Mangrove lagoons are super cool and are such an essential part of the reef ecosystem. I have two mangroves in my house, one in my 10g clam lagoon and another in my son’s FW planted tank. Cheers!

2 mins in and Salem has me cracking up already.
I think the uptake of CO2 in mangroves would mostly happen in the foliage above the water. Not sure if CO2 gets absorbed by the roots? Very cool thought experiment though. I've been training bonsai trees for about 15 years so I am intrigued.

I just received my ICP test kits for the what’s in your water giveaway. Pretty cool! I didn’t realize initially it was for two kits-freshwater and saltwater. Many thanks to reef therapy and ICP analysis. Don’t forget to enter guys and gals!

    Tyler,
In Sydney there is a Hibiscus tree that grows were mangroves should grow. It is called Hibiscus tiliaceus. Check it out. It is related to Mallows and has big yellow flowers.
    Cheers,
    Chris

I planted my mangroves in a mixture of aragonite sand and AquaForest Life Source mud, lighted with a grow light they grow faster than in any previous setup.

Great topic! Been planning to start my 3rd tank before the end of summer - macroalgae, softies, sponges, fanworms, deeper sand, garden eels, Mangroves and some other curious critters. 😊

I have family with property on a small island in the Bahamas, mangroves are ubiquitous there, although I never paid attention to the different types. Going back again this summer I’ll have to pay more attention.

Will Remy be sending in a follow up microbiome test with aquabiomics to see the results of adding the uv to the system? #whatsinyourwater

I normally don't get too excited when watching videos anymore, but I just couldn't let this one go...
16:21 There is absolutely no relationship between the UVC from an UV reactor sterilizer and the UVA / UVB emitted by metal halides. In addition to that, there is no relationship between the absolute control of any pathogens, or any organism at all in the water column, and metal halides. There is the possibility of some control over surfaces exposed to the UVA and UVB from halides to some extent, but we all know that the fantasy of having halides and no pathogens is just not true. Other wise we wouldn't have RTN and STN in the 90s, using 400W halide lamps over 55 gallon systems. Ha! I told that to Mike when he was thinking about all that!
There are unique benefits using halides. They will supply the right energy to produce natural pigments that no other artificial illumination can, they will help the immune system of the coral with the right wavelengths IMO, they will stimulate the whole system to behave like a shallow reef environment and help the production of micro life, like no other light can. The best advantages using halides and T5s is the amazing spectrum and coverage combination. Whoever says the opposite, or that LEDs also can, is driving in a money wagon or trying to make someone else happy. Or maybe is just exercising that confirmation bias after spending some ca$h on LEDs.
The best control of pathogens is not to introduce them in the fist place. Quarantine is what will help to prevent some of the organisms to be introduced in the system. The common sense combination of a good consistent maintenance, stability of the whole system, balance of total input/export of nutrients, constant observation, and proper controlled feeding practices is what drives a healthy reef tank.
I'm going to make this one a very important one here: THE LESS CHEMICALS you put in you system the BETTER! Consistency of water changes in the right proportions, according to the need of the system, is your best friend. As if people would listen to me! LOL!
This is not to justify the amazing benefits of using metal halides, but an interesting paper on a partial benefit:
Ultraviolet (UV) radiation prevents bacterial bleaching of the Mediterranean coral Oculina patagonica.
    Maine Ecology Progress Series
    January 2002.
    Aloha!

25:42 I can't wrap my head around all this marketing strategy of blue type of light. Can't people understand that is all about MAKING the corals to look more EXPENSIVE? It's all about the prices under those blue LEDs. Open your eyes!!!!!! That needs to change! It's not a matter of personal preferences, it's what the marketing want$ you to believe in order to change the real value of that coral! To offer REAL full spectrum (not what people call "full spectrum" from LEDs) is a matter of coral health IMO. A "blue" metal halide will still have the representation of the whole full spectrum, with "less white". The "blues" LED deal isn't the same at all, but very poor in that manner. Which technology do you think that will represent the actual light in the ocean at 30+ feed deep, if blue is what you like aesthetically?
There is more I wanted to comment, but I already wrote another comment on the UVC, so... but people will see mostly my comments on lighting because is indeed one of the most important urgent subjects to be changed IMO. Lighting is translated to "nutrition" for corals! Light plays with the whole coral metabolism. Reef Keepers need to wake up to that and stop limiting MH/T5 use by excuses like "too hot", "electricity costs", etc... You will have to use more LEDs and consequently more electricity over any tank, than when you use a simple halide fixture to try to achieve similar results, but still won't be the same. Just ask Sanjay! Anyways... There is a new company that is making metal halide lamps that just launched couple months ago: Aqua Bright Solutions. Their lamps are made by the same people that manufactured Hamilton lamps. They said the demand for halides is growing each day and there is a possibility for them to start producing some new fixtures and ballasts.
