- There aren't many differences in British and American grammar but there are some notable differences in the way we use the present perfect tense.
This video is a collaboration with Jennifer ESL of English with Jennifer and together we explore how we use the words just, yet and already on each side of the Atlantic.
You'll learn how we use the present perfect to talk about recent actions and give news and you'll also learn about some interesting differences in when we use the present perfect and simple past past tense.

Thanks. These differences also happen in Spanish. Spaniards use more present perfect than Latin Americans, I'm Latin American and I'd also say those sentences more often with simple past than with present perfect. Thank God I'm studying American English. This makes everything easier for me :)

Yes, I've noticed the same in Spanish too. Could it be the greater weight of history in Spain and Britain that's reflected in the use of language?
Yeah dude i'm Spanish and we use present perfect a lot more than you do!
That is a good remark MEP. Sometimes I think that Spaniards use more often the present perfect because they really dont know the past form of some verbs. I was surprised to find the same thing in the german language. In my opinion, Germans overuse the present perfect form when telling a story.

Hello, I’ve seen a couple of your videos on using the present perfect in British and American English, and some of the differences in how it is used. But I’ve never seen you mention that with the verb ‘to get’ British and American English have different present perfect forms. So in British English the present perfect form is the same as the simple past form, got. So in the simple past Brits say and write ‘I’ve got a new set of pencils. Simple past is ‘I got a new set of pencils.’
But in American English an older simple past form has been retained, gotten. So Americans say and write ‘I’ve gotten a new set of pencils’ in the present perfect, but say and write as the British do ‘I got a new set of pencils’ in the simple past.
Maybe you cover that in a video on British verbs

I got a question please which is related to grammar in this video but it's not actually about present perfect.
In the minute 4:45 of this video, I heard you Vicki saying ( In the British English these sentences would be unusual) my question is what was the reason of using "would" rather than "will" in that sentence I mentioned above. I know it was related to something that was imagined but I couldn't figure out the best explanation.

Oh it's so strange Haider. Mt repoly diasappeared. Let me respond again. British people don't generally use the simple past with yet and already. It's possible, but very unlikely. So with 'would' I was indicating that I see it as something that's hypothetical and unlikely to happen. 'Would' creates a distance between what's real and what's hypothetical, and I'm talking about the hypothetical. Another example - do you remember the 2nd conditional: if + past tense, would/could, + base verb. We use that to talk about unlikely or unreal situations too. My sentences was like one half of a 2nd conditional.

Would which has a lot of uses and conditionals especially the second one have been the most obstacle that I've been experiencing since I started learning English intensively and I've heard many English teachers saying that mastering conditionals with their derivatives like implied ones are equal to 20-25% of learning English grammar.
That's why I think it would be a good idea if you made videos about conditional sentences .
I know there are a lot of videos on youtube and the internet about that topic but I prefer your method because you use a simple way of teaching which involves clips from everyday life , which are make the lesson easy to understand and sink in.

It's important to know these differences !
I often use the present perfect with "just" or "already" and an American frien of mine is always correcting me and he writes me that I must use the past simple.
But even though everyone uses the past simple to speak about a very recent action, isn't it a grammar mistake ?

It sounds like your American friend is following American usage rules and you are following British useage rules, Mona. Neither British or American usage is better than the other. They are just different. Hope this helps.

My small, old French brain is used to use the "passé composé " to talk about a recent action! (It’s seems not far from the present perfect).
When I was learning Spanish, it was "preterit" that was normally used...
It's always a different brain exercice!
But I like following the rules and I read in grammar articles that to talk about a recent action the persent perfect has to be used. I am perhaps too inflexible !

Hello Vicky and Jay, I'm wondering if it's ok to say "I didn't have so much fun for a long time". I've been told this is incorrect in British English. How about in American English?
Anaïs, this is Jay writing back. In either British or American English I would say "I haven't had this much fun in a long time." Another way I might say it is "It's been a long time since I've had this much fun." I hope that helps.

final consonants witIf there's either a "d" or a "t" or any other consonant, do American native speakers tend to pronounce the final consonants with the stop sounds? Such as:

Great vid:) but there's something that makes me wonder.... in some videos of Rachels English Jennifer is a British speaker(didn't sound British tho) while Rachel is American... I did some research and it turned out that Jennifer is neither British nor American.... I'm all confused right now...
Hi Miroslaw. This is Vicki writing and I am British. I grew up and spent most of my life in the UK, though I live in Philadelphia in the US now. You're right that Rachel is American. She lives in Philadelphia, like me and we're good friends. We're also friends with Jennifer who lives in Boston. She's American too. I'm the only British speaker of the three. Does that help?

What does the sentence "Your mother's just called" mean? Does it mean "your mother has just called"?

Yep.
Yes, it means "has just called." The 's can either be a shortcut for 'is' or 'has'. So, "Dinner's ready. Come get it." means "Dinner is ready." But "Your mother's just called" means your mother has just called. You can only tell from the context of the sentence.
It is a hard one!
Well luckily Karen Karen, you can use the present perfect or past in a lot of these examples and you'll be fine in one English variety or another. :-)

Hi Shaimaa. Great questions. In a lot of situations we could say 'I've forgotten' or 'I forgot'. In the US, more people would say 'I forgot'.

Shouldn't she say 'Oh! I've forgotten' instead of 'Oh! I forgot'? Considering that there's no cleat time frame in the dialogue and the result is what matters to us in the moment.
The informal and more urgent nature of "Oh, I forgot" is what's important here. "I've forgotten" is certain correct, but as Jennifer pointed out, sounds more formal and has far less urgency then I forgot - a point made when the lights went out :-) Thank you so much for contributing to the conversation, Invgvrbo.

Vicki wanted to show the difference in meaning between: "I found..." and "I have found...". Sometimes both forms are possible, but often it depends on the context.
Why is it "you didn't pay the electric bill", and not "you haven't paid the electric bill" since it has relevance to the present?
Hi Anaïs. Vicki may have more to say about this, but in my mind "You didn't pay the electric bill" is a statement that makes an accusation. Whereas "You haven't paid the electric bill" is simply a statement of fact.

We don’t use present perfect in America half as much they say we do in this video.
It's often hard to rely on your gut feelings about language Whitfield, but luckily there is corpus based research we can use to guide us these days.

Other than having lots of Indian friends, and one Indian brother-in-law, we have no direct Indian connection. Jay is from Brooklyn, New York, and Vicki is from around London originally.
