To be honest I don't think any average joe could interview them at that stage of life. Reminds me of seeing people try to interview John Lydon back in when he was young. No question is ever right
MasKistershi They were ridiculous questions to be asking any musician. It seemed as though the interviewer was fulfilling a requirement for a philosophy course, a course in which he was ill-equipped to participate.
But at the same time if they just ask the standard questions interviewers get shit for that. They were just trying it do something different and get to understand them on a deeper level. Silly perhaps but at the end of the day I knew many people of that age bracket, at that time and of that genre; and many were just like this, in that if you caught them on the wrong day and you were not from the same genre as they are, then you would be hard pressed to get anything positive out of them. I have a feeling they would agree themselves these days. We have all grown up since then.
Nick: "I don't know...I really think this conversation is becoming circular." Interviewer: "Ok..uhm..kind of life's circular, dont you think, like birth and death" That's one of my favs, always makes me laugh really loud, and then the one that follows: "uh..what's your conception of life, anyway" - and I'm done. Love it.
Seriously though "what is your conception of life?" I mean, really? What conception of life can you possibly have when you are in your mid-20's? Seems as if the interviewer tried to ask deep questions to come across intelligent, and they are just bored and amused.
Horribly unreachable. That kind of an addiction is a nightmare. I don't know much about Blixa (if you see he and Nick together in the Weeping Song video, it's clear he's an extraordinary talent) but I've read enough about Nick to understand that he's one of the rare ones to live and reach even loftier heights (especially with screenwriting). They say heroin makes the addict feel like Jesus' son. it's damn near impossible to turn your back on such a lie.
5:34 - I can't tell, but it looks like Nick notices Blixa's "fixed" hair at that point and cracks up. Hence "Do you want to try it?" and gesturing the comb toward him. Every time I see this I notice something new. Bad interviews can produce very funny outcomes...
That interviewer sucks. He has his own biases, both personal and political, that colour everything he's asking these artists. Good show on Blixa & Nick's part in just laughing at that tool.
I would consider renaming this one- "The dumbest questions ever asked in interviewing a musician or music group". Seriously. Had I been in Nick's place I'd have been insulted.
" So Bilxa why did you leave Australia ? " No wonder he wrote a song about journalists called "Scum". " Uh Nick what's the meaning of existence ? " DUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUR
"Ah, hey Nick. What's the secret of life man. Seriously. Right here in this interview could you sum it up for me in one breath? And Blixa. Could you tell me what the shape your turd was in when you dropped a douce this morning? Like seriously, explain in detail please. Was it long like an anaconda or more rabbit style?" Wow wow wowsers...
@surfistador I lived in SF from 85 - 90 and worked at Rough Trade (we distributed Halber Mensch stateside, and used to refer to Blixa as "the leather toothpick"). Hung out with a German woman who'd been hanging out with EN in Berlin. She said they were doing heroin, but that's just hearsay. Really doesn't matter to me one way or the other. Also, Nick and Blixa did an in-store performance at Reckless Records on Haight in Oct. 1986, and I was there. Perhaps there was another one two years before.
He should have sent his questions per mail. What a fake intellectual bullshit heap of not to the point questions. It's great to have questions that dig deeper, but you need to have a sense of timing to come up with them. You don't ask for the sense of life to your coincidential neighbour in the subway either.
Give the guys some slack !!!! they were young and that interviewer is a pain...... can't he see that was not the right time to hustle them and what he asked was shallow and boring!!!! great musicians ,that guy was lucky to have their time of the day in that state !!! lol . he should have drunk a few drinks before ..... just to be at the same head state as the band ....
This is classic! Typical know-nothing journalist fishing for answers to fit his own concept of what Nick & the Seeds represent in his narrowcast worldview. This vid should be Standard Viewing 101 for every musician & performer. RESPECT to messrs Cave & Bargeld!
This is a textbook example of how not to interview someone, or indeed carry a conversation with anyone. Asking what you think is a question via giving two somewhat oppopsing opinions that are really only your take on the world or a subject is textbook douchebaggery. Look out for this witless technique at any bar in the world.
oh dear those were his heroin days. still had pretty good communication skills other interviews with people on heroin have been excruciating. check out the sid and nancy interview for a start 😨
I think heroin doesn't 'interfere' with/ impair person's communication skills somehow outrageous distinct like eg. excessive drinking does, sofar as taken by an 'experienced' user having a certain degree of tolerance developed. I guess Nick must have been strung out on herion pretty much these days, wasn't he? Oh, and I also think Sid (and Nancy but mostly Sid) are an exception rather than a rule. Oddly enough, heroin influence is visible more distinct in separate frames than in the whole movie. Once I took few screenshots of Nick's interview and was pretty surprised to be able to unintentionally 'catch' him (Redhanded) being unquestionable high while I have it completely omitted as watching the whole thing.
Pretty sure this a friend mines dad Tim interviewing them. She's got a photo from before the show of nick holding her as an infant . Tim is also in a news cast from the era for booking the cocteau twins.
I once had the chance to interview Jaz Coleman of Killing Joke (Big fame check!!!) and the guy wouldn't shut up, he just kept talking into the recorder. it was awesome. I didn't have to say a damn thing. But, I think I would of strangled this guy in frustration. ( Love the Birthday Party.. all the same).
They both are seriously intoxicated, clearly unable to think straight, and thus frustrated by the interviewer's questions (not that the questions are great). The mental dullness is palpable here.
This interview is funny, but I'm pretty sure the interviewer was holding himself from either storming out of there or beating the crap out of two drunk punks.
I just can't wait until some clown on stage, or at least at some stage, explains to me life's mistayries. }This has got to be the funniest interview I have seen with Mr.Cave in it, and it's not even in California !{
@Shali2707 For the record, Blixa swears he's never done heroin (see documentary "Mein Leben") and actually looks pretty sharp. Nick, on the other hand, looks a little slooower. BTW, I saw Nick play an acoustic in-store set for this tour in San Francisco. What was amazing was how young he seemed at the time and the record store at Haight and Masonic was absolutely packed.
Blixa was wasting away due to *something* for a good deal of the 80s, especially evident in the very late 80s-- looks like he has meth face almost. If not heroin, than CNS stimulants, such as cocaine or meth.
I think that Nick and Blixa today, when thea look this thinking: "Oh shit...what was that..." Look how fucked up we were, embarising...Thats what I think when I see myself 30 years ago...and thanx God that Im still alive...and different
Wow... the we're too school approach fuelled by heroin. Nick Cave - love him or hate him he was a huge influence in the Indie/"Alternative scene from 1979 to 1997 when it ended. The Birthday Party - St Nick fielded questions about them for a decade. He got smart and by 1994 he would head off the B'day Party questions by saying anyone who worships the his former band should get a life. Jesus and Mary Chain - use St Nick's approach in a 1985 interview. JIM Reid tells the arrogant interviewer to stop as he has asked the same question 4 times in a row and just re-words the same question. William Reid then walks in and he is asked the same question. His brother tells him not to answer that question. William Reid then says "my favourite colour is Gold." Prineless.
I guess it’s not surprising that these alternative acts don’t generally get the highest caliber of interviewers. Holy shit is this tough to watch. He follows up asking him about what moral code the general public should follow, a question Nick didn’t want to answer, with “What’s your conception of life?” This is almost as bad as the “Can you be a tongue for Europe?” interview. The only thing saving it from being worse is the fact that this guy clearly speaks better English.
In the background around 5:00: "I need an XLR to quarter-inch!" "Male or female?" "Female! I need a female XLR to quarter-inch!" "Female?" "Yeah! Female! I need a female XLR to quarter-inch!" "What?" "Female! Yes, female! I need a female XLR to quarter-inch!" So funny!
WTF are you joking? What about Chris Bailey and the others from the saints? What about the guys from radio birdman, or the go betweens or ac/dc or the easy beats or a heap of others? you clearly don't know music, especially Aussie music. Fuck the saints were awesome before cave even did that cringe worthy shivers music clip lol. I'd love to see caves reaction if you said that comment of yours to him, he'd cringe more than we did at his shivers performance lol
Doesn't mean i didn't enjoy their band and music. I'm from Australia and saw this band numerous times when they were getting their feet. I'm a long time fan of theirs, but a wanker is a wanker, there's no point lying about the truth
@PotatoManTada Search GoogleVideo. There's a pretty recent interview of him on there. He was doing a sort of experiment theatrical show, with just himself a microphone and some FX.
@ilikelittlepuppies seriously. he is everything i try to model myself after..... well, the 'Cave'man too. But how young and coked up are they in this? This is kind of a shit interview, but great footage besides
LOL Blixa casually backcombing his hair,,,

Musicians hate having to explain their music so I get why the interviewer was trying to approach it differently.
Seems that they were too high to think straight, and were frustrated and annoyed at the questions mainly because of that.
@@heidih3048 For sure!
"I think you should ask about music, really."
What we need to continue doing 60 years into this is to ask pop musicians the deepest philosophical questions.

Unreachable spheres these two, Nick's wisdom can resonate better now hes clean which not all geniuses have had the chance to achieve, tragically
+Silky wordin Why do you think he's 'clean' and what do you mean exactly? Just curious...
clear headed as not addicted to heroin anymore.
Silky wordin hmmm. Depends what you mean by addicted I guess. I'd say he has his opiate dependency under control, which is basically the same thing.

*psycho fangirl mode on* GOOOOD, YOUNG BLIXA IS SO FUCKABLE! *mode off* great musicans, indeed.
