Behringer Blue Marvin vs "Regular" Behringer 2600

  • Looking at the new Behringer Blue Marvin, spring reverb, sound of the oscillators, and comparing it to the Behringer 2600 Black-and-Orange version with the digital reverb. Quick and rough, don't expect a lot.
    They are both connected with 5-pin MIDI to make sure USB does not contribute to noise. Sequence is provided by Deluge. Both start out with just a sawtooth from VCO 3.
    My current impression from the first half hour, so take that with a grain of salt: I can't detect much of a difference in the core sound, except a bit of a noise tail on the Marvin even without the reverb on, which I attribute to the amplifier circuit built around the reverb. Whatever the "specially selected components" are, I haven't found their influence yet. On the reverb itself, I'm kind of torn. I am one of the few peole who actually like the black-and-orange version's reverb. Not quite sure I'm too fond of the spring reverb's behavior. But I'm willing to give myself a couple more days.

    I also have the Blue Marvin. I have already sold the orange one. I like the Marvin a lot more. The spring reverb is very wide sounding and gives the 2600 the original sound. I personally feel, that my special Marvin sounds better than the orange 2600. It feels fatter. But maybe it is difficult to compare with such simple Saw Basses shown here. Just my 2 cents.

    I'm pretty sure the "selected components" applies for all Behringer 2600s. The _only_ difference between the regular and the Blue Marvin/Gray Meanie is the actual spring reverb. I even saw someone from Behringer comment somewhere and apologizing for the confusion since everyone was asking what the special components of the blue and gray versions were. I'm at least 95% sure that I didn't dream this.
    And to people hearing a difference between units, it might just come down to component tolerances. Behringer aren't building these units with the most expensive parts with the lowest tolerances mind you. Each unit will probably sound a bit different.

      I can't detect any difference in core sound between my two 2600s, with the exception of the tiny noise trails mentioned but barely audible in the video.

    Thanks for making this video! I have the black and orange purely due to the availability factor. I had preordered in late 2020 when it became available before the blue and grey variants were announced. I was in one of the first group of orders Sweetwater fulfilled in the US and I didn't want to wait longer for a blue or grey 2600. I'm not too worried about splitting hairs at this point as I love the synth and am glad I have the option to have a hardware option for the 2600 that is under $2k, which was not an option before. I also have a real spring reverb in my modular that I harvested from an old guitar amp and paired with a reverb tank driver module from G Storm Electro if I want real spring on my 2600. The tank I harvested sounds much better than the one in the 2600 models from Behringer anyway.

    Thank you! This is really interesting- do you have a preference for either model? Personally I think the spring reverb really makes it for me- especially as I have plenty of digital reverbs in my studio but no springs other than my guitar amp, so I find both the grey and blue models more interesting..

    This is a great comparison. One thing I e found though is that synths can sound similar on their own, but when in a mix certain characteristic stick out more. I’d love to hear the comparison in a mix.

      The stand is from Bax, an Innox IVA 39, unfortunately currently out of stock; but there are many rack stands to choose from. The Eurorack rails/power supply I use is a Behringer Eurorack Rack. Both together cost me ~110€.

    Just curious, I noticed the reverb has quite a high pitched ring around 3.5khz-5khz. This isn't an issue in many instances, however in more sparse pieces I find it to be a problem. Do you find this limiting at all? I don't use real physical spring reverbs all that often and am wondering if this sort of thing is part for the course. I just received mine and am liking it, but I am curious if this was an issue on the original or on Korg's reissue

    Hi Björn
    Thank you for this quick comparison. I also received my Blue Marvin this afternoon and immediately compared it with my Behringer 2600 in a very similar way (used a Keystep 37). And I have a huge difference between the two. Tuned both by ear and with a tuner and I can't get them identical. The Blue Marvin is clear and punchy and the black/orange one sounds a bit rounded and (in some situations) more muffled. At first I thought this is intentional because the Blue Marvin is often called punchier and more edgy. But the behavior of your two guys seems to be totally different. Perhaps it is like it is: analog oscillators don't sound the same from synth to synth.
    And if you tune all six VCOs together you become blown away by the tonal possibilities 😍🎶. And I just scratched the surface during the last two hours.
    Enjoy your machines👍

    • @therealbjoerngiesler
      @therealbjoerngiesler  3 роки тому +1

      Weird, I have found the opposite - my Black&Orange and Blue sound almost exactly the same, save for a bit of end-of-note noise on the Blue. Are you sure that you have the exact same settings? There's so much stuff going on on a 2600 that it's easy to miss some setting. I know I did, preparing for this video.

    • @danielthedentist
      @danielthedentist 3 роки тому +3

      @@therealbjoerngiesler Oh yes, I was thinking the same and even the tiniest movement of a slider may lead to a completely different sound. So I started all over again with a very simple constellation: just one VCO, simple filter setting, that's it. Then I tuned both Oszillator s with an electronic tuner to the exact same condition. The exact same tuning, but a different tone.
      Musically I don't complain because this little difference makes it actually very interesting, when you blend both together. They both have definitely their own characters.
      But from a more "scientific" standpoint (sorry, some deformation professionelle😁) such things can drive me crazy.
      For the reverb it is definitely a matter of tast. In general I agree withyou: I actually like the digital one very much. But in some tonal landscapes I was pretty surprised by the spring reverbs quality and the benefit it adds to the room character.
      Thinking of the patching possibilities of both together or in combination with the Doepfer system: endless possibilities🎶🙃
      All the best from Hannover

    It may not be impossible to route the spring reverberation into the preamp for gain to increase the signal to noise ratio of the transducer while making the reverb more prominent. The ambient noise of circuit function will be washed out like a fresh spring.

    Thanks for the interesting comparison. In my oppinion it's not a big thing in the different sound but more which one looks better^^. First I thought the regular one looks better for me, because it looks like an typically ARP with the orange and black color. But in your video, the blue one looks really great. It would be nice, if you can change between the digital reverb and the noisy real spring one directly on the unit, too bad thad Behringer didn't build booth reverbs in the synth, I think that would be the best way. Anyway, its a great synth especially for that price.

      I go for the BlackOrange. I don’t like spring reverbs anyway (except for organs). The gray and blue 2600s are just an attempt to make more money with an easier to manufacture instrument, like the Matriarch ’Black Edition‘.

    So the extra cash is for the Spring reverb unit.
    In the UK it costs just over £100.00 more.
    Tonaly I hear no difference in just raw filters and tone colour.
    Infact when you don't watch the video and just listen to it you can't tell which one is playing...and that kinda says it all.
    Glad I saved just over £100.00.getting the Balck and orange, I nearly wasted 100 quid more on the Grey Meanie.
    I put that extra cash towards a keystep pro instead.
