The Voltage Processor is probably the oddest module on this synth, and most difficult to get your head around. It's pretty unique and a little bit impenetrable... so this may help :) This is an excerpt from my Patreon tutorial series deep dive into the 2600.

It's 2021 and we are learning the ARP 2600 all over again. What was once being discarded as old and outdated is now new again. These units are selling big time, so it seems like the 2600 is ready for a new generation of synthesists. Crazy world we live in.
What I found interesting was that a vintage arp is £10k and I’d love one for the experience - the size of the thing! But I’m getting a similar experience and following the same workflow for a fraction of the price. Definitely showed me a vintage one isn’t worth the asking price. These are great, and I think I’m getting similar sounds (because of the workflow and architecture) even if they don’t sound exactly the same as an original - which it may 🤷♂️
@@StarskyCarr Yeah, 10K for an original is crazy money. But I love that I can play with a 2600 work alike today for $700 US. I mix it with a Neutron and Crave and I have a very useful Semi-modular modular system.The Behringer 2600 is fun and I am glad tio have it. I wonder if the AKS Synthi-A clone is going to do something similar for that synth as well. I hope so.
@@jppagetoo Behringer is preparing an EMS VCS3 (Putney) clone. I really can't wait to get one.
Jean-Michel Jarre still uses an original ARP 2600 (among may other vintage synths).
Francis Rimbert (part of his crew) uses an original ARP 2500.
And another member of the crew uses a monumental MOOG modular system.
Hopefully in the year 2600 man will still be flying the 2600 synthesizer flag and still making sonic discoveries 🙏🏾
SC's 2600 vids are the absolute best on UA-cam!! I'm soaking up all the lessons and loving it... I may actually be able to use my 2600 right out of the box as a result. Thanks for posting!!!

Nice video. It's great experimenting with this amazing instrument, and even better when you have some understanding of what you're doing. I've yet to try the original patch book for the ARP2600, but looks as if it would work too.

Try more patching cables.
Choice of waveform is by cable to vca or vcf.
Yes. Cables are switches in the 2600 hardware.

Yeah it’s a bit impenetrable.. and the Arturia one is used in the past isn’t the same as the hardware - a much simpler and more obvious CV mixer.
Great video, clears up a lot in little time. It's hard to imagine a better synth to cut one's teeth on, I'm loving mine so much I moved it next to the living room couch. Great way to distract from the endless streamings ; - )

The lag processor can send a response to the spring ring.
How can you stop still the spring?

FYI you normally don't want to hook multiple outputs to a mult like that because it's sending output into another output and it can damage some modules or synths. A mult isn't a mixer--it's for splitting one voltage and sending to multiple inputs.

Hidden feature of the 2600 -The Lag processor is also a 6db Low Pass Filter if you need it.

It’s a deep cut. I rarely use it for that but if you want to shave a little top off of a blend of waveforms it’s there.
Yeah as far as I recall it only goes to 1600 but not something I’ve ever used tbh. Still... would have been good to add :)

oh man that's great. I'm getting mine maybe tomorrow so I'm watching your vids. I have been trying to follow along with the Arturia ARP 2600 V3, and that section is a lot different. whhhaaaaa I want to try your patches but I'll have to wait for the real thing. great vids .
Yeah the Arturia is so different. I knew how that worked so had to figure this one out.. hence the video. I thought I might as well demo what I've just learned!

After watching your comparison of the Blue/Grey/2600, I finally succumbed to the 2600 - the only one with the correct colour scheme :-) I really wanted one of the originals back in the day. Love the tutorial. More please. It will save me from reading the manual :-)
Haha I like the blue, but my family prefers the black. Maybe I’ve already got too many black synths 😀. If you’re looking for more tutorials I’ve a deep dive into the ring mod and filter on UA-cam plus a complete walkthrough and separate tutorials on the envelopes and how to automate modulation using the ring mod as a vCA on my Patreon channel. I think I may have exhausted my knowledge now 😂
@@StarskyCarr Ha! Ha! All my synths are black or grey (the 2600 looks more brown than black) except for the UDO Super 6 where I opted for the blue. And very tasty and tasteful it is too. Oh, and my modular is mainly silver. Ok, there goes the 'all synths are black' theory :-)

Pretty sure the Blue was the original but only like 500 were made. I was wanting the black to match my Arp Solus for awhile but had to go blue once they announced it had real spring reverb.
I got the black Xmas tree first, then along came blue one to keep it company ☺️

Starsky, I need help on something: is it possible to invert the phase of an LFO using the VP? Or to have two LFO's that move at the same frequency but with a 180º phase offset?
Sorry only just read this. Yes. Put a sawtooth into the mult take one direct out to wherever… and send another via an inverter. I show this in the video using an oscillator as an LFO and cancel the phase to get zero modulation.
@@StarskyCarr Thank you! This actually worked. I'm still struggling to figure out a patch so I'll ask again: Is there a way you can use either the Ring Mod or an LFO to get a left to right panning trick? I'm trying to recreate Pete Townshend's patch in Who Are You, and I'm trying to get the panner effect.

I've noticed something on my recently acquired 2600 and wonder if you could verify?
If the Trig Mode switch on mine is set to MULT, the LFO will not move until you slide it up, where it starts modulating at around the same rate as incoming triggers from my Arturia Keystep 37 arp when via midi.
Vary the BPM on the Arturia and it seems to follow.
It does not do this when you are using the CV outs though.
So does this point to LFO being somewhat syncable to Midi Clock?
Haha - nice to hear I’m not talking to myself :) The LFO resets on midi NOTE ON when in mult mode. Maybe that’s what you’re noticing!
@@StarskyCarr That may be it! When the LFO rate is slower than that of the incoming Midi Note, it doesn't move - so some potential hacks! You are defo not talking to yourself. Keep on being excellent!
So - CV signal does not re-trigger LFO in MULT, but Midi does. I wish there'd been *some* midi info specs in the manual to clarify things!
Although I've played it via CV briefly ... just to see what happens - I never took any notice of the LFO, I was surprised by the MIDI note reset tbh.
@@StarskyCarr So I wasn't going nuts! There is a performance hack in there which is cool. My wife and family are getting a little frustrated at the weird noises filling the house - headphone nah! - but I am having so much fun.

I just went with the colour. Springs are noisier than the digital but there’s higher quality components (I couldn’t hear the difference they made).

you should touch on envelopes. This is the hardest thing for folks to get their head around on the 2600 because of the notion of the AR and ADSR and the pathway through the 2 which seem to be in series at first glance.
I’ve got a ‘special’ episode on the envelopes available via my Patreon page. I thought it was too technical for the channel.
What are the little black circles on the panel for?
They're little rubber plugs, behind which are trimming screws for calibration.
Does yours take around 30 minutes to warm up enough to be back in tune as set the previous day ?
I’ll have to test. I’ve been using it independently of other kit so it’s not been anything I’d notice.

@@PaulLawlerMusic that wouldn't bother me on a chilly morning tbh. I would expect there to be something like that between a cool morning following an evening in the studio where everything getting warm and toasty. Just analog drift.
@@StarskyCarr I'm not so sure, my original 2600 doesn't do it. Seems like something Behringher could have addressed without really compromising the sound.
@@PaulLawlerMusic I've not got one to compare it to so cannot comment from that perspective, which is why I wouldn't have noted it as odd. I'm constantly retuning the P5 lots more than this... but then again maybe mines not doing it.. as you suggested?
How can i invert the pitch of the oscillators Zawinul style?
Send the pitch Cv through an inverter. You can then control the amount of tracking as well. It’s on a video I uploaded… maybe UA-cam.. maybe on my Patreon I can’t remember.

Hehe. The words "Voltage" and "Processor" immediately made me think of Overclocking CPU:s. :). Another cool voltage/processor related concept.... Although you want minimal fluctuation in the output! :)

they're buffered (at least I'm sure they are) They work when sharing pitch CV.

No, that’s not the performance … I’m showing why it’s useful in a performance. This is called a tutorial or a demonstration. I’ve no idea if you’re a native English speaker or not - I’m presuming not. I Hope that clarifies how we use the language.
