Coming from a neglected old lathe, given a lot of tender loving care by the right man, Pearl is about ready to make a grand entrance and dazzle everyone. Beautiful job, and thank you for keeping this piece of history alive and working!
Wow, Pearl's gonna be a museum piece youll feel bad about getting dirty-! LOL Beautiful example of craftsmanship and patience, what a sweet lathe pearls gonna be.
Congrats Keith, A LONG TIME COMING an a testament of your skill, machinist acumen and patience. Like so many Americans, who remember Pearl Harbor and the millions that made America great. Pearl - you couldn’t have picked a better name for your lathe.🇺🇸. Can’t wait for the test run video.
I've been watching Pearl's restoration now for some time and I just realized something. As the owner of an old Artisan Lathe. . . . . Watching you go through Pearl is an experience I’ll never forget. Now to find me a “Pearl” or one of like vintage to pull a part and rebuild it like yours. Well done Keith. the only thing missing is my Dad so we could watch together 👍❤️🙏
Keith, Pearl's looking so good, and it has been a long road to this point. Just a little more, and you can start using her, and I can hardly wait until then.
Hi Keith and Lisa 😊, nice job mate, she should run smooth as silk, and should be a keeper. Hope you and Lisa had a good Christmas, and best wishes for the new year. Stuart Uk.
Awesome job Keith Fenner. Very complicated gear box. I will say its good to see Monarch didn't use loose roller bearings that you have to hold in with grease like some manual Automotive transmissions. Fantastic restoration!!
Great job Kieth, I can tell the excitement in your voice and I don’t blame you pearl is going to be really sweet!! Happy for you! Can hardly wait to hear her run and make some chips!!!! Thanks for sharing!!
Awesome work Keith looking really good 👍❤❤. Take care of yourself and family and friends and be Blessed ❤️. Happy New Year to you and your Girlfriend ❤.
At the end. The Chuck Wrench never leaves your hand until you lay it down or put it in its keeper! I learned that one in HS metal shop back in the mid-seventies! I was standing behind another kid while he chucked up a part and he left the Chuck Wrench in the Chuck. Hit the "GO" button and that thing came around and slammed into the ways! It's a miracle his hand wasn't in the way! Shop teacher came over and let him have it!
Teachers today would be afraid for their jobs to let a student have it, but if they don’t, it will never be ingrained in their heads. Everyone loses with this way of teaching. I guess it really doesn’t matter anymore because they don’t even teach these classes now. As a gearhead, some of my favorite classes were auto mechanics and metal shop, such a loss for so many young people.
@@Hoaxer51 You are right! Also, while in HS I took the local Community College Automotive Technology course. My Junior and Senior years. Got elective credit for it AND it was free! I thought I wanted to be a Mechanic but went on to be a Mechanical Engineer instead!
Absolutely agree - chuck key never leaves the hand. Chuck keys left in a chuck have been known to fly and go through brick walls. A person in the way stands no chance. And it's not the nine thousand times you get it right - it's the once you get it wrong. You are just as dead.
Beautiful work as always! I was a bit worried about you handling the bearings and subconsciously rubbing your dirty finger on the raceway but I’m sure it will all be fine. Best wishes from a rainy UK 🇬🇧

Superb piece of machinery design, how you figured out reassembly sequence was stunning Keith, mind you when I watched disassembly I thought it wouldn't go back together without a fight. You must be cuffed with progress. Wishing you a very Happy New Year Keith. Surely that lock wire will now it's pinned to the mandrel, rotate whichever way the mandrel goes, or have I misunderstood, is that gear disengaged when in reverse, isn't it strange how it doesn't use a circlip. Once again thanks for taking us all along for the journey Keith.

6- 1941 means June 1941 + 3 months = means 9 -1941 - Sept. 1941. Pearl could be build at the same Day six months before Pearl Harbor or any other day in June.

I guess pre-oiling the Timken roller bearings and shaft to prevent a dry start before oil starts coming thru the lines was not necessary?

Oh, sorry, thought it was a South Bend....

Awesome discussion/mentoring….SIDE QUESTION…how is your shop heated now… as I remember the wood stove and your task of managing heat
Oil furnace
Just curious
Have you considered a 'run-in' through the gears followed by early oil-change to flush the gearbox?
“It’s a little tiny bit proud” i’m not familiar with that unit of measurement.😂
that's more than a c...t hair but less then a scoatch
When are you going to put in the shifter pieces for the front shifter?
I did right at the end. It just was not on camera.
Would the increased spindle speed affect the threading function at all? Or would that still be timed correctly?
Spindle speed and the gearing of lead and feed screws are two differently relationships, the gearing is timed with spindle rotation.
I guce you credit Keith. You are NOT giving the "old man grunts" when applying torque or strain against a component or even lifting a heavier object. Keeping age at bay.

Dec 7 1941 "a day that will live in Infamy" - 6-1941 is not 3 months before Pearl Harbor dude.......... LOL
6- 1941 means June 1941 + 3 months = means 9 -1941 - Sept. 1941. Pearl could be build at the same Day six months before Pearl Harbor or any other day in June.
Great, I figured I'd get somebody to do the math for me! LOL
