Really top shelf work on redoing Perl, can’t wait to see her run ! Bet it’s going to be sweet and worth the effort you put in it Thanks for sharing and keep up the quality craftsmanship! And thank God for the election 🇺🇸
That is an absolutely stunning rebuild of this machine. I hope you enjoy it for many years but I also hope that after you it goes to someone who appreciates it and will take the same pride in owning and working it as you. Respect Sir.
Yep, you got a sweet deal being able to get a FAFNIR brand bearing. The shaft and gear assembly that bearing fits looks very much like the gear setup in a Dog Box transmissions I used to build for racing cars. All the best.😉
If you have problems with the drain valve handle, you can always drill the handle and wire it closed or use a spring to pull it closed. But that plug will certainly stop oil from escaping too, so your risk is extremely small.
I’ve been wondering if you would start offering to make custom seals, especially after all the testing that you’ve done. Thanks for covering that in this video, I hope your seals work out where you could start making something like this. It’s always good to have availability on items like this, something to file away in case the need pops up, always looking for sources of hard to find items.
I haven't seen taper pins with draw bolts before. Pretty neat. Great job on that old girl! I'm thinking that project has made you do a LOT of thinking. You're definitely up for it!
Does anyone recall what the seals are made with? I know they are 3-D printed, and I think that material would work fine for a new scroll saw bellows that I cannot find anywhere in the size I need. Thanks.
Anyone have a way to remove tapered pins? How do you tell what end is the small end when the pin is flush with the part? Are tapered pins hardened, can they be drilled?
Most taper pins are 12L14 material and can be drilled, file or clean the surface around both ends of pin, then measure to tell which end is the smaller of the two.
June '60-April '62 I drilled/reamed tapered pins, cut or broached keyways, drilled / tapped set screws and wound/headed music wire springs for cigar packing machines. Fond memories !
First class work Keith, congratulations too on the election result, wish we had a leader like yours instead of the self serving pecker head we got now.
You commented a couple times about the set screws having a dog point on them, did you have any thoughts about using a brass insert and locking it in with the set screw? Or wouldn’t it make any difference. Just curious about your thoughts on it.
I wonder what the guys that designed and built Pearl in the first place would think about what you have done to restore and improve her? Like how my Grandfather who built instrument panels for B-29s during WWII would react to seeing what goes into a B-52 or a B2 Bomber, or an F-35 fighter, or a Harrier, or an Osprey, or an A-10 Warthog...
The fact we can make our own seals now a days is great! Inspires confidence in getting back into these older machines. Lathe looks really nice Keith.
Excellent progress on that old girl. Looking forward to the next adventure. Thanks for sharing your project.

Very meticulous Kieth - that lathe should be better than new when your finished.
Very enjoyable to watch.

Those slip-joint parallel-grip nonmarring pliers sure did the trick on the woodruff key.

Nice video Keith! I hope a lot more of your viewers start watching your content on RUMBLE instead of this WOKE platform!

25:53 - Early (265 only?) mouse motors had fabric/rope rear main seals.
45:40, my God the imagination of the person(s) that came up with that design of levers?!

you can still buy them
A wonderful hour on a very windy and wet Sunday afternoon here in the UK. Thanks Keith.

Great job Kieth! Pearl is coming together nicely.
First class work Keith, congratulations too on the election result, wish we had a leader like yours instead of the self serving pecker head we got now.
You are not kidding
Boy that last part could apply to so many countries.
World. world class, first class.
Incredible.
What shape are the ways in? I'd LOVE to own this lathe!
I just had the entire lathe reground.
@KeithFenner Did you have to send it out of town? What about the carriage? Thanks.
You commented a couple times about the set screws having a dog point on them, did you have any thoughts about using a brass insert and locking it in with the set screw? Or wouldn’t it make any difference. Just curious about your thoughts on it.
I like the brass or lead method for threaded applications.
Thanks for the reply, I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving and hopefully we’ll see you before the rest of the holidays.
The devil is in the details. Great job Keith. Thanks for sharing.
A lot of devils in there today, Nice job!
You have the touch and feel. Very hard to teach that.
Better than factory!
Olá amigo Keith!!!
Sempre muito bem explicado seus trabalhos, estou facinado com esta montagem!!!
Abraço e boa sorte sempre!!!

Anything with more than one handle or knob, will get me confused.
Glad you had a great birthday, with the added pleasure of a beautiful landslide election as a backdrop! 🙂

Keith, very nice....you're attention to detail is amazing. Wasn't one of those handles cracked or broken if I recall?
That was the handles out on the feed and control rods running through the carriage.
Was totally ready to recite the pledge with the children!!!! Please include it from now on.
Keith, do you have a link to the filament you used to print those seals?
It's a resin base, silicone 40A V1 from Form Labs, I used my Form 3+ to print these rather than my Ultimaker with filament TPU
TRUMP 2024 BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
👍🏻
MAGA.
Impecável até nos mínimos detalhes. O diabo aparece aonde houve falta de capricho
You look like Stalone
There's no such thing as "fitted. I beg to differ.
