed a qt tank and just grabbed some out of my frag system and it worked great.

      @@UnorthodoxReef I had a 6 gallon nano reef tank back in 2008 and the main reason I was successful was because I had an amazing mentor that was also my coworker and he didn’t even acclimate fish. He dumped them right in his tank. He stocked my tank with corals and I was growing pocillopora and stylaphora.

      @@rowgegaming5048 I actually feel I have had better success sometimes just getting the fish out of the bag and into the qt/observe tank as fast as possible. Some wrasses and other fish really stress out in a bucket.
